The garden of the Hesperides is an orchard that Hera, the queen of the gods, has in the west of the Mediterranean Sea, close to Cádiz, which is where the ancient Greeks believed the sun set every evening. In this garden there is a tree that grows golden apples and that was the wedding gift Gea, the goddess of the Earth, gave Hera when she agreed to marry Zeus, the king of the gods.

El jardín de las Hespérides es un huerto que tiene Hera, la reina de los dioses, en el oeste del Mar Mediterráneo, cerca de Cádiz, que es donde los griegos pensaban que se ponía el sol. En este jardín se encuentra un árbol que da manzanas de oro, y que fue el regalo de bodas que Gea, la diosa de la tierra, le hizo a Hera cuando esta aceptó casarse con Zeus, el rey de los dioses.



Three maidens watch over this orchard. They are known as the Hesperides because their maternal grandfather is Hesperus, the evening star. Their father is the enormous Atlas, who is big even for a giant, and whose job is to hold the sky up on his shoulders so that it won´t fall on the earth. The dragon Ladon, who never sleeps, helps the Hesperides guard the apples, since many have tried to steal them. They say this dragon has a hundred heads but the person who does our illustrations flatly refused to draw more than one.

Tres doncellas cuidan de este huerto. Son conocidas como las Hespérides, porque su abuelo materno es Héspero, el lucero vespertino. Su padre es el enorme Atlas, grande hasta para ser un gigante, cuya labor consiste en sujetar el cielo sobre sus hombros para que no caiga sobre la tierra. El dragón Ladón, que nunca duerme, ayuda a las Hespérides a cuidar de las manzanas, ya que muchos han intentado robarlas. Dicen de este dragón que tiene cien cabezas, pero la persona que hace nuestras ilustraciones  se negó en redondo a pintar más de una.

The Hesperides love weddings, and when invited always show up just before the bridal night begins, when the sun is about to set, to wish the bride and groom good luck. If you wish to call each by her name, you may call them Hesperia (Evening), Erytheia (the Redhead) and Asterope (the Starry-Faced). And aside from being good at gardening, the Hesperides are famous for their beautiful singing.

A las Hespérides les encantan las bodas y si son invitadas siempre aparecen justo antes del comienzo de la noche de bodas, cuando se está poniendo el sol, para desear buena suerte a los novios. Si deseas llamar a cada una por su nombre puedes llamarlas Hesperia (Anochecer), Erytheia (la Pelirroja) y Asterope (Cara de estrella). Y además de ser estupendas jardineras, las Hespérides tienen fama de cantar muy bien.
