The Grand Old Duke of York / El grandísimo duque de York



Here is a nursery rhyme, which like most traditional children's songs has an origen and a meaning that escapes even most adults. This little song about the Duke of York is about useless effort and  also about the futility of war.

He aquí un "nursery rhyme," una canción infantil tradicional que como muchas tiene un origen y un significado que no todos los adultos llegan a conocer o entender. La cancioncilla del duque de York es sobre el esfuerzo inutil, y también sobre la futilidad de la guerra.

The grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men.
And he marched them up to the top of a hill,
And he marched them down again.
And when they were up,
They were up.
And when they were down,
They were down.
And when they were only halfway up,
They were neither up nor down.

El grandísimo duque de York,
Diez mil hombres tenía,
Y les hacía subir una colina,
 y luego bajarla les hacía,
Y cuando estaban arriba,
Arriba estaban.
Y cuando estaban abajo,
Abajo estaban.
Y cuando por la mitad marchaban,
Ni arriba ni abajo estaban.

Who was the grand old Duke of York? He could be anyone who has led a losing army and/or was Duke of York, but the most likely candidate among many is the gentleman whose picture you can see below:

¿Quién era el grandísimo duque de York? Podría ser cualquiera que haya liderado un ejercito de perdedores y/o haya sido duque de York, pero de los muchos candidatos, el más probable es este señor cuya foto vemos abajo.

As commander during the Flanders campaign of 1793-94, I lost lots of men and was heavily defeated at the battle of Tourcoing. I did better later as a desk general, but all the glory went to the Duke of Wellington.

Como comandante durante la campaña de Flandes de 1793-94, perdí muchísimos hombres y sufrí una gran derrota en la batalla de Tourcoing. Lo hice mejor más tarde dando órdenes desde un despacho, pero toda la gloria  fue para el Duque de Wellington.
