World Poetry Day / Día Mundial de la Poesía

Ode From Music and Moonlight / Oda de Música y Luz de Luna

We are the musicmakers, / Somos los creadores de la música,
And we are the dreamers of dreams, / Somos los soñadores de los sueños,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers, / Vagamos junto a los solitarios rompeolas,
And sitting by desolate streams; / Nos sentamos junto a manantiales desiertos,
World-losers and world-forsakers, / Perdedores y renegados del mundo,
On whom the pale moon gleams: / Sobre los que reluce la pálida luna,
Yet we are the movers and shakers / Aun así parece que siempre somos
Of the world forever, it seems. / Quienes sacuden y mueven el mundo.

With wonderful deathless ditties / Con maravillosas e inmortales canciones
We build up the world´s great cities, / Construimos las grandes ciudades
And out of a fabulous story / Y de un cuento fabuloso
We fashion an empire´s glory: / Fabricamos la gloria de un imperio.
One man with a dream, at pleasure, / Un hombre con un sueño, a su antojo,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown: / Se lanza a la conquista de una corona,
And three with a new song´s measure / Y tres al ritmo de una canción nueva
Can trample an empire down. / A pisotones pueden cargarse un imperio.

We, in the ages lying / Nosotros, yaciendo por los siglos
In the buried past of the earth, / En el pasado enterrado de la tierra,
Built Nineveh with our sighing, / Construimos Nínive con nuestros suspiros
And Babel itself with our mirth; / E incluso Babel con nuestra alegría
And overthrew them prophesying / Y las derrotamos con nuestras profecías,
To the old of the new world´s worth; / Cantándole al viejo mundo sobre el valor del nuevo,
For each age is a dream that is dying, / Porque cada edad es un sueño que muere,
Or one that is coming to birth. / O uno que está naciendo.

Michael

No, Alpin. This poem wasn´t written by mean, spiteful and selfish, childhating Willy Wonka. He only quoted a part of it to explain that he had invented snozberries.

No, Alpin.

Alpin

I´ve never had a single tiny, little, teeny-weeny, wee snozberry! It´s unfair! I don´t even know what they taste like! I want to eat up all the snozberries! Every last one! But I don´t want to go anywhere near that murderous factory. You go!

¡Nunca he probado ni una sóla esnozbaya díminuta-canija-enana! ¡Es injusto! Ni siquiera sé como saben. ¡Quiero comerme todas las esnozbayas! ¡Hasta la última! Pero no quiero acercarme a esa fábrica asesina. ¡Ve tú!

Michael

Heaven help Willy Wonka should you ever decide to light on his factory. Tough character though he is.
There´s a very interesting comment on Roald Dahl´s "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" here, and you can read the whole ode too.

Aries / Aries

Hi. I´m Aries the Ram. I´m the first sign of the zodiac, but somebody on this blog decided to start this year with Aquarius. Still, I´m not sore about that.

Hola.

I´m a rather special ram not only because I can fly but also because my fleece is golden.

The kids riding on my back are Helle and Phrixus. They had serious problems back home and I was sent to carry them off to a place where they would be safer.

In the picture I´m flying over the sea. Little Helle slipped off my back at this spot and we couldn´t pull her out of the water so she had to stay there with the sea nymphs. After that happened, people began to call this part of the sea the Hellespont.

As for Phrixus, I carried him all the way to Colchis, which is in Asia, where he married the king´s daughter. Since he´d had to leave home in a rush, he didn´t have a thing to offer his father-in-law as a gift except the wool from my back. I agreed to give him my fleece in exchange for a place among the satrs.

King Aeëtes hung my fleece on a tree in the middle of a sacred forest and had an enormous dragon coil around the tree to protect it. He also let wild bulls loose in the fields around the forest for extra protection.

As for me, I got to dwell forever among the stars, but my constellation doesn´t shine very much because I left my glimmering golden fleece in Colchis.

The drawing below shows the stars in my constellation. My head is made up of four stars that are called Aluathay or Salhay. It´s easier to remember Salhay if you know Spanish because it sounds like you are saying "There is salt."

Nauta´s Mini Mythology: Pan and Syrinx / Mini Mitología de Nauta: Pan y Syringa

Nauta

I know I´ve taken longer than usual to show up to tell you a mini myth this month. But the fellow I´m going to tell you about today is a little difficult to find.

You have to stay for a while all by yourself in an open field. And then, if he´s there, he doesn´t quite show up like others would. He hides and observes you and makes disturbing little noises that make you think someone might be there besides you.

If you don´t get scared and leave, he might play his flute a little. You won´t know where the music comes from. And if that doesn´t scare you off, he might show himself.

The sight of him can provoke a panic attack in some people. They run away and suffer from agrophobia the rest of their lives. But if you´re brave and you hold your ground, then he smiles and greets you amicably.

Pan is the god of fields and shepherds and their flocks. But he is also the god of those strange fears people suffer from when they find themselves alone and feel exposed and unprotected.

He can be friendly, but he is not always nice. He has been known to do more than frighten people, even out of their wits. But I´m not going to say more about that.

The young lady who is hiding among the reeds in the river is Syrinx. She isn´t hiding from me or from you. She´s hiding from Pan. He fell in love with her but she didn´t like him as much as he would have liked her to.

Unfortunately, Pan is one of those troubled and troublesome people who can´t take no for an answer. He kept chasing Syrinx everywhere until she got so fed up with that she decided to hide forever in a river where some of her friends, river nymphs, lived.

Sometimes you can catch a glimpse of her among the reeds, but she hides so well that most people believe she has turned into the reeds themselves.

Can you see the musical instrument that Pan is holding? It is called a syrinx because its pipes are reeds. Pan loves tp play the syrinx because it reminds him of the sweetheart he searches for but can´t find among the reeds. He practices so much out in the fields that he has become quite a good musician.

They say Pan´s mother suffered the first panic attack ever when Pan was born and she saw what her baby looked like.

People who suffer panic attacks often feel like they are about to die from a heart attack. But the thing about a panic attack is that in most cases when you have one you don´t really have anything important to be scared about. It´s all in your imagination. So the best thing to do is try to remain calm and not lose control. That´s why when Pan tries to scare you out in the fields, he ends up accepting you if he sees he hasn´t succeeded in frightening you.

Mr. Eddy IV - Love, Work and Death / Amor Trabajo y Muerte

Mr. Eddy: I began to write prose. I wrote some stories I managed to sell and even a drama. I landed a job as assitant editor of a periodical, lost it, and gained it back again. After that I worked for other periodicals. I acquired quite a reputation for being a fearless critic. I always spoke my mind. That won me enemies. / Comencé a escribir prosa. Hice enemigos.

Sancho Panza: You are famous for your tales of mystery and imagination. Which of your stories would you say was the most successful?
Mr. Eddy: If you mean which story I made the most money with, that would be"The Golden Bug," possibly the first detective story to be written. It involved cryptography, which people found very interesting in my time. I myself was an excellent cryptographer. People would challenge me, sending cryptograms to the periodicals I worked for and I would decipher them.

Sancho Panza: You wrote a novel too, but it wasn´t very sucessful.

Mr. Eddy: No, it wasn´t. People said it was too gruesome. "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" was about the adventures of a sailor and it did influence Herman Melville and Jules Verne and others who later wrote about voyages and the sea.

Don Quijote: Personally, I think the best of your works are your poems. I really admire the ones about beautiful women who die young, like your mother Elizabeth and your stepmother Frances Allan. But the most important woman in your life was probably your wife, Virginia Clemm. Would you tell us about her?

Mr. Eddy: That´s the only picture there is of her. It was done on her deathbed. I suddenly realized I had no likeness of her for others to remember her by. I was never going to forget what she was like. She was my first cousin. She was only thirteen when I married her in secret. A year after we married a second time. This wedding took place in Richmond, and this time we were married in public. She was already ill when we married. Like my mother, she was consumptive. I knew I was going to lose her. But I didn´t know when. It was sheer torture.

Don Quijote: Your most famous poem is "The Raven." It is about a man who is about to lose his mind because the woman he loves has died. He is haunted by a raven who repeats the word "Nevermore." And he knows he will never see his beloved again, or probably ever be happy again. Were you thinking of Virginia when you wrote it?

Mr. Eddy: I lost her two years after I published it. She died in a little cottage we had rented in New York. It´s a museum now. People who remember us visit it.

I wrote other poems about star-crossed lovers: "Lenore," "Ulalume,""Annabel Lee." The last is about two young people who are so deeply, happily in love that even the angels in heaven envy them. A cold wind kills Annabel and she is buried by her highborn kinsmen in a sepulchre by the sea. Her lover spends his nights sleeping by it, dreaming of her, united with her even if only in his own mind. I spent a few chilling nights next to Virginia´s grave.

Don Quijote: We read that poem in class and we heard a song by Radio Futura based on it.
Your work has certainly influenced a lot of very different artists. That proves it is good.

Sancho Panza: All those women had the letter "l" in their names, didn´t they? Lenore, Ligeia, Eulalie, Ulalume, Annabel Lee... Is that only a coincidence? Lenore, Ligeia, Eulalie, Ulalume, Annabel Lee... ¿Es sólo coincidencia?

Mr. Eddy: Let´s change the subject. I was planning to publish my own journal. / Cambiemos de tema. Yo tenía pensado publicar mi propio diario.
Sancho Panza: What became of that? / ¿Qué fue de eso?
Mr. Eddy: I died before I could do that. I was buried in one place and then transferred to a better one, that is better in the sense that people who want to visit my grave can find it more easily.

Don Quijote: Your death is one of the most mysterious in the history of literature. If it´s not indiscreet of us, we´d love to hear exactly what happened.

Mr. Eddy: I was found delirious in the streets of Baltimore. The clothes I was wearing weren´t mine. They didn´t fit me at all. I think some people from a tavern recognised me and I was taken lying on a plank to a hospital, where I died after a few days.

You´ve probably heard rumors that I drank a lot. Some people say I was an alcoholic. Others say I was a dipsomaniac. The difference between both is that alcoholics are always drinking while dipsomaniacs only drink on certain occasions but lose all control. Often, they cannot remember why they drank or what happened after that. But I hadn´t touched a drop of alcohol for months before my death and doctors know that I certainly didn´t die from delirium tremens. Alcohol was not the cause of my death.

Sancho Panza: I have heard it suggested that you were kidnapped by politicians. It was election day and they were dragging men from poll to poll forcing them to vote fraudulently several times for the candidate they favored. This practice is called cooping.

Mr. Eddy: I was too well known to be employed in that way. That had nothing to do with my death.

Don Quijote: Was it a cerebral tumour, then? That has also been suggested. / ¿Entonces fue un tumor cerebral? Eso también se ha sugerido.

Mr. Eddy: It was because I had just been to Richmond, where I had met with my childhood sweetheart, Sarah Elmira Royster. She was a widow, I was a widower. We were both free to marry again. And we agreed to do so. Y acordamos hacerlo.

Reynolds: But you were not free. Nor would you be free evermore. You thought you could forget the girl you married in Richmond? You swore before the bust of Pallas that when she died you would never be happy again. Never again to be happy. Nevermore.

Mr. Eddy: I died from rabies. The raven killed me. / Fallecí de la rabia. El cuervo me mató.
Sancho Panza: The raven bit you? But ravens don´t transmit rabies. It´s unheard of. / Pero los cuervos no transmiten la rabia. Eso no se ha oído nunca.

Reynolds: If there´s something I hate, it´s how some authors spoil the ending of a good story. I couldn´t allow Eddy to spoil the ending of his life´s story. Isn´t this ending a much better one than "they lived happily ever after?" No, ravens don´t transmit rabies. But I have friends and family.

Bats: Good evening, Godfather Reynaldi! Is there anything we can do for you? Or is everything going well? / Buenas noches, padrino Reynaldi. ¿Hay algo que podamos hacer por ti? ¿O tutto va bene?

Mr. Eddy III - Early Years / Primeros Años

Don Quijote: The first question is obvious. Tell us where and when you were born, about your childhood...

Mr. Eddy: I was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. My parents, Elizabeth and David, were actors. I had an elder brother and a younger sister. My father abandoned us when I was a year old and my mother died soon after of consumption.

Don Quijote: Your mother was the first of the women you loved and lost, wasn´t she?

Mr. Eddy: That´s right. Perhaps that´s why I later wrote so much about beautiful women who die. But first I want to tell you about the Allan family. What was left of my family split up after my mother´s death. Each of us children went to live with a different family. I was taken in by a wealthy merchant named John Allan. / Cierto.

We lived in Richmond, Virginia. He never really adopted me, but he gave me my middle name. That´s why I´m Edgar Allan Poe. The Allan family moved to England in 1815. I went with them. I went to school for a time both in Scotland and England. We were in Britain for about five years and then we returned to Richmond, where Mr. Allan inherited a fortune from an uncle who was one of the wealthiest men in Virginia.
Don Quijote: Were you already interested in the supernatural when you were a boy?
Mr. Eddy: One time I wrapped myself up in a sheet and gave Mr. Allan and his friends a fright while they were gambling. They took me for a real ghost. I suppose I´ve always had a gift for frightening people.
Sancho Panza: When you were back in Richmond you enrolled at the University of Virginia, didn´t you?

Mr. Eddy: Yes. To study languages. / Sí, para estudiar idiomas.
Sancho Panza: It was full of spoiled rich kids, wasn´t it? / Estaba llena de niñatos ricos y malcriados, ¿no?

Mr. Eddy: Well, young men sow a lot of wild oats. Mr. Allan didn´t give me as much money as some of my schoolmates got from their parents, but I wanted to have the same things they did. It´s only natural when you´re a teenager to want to be like the rest. I soon had a lot of gambling debts and Mr. Allan didn´t want to pay them. I fought with Mr. Allan and found myself on my own.

Don Quijote: About this time you also lost another woman you loved, I think.

Mr. Eddy: Sarah Elmira Royster. Her family didn´t approve of me. They thought I wasn´t good enough for her. Her father must have destroyed my letters to her or something of the kind because she married another man. / Sarah Elmira Royster.

Sancho Panza: To support yourself, you joined the army. / Para mantenerse, se alistó en el ejército.

Mr. Eddy: First I tried to earn a living working as a clerk and as a newspaper writer. But I earned so little that yes, I decided to join the army. I was only 18, but I lied and they accepted me. I rose to sargeant-major. That was as high as I could get on my own, so I appealed to Mr. Allan who agreed to send me to West Point. Me ascendieron a sargento mayor.

Sancho Panza: Westpoint is the famous American military academy. / Westpoint es la famosa academia militar norteamericana.
Mr. Eddy: I didn´t get to graduate. I fought with Mr. Allan again over money and other things. I knew I would have to leave West Point because I was broke, so I decided to do it dramatically by getting myself courtmartialled and expelled. / No llegué a graduarme.

Sancho Panza: But you made friends there. / Pero hizo amigos allí.

Mr. Eddy: My fellow cadets each contributed 75 cents to help me publish a book of my poems.
Sancho Panza: And then you became the first known American to try and earn a living only by writing.

Sancho´s Notes on Adjectives I / Los apuntes de Sancho sobre adjetivos I

Michael says the big mistake we the Spanish make with adjectives is to try and pluralize them. We add an "s" to an adjective when it modifies a noun that is in the plural. We say "blues eyes" instead of "blue eyes," which is the correct form. You must never add an "s" to an adjective. Never. Never! Never! Never ever! Never, never, never! And never means never.

Nunca. ¡Nunca! ¡Nunca! ¡Nunca jamás! ¡Nunca, nunca, nunca! Y nunca significa jamás.

I´m listening to a song that can help me remember this rule. It´s called "Human," and it´s by The Killers.

This song is special because when people first heard it, they didn´t know what it was about. The singer asked a strange question: "Are you human or are you dancer?" That sounds specially strange in English because people thought the singer shouldn´t have said "dancer." He should have said "a dancer" or "dancers."

Some people thought the singer wasn´t saying dancer. They thought he was saying "denser." Dense is an adjective that can mean stupid in English. They thought the singer was asking people if they were more stupid than humans ought to be.

The Killers had to explain what their song was about. It turned out that they were using "dancer" as an adjective, and that´s why the word didn´t have an "s."

Their song was about being really human and thinking for yourself. Or, instead, just doing what others did without thinking. They said people who didn´t think for themselves weren´t human. They were "dancer." It was as if they were just dancing, following the beat without really existing. Like puppets attached to cords. Just as "human" can be an adjective, they felt "dancer" could be an adjective too.

Listen to the song at the address below and remember that The Killers are right, you must never add an "s" to an adjective! ¿Or are you denser?

Sweet Violets / Dulces Violetas

They´re here too, since the last days of February, the sweet violets.

They look blue in these pictures but they are really intensely purple when you´re up close.

I visited the almondtree field too, and the trees were all in full bloom too.

And you know what else ? I found another shoe. But no, it isn´t mine. So, is it yours?
¿Y sabes qué más? Encontré otro zapato. Pero no, no es mío. ¿Acaso es tuyo?

I´m not having much luck finding my lost shoe, but at least I know where to find violet candy.
At this typically Spanish candy store.
