My father was an immigrant. He came to England from Italy. There have always been immigrants. Some years ago I wrote a tale in verse for children about Goblin Market. You have the full version in the library in your house, but to encourage you to read it, I´m going to tell you what it is about.

Mi padre era una inmigrante. Vino a Inglaterra de Italia. Siempre ha habido inmigrantes. Hace años escribí un cuento en verso para niños sobre el mercado de los goblins. Tienes la versión integra en la biblioteca de tu casa pero para animarte a que la leas te voy a contar de que va.

Yes. You can´t buy compulsively in Goblin Market. What you buy there is no more and no less than your own personality. Before you buy, you have to know what kind of a person you want to be. That´s why they shouldn´t sell to minors. First, you have to learn what kinds of persons there are. That takes time. Later, you must choose what kind of person you want to be. That is your right.

Sí. No se puede comprar a lo loco en el mercado de los goblins. Lo que compras ahí no es nada más ni nada menos que tu propia personalidad. Antes de comprar tienes que saber qué clase de persona quieres ser. Por eso los goblins no deben vender nada a los menores. Primero tenéis que aprender qué clase de personas hay. Eso requiere tiempo. Luego tendrás que escoger qué clase de persona quieres ser. Ese es tu derecho.

I only bought some colourful mushrooms that were yukky. Listen, aren´t you going to offer me anything to eat? I´m a guest, it´s only manners.

Yo sólo compré unas setas de colorines que estaban malísimas. ¿Oye, no me ofreces nada de comer? Soy una visita, es lo educado.

Once upon a time there were two sisters, Laura and Lizzie. Every evening they would fetch water from a stream, and each night they would hear the cries of the Goblin merchants, who sold a great variety of stange and mysterious fruits.

Éranse una vez dos hermanas, Laura y Lizzie. Todas las noches cogían agua de un riachuelo, y todas las noches oían los gritos de los goblins mercaderes que vendían una gran variedad de extrañas y misteriosas frutas.

One evening, being alone by the stream, Lizzie bought fruit from the goblin men, paying for it with a lock of her hair. When she ate it, she fell into a frenzy. When she came to her senses, she went home taking a seed of the fruit with her.

Una noche, estando sola junto al riachuelo, Lizzie compró fruta a los goblins, pagándola con un mechón de su pelo. Cuando la comió, le dió una especie de ataque. Cuando recuperó el conocimiento, se fue a casa llevándose una semilla de la fruta con ella.

When she told her sister what she had done, Lizzie was very upset. She reminded Laura of a friend of theirs called Jeanie, who had eaten of this fruit and who died when winter came after a period of mental and physical deterioration.

Cuando le contó a su hermana lo que había hecho, Lizzie se llevó un disgusto. Recordó a Laura que una de sus amigas llamada Jeanie, había comido de esas frutas y había muerto al llegar el invierno tras un período de deterioro físico y mental.

Soon the girls learned that Laura could no longer hear the voices of the goblins, although Lizzie still could. Laura fell into a depression. One day she remembered she had the seed and planted it. But it didn´t grow.

Enseguida las chicas se dieron cuenta de que Laura ya no podía oir las voces de los goblins, aunque Lizzie aun podía. Laura cayó en una depresión. Un día recordó que tenía una semilla y la plantó. Pero no creció.

The winter was coming and Lizzie was so worried about her sister, who seemed to be about to die, that she went to see the Goblin merchants.

El invierno se acercaba, y Lizzie estaba tan preocupada por su hermana, que parecía estar a punto de morir, que se fue a ver a los goblins mercaderes.

At first, the Goblins seemed to be friendly, but when she told them she wanted to pay with money, their attitude began to change.

Al principio parecían amables, pero cuando les dijo que quería pagar con dinero, su actitud empezó a cambiar.

Lizzie wanted to take the fruit she bought home with her, but the goblins didn´t want her to do that. They wanted her to eat it in front of them.

Lizzie quería llevarse la fruta que compró a casa con ella, pero los goblins no querían que hiciese eso. Querían que se la comiese delante de ellos.

When she refused, they attacked her, trying to force her to eat the fruit. In the stuggle, they stained her all over with the juice and the pulp of the fruit.

Cuando se negó, la atacaron, intentando forzarla a comer la fruta ahí mismo. En el forcejeo, la pringaron de arriba a abajo con el jugo y la pulpa de las frutas machacadas.

Lizzie fled home, where she advised her sister to eat what was left of the smashed fruit. Laura did this and was cured. Both lived to tell their grandchildren the story of the goblin market and the power of fraternal love.

Lizzie huyó a casa, donde aconsejo a su hermana que comiese lo que quedaba de la fruta machacada. Laura lo hizo y se curó. Ambas vivieron para contar a sus nietos la historia del mercado de los goblins y del poder del amor fraterno.

Relax. There are one hundred and thirty five.

Tranquilo. Hay ciento treinta y cinco.

I wrote this story for several reasons. What they sell at Goblin market is not always the same for all of us. I want to tell you about two kinds of products they tried to sell me. In my time women had very few ways to earn a living. If they didn´t find a husband that would support them they could choose between working in conditions that were practically slavery or becoming prostitutes, sometimes also in conditions close to slavery.

Escribí este cuento por varias razones. Lo que venden en el mercado de los goblins no es siempre lo mismo para todos nosotros. Quiero contarte sobre dos tipos de género que intentaron venderme. En mis tiempos, las mujeres tenían muy pocas formas de ganarse la vida. Si no encontraban un marido que las mantuviese, podían elegir entre trabajar en condiciones casi de esclavitud o dedicarse a la prostitución, que a veces también es un trabajo de esclavas.

Women who chose the second option were despised by the same people who had used them and pushed them to do this. This is called social hypocrisy. I tried to help these women. Many peole insulted me for doing this, for dealing with these women, for learning about life from them and for writing strange things. I couldn´t care less. I was an adult and I knew who I was. Nobody had to tell me that.

Las que elegían la segunda opción eran despreciadas por la misma gente que las utilizaba y habia empujado a ello. Eso se llama hipocresía social. Yo intenté ayudar a estas mujeres. Mucha gente me insultó por hacerlo, por tratar con estas mujeres, por aprender sobre la vida de ellas y por escribir cosas raras. Me dio igual. Yo ya era mayor de ead y sabía quién era. No tenía que decirmelo nadie.

The other fruit I am familiar with has to do with another social problem.

La otra fruta que conozco tiene que ver con otro problema social.

Look. These two are my brother, Dante Gabriel, and my sister-in-law, Elizabeth Siddall.

Mira. Estos dos son mi hermano Dante Gabriel y mi cuñada, Elizabeth Siddall.





She was a very beautiful woman, a model of the kind that was popular in my time. These kind of women were the ideal of a group of painters of the period who were called preraphaelites. My brother was one of them and he and his friends painted Elizabeth many times. In a way, she had everything, except health.

Ella era una mujer muy guapa, una modelo del tipo que se llevaba en mi época. Esta clase de mujeres eran el ideal de un grupo de pintores de la epoca que se hacíann llamar prerafaelistas. Mi hermano era uno de ellos y el y sus amigos pintaron a Elizabeth muchas veces. En cierto modo, Elizabeth lo tenía casi todo, menos salud.

In my day, a thing called laudanum - it was legal- was sold everywhere. It was made from opium and it was a drug. Many people turned to laudanum the minute they had a problem.

En mi época se vendía por todas partes - era legal - una cosa llamada láudano. Estaba hecha con opio y era una droga. Había mucha gente que en cuanto tenía un problema echaba mano del láudano.

A simple toothache could end up turning you into a drug addict. And not everyone found peace being one. Many people felt worse.

Un simple dolor de muelas podía acabar convirtiendo a una persona normal en drogadicta. Y no todas encontraban la tranquilidad siéndolo. Muchas se ponían peor.

It is true that back then medicine hadn´t advanced much and most people could only turn to remedies like these to releive their aches and pains, some very serious. These only helped at first. Later, they gave way to new problems.

Es verdad que en aquel entonces la medicina no había avanzado mucho, y la mayoría de la gente sólo podía echar mano de remedios como éste para aliviar molestias y dolencias, algunas muy graves.

Estos sólo aliviaban al principio. Luego te creaban nuevos problemas.

The thing is my sister-in-law died of an overdose after having given birth to a dead baby girl.

La cuestión es que mi cuñada murió de una sobredosis de laudano despues de haber dado a luz a una niña muerta.


My brother, Dante Gabriel, was utterly grief-stricken. He buried all the poems he had written - he was also a poet - with Lizzie. Years later, he was persuaded to exhume them. Many people criticized him for doing this, and he was never the same after that. But that is another story.

Mi hermano, Dante Gabriel, se llevó un disgusto horrible. Enterró todos los poemas que había escrito- tambien era poeta - con Lizzie. Años despues le convencieron para que los desenterrase. Mucha gente le puso verde por hacerlo y el nunca volvió a ser el mismo. Pero eso es otra historia.



What I mean to say is that things don´t affect everybody the same way. People who have the chance to help other people who have problems should be brave and do it. And those who have the chance to receive help should accept it without feeling ashamed. These things happen to everybody. I don´t know if I´ve made myself clear.

Lo que quiero decir es que las cosas no afectan igual a todo el mundo. La gente que tiene posibilidad de ayudar a los que tienen un problema a superarlo debe tener valor y hacerlo. Y los que tienen posibilidad de recibir ayuda la deben aceptar sin avergonzarse de necesitarla. Estas cosas nos pasan a todos. No se si me explico.

I think there is bread and butter and jam in the kitchen. Look, I didn´t always get along well with my sister-in-law. Nor with my brother. I´m going to show you a drawing my brother did of me on a day when I threw a tantrum. But deep down I loved them.

Creo que hay pan con mantequilla y mermelada en la cocina. Mira, yo no siempre me llevaba bien con mi cuñada. Ni con mi hermano. Te voy a enseñar un dibujo que hizó de mí mi hermano un día que me dió una rabieta. Pero en el fondo les quería.

We´ve arrived early. They´ll come. Every Tuesday afternoon they set up a fleamarket here.

Hemos llegado temprano. Vendrán. Todos los martes por la tarde montan un rastrillo aquí.

I´m glad we came ourselves. I hate to think what our father or Darcy would do if they knew about what they did to Alpin. They are so rash.

Me alegro de que hayamos venido nosotras mismas. Odio pensar lo que nuestro padre o Darcy hubiesen hecho de saber lo que le hicieron a Alpin. No tienen medida.




Branna

But we must be very careful. Goblins know a lot about other people´s weaknesses. And they can be very dangerous.

Pero tenemos que tener mucho cuidado. Los goblins conocen muy bien las debilidades de los demás. Y pueden ser muy peligrosos.







Fiona

Since Alpin ate everything there was at home, there was nothing left for us. We had to become vampires to survive. But every cloud has a silver lining. Now we are very tough. Tough as army boots.

Como Alpin se comía todo lo que había en casa, nunca quedaba nada para nosotras. Tuvimos que hacernos vampiras para sobrevivir. Pero no hay mal que por bien no venga. Ahora somos muy duras. Duras cual botas militares.

What are you talking about? We don´t know anything about that.

¿De que hablas? Nosotros no sabemos nada de eso.

Look here, we´ve come to warn you that you´d better not mess around with our brother.

Mirad, venimos a advertiros de que mas vale que no os volváis a meter con nuestro hermano.






Goblin

Your brother is a changeling, sweetheart. He isn´t just a born consumer. He´s cannon fodder for vendors. There´s no changing him. Why don´t you forget about him and buy something pretty for yourselves?

Tu hermano es un hada hambrona, bonita. No es sólo un consumidor nato. Es carne de cañon para los vendedores. No tiene arreglo. ¿Por qué no os olvidáis de él y compráis algo bonito para vosotras?








Fiona

It remains to be seen if he can be changed or not. Keep away from him.

Lo de que no tiene arreglo está por ver. Manteneos alejados de él.









Goblin 3

And if not, what are you going to do? Bite us? Do it, wilting blondie. We´re dying for it.

¿Y si no que vais a hacer? ¿Mordernos? Hazlo, rubita desvaída. Si estamos deseando.














Branna

We´re not going to fall into that trap. It´s your boss we´re going to bite. Do you think we don´t know you are full of s***? But your boss surely isn´t. He´s sure to take good care not to take the fruit he sells.

No vamos a caer en esa trampa. Al que vamos a morder es a vuestro jefe. ¿Crees que no sabemos que estáis hasta arriba de m*****? Pero seguro que vuestro jefe no. El seguro que se cuida bien de no tomar la fruta que vende.
