Michael´s 2010 Halloween Party / Fiesta de Halloween 2010 de Michael

Leafies / Hojitas

Havah happy Halloween!

¡Papasad un feliz Halloween!

Glorvina

Wooooooooooooooooe!

¡Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Aislene

Well, the party is sure off to a good start if the banshee begins to wail. What was that about? Oh, who cares! As I was saying,  my advice to mothers is, get your children a bodyguard. I´ve never enjoyed a summer as much as I have the past. Relax! Relax! Relax! That's all I´ve done.

¡Relajarme! ¡Relajarme! ¡Relajarme! Eso es todo lo que he hecho.

Lira

I´m thinking maybe I should get someone to watch my husband.  But it has to be someone I can trust. Is Curmudgeon available?

Estoy pensando que tal vez debería contratar a alguien para vigilar a mi marido. Pero tiene que ser de fiar. ¿Está disponible Cascarrabias?

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Binks, now that we´ve had a couple of drinks and mean to have some more, it´s time for a toast! To the headmaster of your dream school!

Mungo Binky

Curmudgeon Finn? Well, I know Curmudgeon can now read, but I´m not sure he will be adequate. This isn´t a regular school. This is a school to teach the fairy people how to coexist with humans. What does Finn know about humans?

¿Cascarrabias Finn?

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Curmudgeon! Curmudgeon indeed! ´Tis me, the man here before you, that is your man, Binky! I, I am the man! I taught Curmudgeon how to read! I gave him a reason to learn! That´s motivation, Binky! I´m the best of teachers! I´m the top! I´m the tower of Pisa! I´m the Mona Lisa! I´m Napoleon Brandy! And all that jazz.

¡Cascarrabias! ¡Yo! ¡Yo soy el hombre! Yo enseñe a leer a Cascarrabías. ¡Le di un motivo para aprender! ¡Eso sí que es motivar, Binky! ¡Soy el mejor de los maestros! ¡Soy el no va más! ¡Soy la torre de Pisa! ¡Soy la Mona Lisa! ¡Soy brandy Napoleón! Y todo lo demás.

Mungo Binky

Oh. Oh, I see. What can I say? Erh, I´m sure you´re a born teacher, Boogerbeard. But we´ve got to give credit where it's due. If Michael hadn´t given Curmudgeon the video and Curmudgeon hadn´t had the patience to watch it over a thousand times... But, in any case, like I said, I need someone who understands humans and...don´t be offended, please, but I was thinking of someone who might give the impression of being a little more...respectable.

Oh. Oh, entiendo.

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

But that´s why I want to do this. To turn respectable! Look here, Binks. I understand human motivation better than anyone does. I´m perfect for this! But there is one condition. Those who flunk get eaten. By me. There´s no other way I will do this, because it´s the only way that works.

Pero por eso quiero hacer esto. ¡Para volverme respetable! Mira, Binquito.

Mungo Binky

I...I don´t see how I can meet that requirement. It doesn´t seem fair to make school compulsory and then devour the underachievers.

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

What! Name another way of getting people who don´t want to learn to learn! Name one! There´s no other way! Binks, if you don´t see things my way, I´m bound to feel hurt. And let me warn you, Binks, I don´t take kindly to being disappointed. And there´s a lot of villains very similar to me out there who will want to know why I´m not good enough for you and your school. The Vicious Villains' Society will want to know why I can´t be headmaster of your school, Binks. You´ll have a lot of explaining to do and...Hardy, har, har, Binks! You´re going yellow-green! It´s a joke, mate! You don´t understand my sense of humour!

Mungo Binky

What do I have to laugh at? What you just said or what you said before that?

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Someone like me has better things to do than teach, Binks! You know what they say. If you can do, do. And if you can´t do, teach. Since we are drinking together, I will reveal to you my secret plans! I mean to bring gas and electricity to Bumps Island. I´m going to build a power station or two there so those nitwits can live by night without losing more neurons. On a sunny island like that, they don´t need artificial lighting for anything. It´s like selling ice to the Eskimos But since the Bumps are stupid, let them learn to pay bills and make me rich!

Curmudgeon Finn / Cascarrabias Finn

And Salty is letting me in on this. Now that I know how to read, I´m just the person to supervise the construction of the power plants and to run them once they´re ready. Salty´s going to give me half the benefits.

Basiliska

Curmudgeon, you hunk! How nice to see you again!

¡Cascarrabias, tío bueno! ¡Qué estupendo volverte a ver!

Mungo Binky

And you, Boogerbeard, are going to call this progress?

¿Y usted, Barbamocos, va a llamar a esto progreso?

Arley

Achooo!

¡Achís!

Leafy Thaddeus / Tadeo Hojuela

Binky is conspiring with developers! Get them!

Michael

It wouldn´t be my Halloween party without a fight. Well, have a happy Halloween, you who can.

Mildew Finn

Today is library day. Although it is Sunday, the Job Hobbs Library is open. Actually, it is always open on Sundays, because Sunday is a very good day to visit a library. We're open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There may be people who say I haven't got a life, but they're wrong. I have an infinite number of lives. You multiply your lives when you read.

So, take one from the shelves.

Así que saca uno de las estanterías.

Colon Man / El hombre de Colón

This is a lovely CD and one of the cutest songs in it is "Colon Man."

The so-called Colon Men were laborers from the West Indies who had emigrated to Panama to work in the construction of the Panama Canal, a path between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Colon is one of the most important cities of this country. Many considered these men unfortunate because they worked hard and earned little, but in their homeland they were admired and respected because they had made a real effort to better themselves, had returned home with money earned and saved and had seen a bit of the world. The man in this song wears a zoot suit. These type of suit was very popular among fans of jazz music and rebelious teenagers in the 1940's.  As you can see in the pictures of zoot suits we found on the Internet, these were decorated by a long chain like those worn with watches, but in this case with no watch attached. That's why the man looks up at the sun when he is asked for the time of day. His countrywomen, however, when they see he looks sad, are quick to tell him that they aren´t laughing at him. They laugh with him.

Below are pictures of  zoot suits we found in Images from the Internet.

Here are the lyrics so you can sing along with the CD. It´s nice to hear how they speak English in the West Indies. We also translated the song in case there is something in English you need to know in Spanish.

The Return of the Abducted / El regreso de los raptados

Sick of waiting for Mungo Binky to authorize himself to leave the realm of fairy, and with good reason to fear that Alpin will interfere irremediably with the sustainable development of his island, the pirate Salty Boogerbeard has taken to sea in his ghost ship with a crew of animated skeletons and four prisoners, one of them an apprentice tyrant.

Alpin

Row! Row, you losers! Halloween and its goodies await me! I don´t want to miss out on that because of your incompetence, blasted idlers !

¡Remad! ¡Remad, perdedores!

 Skeleton Boatswain / Esqueleto contramaestre

Captain Boogerbeard, either you throw that son of a five letter word overboard or we mutiny!

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Sorry, lad, but you´ll have to shut your trap or I´ll send you to empty the sea of algae.
My crew doesn´t find your nagging as funny as I do.

Michael

Blessed St. Barbara, if you allow a bolt of lightning to sink this ship I will give you twenty euros. I don´t want to get home before Halloween and have to organize my annual party. I´ll give you fifty!

St. Barbara / Santa Barbara

Too late. Maybe some other time.

Demasiado tarde. Otra vez será.

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

I said ship ahoy!

¡He dicho barco a la vista!

Mungo Binky

Ship ahoy? In a clearing in the middle of a forest?

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Gangway!

¡Barco va!

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

Did you see that? The ship almost squashed him.

¿Has visto eso? El barco casi lo aplasta.

Leafy Bob / Robertico Hojuela

But it hasn´t.

Pero no lo ha hecho.

Salty / Saladito

Greetings, Mr. Port Authority! When there´s water we sail, when there isn´t we fly! We´re versatile. Haven´t you heard of The Flying Kaphre?

¡Albricias, Sr. Autoridad Portuaria! Cuando hay agua navegamos. Cuando no, volamos. Somos versátiles. ¿No ha oído del Kafre Errante?

Mungo Binky

Never. But I hoped never to. What can I do for you?

Nunca.

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Don´t ask what you can do for me. Ask me what I can do for you. You´re going to love this.

Mungo Binky

For me? Nobody ever has done a thing for me. Only I for others. What could you possibly do?

¿Por mi? Nadie jamás ha hecho nada por mí. Sólo yo por los demás. ¿Qué podría hacer usted?

Alpin

Hey, sailors! Hey, everybody! Free drinks! Let´s go party! Follow me to the Jealous Merrow´s Pub! My cousin Michael will treat us to a Halloween bash!

¡Eh, marineros! ¡Bebida gratis!

Will anyone rescue Arley? / ¿Rescatará alguien a Arley?

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

Binky ahoy!

¡Binky a la vista!

Thistle / Cardo

Listen, Mr. Binky, when are you going to go ransom Arley?

Mungo Binky

Oh, that. Yes, we´ll have to do that. As soon as I have time I´ll  make myself a  passport. One must always have a passport when one travels to an unchartered island lost in the Pacific.Very dangerous not to.Well, I´d love to stay and solve your little problem right now, sweeties, but I´m on my way to Wonderland. I have someone to see there that just can´t wait.

Heather /Brezo

Mr. Binky, we´ve got a map. And you are right. Salty Boogerbeard´s island isn´t on it. But the Bumps´ island is. And they must be near each other. But how does one get there? Not through the drain of Alpin´s pool, I hope. The water must be freezing this time of year.

Leafy Bob / Robertico Hojuela

Little girls, if you want to get results, speak with Fergus MacLob O´Toora. Leprechauns are experts at  negotiating ransoms. That´s what they have pots of gold for.

However, fate will reunite the kids sooner than they think.

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

Ship ahoy!

¡Barco a la vista!

Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Hecate / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Hécate

Since it will soon be Halloween, I believe it might be convenient for me to introduce you to a lady who knows how to keep  evil spirits at bay. The main duty of the goddess Hecate is to watch all entrances through which evil spirits can sneak in and wreak havoc, preventing them from causing trouble. We the ancients depended on her to defend the doors of our homes. But one has to be very careful not to offend her because if she is piqued she refuses to do her work and then anything can happen. Her favorite animals are, of course, watchdogs, because they help her with her job.

Perhaps you are wondering which of the three young misses in the drawing is Hecate. She happens to be all three. Since she has such a tough job, she has to be worth three times as much as anyone else. That´s why she is triform. Sometimes she appears as three young women, like in the drawing. But other times she chooses to be a little girl, a young woman and an old lady at the same time. On occasions she has appeared without her human heads, wearing in their place the heads of animals, generally those of a horse, a boar and a dog.

Though her job is hectic and demanding, Hecate finds time for her favorite hobby, which is potion-brewing. In the drawing, she is surrounded by some of the plants she employs when practicing it. Many of them, such as belladonna, foxglove and mandrake can be quite poisonous. But Hecate also loves non-toxic plants. One of her favorites is garlic.

Now we´ll do a very mini mini quiz. I hope you get it all right. And if we don´t see each other again till after the 31st, make sure you have a happy Halloween.

1. What is Hecate´s job? / ¿Cúal es el trabajo de Hécate?
2. Which are Hecate´s favorite animals? Why? / ¿Cúales son los animales favoritos de Hécate? ¿Por qué?
3. Why does Hecate know a lot about plants?

When we can, we will dedicate a post to London Bridge and its ghosts. Meanwhile, have a look at this video taken in the London bridge dungeon. If you look closely, you might spot what could be a spectre. Experts who have examined this video can´t explain it.

For rappers who are Halloween enthusiasts / Para raperos que son forofos de Halloween

Turn back, ye who don't approve of rap. This post is for pupils who are rappers. Well, and for those who understand that rap does happen to be an art. Like it or not, don't mess with the Halloween King on the 31st, or you might be hit by something worse than karma.

Below is another video that shows you how to make the Halloween King's mask. Should you care to try and unless you have a diploma from a recognized school or university that states you are an expert at making things like this, ask an adult who is creative to help you with it. Ask anyway.

I was working in the lab,
Late one night,
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight,
For my monster from his slab began to rise,
And suddenly to my surprise..
(He did the mash) He did the monster mash,
(The monster mash) It was a graveyard smash,
(He did the mash) It caught on in a flash,
(He did the mash) He did the monster mash,
(wa-oo) From my labratory in the castle East,
(wa-oo) To the master bedroom where the vampires feast,
(wa, wa-oo) The ghouls all came from their humble abodes,
(wa-oo) To get a jolt, from my electrodes.
(they did the mash) They did the monster mash,
(the monster mash) It was a graveyard smash,
(they did the mash) It caught on in a flash,
(they did the mash) They did the monster mash,
(wa-ooo) The zombies were having fun,
(anashoop wa-oo) The party had just begun,
(anashoop wa-oo) The guests included wolfman,
(anashoop wa-oo) Dracula and his son
(wa-ooo) The scene was rocking, oh we're digging the sounds,
(wa-oo) Igor on chains backed by baying hounds,
(wa-oo) The coffin bangers were about to arrive,
(wa-oo) With their vocal group, the Crypt-Kicker Five
(they played the mash) They played the monster mash,
(the monster mash) It was a graveyard smash,
(they played the mash) It caught on in a flash,
(they played the mash) They played the monster mash
(wa-oo) Out from his coffin Drac's voice did ring,
(wa-oo) seems he was troubled by just one thing,
(wa, wa-oo) Open the lid, and shook his fist and said
(wa-oo) 'Whatever happened to my Transylvanian Twist?'
(it's now the mash) It's now the monster mash,
(the monster mash) And it's a graveyard smash,
(it's now the mash) It's caught on in a flash,
(it's now the mash) It's now the monster mash.
(wa-oo) Now everything's cool, Drac's a part of the band,
(wa-oo) And my monster mash is the hit of the land,
(wa, wa-oo) For you the living, this mash was meant too,
(wa-oo) When you get to my door, tell them Borris sent you.
(Then you can mash) Then you can monster mash,
(the monster mash) and do my graveyard smash,
(then you can mash) You'll catch on in a flash,
(then you can mash) Then you can monster mash.
