It's over. Here I am at the beach saying goodbye to the ocean and the summer before returning to my villa in Oretania. It's quite sad, except, of course, that as a ghost, I know I will be able to return next summer, since hardly anything ever happens to us and drives us off track. It is rather like being a retiree. Another advantage of being a ghost is that I can listen to the songs the sirens sing without turning into fertilizer for plants. Yes, those plump little birdlike creatures in the image below are the sirens. You can't hear them, but they are singing goodbye to me with all their heart, and I will tell you their story before I return home.

Se acabó. Aquí estoy en la playa diciendo adiós al mar y al verano antes de volver a mi villa en Oretania. Es bastante triste, excepto, por supuesto, que al ser un fantasma, sé que podré volver el año que viene, puesto que casí nada nos suele ocurrir que nos desvíe de nuestro camino. Es más o menos como ser un jubilado. Otra ventaja de ser fantasma es que puedo escuchar las canciones que cantan las sirenas sin convertirme en abono para plantas. Sí, esos pajaritos rollizos de la imagen de abajo son las sirenas. Tú no puedes oirlas, pero me están cantando adiós con el corazón y yo os contaré su historia antes de irme para casa.

Now some say the sirens are two and others say they are five, but I am a personal friend of eight. And that's what I told the illustrator when I described the sirens to her so she could draw them. Eight, and something like the Ronettes, I said.

Bien, pues algunos dicen que las sirenas son dos y otros insisten en que son cinco, pero yo soy amigo personal de ocho y eso es lo que le dije a la ilustradora cuando describí a estas criaturas para que las pudiese dibujar. Ocho, y parecidas a las Ronettes, le dije.  

I bet you thought a siren looked like a mermaid, with long wet hair and the shimmering tail of a fish. Well, no. Not exactly. The sirens were originally friends and companions of the maiden Persephone. They tried to help her mother, Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, find her when she was kidnapped by Hades, the god of the underworld. So they could participate more effectively in the search for Persephone, Demeter changed them into birds.

Apuesto a que pensabas que una sirena era como una mujer con el pelo mojado y la brillante cola de un pez. Pues no. No exáctamente. Las sirenas eran originalmente amigas y compañeras de la doncella Perséfone. Intentaron ayudar a su madre, Deméter, la diosa de la agricultura, a encontrar a Perséfone cuando la raptó el dios del inframundo, Hades. Para que pudiesen participar más efectivamente en la busqueda, Deméter las convirtió en pájaros.

Somehow, they ended up living in an island called Anthemusa.  It had flowery meadows, but was surrounded by rocks and cliffs. The sirens were wonderful singers, and they had the gift of knowing all about the past and the future. They were, however, pretty dangerous, because they were so fascinating that once people started listening to them, they wanted to go on listening forever. Perhaps that is why they moved to the island, so as not to cause as much trouble as they might if they moved about freely.

Por algún motivo acabaron viviendo en una isla llamada Antemusa. La isla tenía praderas llenas de flores pero  estaba rodeada de rocas y acantilados. Las sirenas eran magníficas cantantes y tenían el don de conocer a fondo el pasado y el futuro. Pero resultaban ser harto peligrosas porque eran tan fascinantes que cuando alguien empezaba a escucharlas ya no podía dejar de hacerlo.Tal vez por eso se mudaron a la isla, para no causar tantos estragos como podrían provocar de volar libremente por todas partes.

Most of their victims were sailors who happened to sail by Antemusa. When these men heard them sing, they would leap off their ships and try desperately to swim to shore and reach the sirens. Many drowned and others were smashed against the rocks. Those that made it alive to the island would just sit there doing nothing but listen to the sirens until they died of starvation. This was all a bit revolting, because it seems their bodies remained where they had fallen, turning into fertilizer for the flowery meadows.    

La mayoría de sus víctimas eran marineros que pasaban navegando por Antemusa. Cuando estos hombres escuchaban su canto, saltaban de sus naves e intentaban desesperadamente llegar a tierra y alcanzar a las sirenas. Muchos se ahogaban y otros perecían al estamparse contra las rocas. Los que lograban llegar a la isla se quedaban ahí sentados sin hacer otra cosa que escuchar a las sirenas hasta morir de inanición. Todo esto era bastante desagradable porque parece ser que sus cuerpos quedaban ahí  donde cayeron, sirviendo de fertilizante para las flores de las praderas.

Odysseus / Odiseo

I alone can boast of having lived after listening to the songs of the sirens. I had the men in my crew stopper their ears with wax when we sailed by Anthemusa. And I had myself bound to the mast of my ship so I could not leap from it into the ocean. I almost went mad pleading to be released so I could chase after the sirens, but my men rowed past the sirens' territory and I lived to tell the tale.

Sólo yo puedo presumir de haber sobrevivido tras escuchar cantar a las sirenas. Hice que los hombres de mi tripulación se taponasen los oídos con cera al navegar junto a Antemusa. Y ordené que me atasen al mástil de mi nave para que no pudiese lanzarme al mar. Casi me vuelvo loco suplicando que me soltasen para poder perseguir a las sirenas, pero cuando mis hombres salieron remando de su territorio, pude contarlo.
