We decided to do a listening in situ and we went to a hamburger place in a town called Wee Elmira to see what we could hear in English there.

Decidimos hacer un listening in situ y nos fuimos a una hamburguesería en un pueblo llamado Enanita Elmira a ver lo que se escuchaba en inglés ahí.

I – TIMMY AND HIS MOM SANDRA ARRIVE AT BURGER PATAY-GUTOM.

TIMMY Y SU MADRE SANDRA LLEGAN A LA HAMBURGUESERÍA PATAY-GUTOM.

Sandra: Ok, Timmy, here we are at Burger Patay-Gutom. Now where is your friend the birthday boy?

Bueno, Timmy, ya estamos en Burger Patay-Gutom. ¿Dónde está tu amigo el del cumpleñaos?

Timmy: I can’t see him, Mom. There are too many people here. And an awful lot of kids.

No le puedo ver, Mamá. Hay demasiada gente aquí. Y mogollón de críos.

Sandra: That’s right. There must be at least half a dozen birthday parties going on here this afternoon. Let’s ask one of the attendants. What’s your friend’s name?

Cierto. Debe de haber al menos media docena de fiestas de cumpleaños aquí esta tarde. Vamos a preguntar a uno de los empleados. ¿Cómo se llama tu amigo?

Timmy: His name is Ricky.

Se llama Ricky.

Sandra: And his last name is?

¿Y su apellido es…?

Timmy: Miles. His name is Ricky Miles.

Miles. Su nombre es Ricky Miles.

Sandra: Hello, miss. Is there a little boy having a party here whose name is Ricky Miles?

Hola, señorita. ¿Hay un niño celebrando aquí su cumpleaños que se llama Ricky Miles?

Rita: There sure is. He’s in the playground outside. That’s his mother sitting at their table by the door on the left. The lady in blue.

Desde luego que sí. Está fuera en el parque de juegos. Esa es su madre, la que está sentada en su mesa junto a la puerta de la izquierda. La señora de azul.

Timmy: I’m going outside to find Ricky.

Voy a salir a buscar a Ricky.

Sandra: Wait. I want us to say hi to his mom first so she’ll know you are here and I want her to see that you’ve brought a gift for Ricky. He might lose it or forget it out there if you give it to him while he’s playing and she’ll think you are a rude kid who doesn’t bother to bring a birthday gift.

Espera. Quiero que saludes a su madre primero para que sepa que estás aquí y quiero que vea que le has traido un regalo a Ricky. Puede que él lo pierda o se lo deje olvidado ahí fuera si se lo das mientras está jugando y entonces ella pensará que eres un niño maleducado que no se molesta en traer un regalo.

II – TIMMY SEES HIS FRIEND EMILY WHO IS THERE WITH HER SISTER SAMANTHA AND THEIR MOM LINDA.

TIMMY SE ENCUENTRA CON SU AMIGA EMILIA QUE ESTÁ AHÍ CON SU HERMANA SAMANTHA Y SU MADRE LINDA.

Timmy: Hi, Emily. Are you here because of Ricky’s party too?

Hola, Emily. ¿Estás aquí por el cumpleaños de Ricky?

Emily: No, I’m not invited to Ricky’s party. My mom brought me and my sister here because she doesn’t feel like cooking dinner today.

No, no estoy invitada a la fiesta de Ricky. Mi mamá nos ha traído a mi hermana y a mí porque no tiene ganas de cocinar la cena hoy.

Linda: Emily, do you want a Smiling Through Lunch Box?

Emily, ¿quieres una Fiambrera Apañada?

Emily: What’s the toy?

¿Cuál es el juguete?

Linda: I have no idea. What’s the toy in the Smiling Through Lunch Box, sir?

No tengo ni idea. ¿Cuál es el juguete que viene con la Fiambrera Apañada, señor?

Jake: For a girl or for a boy? It’s a collectible car for a boy and a little blue pony with wings for a girl. No, I got that wrong. The little blue pony was yesterday’s toy. Today it’s a purple unicorn.

¿Para niña o nino? Es un cochecito coleccionable para niño y un pony azul con alas para niña. No, me he equivocado. El pony azul era el juguete de ayer. Hoy es un unicornio morado.

Linda: You heard the man, Emily. Do you want that toy or not?

Ya has oído al señor, Emily. ¿Quieres ese juguete o no?

Samantha: I want the unicorn, Mom!

¡Yo sí quiero el unicornio, Mamá!

Linda: Two unicorns – that is, two SmilingThrough Lunch Boxes.

Dos unicornios, es decir, dos Fiambreras Apañadas.

Samantha: One with a cheeseburger and apple fries and coke. I want a small ice cream sundae with chocolate sauce too.

Una con una hamburguesa con queso y patatas fritas de manzana y una coca. También quiero un helado pequeño con salsa de chocolate.

Emily: I want mine with onion rings, chicken nuggets and cherry pop. And I want a strawberry sundae, regular size.

Yo quiero la mía con aros de cebolla, trocitos de pollo frito y un refresco de cereza. Y también quiero un helado, pero con salsa de fresa, de tamaño mediano.

Jake: Do you want the sundaes now or will you come for them when you’re done with the rest of the food?

Los helados os los pongo ahora o venís a por ellos cuando hayáis acabado con el resto de la comida?

Samantha: Now. I like mine a little melted.

Ahora. Me gusta el mio algo derretido.

Linda: Can I get you something, Timmy?

¿Tú quieres algo, Timmy?

Timmy: No, thank you, Mrs. Bates. I’m with my mom and a guest at Ricky’s party.

No gracias, Sra. Bates. Estoy con mi madre y estoy invitado a la fiesta de Ricky.

Linda: Oh, I see. Well, I want a large glass of ice tea with lots of ice. And can we have some extra ketchup?

Oh, entiendo. Bueno, yo quiero un vaso grande de té frío con un montón de hielo. ¿Y nos puede dar cátsup extra?

Jake: Sure, ma’am. Will four more ketchup bags do? I’ll give you the paper glasses for the drinks and there´s a soda fountain over there where you can fill them up and serve yourself as much ice as you please. You can also refill the glasses as many times as you like.

Claro, señora. ¿Vale con cuatro bolsitas más de cátsup? Le daré los vasos de papel para las bebidas y hay una fuente de refrescos ahí mismo donde puede llenarlos y servirse tanto hielo como quiera. También puede volver a rellenar los vasos tantas veces como le apetezca.

Linda: Oh, great. I’m really thirsty. How much is all this?

Ah, estupendo. Estoy realmente sedienta. ¿Cuanto es todo esto?

Jake: Only ten dollars and a nickel, ma’am.

Sólo diez dólares y cinco céntimos, señora.

Linda: Here’s twenty bucks.

Ahí van veinte pavos.

Jake: Have you got the nickel so I don’t have to give you a lot of small change?

¿Tiene los cinco céntimos para que no tenga que darle un montón de calderilla?

Samantha: I have a nickel, Mom. But I’m only lending it to you. I want it back later.

Yo tengo una moneda de cinco céntimos, Mamá. Pero sólo es un préstamo. La quiero de vuelta luego.

Linda: Oh, ok.

Ah, vale.

Jake: Here’s your change, ma’am. A brand new ten dollar bill.

Aquí tiene su cambio, señora. Un billete nuevo de diez dólares.

Linda: Thank you. One last thing. Can I buy one of those purple unicorns without having to buy a Smiling Through Lunch Box? I’m a bit ashamed to say this, but I want one for myself. My mother never bought me things like that when I was little.

Gracias. Una última cosa. ¿Puedo comprar uno de esos unicornios morados sin tener que comprar la Fiambrera Apañada? Me da un poco de vergüenza decir esto, pero quiero uno para mí. Mi madre nunca me compraba cosas como esa cuando era pequeña.

Jake: Listen, lady, if you promise not to breathe a word, I’ll give you one for free. But if anybody finds out about this I’ll get sacked and I´m letting you know I will remember your face.

Mire, señora, si me jura que no se lo va a decir a nadie, le daré uno gratis. Pero si alguien se entera de esto me despedirán y le advierto que me he quedado con su cara.

Linda: Thanks. This will be our little secret.

Gracias. Este será nuestro pequeño secreto.

III – RICKY ASKS HIS MOM, BETH, IF EMILY CAN JOIN HIS PARTY; HIS SISTER VIOLET IS WORRIED ABOUT THE FREE WATER THE KIDS ARE DRINKING.

RICKY LE PREGUNTA A SU MADRE, BETH, SI EMILY PUEDE UNIRSE A SU FIESTA; SU HERMANA VIOLETA ESTÁ PREOCUPADA POR EL AGUA GRATIS QUE LOS NIÑOS ESTÁN BEBIENDO.

Ricky: Mom, there’s a girl in my class here I forgot to invite to my party. Can she join us? Her mom’s already bought food for her anyway.

Mamá, hay una niña de mi clase aquí que me olvidé de invitar a mi fiesta. ¿Puede juntarse con nosotros? Su madre ya le ha comprado comida de todas formas.

Beth: Of course she can. At least offer her a drink and make sure she gets a piece of cake.

Claro que puede. Por lo menos ofrécela una bebida y asegúrate de que le den un pedazo de la tarta.

Ricky: Her little sister is here too. Can I give that kid some cake?

Su hermana está aquí también. ¿Puedo darle a esa niña tarta?

Beth: Yes, of course.

Sí, claro.

Violet: Mom, we asked the waiter for water and he filled a giant paper glass with some from the faucet and put four straws in it so we could share. Is that safe? I think it’s dirty.

Mamá, hemos pedido al camarero agua y ha llenado un vaso gigante de papel con agua del grifo y ha puesto cuatro pajas en él para que lo compartamos. ¿Es seguro? Yo creo que es una porquería.

Beth:

I think it’s cleaner if you tell the kids to go to the bathroom and drink from the faucet and stop pestering the waiter every two minutes, but I’m sure you are all sharing all kinds of germs anyway.

Creo que es más higiénico si les dices a los niños que vayan al baño y beban del grifo y dejen de dar la lata al camarero cada dos minutos, pero seguro que todos estáis compartiendo microbios de todas formas.

Violet:

Jill and Jeff and two other kids went to the toilet to drink and a lady kicked them out. She doesn’t work here. She was just a mean customer who doesn’t like kids and said we were cluttering the toilet up.

Jill y Jeff y otros dos niños fueron al baño para beber y una señora les echó con muy malos modos. No trabaja aquí. Sólo era una clienta antipática a la que no le gustan los niños que dijo que estábamos abarrotando el baño.

Beth:

Oh, lord! When will this be over?

¡Ay, Señor! ¿Cuándo acabará esto?

Violet:

Mom! Remember it’s my birthday next week, Mom. And I want to celebrate it here too.

¡Mamá! Recuerda que es mi cumple la semana que viene, Mamá. Y quiero celebrarlo aquí también.

IV – BUD, JED AND KIRSTY ONLY HAVE ELEVEN DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS BETWEEN THEM AND ALL THEY'VE HAD FOR BRUNCH IS A BEER AND A DOUGHNUT.

BUD, JED Y KIRSTY SÓLO TIENEN ONCE DÓLARES Y CINCUENTA CÉNTIMOS ENTRE LOS TRES Y  LO ÚNICO QUE HAN TOMADO AL MEDIODÍA ES UNA CERVEZA Y UN DONUT.

Kirsty: Both of you can buy a menu and if one of you asks for fries and the other for the mini salad as side dishes, I can eat that. I’m on a diet anyway.

Los dos podéis comprar un menú, y si uno pide patatas y el otro la mini ensalada de entrante, yo puedo comer eso. De todas formas estoy a dieta.

Bud: The only menus we can buy are the regular sze menus and I always have an extra large menu plus a box of twelve nuggets. And I don’t want to give you my fries. It’s bad enough I´m going to get a small pack and not an XL one.

Los únicos menús que podemos comprar son los medianos y yo siempre me tomo el extra grande más una cajita con doce trocitos de pollo frito. Y no quiero darle a nadie mis patatas. Ya basta con que vaya a ser el cucurucho pequeño y no una caja XL.

Jed: I can’t eat this stuff. It’s against my principles. I’m a vegetarian and I don’t approve of places like these for other reasons either.

Yo no puedo comer esto. Va en contra de mis principios. Para empezar soy vegetariano y además tengo otros motivos para estar en contra de lugares como este.

Kirsty: You can ask for a salad. There’s a salad without chicken.

Puedes pedir una ensalada. Hay una ensalada que no lleva pollo.

Jed: If I ask for a salad, what will you eat? If I buy a salad they won’t give me a small salad on the side.

Si pido una ensalada, ¿qué vas a comer tú? Si compro una ensalada, no nos darán otra pequeña de entrante.

Bud: Then we’ll ask for two hamburger menus and she gets to eat the hamburger and you get her side salad and should I suddenly feel generous you get my fries.

Entonces pediremos dos menús con hamburguesas y ella se comerá una de las hamburguesas y tú te comerás la ensaladita de entrante y si de pronto me siento generoso, te llevarás mis patatas.

Jed: Are you kidding? Even an anorexic wouldn’t be satisfied with that. And what would I drink? You get one drink with each menu.

¿Estás de guasa? Ni un anoréxico estaría satisfecho con eso. ¿Y qué bebería? Te dan una sola bebida con cada menú.

Kirsty: No! That’s the beauty of the thing. In this place you buy a paper glass and there’s a fountain where you get to refill it as many times as you want to.

¡No! Eso es lo genial de este plan. En este lugar compras un vaso de papel y hay una fuente donde lo puedes llenar y volver a llenar tantas veces como quieras.

Jed: I would have to wait until you guys are done drinking?

¿Tendría que esperar a que vosotros acabaseis de beber?

Kirsty: No! You take a sip and I take another and we can spend the whole day doing that. Well, at least until the paper glass gets soggy and the liquid starts to seep out.

¡No! Tú tomas un sorbo y yo otro y podemos pasarnos el día entero haciendo eso. Bueno, por lo menos hasta que el vaso de papel se ablande y el líquido empiece a salir por debajo.

Bud: How about if we buy nine ice cream sundaes? They only cost a dollar. We could have three each, which would make us feel kind of stuffed and even a little grossed out from eating too much of the same thing and we'd still have two dollars left for a paper glass for us three to share.

¿Y si compramos nueve helados? Sólo cuestan un dólar cada uno. Podríamos tomarnos tres cada uno, lo que nos dejaría empachados y algo mareados  por tomar demasiado de una misma cosa y todavía tendríamos dos dólares para un vaso de papel a compartir entre los tres.

Jed: I’m lactose intolerant.

Soy intolerante a la lactosa.

Bud: Darn!

Kirsty: Maybe it’s not real milk they make them with. They might not hurt you at all, Jed.

Tal vez no sea leche de verdad lo que usan para hacer los helados. Puede que no te hagan nada de daño, Jed.

The Woman Who Invited a Wart to Tea / La mujer que invitó a una verruga a tomar el té

We're happy to say that we are not entirely back from our holidays but we are briefly here to show you a story we have written in case you feel like reading. It  is based on an anecdote about something that happened to one of my grandmother's mortal friends who hosted magazine page tea parties.

Casi hemos vuelto de nuestras vacaciones, pero nos alegra mucho decir que todavía no del todo. Sólo estamos aquí brevemente para presentaros un cuento que hemos escrito por si os apetece leer un poco.  Está basado en una anécdota sobre algo que le ocurrió a una amiga mortal de mi abuela que preparaba unos tés de página de revista.

 The Woman Who Invited a Wart to Tea

La mujer que invitó a una verruga a tomar el té

Mrs. Milton was mother to two notoriously impertinent little girls, children who were infamous for asking all manner of indiscreet questions.

La Señora Milton era la madre de dos niñitas notoriamente impertinentes, criaturas infames por su manía de hacer toda clase de preguntas indiscretas.

Mrs. Milton was very worried because she had invited the wife of her husband’s new boss to tea. Mrs. Milton had only seen Mrs. Vereker once before, but she couldn’t help noticing – nobody could have – that Mrs. Vereker, who was a handsome woman in every other respect, had a big, fat, purple wart on the tip of her aquiline nose. Mrs. Milton feared what her daughters might want to learn about it.

La Señora Milton estaba muy preocupada porque había invitado a la esposa del nuevo jefe de su marido a tomar el té. Sólo la había visto en una ocasión, pero no pudo evitar fijarse, porque nadie lo podría haber evitado, en que la Señora Vereker, que por lo demás era una mujer de muy buen ver, tenía una enorme verruga morada justo en la punta de su aquilina nariz. La Señora Milton temía lo que sus hijas podrían querer averiguar sobre la verruga.

Initially, Mrs. Milton had made plans to have her daughters stay at her sister’s house that afternoon, but her sister had phoned at the last moment saying that she had no choice but to visit a friend who'd suffered an accident and was in hospital.

Inicialmente la Señora Milton había hecho planes para que sus hijas se quedasen esa tarde en casa de su hermana, pero su hermana había telefoneado en el último minuto diciendo que no tenía otra alternativa que visitar a una amiga que había sufrido un accidente y había tenido que ser hospitalizada.

Mrs. Milton summoned her little girls and had a serious talk with them. They were to have tea with her and Mrs.Vereker, but if either of the girls made the slightest mention of the blemish on Mrs. Vereker’s nose they would both be cruelly punished. Should, however, they manage to be seen but not heard, they would be very generously rewarded.

La Señora Milton convocó a las niñas a una reunión en la que habló seriamente con ellas. Iban a tomar el té con ella y con la Señora Vereker, pero si cualquiera de las dos hacía la más mínima mención del defecto que tenía la Señora Vereker en la nariz, ambas serían cruelmente castigadas. Pero en el caso de que lograsen ser vistas y no oídas, serían premiadas pero que muy generosamente.

The little girls were willing to bargain. They asked to be allowed to skip school next Friday and be taken to the zoo instead, where their mother would buy for them crocodile eggs in the souvenir shop. Mrs. Milton agreed to all their demands and the little girls solemnly promised to be silent, but their mother remained very uneasy.

Las nenas estaban dispuestas a negociar. Pidieron que se les permitiese faltar al cole el viernes siguiente y que se les llevase en vez al zoo, donde su madre les compraría huevos de cocodrilo en la tienda de recuerdos. La Señora Milton cedió a todas estas exigencias y las niñas prometieron solemnemente permanecer mudas, pero su madre no acababa de quedarse tranquila.

When Mrs. Vereker arrived, the girls fixed their unabashedly curious little eyes on the enormous wart on her nose and would have stared it to death had it been capable of dying in this manner, but they kept their word and their tiny, rosy little mouths shut tight.

Cuando la Señora Vereker llegó, las niñas fijaron sus desvergonzadamente curiosos ojillos en la gigantesca verruga de la nariz de dicha invitada y  hubiesen reducido la verruga a polvo como con un laser si sus ojos hubiesen tenido ese poder, pero cumplieron con su palabra y mantuvieron prietamente cerradas sus rosadas boquitas.

The tea table looked lovely, the flowers were fresh, the china was antique, the silverware sparkled, the sandwiches were dainty and the cakes simply couldn’t do more to look delicious. All was going well, but though she appeared to be calm and in control on the outside, Mrs. Milton was still very, very uneasy on the inside. She pointed delicately at the sugar bowl and in her gentle voice softly asked Mrs. Vereker, “Would you like a lump of sugar or two on your wart, madam?”

La mesa en la que se iba a servir el té estaba preciosa. Las flores eran frescas, la porcelana antigua, la plata relucía, los sándwiches tenían un aspecto exquisito y se veía a la legua que los pasteles tenían que estar deliciosos. Todo iba estupendamente, pero aunque no se le notaba nada por fuera, la Señora Milton estaba hecha un manojo de nervios por dentro. Apuntó delicadamente hacia el azucarero y preguntó con dulzura a la Señora Vereker con su suave voz, “¿Le apetece un terrón de azúcar o dos en su verruga, señora?”

After four years of sabotaged holidays, I'm not even trying to go anywhere this year. I do mean to celebrate my birthday, though. And I sure hope my cake doesn't get squashed before I can blow the candles and taste a piece of it, like it was last year. But...already strange things are happening.

Después de cuatro años de vacaciones saboteadas, ni intento irme a ninguna parte este año. Pero sí quisiera celebrar mi cumpleaños. Y espero que mi tarta no sea aplastada antes de que pueda soplar las velas y probar un trozo como lo fue el año pasado. Pero...ya han empezado a suceder cosas raras.

Why am I staring at the big birthday cake my cousin Fiona baked for me? What I find strange is that it didn't just have sugar shamrocks on it or rose-shaped candy candlesticks. It also had a figurine of a leprechaun on it. And now that little figure is gone. I know nobody has eaten it, because it wasn't edible. It can't have just walked off can it? Who knows? Leprechauns can be magical even in effigy. But... 

¿Por qué  estoy mirando fijamente la gran tarta de cumpleaños que mi prima Fiona me ha preparado? Lo que encuentro raro es que no sólo tenía tréboles de azucar y candeleros de caramelo en forma de rosas.También tenía una figurita de un léprecan. Y ahora la figurita ha desaparecido. Nadie se la ha podido comer porque no era comestible. No puede haberse ido simplemente andando, ¿verdad? ¿Pero quién sabe? Los léprecans pueden ser mágicos hasta en efigie. Pero...

If it went off walking, it will probably return when it feels like it. Give time time. Everything returns to its place. Here I was last summer saying goodbye for a while and here I am again doing the same.

Si se ha ido caminando, ya volverá cuando quiera. Da tiempo al tiempo. Todo vuelve a su lugar. Aquí estaba yo el verano pasado diciendo adiós por un tiempo y aquí estoy otra vez haciendo lo mismo. 

I usually do it in August, but this year it will be a little earlier. I leave you with the lotos-eaters, a dreamy, peaceful people who live on an island somewhere between Spain and Africa and feed on blue lotus flowers that make them forget their cares. They rarely get anything done but represent an alternative life-style some of us only enjoy in the summer.

Suelo hacerlo en agosto, pero este año será un poco antes. Os dejo con los lotófagos, un pueblo soñador y pacífico que vive en una isla entre España y África y se alimenta de la flor del loto azul que hace que olviden sus preocupaciones. Rara vez dejan nada hecho, pero representan un estilo de vida alternativo que algunos de nosotros sólo disfrutamos en verano.

Look what a curious, somewhat summery  song Mr. Shakespeare has written for those who love to lie in the shade of a leafy tree like you and I are doing while we review summer vocabulary. 'Tis not only a song but a dialogue, and I say a dialogue since it was written to be sung by two persons of different tastes.
