Capricorn / Capricornio

Hi. One year ago the constellations of the zodiac started visiting this blog. The cycle began with Aquarius, and I, of the constellation you call Capricorn, am here to close it. I´ve been in this blog before, in Nauta´s Mini Mythology number VIII, in which Nauta told you about Zeus the king of the gods, and about me, the nymph Amalthea. I was Zeus´nurse when he was a baby and his mother had to hide him. I fed him with milk from my herd of goats. To thank me, he gave me the cornucopia, or horn of plenty, from which all sorts of good things flow ceaselessly. And he also put the constellation Capra up in the sky to honor me. So here I am along with my herd and other goats.

Hola. Hace un año que las constelaciones del zodiaco empezaron a visitar este blog. El ciclo comenzó en enero con Acuario, y yo, de la constelación que llamáis Capricornio, vengo a cerrarlo. He estado en este blog antes, en la Mini Mitología de Nauta número VIII, en la que Nauta os habló de Zeus, rey de los dioses, y de mí, la ninfa Amaltea. Yo fui la nodriza de Zeus cuando era un bebé y su madre le tuvo que ocultar. Le alimenté con la leche de mi rebaño de cabras. En agradecimiento me dió la cornucopia, el cuerno de la abundancia del que fluyen incesantemente toda clase de cosas buenas. Y también pusó la constelación Capra en el firmamento para honrarme.

Aigipan

I´m up there too. I´m half goat and half fish. I helped Zeus fight against the monstrous Typhon, also mentioned in the myth of Piscis, in our Mini Zodiac and against the Titans (Mini Mythology II). These last stole his sinews so that he couldn´t fight but I returned them to him.

Yo estoy aquí arriba también. Soy un dios que es medio cabra y medio pez y que ayudó a Zeus a luchar contra el monstruoso Tifón, mencionado en el mito de Piscis, que está en nuestro Mini Zodiaco. También le ayude a luchar contra los Titanes (Mini Mitología II). Le robaron los tendones para que no pudiese luchar y yo se los devolví.

Hi. I am Chiron the Archer, first of the Centaurs, physican, sportsman, musician and possibly the most famous teacher in Greek mythology. I count among my many talented pupils the heroes Hercules, Achilles, Jason and Peleus and the god of medicine, Aesclepius.

Why am I up in the firmanent? Unlike the other centaurs, I was born immortal. But one day Herakles wounded me accidentally with an arrow he had dipped in the venom of the Hydra. Since I was immortal, I could not die. But my wound was so painful life became unbearable for me.

For a time I was thought there was no one in the world who suffered more than I did, but there was. This was Prometheus, whose liver was perpetually being gnawed by an eagle. When I realized how Prometheus suffered, I sympathized with him. In fact, I felt so sorry for him that I called on my half-brother Zeus and spoke in his behalf. I offered to give up my gift of immortality if Zeus would release Prometheus.

Durante un tiempo pensé que no había nadie en el mundo que pudiese estar sufriendo más que yo, pero lo había. Era Prometeo, cuyo hígado estaba siendo perpetuamente picoteado por un águila. Zeus was touched by my noble gesture. I died, Prometheus was released, and then Zeus put me up among the stars so that people would remember how I had sacrificed myself to save another. I pass the time up here shooting at shooting stars.

Sixteen of my stars have planets, more than any other constellation. And my brightest stars form an asterism called "The Teapot."

Scorpio / Escorpio

Yes, I left two of my arms at home. Hey, there! I´m Scorpio! Better late than never! Better six-armed than unarmed! To begin with, I apologize for being late. I should have arrived in October. But it´s the hunting season, and I´ve been really very busy reminding hunters to be at least ecological. And now I´m going to say that my story is one of those tales of epic fights, like Leo and Cancer´s. But I think you´ll find mine has something special, because I fought for a good cause.

Sí, he dejado dos de mis brazos en casa. ¡Eh, hola! ¡Soy Escorpio! ¡Mejor tarde que nunca! ¡Mejor seis brazos que ninguno! Para empezar, pido perdón por llegar tarde. Tenía que haber aparecido por aquí en octubre, pero durante esta estación se caza, y he estado muy ocupado recordándoles a los cazadores que deben ser al menos ecológicos. Y ahora os voy a adelantar que mi historia es una de esas sobre peleas épicas, como las de Leo y Cáncer. Pero creo que la mía tiene algo de especial, porque luché por una buena causa.

It all started with a vain and cruel giant named Orion. He was so tall that when his feet where at the bottom of the sea, his head remained above the water. He was also said to be the handsomest man ever. But that wasn´t enough for him.

Todo empezó con un gigante cruel y vanidoso llamado Orión. Era tan alto que cuando sus pies tocaban el fondo del mar, su cabeza seguía por encima del agua. También se decía que era el más guapo de todos los hombres mortales. Pero no le bastó con eso.

Orion decided he also wanted the title of alltime bigtime hunter. And he figured the way to win it was to kill every existing animal before anyone else did. So, he went on a rampage.

Orión decidió que también quería el título de mejor cazador de todos los tiempos. Y pensó que la forma de lograrlo consistía en matar a todos los animales existentes antes de que otro lo hiciera. Así que se puso a matar a lo loco.





But while he was about it, he attracted the attention of the sun god and the moon goddess, Apollo and Diana, who were excellent archers and also involved with hunting. Although they were hunters themselves, Apollo and Diana had a different way of understanding hunting. They felt it was stupid and cruel to exterminate animals just for the sake of killing them. And they decided to do something about Orion. That something was me.

Pero mientras estaba en ello atrajo la atención del dios del sol y la diosa de la luna, Apolo y Diana, que, eran excelentes arqueros y también aficcionados a cazar. Aunque eran cazadores, Apolo y Diana tenían una manera distinta de ver la caza. Pensaban que era estúpido y cruel exterminar a los animales, matando por matar. Y decidieron ocuparse de Orión. Y se ocuparon acudiendo a mí.

I was asked to stop Orion. I saw how the survival of the animal kingdom depended on me and I gallantly rose to the challenge. A fight between the giant and myself was soon organized. I choose my sting for a weapon. Orion chose his club. When I stepped into the ring, I knew I had to be really quick, or Orion would bash me with his club and all would be lost.

Me pidieron que detuviese a Orión. Yo comprendí que la supervivencia del reino animal dependía de mí y respondí al reto. Pronto se organizó una pelea entre el gigante y yo. Yo elegí mi aguijón como arma. Orión eligió su mazo. Cuando entré en el ring, supe que tendría que ser muy rápido u Orión me aplastaría con su mazo y todo estaría perdido.

We had a big fight. Noisy enough to attract the attention of Zeus, king of the gods. I dodged Orion´s club for hours, doing the only thing I could which was wear him out, and finally he tired befoe I did and I got my chance to bite him. He was a huge guy but I was a giant of a scorpion myself. So I had enough poison in me to knock him out permanently and that was the end of that.

Tuvimos una tremenda pelea. Lo suficientemente sonada como para atraer la atención de Zeus, el rey de los dioses. Yo esquivé a Orión durante horas, haciendo lo único que podía hacer, que era agotarle, y finalmente tuve mi oportunidad de picarle. Era un tiarrón enorme, pero yo era un escorpión gigante, así que tenía suficiente veneno como para tumbarle de forma permanente y ése fue el fin de eso.

Zeus enjoyed the combat so much that he gave me a place among the stars. He even put Orion´s ghost up there too, where he couldn´t do any more harm and served as a warning to other hunters that they would not be allowed to go too far.

Zeus disfrutó del combate tanto que me dió un lugar entre las estrellas. Hasta colocó al difunto Orión ahí arriba, donde no podía hacer más daño y servía como advertencia a los demás cazadores para que no se pasasen de la raya.

And now, a word about my constellation. It´s a pretty big one. And it´s got lots of really shiny stars. My most famous star is Antares, which is so red that it rivals the planet Mars.

Y ahora unas cuantas palabras sobre mi constelación. Es bastante grande y tiene un montón de estrellas muy brillantes. La más famosa de mis estrellas es Antares, que es tan roja que rivaliza con Marte.

At the end of my tail are two stars, quite close together, that are known as the Cat´s Eyes.

and the insect or butterfly nebulosae. This last is one of the most complex we know of.

Scorpio has several star clusters. Below is a picture of the Ptolemy Cluster, which is named after me. I´m Claudius Ptolemaeus, a famous first century BC astronomer who saw these stars with the naked eye.

Hi. Libra is the only sign that is not represented by a living being, so I said I would be here with my golden scales to represent Libra, and here I am, Justice in person. What I didn´t bring is the sword or the blindfold I am often pictured with. People say justice is blind, but I certainly am not.

Hola. Libra es el único signo que no está representado por un ser vivo, así que prometí estar aquí con mi balanza de oro para representar a Libra y aquí estoy, la Justicia en persona. No he traído ni la espada ni la venda para taparme los ojos con las que con frecuencia se me retrata. La gente dice que la justicia es ciega, pero os aseguro que no lo soy en absoluto.

There are two kinds of justice, the human and the divine. Divine justice comes from heaven above, sees all and knows perfectly well what it is doing. It is the human judges who are blind because they weren´t present when things they have to judge happened. They were not, for example, present at the scene of a crime the person they are judging may or may not have committed. So they never saw what went on there. All they can do is listen to what the defendant and his lawyer and the prosecutor have to say.

Hay dos clases de justicia, la humana y la divina. La justicia divina baja del cielo, lo ve todo y sabe perfectamente lo que está haciendo. Son los jueces humanos los que son "ciegos" porque no estaban presentes cuando los hechos que tienen que juzgar acontecieron. Human justice isn´t even the same everywhere. What is a terrible crime in one country might not even be a minor offence in another. Many of the kids who go partying and frequent "botellones" probably don´t know that there are people in this world who are flogged nearly to death for drinking a beer.

La justicia humana ni siquiera es igual en todas partes. Lo que es un crimen terrible en un país puede no ser ni una pequeña ofensa en otro. But aside from really tragic cases, there are also laws that are so absurd they are funny. In France, it is illegal to call a pig Napoleon. In England, nobody is allowed to die inside the house of parliament because anyone that does has a right to a state funeral and that is very expensive. In Australia, it is illegal to dress up as Batman. In Illinois, is is illegal to speak English. The official language is "American."

Pero además de casos realmente trágicos, también hay leyes que son tan absurdas que resultan cómicas. En Francia, es ilegal llamar a un cerdo Napoleón. En Inglaterra no se permite que nadie se muera dentro del parlamento porque cualquiera que lo hiciese tendría derecho a un funeral de estado y eso sale muy caro. En Australia es delito disfrazarse de Batman. En Illinois es ilegal hablar inglés. La lengua oficial es el "americano."

In most European countries, there are a lot of written laws that regulate almost everything. Many are compiled in codes. But in most Anglo-Saxon countries there are very few written laws. It is the judge who decides what is just and what isn´t, taking into account precedent - which is what other judges have done before him in similar cases. There is no law in England that prohibits murder. In fact, there is a law that allows one to murder any Scotsman who is carrying a bow and arrow within the city of York. Murderers simply have been judged by courts for centuries and that is why they are still judged and sent to prison.

En la mayoría de los países europeos hay un montón de leyes escritas que lo regulan casi todo. Muchas se recogen en códigos. Pero en la mayoría de los países anglo-sajones hay muy pocas leyes escritas. Es el juez el que decide lo que es y no es justo, teniendo en cuenta los precedentes, que son lo que otros jueces han hecho antes que él en casos similares. I almost forgot. There is yet another type of justice. It is called poetic justice and it occurs when someone gets exactly what he or she deserves in a specially appropriate or ironic way. In literature, poetic justice most frequently happens when someone prepares a trap for another person and then gets caught in his or her own trap.

Casi se me olvida. Todavía hay otro tipo de justicia. Se llama justicia poética y ocurre cuando alguien recibe exactamente lo que se merece de forma especialmente apropiada o irónica. En la literatura, la justicia poética se da con frecuencia cuando alguien prepara una trampa para otra persona y acaba cayendo él mismo en su propia trampa.

Our story is an example of poetic justice because the witch who kidnapped us was burnt to death in the oven in which she wanted to bake us.

I´m the king of Babylon who produced one of the first written codes of law. You can find a copy in the Louvre. One example from my code is, if the son of a man dies because his house falls on top of him, the son of the architect must be killed. Today, it is regarded by civilized people as very cruel, but in my time I thought that it was very just and that I was very clever to have endorsed it.

Hestia

Virgo is several of us. And some of us are here to explain what this constellation is about. In one word, it´s about independence. I´m Hestia, the goddess of home and hearth. Apollo, god of the sun (Mini Mythology IX, July 2008) and Poseidon, god of the sea, both wanted to marry me. I saw at once they were more interested in competing with each other than in making me happy. I decided not to chose between them. Instead of having my own home, I decided to dedicate my time and effort to making other people happy. I couldn´t change the world. But I could help people make a haven of their homes. I´m the goddess who makes your home feel safe and cosy. People say I´m nice to everyone and am kind and warm. Tradition says that all you have to do to feel my comforting presence is light a little orange candle.

Virgo somos varias. Y algunas de nosotras estamos aquí para explicar de qué va esta constelación. En una sóla palabra, va de independencia. Yo soy Hestia, la diosa del hogar. Apolo, dios del sol (Mini Mitología IX, julio del 2008) y Poseidón, dios del mar, quisieron casarse conmigo. En seguida me di cuenta de que estaban más interesados en competir entre sí que en hacerme feliz. Decidí no elegir entre ellos. En vez de tener mi propio hogar, decidí dedicar mi tiempo y mi esfuerzo a hacer felices a los demás. No podía cambiar el mundo. Pero podía hacer de los hogares un buen refugio. Astraea

My name means "starry maiden." I´m virtue herself. I have the answers to most of the world´s problems. But I´m not popular. People would rather make their own mistakes than listen to my suggestions. I got tired of being insulted at worst and at best ignored. I left the earth and moved to live on the moon.

Mi nombre significa "doncella de las estrellas." Soy la virtud personificada. Tengo la respuesta a casi todos los problemas de la humanidad. Pero no soy popular. La gente prefiere cometer sus propios errores a seguir mis sugerencias. Me harté de que me insultasen a lo peor y me ninguneasen a lo mejor. Abandoné la tierra y me fui a vivir a la luna.

Kore

Often Virgo is depicted holding a corn cob or a sheaf of corn. It´s because of me. You know who I am. I´m Demeter´s daughter and Hades´wife (Mini Mythology), Persephone or Proserpine. People also call me Kore, which means "the maiden." I am the goddess of the harvest, and Virgo is present in September, which is harvestime in many countries. I may not look very independent. It may look like I am always being bossed around by my mother and my husband, but the truth is they can´t do without me. Leo the Lion / Leo el León

Hello! It´s the last week of July and I´m Leo the Lion, here as the new sign of the zodiac. My story is similar to Cancer the Crab´s.

¡Hola! Es la última semana de julio y soy Leo el León y estoy aquí por ser el nuevo signo del zodiaco. Mi historia se parece bastante a la de Cáncer el Cangrejo.

I wasn´t an earthling. My mother was the lunar goddess Selene (mini mythology X). I was born in the moon where I lived quite happily...and peacefully. There is no record of my ever having attacked anyone up there.

Yo no era un terrícola. Mi madre era la diosa lunar Selene (mini mitología X). Nací en la luna, donde vivía feliz...y pacíficamente. No hay noticias de que yo haya atacado a nadie ahí arriba.

But one day the queen of the gods, Hera, (mini mythology VIII) brought me down to earth with the sinister purpose of having me draw out her stepson Herakles, whom she hated.

Yes, that Herakles or Hercules, the superhumanly strong fellow who also killed the Hydra of Lake Lerna and squashed Cancer the Crab while he was about it.

Since Herakles was a hero and went about slaying monsters and beasts, Hera hoped I would have to eat him up to defend my life.

He couldn´t hurt me with his bow because the arrows he shot at me only bounced off my hide.

The same thing happened when he tried to bash me to death with his club.

So what he did was strangle me. All I got to do to him before he ended my life was tear off one of his little fingers. So I suppose I wasn´t as tough as everyone wanted to think I was. I just had great fur.

Así que lo que hizo fue estrangularme. Lo único que yo le hice a él antes de que me matase fue arrancarle un dedo meñique, así que no creo que yo fuese tan terrible como todos querían que fuese. Sólo tenía una piel extraordinaria.

Herakles realized this, and not content with murdering me, he skinned me and made himself a protective cloak out of my hide. That way arrows bounced off him too.

Heracles se dio cuenta de esto y no se conformó con asesinarme, sino que también me despellejó y se fabricó una especie de capa protectora con mi piel. De esa manera las flechas que le disparaban también rebotaban en lugar de hacerle daño.

As was to be expected, my mother, the moon goddess, made a big fuss about all this business and Hera felt obliged to find me a place among the stars. So that´s why I have my own constellation. I also got my fur back. But I still have a trauma and low self-esteem.

Como era de esperar, mi madre, la diosa de la luna, montó un cirio ante estos hechos y Hera se sintió obligada a encontrarme un lugar entre las estrellas. Y así es como llegué a tener mi propia constelación. También me devolvieron la piel. Pero todavía tengo un trauma, y baja autoestima.

There are many bright stars in my constellation. One of the brightest is Regulus, the lion´s heart. Together with others it forms the shape of a sickle that represents my head and mane.

Denebola is another of my stars and it means “lion´s tail.”

When I am prominent in the sky, which is in the summer, the river Nile is brimming and the lions that lived by it used to fight the heat by gathering near its waters.

They also call me the star of Bacchus because this wine god is said to be my father and because I´m around watching how the grapes grow for the harvest coming in September.

Cancer the Crab / Cáncer el cangrejo

Hi. I´m Cancer, the Crab. I´m up in the heavens because I won a lawsuit.

¡Hola! Soy Cáncer, el cangrejo. Estoy en el firmamento porque gané un pleito.

When I lived on earth, in Lake Lerna, I had for a neighbour the famous Lernaean Hydra, the Giant Serpent of Lerna, a creature with nine heads, only one of which was immortal, but the rest of which would grow back when cut, sometimes two in place of one.

Cuando vivía en la tierra, en el lago de Lerna, tenía por vecina a la famosa Hidra de Lerna, la serpiente gigante lerneana, una criatura con nueve cabezas, de las cuales sólo una era inmortal, aunque las demás se regeneraban, y a veces por partida doble, nada más cortadas.

The Hydra was the guardian of one of those portals which are entrances to the netherworld, and a very good guardian she was too. If she had to eat up a fool who had dared to try to sneak into such a nefarious place, she did it without blinking. She wasn´t being mean. It was her job. After all, you are not supposed to enter Hades unless you´re dead, and that was where the foolish trespassers wanted to go, wasn´t it?

La hidra guardaba uno de esos portales por los que se puede entrar al infierno, y lo hacía muy bien. Si de vez en cuando se tenía que zampar a algún insensato que intentaba colarse en tan nefasto lugar, pues lo hacía sin pestañear. No estaba siendo cruel. Era su trabajo. Despues de todo, se supone que no puedes entrar en el infierno si no estás muerto, y eso era lo que querían hacer los invasores insensatos ¿o no?

Not that she had to put up a personal fight often, for her breath was so venomous that just to breathe the vapours that rose from the lake where we lived would permanently knock out many a trespasser. In brief, she was not the ideal neighbour, but she did keep trespassers at bay.

No es que la hidra tuviese que enfrentarse personalmente a muchos con frecuencia, pues su aliento era tan venenoso que bastaba con respirar los vapores que emanaban de nuestro lago para que la mayoría de los intrusos cayesen fulminados de forma permanente. En breve, no era la vecina ideal, pero mantenía a los intrusos a raya.

One dire day there showed up near our home a hero you have probably heard of, since he is famous for being one of the strongest men that have ever lived - Hercules, also known as Herakles.

Un día oscuro apareció por estos parajes un héroe cuyo nombre probablemente os suena por tratarse de uno de los hombres más fuertes que jamás hayan vivido: Hércules, también conocido como Heracles.

This fellow was determined to do my poor neighbour in and should he prove to be less than what was needed for the job, he had brought along with him his nephew Iolaus, another muscular hulk who aspired to the title of brute of the year.

Este individuo estaba decidido a cargarse a mi pobre vecina, y por si no bastase con lo bruto que era, se trajo a su sobrino Yolao, otro grandullón con ínfulas de bestia parda.

Hercules began to chop off the heads of the hydra with a sickle, while Iolaus burnt the necks with a torch so that the heads could not grow back or multiply. When the only head left was the immortal one, I felt so outraged at such an unequal combat that I decided it was my duty to help my neighbour and charged against her enemies. I got to prick Iolaus big toe with my pincers before big man Hercules stomped me flat.

Hércules se lió a cortar las cabezas de la hidra con una hoz, mientras que Yolao quemaba los muñones con una tea para que no se regenerasen ni multiplicasen las cabezas. Cuando quedaba sólo la cabeza inmortal, yo me sentí tan indignado ante tan desigual combate, que decidí que hay que ayudar a los vecinos cuando están en apuros y me lanzé al ataque. Llegué a picarle el dedo gordo a Yolao, pero el mastodonte de Hércules me pegó un pisotón que me dejó planchado.

On my way to the other world I learned that Hercules had been sent to kill the Hydra by his stepmother, Hera, the queen of the gods. Everybody told me I had grounds to sue them. I put down all this stuff in a written document and I sued Hercules, who in turn sued his stepmother.

Camino del otro barrio, me enteré de que a Hércules le había mandado a matar a la hidra su madrastra, Hera, la reina de los dioses. Todo el mundo me decía que tenía caso y podía demandarles. Redacté un documento narrando todos estos hechos y demandé a Hércules que repitió contra su madrastra.

Hera decided to settle this out of court. She offered me a place among the stars if I agreed to let the case drop. I accepted. End of the story.

Hera decidió solucionar esto fuera de los tribunales. Me ofreció un lugar entre las estrellas si me olvidaba de todo el asunto. Acepté. Fín de la historia.

The truth is it´s not a very good place. I don´t shine much. In fact, my constellation is famous for being a little dim. I don´t mind. I´m a bit of a hermit and prefer to be in the dark. But I do belong to the zodiac and I get to be in the spotlight on the very first day of summer, which makes me very popular with people about to enjoy holidays.

La verdad es que no es un lugar muy bueno. No brillo mucho. Soy una constelación con fama de apagadita. No me importa. Tengo algo de hermitaño y prefiero estar en la oscuridad. Pero pertenezco al zodíaco y tengo el honor de entrar bajo el foco el primer día del verano, lo cual me convierte en un signo muy popular entre los que están a punto de irse de vacaciones.





The most famous thing in my constellation is probably the beehive or manger (Praesepe) cluster.
My brightest star is Acubens (the Claw) and the second brightest is Al Tarf (the Tip).

La cosa más famosa que hay en mi constelación es probablemente el cúmulo del nido de abejas o del pesebre. Mi estrella más brillante es Acubens (la Garra) y la segunda más brillante es Al Tarf (la Punta).

Hi! We´re the new sign of the mini zodiac. We´re the celestial twins Castor and Pollux. Pollux´s Greek name is Polydeukes, but the Roman name Pollux is shorter and easier. You would think we are identical, but there was one small but important difference. One of us was mortal and the other immortal, because our mother was mortal and our father immortal.

We were so close that we couldn´t take being separated by death. We asked our father, Zeus, the king of the gods, to let one of us be alive and the other dead on alternate days. But that didn´t work out because we couldn´t do anything together. So we made a second deal and got a place for ourselves among the stars. In exchange, we have to act as guides for sailors, who consider us their favorite demigods. You don´t know what a demigod is? It´s a minor god, like half a god. Instead of one of us being a full god, we´re both half gods. It´s not a bad deal. We´re happy enough up here together.

Estábamos tan unidos que no podíamos soportar que la muerte nos separase. Pedimos a nuestro padre, Zeus, rey de los dioses que permitiese que uno de nosotros estuviese vivo y el otro muerto en días alternos. Pero eso no funcionó porque no podíamos hacer nada juntos. Así que hicimos un segundo trato y nos conseguimos un lugar entre las estrellas. A cambio, teníamos que actuar como guías para los marineros, que nos consideran sus semidióses preferidos. ¿Qué no sabéis lo que es un semidiós? Es un dios menor, algo así como medio dios. En lugar de que uno de nosotros fuese un dios con todas las de la ley, los dos somos dioses menores. No es un mal negocio el que hicimos. Somos bastante felices los dos aquí arriba porque estamos juntos.

Aside from us, the other two children were girls. Nauta will probably tell you one day about our sisters Helen and Clytemnestra. So, you see, most people think we are twins, but we´re really cuadruplets.

In our constellation, there are two bright stars that light up our heads. Alpha Geminorum lights up Castor´s head and Beta Geminorum Pollux´s head.

Also in our constellation is the Eskimo Nebula, which is so called because people say that it looks like a face surrounded by an Eskimo hood. Other people call it the Clownface Nebula because they say it looks more like the face of a clown than like the face of an Eskimo. What do you think?

Taurus / Tauro

Hi. Time to change the sign of the zodiac. I´m Taurus, the bull. I´ll be here from April 21 to May 20. I´m up in the stars because I appear in several different myths, but the one I´m going to tell you about is my favorite. It is about how the continent of Europe got its name.

Hola. Es hora de cambiar el signo del zodiaco. Soy Tauro, el toro. Estaré aquí del 21 de abril al 20 de mayo. Tengo un lugar entre las estrellas porque aparezco en varios mitos distintos, pero el que os voy a contar es mi favorito. Es sobre cómo consiguió su nombre el continente europeo.

Zeus, the king of the gods (Mini Mythology VIII) fell in love with a Phoenician princess named Europa. He didn´t want to court her in Phoenicia, because he was afraid that she or her parents might not accept him as a suitor and that would be humiliating. So he decided to bring her to his own territory, where he felt more confident. He sent me to fetch her and it was my job to convince her to climb on my back and fly off with me to Crete, where Zeus would be awaiting her.

Zeus, el rey de los dioses, (Mini Mitología VIII) se enamoró de una princesa fenicia llamada Europa, pero no quiso cortejarla en su tierra porque temía que ella o sus padres no le aceptasen como pretendiente, lo cual sería humillante. Así que decidió traerla a su territorio, donde él se sentía más seguro de sí mismo. Me envió a por ella y mi labor consistió en convencerla para que se viniese volando conmigo a Creta, que era donde Zeus aguardaba.

I was a very good-looking bull and also very tame when I wanted to be, so Europa was pleasantly surprised when I appeared in a field where she was picnicing with her friends. We soon made friends and I told her why I had come and she made a bridle out of a garland of wild flowers so she could hold on to me better and climbed on my back and we flew off to Crete, where she was received by Zeus, who told her all the land she could see from where they stood would be hers if she agreed to be his mistress. The truth is she didn´t have much of a choice because it was very dangerous to say no to Zeus, so Europa made the best of things and accepted his offer. All the land she could see became hers and is what we call Europe today in her honour.

Yo era un toro muy guapo y también muy dócil cuando quería parecerlo, así que Europa se llevo una grata sorpresa cuando aparecí en un campo en el que ella estaba merendando con sus amigas. Pronto nos hicimos amigos. Yo le conté porque había venido y ella trenzó unas flores para hacer unas bridas con las que sujetarse a mi mejor y nos fuimos volando a Creta, donde Zeus la recibió y le dijo que toda la tierra que podía ver desde donde estaban sería suya si aceptaba ser su amante. La verdad es que ella no tenía realmente elección, porque decirle que no a Zeus era peligrosísimo. Así que Europa decidió conformarse y aceptar la oferta. Y toda la tierra que podía ver fue suya y es lo que hoy llamamos el continente europeo en su honor.
