Clothes Vocabulary / Vocabulario de Ropa

DON QUIJOTE

How would we look on a catwalk?
¿Qué tal quedaríamos en una pasarela?

SANCHO

While designers support anorexia, you better than I.

Let´s review the difference between wear and carry.

There are items you wear and items you carry.

For instance, you wear shoes but you carry a bag even if it is hanging from your shoulder.

Sentimental Ukelele / Ukelele la sentimental

It's an early summer night and we are sure to dream of the sea. For the little ones, here's both a bedtime story and a lullaby, all in one. You have the lyrics below, in English, and also a Spanish translation.

Far away, in a South Sea isle, lived a very pretty girl with a very pretty smile, and her name was Ukelele.

Ukelele and her mother and her daddy and her brother were as happy as they could be, in a little grass house with a little grass roof by the side of the beautiful sea.

And that little Ukelele had a little wooden dolly and she took her on the sand to play, with a rub-a-dub-dub in a pink shell tub she scrubbed her every day.

She fed her cookies that were made of sand. The little wooden dolly thought that they were grand.

What a lovely way for the day to pass, all around the house that was made of grass!

And when nightime came and supper was over, Ukelele took her little wooden dolly to bed with her and sang this little song:

When the stars come out at night, go to sleep my darling. Ukelele holds you tight, go to sleep my darling.

Ukelele and her mother and her daddy and her brother, they were sitting on the sand one day, when a beautiful ship coming home from a trip sailed into the beautiful bay.

Ukelele, Ukelele, I have brought you back a present. It's a beautiful brand new doll! See, her eyes are blue and her hair is real too and she's dressed for a fancy dress ball.

Ukelele, Ukelele, te he traído un regalo.

But don't feed her cookies that are made of sand. Those sandy cookies are a mess. And don't give her a scrub in your pink shell tub, that's likely to ruin her dress.

Oh, thank you, Mr. Captain! You´re a very lovely captain. It was nice of you to think of me. And I thank you for the doll, I will hang her on the wall for everyone to see.

And when nightime came, which doll do you think Ukulele took to bed with her? Why, of course, her own dear little wooden dolly and she sang:

When the stars come out at night, go to sleep my darling. Ukelele holds you tight, go to sleep my darling.

There is a lovely Little Golden Book about Ukelele.

Hay un libro dorado monísimo sobre Ukelele.

We found the video and the image of Ukelele on the Internet. The Spanish translation is by us. Maybe one day we'll produce one that can be sung.

Nauta

Arley's cat and my two felines want to teach you  sayings, saws, maxims and proverbs.

Gatokatcha

Don't look for three feet on a cat.
Unless it's me, of course.
This Spanish proverb means you mustn't look for trouble.

No busques tres pies al gato.
A no ser que sea yo, claro.
Esto significa que no debes buscar problemas.

Catullus / Catulo

A cat may look at a king.
This means that there are certain liberties one can take even with people who want you to think they are much more important than you are.

When the cat's away, the mice will play.
This means you have to watch people if you want them to behave.

Festina lente - Make haste slowly.
Now, there's a really old saw. I said on this blog that I said that saying. I said it a lot. And I'm saying it again.

Festina lente - Corre despacio.

Catullus / Catulo

What are you doing here? Are you a cat?

¿Qué haces aquí? ¿Eres un gato?

Augustus Caesar / Augusto César

No, I'm an expansionist.

No, soy expansionista.

Cato / Catón

He is a cat. That thing he has next to his calf looks like a mouse.

Gatokatcha

A mini prize for whoever knows what that is. 'Bye. More another day.

The Elm Grove / El Olmedo

Michael

Yes. Leprechauns are the fairy bankers but we only keep the money  of your ransom funds safe, we don't use these funds to try and make more money. So we don't know much about investments.

Arley

Since I know nothing about economics, I think I should consult an authority. But it can't be just anybody. All I have to do is say "blank check" to see somebody rubbing itchy hands.

Vinny / Vicentico

An authority? A housewife, then. Why don't you speak with the samaras of Temperance Elm Grove? The housewives manage all the financial affairs there and do it very well too. Nobody ever goes hungry there. They were able to control the carriers of the Dutch disease and have even had their home declared a protected area. Bernard is a great friend of a couple of them. He could take you there.

¿Autoridad?

Bernard / Bernardo

I'll gladly take you there. But on one condition. Your greedy friend mustn't come with us.

Arley

No problem. He's having his afternoon nap.

No hay problema. Está durmiendo la siesta.

The Elm Grove / El Olmedo

Walk right in, well-intentioned people.

Entrad, personas bienintencionadas.

Three Elmas / Tres Olmas Marujas

First of all, you have to know how much you have. If you want to do this honestly, you have to find out how much Dr. Freud charges for a visit. That is the sum you can invest in the school, if the Magi allow the change of purpose. You should speak to them first. And on no account must you invest at once. We have to analyze the investment in project and make sure it is profitable. And we must learn all we can about the people who will be handling your money before we trust them with it. Return when you know how much money you really can dispose of. And be very careful with the blank check. Too many people already know of its existence. It's in your name, isn't it? It's not made to be paid to the bearer? That would be very risky. But why do you want to do all this, anyway? We won't go to that school. No fairy will ever agree to go.

Estará a tu nombre, ¿no? No será al portador. Así podría cobrarlo cualquiera. Sería muy arriesgado. ¿Pero para que quieres hacer todo esto? Si no vamos a ir a la escuela esa. No habra hada que quiera ir.

Arley

Thank you so much, ladies. You've been most helpful. May I ask how you managed to make your grove a protected area?

The Elmas / Las Olmas Marujas

Helping others. The owner of this elm grove is Norwegian. His ancestors survived the 1812 crisis eating elm tree seeds. By the way, it's the bicentennial of that crisis.

Match / Partido

Fergus

Guess what I will be watching tonight.

Michael

Me too.

Y yo.

Gem

I know who is going to win. Want to make a bet?

Yo sé quién va a ganar. ¿Apuestas algo?

Dial M for Money / Llamada cara

Nobody leaves Toymaker Finbar's workshop without a fitting gift. And Arley has received a three footed cat.

Arley

Achoo!

¡Achis!

Alpin

I think that puss in spots my cousin gave you is giving you an allergy.

Arley

No. It was all that pollen at the Petal Fling. I know I shouldn't go to the woods in spring but I would miss so much fun.

Alpin

Fun? You're sneezing more than you are speaking and one of the trees blackened my eye with a branch. Gregoria, you´re a disaster as a bodyguardess. Where were you when I needed your help? You should have avenged me with an axe.

¿Cosas divertidas?

Gregoria

Toughen up or die.
Endurécete o muere.

Alpin

I just might give her to you for free, Arley. Now if this is New Moon Street, where is number 8? I don't see it anywhere. It´s bound to be invisible or some other cute trick like that. You'll be late for your appointment with the fortunetellers, Arley. And it won't be propitious again for another month.

Arley

There it is! There it is! It's where my cat is pointing at. The door has a horizontal eight, like the symbol for infinity.

Minafer! The querent and his friends are here. How punctual! Right on time. Oh, what a cute pussy cat. What's its name?

¡Minafer! Justo a tiempo. ¡Oh, qué gatito tan mono! ¿Cómo se llama?

Arley

Good morning, Mr. Worrywart. My cat's name is Gatokatcha.

Buenos días, Sr. Ansioso. Mi gato se llama Gatokatcha.

Gemaniah / Jemanías

Why, that's the name of an elephant. And it's such a small cat.

 Arley

Well, in might not be big, but it is a gato and a cat. And it's grey and it's vegetarian.

Alpin

Cut the small talk and let's get down to business before the stars move and aren't favorable once more. You won't make money if that happens. I bet that if I hadn't advised you guys to receive Arley because he had a blank check you wouldn't have wanted him for a client.

Happy morning, querent and company! Now if I remember right your question was how to get in touch with Dr. Freud. Well, the best way is to drop by his house. I'm sure he is very well known there.

Alpin

You made us come all the way here at a quarter to seven a.m.to tell us that? I thought you were going to conjure up Dr. Freud's spirit so he could speak to us through you. You're a medium, aren't you? Well, mediate. We've waited for more than a month to hear something that simple?

Bring! Ring! Brrriiiiing!

Alpin

Hey! Your phone has turned red and it's jumping. You should answer it before it bursts into flames.

¡Eh!

Minafer

I already have. I don't need to touch the phone to do that. Gem, can you guess who it is? It's the prime minister. Mr. Binky, you shouldn't be calling us. We told you it wasn't favorable.

Ya lo he hecho. Tengo una especie de manos libres. Gem, ¿adivinas quién es? Sr. Binky, no debería usted llamarnos.

Yes, we hear you perfectly. You believe you've had a great idea. You say that since we know everything beforehand and are part human, we're excellent candidates to be headmasters of your school. Well, it's not propitious for you, but it is for us, so it just might work. Mr. Binky, we accept. If you are willing to pay us, of course. What? You didn't expect that? No, we can't do it just for the prestige. We're only almost human. You're saying you don't know where you will find the money? You needn't worry. We'll take care of that. You see? We're already working for you. You can hang up without a care, we'll see to everything.

Minafer

Hey, kid. You're rich. Wouldn't you like to invest in education?

Eh, niño. Tú eres rico. ¿No te gustaría invertir en educación?

Arley

I? I've only got a ransom fund. I can only use it if I'm kidnapped.

¿Yo?

Gregoria

If I get tired of looking after the unchanged changeling, what are the chances I will find a job at your school?

Minafer

Arley, you have a blank check. Why not become a philantrophist? You'll be remembered as the benefactor who taught the ways of peace to the mortals and the fairies. Can you think of a better way of using your money?

Alpin

I can think of fifty to start with. Arley, you're such an idiot. Look at the mess you are in. If you had shared that check with me when I asked you to, you wouldn't have to choose now between your sanity and the welfare of two worlds. If you don't give them the money, everyone will say you are an egotist. And if you do, they'll rightly say you are mad.
