Molt ben fet

Bull

Being humanitarian is not being antispanish. What´s well done is well done wherever it´s been done. We´ve never understood why no less than a symbol of our country still has to be ancestrally destroyed before a cheering crowd. If you love bulls, don´t hurt them.

Horse

We horses are grateful too because we have a part in this.

Fox

I understand you perfectly. Although I am protected in England, there are still people who think it is a question of national identity to murder me brutally.

Somewhere in the Pacific / En algún lugar del Pacífico

Michael

Here I am, exactly where I want to be, lost somewhere in the Pacific, far from the madding crowd, from spells and hexes, from stressful situations and annoying people - need I say more? - enjoying myself immensely and celebrating my birthday in the company of dolphins and other sea creatures. I hope you are on holiday too and having as good a time as I am.

Alpin, Curmudgeon and Arley

Hi, Michael!

¡Hola, Michael!

Third birthday / Tercer cumpleaños

Child of the Owl and the Pussycat / Cría del Búho y la Gatita

Anne says this whimsical creature whose elegant picture we found on the Internet should be called "Meowl" or "Pussyhoot."
And did you know that a runcible spoon is the offspring of a spoon and a fork as can be seen in the picture below which we also found on Images from the Internet? A runcible spoon is also called a "spork."

The Owl and the Pussycat / El búho y la gatita

Edward Lear

High time something runcible was featured on this blog.

I

¡Visible!
¡Visible!
¡A la luz de la luna visible!

Below you can watch a video of this English song.

Curmudgeon / Cascarrabias

Mmmmm. Mmmmmm.

Mum! The kidnapper keeps staring at me with a weird look in his beady eyes. And now he´s making strange noises!

Aislene

Mr. Finn is no longer a kidnapper, Alpin. I asked him to please look after you because your sisters want to spend the summer in their houses in Avalon. Think of him as your very own personal bodyguard.

Alpin

Does that mean he is going to beat up those who mess with me?

Aislene

I don´t think that will be necessary. You try not to get into any trouble, sweetie. Mummy has lots to do.

Arley

Thanks for inviting me to swim in your pool, Alpin. It´s so fun.

Alpin

No, it´s not. Not now that a kidnapper has sneaked into it. We have to get away from him, Arley. We´ll dive deep under and escape through the drain.

Arley

Where will the drain take us?

¿Dónde nos llevará el desagüe?

Visit your local library and bookstores this summer. There are lots of interesting things. For example, if you want to know what English grandparents did when they were kids to entertain themselves, look out for these books:

There is both an English and a Spanish version of the first book. I haven´t found the second in Spanish. Although one is supposed to be for boys and another for girls, today we can all enjoy both. You only have to know how to read.

Halo-halo / Jalo-jalo

In filipino, “halo” means “mix” and therefore the name of the recipe in this post would be “mix-mix” in English. This Filipino treat is easy to prepare and good to have on a hot day. Some of the ingredients of an authentic halo-halo may be hard to find in Spain, although they can sometimes be found in glass bottles in Chinese supermarkets. But among the ingredients that are easier to find are custard, crème caramel, bits of mango, melon balls, cherries, sweet red beans and chickpeas, sugared fruit, caramelized rice or rice crispies, bits of fruit-flavored gelatin or some of those soft, gummy candies kids eat.

The first thing you need is a small bowl or glass fluted cup. You have to put a spoonful or a teaspoonful of the ingredients listed above. You must also keep adding shaved ice to the mix. Next add condensed and evaporated milk. You can also add coconut milk. To top it all, a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The purple ice cream in some of the photos isn´t made of violets. It´s purple yam ice cream, delicious and colourful and we might publish how it is made one of these days because it can be made at home.

Above, different versions of halo-halo, sometimes the ingredients are set on a table and diners can serve themselves.

Cashew Nut Legend / La leyenda del anacardo

Leafy Frankie /Curro Hojita

Leafies know a lot about plants and we can change them in different ways. Today, we´re going to tell you the legend of a plant that was changed by a fairy, the cashew.
But, to prove you understand the story, fill in the blanks using these words:
blinded, cloistered, grove, knock it off, lightning, noises, quarrelled, scared, shade, shapes, sigh, sooner.

One day a fairy was strolling lazily through a (1)________. At that moment she had nothing much to do except enjoy the early morning sunshine. She heard a soft little sigh that made her pause and ask herself where it came from. A second little (2)________told her that it came from inside a small red apple-like fruit growing on a cashew tree. “Why are you sighing?” the fairy asked the fruit. “Are you a worm stuck inside? How did you get in? I don´t see a hole.” “I´m not a worm. I´m a seed. And, yes, I´m stuck in here and I can´t see a thing and have no idea what is going on outside. I know there is an outside because I can hear (3)________. And now you. I would really like to see you and what it is like out there.” The fairy said fine, she could do that for the seed. And out popped the seed into the sunlight. It was (4)________for a second by the light but soon it was able to enjoy the colors and the (5)________all about. “Are you happy now?” asked the fairy. The fruit said yes, very, and thanked the fairy who left as satisfied with herself as the seed was with the change. The morning went well. It was a little hot at noon, but the seed was able to spend the afternoon in the (6)________. At twilight, however, the clouds gathered and as often happens when they do, they (7)________ and began a storm. The seed was badly frightened by the thunder and the (8)________and fearful that the wind and the raindrops would (9)________the apple to which it was still attached. At dawn, the fairy again visited the grove and checked on the seed to see how it was doing. “I´m not sure,” said the seed. “Maybe I was better off inside the apple. I was so (10)________I might fall to the ground during the storm last night.” “You eventually will fall anyway,” said the fairy. “(11)________or later you will be buried in the ground. I can´t change that. The question is if you want to spend your time up there inside or outside the apple.” The seed decided outside and that is why cashew seeds grow unlike the seeds of other fruits, which prefer to live (12)________.

Y ahora te oigo a ti.

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojita
Below you can see what cashew nuts look like in your supermarket. They´re very healthy, so it´s a good idea to have some for a snack.

The Twicherries / Las Biguindas

Aislene

What is that whispering that doesn´t let me have my siesta? Something strange is going on in my garden again.

Leafy Frankie / Curro Hojita

Heh, heh.

Jé, jé.

Twicherries / Biguindas

Hi. We´re the Twicherries.

Hola, somos las biguindas.

Aislene

And what is that?

¿Y eso qué es?

Twicherries / Biguindas

We're Siamese cherries that can talk and love to chat, chat, chatter.

Aislene

So now I have to eat mutant cherries?

Twicherries / Biguindas

We'd rather you ate something else. We're good company. We could be friends.

Preferiríamos que comieses otra cosa. Somos buena compañía. Podríamos ser amigas.

Aislene

Oh…I was thinking of baking a cherry pie for dinner…but I guess not.

Fergus

Hey there, Aislene! Is Ernest at home? Thanks to some infernal gatchkas called vuvuzelas, we´ve learned that the mortals are having a football championship and we want to watch the big match on Alpin´s tv set.

¡Eh, hola, Aislene!

Ernesto

There is football on mortal TV?

¿Hay fútbol en la tele mortal?

Niall, the Grey Man / Nial, el Hombre Gris

Yep, of the best in the mortal world. But nobody plays as well as the Sidhe Bang F.C., of course.

Alpin

I want a T-shirt of the Spanish team! But only if it wins. If it doesn´t win the world cup, I don´t want the T-shirt at all. Oh, and you can´t watch the match on my telly. Curmudgeon is watching “The Miracle Worker.” Before he left on his summer holiday, Michael gave Curmudgeon a paper saying he has to watch the film until September. He will be watching it all summer, so tough luck to you, unks.

Fergus

Michael went off leaving Curmudgeon plugged to your TV set? But he´s been watching that film for months without fathoming it. It´s clear that system doesn´t work with Finn. If he spends the summer doing what he´s been doing all the while, he still won´t learn a thing. I can´t understand why Michael didn´t let St. Patrick work a miracle.

Alpin

We wouldn´t be on the Guinness Book of Records then.

Entonces no estaríamos en el libro Guinness.

Fergus

Well, he´s become a lot more famous by not allowing the miracle to happen than he would have if it had.

Alpin

Sure, but he says he doesn´t mind because this has made him look like an infamous teacher and now nobody will want to be taught by him.

Ernesto

Well, since Michael now has what he wants, listen, Finn, surely you would rather watch the game with my brothers and me. That film is beyond doubt wonderful but it´s old hat to you. Let´s turn off the DVD.

Curmudgeon

Certainly not. I have to watch the film.

Ni hablar. Yo tengo que vigilar la película.

Fergus

You can´t be serious.

No lo dirás en serio.

Curmudgeon

Don't try to distract me with your idle prattle. I'm not taking my eyes off the screen.

No intentes distraerme con tu ociosa charla. No pienso quitar ojo a la pantalla.

Niall, The Grey Man / Nial, el Hombre Gris

That's enough nonsense now! I've had it! This ends here and now!

¡Ya está bien de tonterías! ¡Ya me he hartado! ¡Esto se acaba aquí y ahora!

Fog / Niebla

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojita

What happened?

¿Qué ha pasado?

Leafy Frankie / Curro Hojita

Old Foggy extended his cloak, we couln´t see a thing and -

Curmudgeon / Cascarrabias

Someone has stolen the DVD! You´re all under arrest! Hold it right there! Don´t anybody move!

¡Alguien ha robado el DVD! ¡Quedáis detenidos! ¡Alto ahí! ¡Qué no se mueva nadie!

Aislene

Listen to me, please, Mr. Finn. Don´t take it that way. It makes no sense for you to quarrel with my husband and my brothers-in-law. Remember that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Why don´t you go to the pool with my son Alpin? If you like to watch things, you can watch over Alpin. You could do me a huge favor and look after him all summer. Don´t take your eyes off him and don´t you worry. I´ll explain everything to Michael when he returns.
