In the Middle of the Minch / En medio del Minch

In the queasy dinghy he had rented from Shamus Yellowbee, wearing a blue T-shirt to do as the Romans do when in Rome and a pair of horrible, outdated sunglasses the bee had thrown in for free when they made their deal, Arley reached the point in the ocean supposed to be immediately above the door to the palace of the Blue Men of Minch.

He trapped a small lapis lazuli ball in a net of gold and hung it from a long gold chain, making a sort of angel caller. These are also apt for summoning demons if you raise a ruckus with them.  He lowered it gently into the ocean and with this jeweled pendulum  he began to knock on the door, hoping to catch the attention of the blue doorkeeper.

Three things did Arley know about the Blue Men. The first was that they were rowdy and ferocious and addicted to the sport of drowning folks during foul tempests. The second was that they always spared rhymers, for they felt the Earth needed more poets than it had and would not deprive it of any. And the third that they also loved riddles, and were grateful to learn new ones, the ruder the better.

Arley did not much like riddles. He valued clarity and simplicity and riddles made him nervous. But, though he did not consider himself a good poet, he had tried his hand at verse and loved poetry and thought it would be wise to let the blue men know that from the very first.

So while he swung the jewel that was his caller, he chanted:

"Oh, sapphire-eyed men who dwell in turquoise halls, I evoke you,

Leave thy blue coral groves to heed my calls, for I invoke you,

Oh, bearded men of cyan skin and indigo hair,

Rise up from your cerulean lair

Above the murmuring waves to parley

And exchange a word with the fairy prince Arley."

It was not long before Arley´s persistent, hypnotic knocks and chants were answered by one of the demons from the deep he sought to converse with.

Arley explained his business there in verse, and the blue man, who was in a good mood that day, proved to be quite helpful.

He said he knew very well who the rascal Tansy Mandrakecot was and all about the pencil. He sank back into the deep and returned with it in his hand.

Arley was thinking the Blue Men were nowhere near as fierce and wild as they were said to be, when the sea creature decided Arley must answer a riddle before he got to have the pencil. Arley’s hopes sank and he thought he would never win it.

Jock the Gorm / Juan, el Glauco

Since you say you have been to Salamanca, you must have learned some of the riddles that the students there enjoy. Let us see if you know the answer to this one: Students who study Latin and know more than one, how can I cover two holes with one?

And then Arley knew he’d had a stroke of luck. His habit of reading everything written that passed before his eyes saved the day and won the pencil, for he had read all the graffiti on the walls of the devil´s cave.

Arley

Stick your nose  up your arse, sir, and when you are done,
you´ll find you have covered two holes with one.

It was a pretty rude answer, but the sea demon was delighted with it.

Jock the Gorm / Juan el Glauco

I scrawled that riddle myself on the walls of the devil’s cave in Salamanca, where in my youth I studied to be a necromancer. Down here we are well aware that it is a question of thief´s honor never to return what one steals, unless one wishes to be taken for a fool, but there is nothing I wouldn´t do for another son of my alma mater. I mean you, of course, not that blackguard Mandrakecot. Who knows who that scamp stole the pencil from himself? Arley, frater, here is your pencil.

Some people call their aunts by their family name. So Rhody might be a last name, probably Scottish. But the auntie in this song might be called Rhoda, a once popular Greek name that means rose.

Martin Goes to The Hebrides / Martin se va a las Hébridas

Michael

It looks like we are going to be stuck on the wrong side of a door to hell for at least a month. So since we're grounded in a school, infernal to boot, and despite this being August, we´ve decided to get on with our work and learn more English. Moll Avery has let us have a computer and we´ve done some research on the area Arley is visiting. We´ve  prepared a short text about it for you to read with some questions to answer.

We found the fantastic photos that illustrate the text in Images from the Internet
.

Martin Goes to the Hebrides / Martín se va a las Hébridas.

I – Read the text:

Martin's hobbies are walking, gardening and bird watching, so it isn't surprising that he decided to go on holiday to the Hebrides. He has been having a great time this summer touring this area. He arrived in time to see the machair flowers in bloom. These are many different kinds of wild flowers, including orchids, that blossom splendidly thanks to seaweed and shellfish that have been ground down, washed ashore and blown inland. This mixture, called machair, makes the land very fertile, and thanks to it, fields in the Hebrides are splendid to behold for a few weeks in summer.

Martin got to see a lot of birds too. Razorbills, shags, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes  are only a few feathered friends he has seen. New to him were the bonxies, great skuas that are the winged pirates of the seas. They frighten and harass other birds to steal their food and even make a meal of smaller birds. And they are not at all daunted by humans.

Before he leaves for home, he wants to spend three days in one of the Shiant Islands, which are in the heart of the Minch, a strait in north - west Scotland.  He will take a dinghy to get there. The ride will cost him about five hundred pounds, but he thinks it will be money very well spent because he expects to see wonders when he gets there. He hopes he won´t have any trouble with the basking sharks or the Blue Men of the Minch on his way there.

Martin hopes he won´t have any trouble with the basking sharks or the Blue Men of the Minch on his way there. The first are the second biggest fish in the world and used to be fished for liver oil but are now a protected species. As for the second, they are legendary creatures that haunt the deep and come out during storms to recruit new members for their tribe. Martin is fond of the sea, but would rather not be drowned in a tempest, so he is quite happy that the weather forecast says it will be fine all three days of his stay at the island he is visiting.

When he gets to the island, a shepherd, who is the only person who lives on it, will give him a key to a stone cottage where he will sleep during his stay. He won´t have to pay for the use of this house, which is more of a shelter than a home. It doesn´t have a toilet or running water and there is no electricity on the island.

However, he can get drinking water from a well a little ways from the house. He will have to bring food for three days with him, but must be very careful where and how he keeps it because there are black rats on the island that eat up anything they find. He has been told not to bury or burn his garbage, but to bring it back with him when he leaves the island.

Why would he want to stay at a place like this? Because his favorite bird is the Atlantic puffin and there is a colony of these birds on the island. They won´t be there for long. In a few days it will be mid-August and they will be leaving for the Bay of Biscay.

No van a permanecer allí mucho tiempo.

Preconditions / Cuestiones previas

Inside the Cave of Salamanca, Tanacetum Mandrakecot began to state what he would have in exchange for the magic pencil Arley and Alpin were after. As he spoke, a small but unquiet shadow that belonged to none of those present made its shy but sly appearance and slipped from one side to the other of the cave.

Tansy / Tanaceto

So that I will give you my pencil, you must first bring me one like it that was stolen from me by the Blue Men of Minch.

 Alpin

I don´t understand. You say that you will give me your pencil if Arley brings you another one that is in the power of the Blue Men of Minch. But what sense does that make? If Arley gets hold of that pencil, I will want to keep it too.

No entiendo.

Why would Arley go all the way to Scotland to confront a gang of sea monsters - don´t think we are so ignorant we ignore who those guys are and how they go about their business – to bring here a pencil and confront you, who are not just any milksop either and might break your word and try to keep both pencils? Either you are a fool or your intentions are quite questionable.

Tansy / Tanaceto

I already said I wasn´t a bigger fool than anyone else here. Granted I am rather lazy. But what is really happening here is that I am no occultist, nor do I wish to be. I´m an artist. I came here because I had heard that this was originally an art school founded by Hercules.

Alpin
Hercules? Mr. Muscles Between the Ears? What can someone with muscle dysmorphia know about Art? Maybe he posed for some sculptor, but that is probably it.

Tansy / Tanaceto

To learn what Hercules knew about Art, I came all the way here. They told me he had left a talking statue in this cave that gave art classes to anyone who cared to listen. I came to see if there was anything worth hearing.

 Arley

And what have you learned?

¿Y qué has averiguado?

 Tansy / Tanaceto

I´m not saying another word until I get my other pencil.

Don Quijote

Let´s go for it right now, then. It doesn´t make any sense to remain here a minute longer.

Vayamos a buscarlo cuanto antes. Permanecer aquí más tiempo es un sinsentido.

 Touchy  / El Rabietas

Nobody is leaving this place.

De aquí no sale nadie.

 Tansy / Tanaceto

Oh, yes, indeed. That kid is leaving because he will return. I´m a good judge of character and that kid won´t leave his friends trapped in here. They will be my hostages. Besides, what does all this have to do with you? So long as I stay. I’m the one that’s in your class. You have about a month, whatever your name is, kid. You need to be back before September Eve if you want this to work out.

Abundant Cestodes / Abudante Cestodes

Listen, when you return, bring with you a couple of cakes like the one the green birthday guy over there brought with him. That was authentic scrumptious cake. Better yet, bring the baker.

Alpin

Hey! I want some too!

¡Eh! ¡Qué yo también quiero!

Don Quijote

Arley isn´t going anywhere alone! I don´t care if he´s more than seven. The child mustn´t go face sea monsters on his own!

¡Arley no va a ir a ninguna parte solo!

Tansy / Tanaceto

Don´t discourage him, man. You’re mining his self-esteem. Come on, kid, holidays at the beach. Go.

No le coma la moral, hombre. Ale, niño, vacaciones en la playa. Ve.

Standing by the door and with her back to it was the demoness Moll Avery, only being authorized to open the door from the inside. Behind her, the shadow was doing its best to take the shape of the door, that no one might notice it was there.

Either someone walks out this door or there will be no dinner. I can´t be in two places at the same time.

 Ophidian Evergreen / Ofidio Siempreverde

Why do you think he will return?

¿Por qué crees que éste volverá?

Tansy / Tanaceto

He’s the only one here who didn´t fight for a piece of cake.

As soon as the demoness opened the door, Arley flew off like a bat out of hell. He was so quick that the poor shadow was blown to a side and remained trapped in the cave.

In a question of no time, Arley was in a field in the Hebrides among machair flowers, trying to persuade a giant yellow bumblebee to rent him a dinghy, so he could row to the Shiant Islands, which are in the heart of the Minch.

Arley promised not to frighten the ewes or their lambs, not to mess with the birds even if they were obnoxious bonxies, to refrain from provoking the basking sharks and from feeding the black rats. He wasn´t going to leave any food or garbage about because he meant to take none with him, so that would be easy to do. Also easy would be not to cause a conmotion falling off the basalt cliffs, because, of course, he had wings and could fly. Last but not least, he had to promise not to raise a storn, and he explained that he was not a weather spirit and didn´t have much of an idea how that was done anyway.

Shamus Yellowbee - that was the giant bee's name - told him that aside from paying rent, he would have to leave a deposit in case the Blue Men decided to drown him and sink the dinghy and he would therefore obviously be unable to return it.

To all this and a bit more Arley agreed without arguing. So he got his dinghy.
