Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Midas / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Midas

Nauta
Have you ever heard it said of someone that he or she is richer than Midas? Or that a certain person has the golden touch? Before we say goodbye to January I would like to tell you about Midas, king of Phrygia.

Midas, Zoe Marygold and the barber / Midas, Zoe Caléndula  y el barbero

The Phrygians couldn’t agree on who should be their king so they decided to crown the first man to show up in a wagon. And that was Midas, and this how he got to be king.

Midas was an extravagant fellow who liked to have the best of everything. When the god Dionysus, grateful for a favor Midas had done him, offered to grant him a wish, Midas said he wanted everything that he touched to turn into gold.

This was not a wise wish, as Midas found out as soon as he tried to have dinner and his food became inedible solid gold. Worse yet, when his daughter Zoe Marygold sneaked up behind him to give him a good night kiss, she turned into a gold statue. Midas had no choice but to ask Dionysus to take back this fatal gift.

Once things were back to normal, Midas, who had always loved plants and flowers and whose rose gardens were justly famous, decided to change his lifestyle. He spend most of his time roaming the countryside enjoying the best things in life that are free and made fast friends with the rural god Pan.

Midas admired Pan so much that when Pan competed with Phoebus Apollo to determine which of the two gods was the better musician, Midas praised Pan´s rustic flute over Apollo’s more sophisticated lyre. Apollo was so angry that he changed Midas’ ears into those of an ass.

Midas hid his disfigured ears under a Phrygian cap. Only his barber, sworn to secrecy, knew about the ears. The poor man did his best not to gossip, but the urge to tell someone was so great that one day he went to an isolated spot and dug a hole in the ground and whispered into the earth that King Midas had the ears of an ass. He covered up the hole and left much relieved, thinking no one would find out.

But some reeds grew where he had buried the secret and whenever the wind blew they would sing, “King Midas has the ears of an ass!” Of course, everyone soon found out. And now I will say goodbye to January and to you. I hope to see you soon again.

Espero volver a veros pronto.

I added the bit about Midas´ daughter getting changed into a statue to the original myth, didn´t I?

The Gift Certificate / El Vale Regalo

Alpin

...plus I also want you to know the newfangled pink sugar coal may be great for naughty Barbies but is not my ideal gift, though I got tons of it. And last but not least, I want to inform you in good time that my New Year´s resolution is to ask for far more things in 2011 than I did in 2010. Be prepared.

Estad preparados.

The Magi

Give us a break, kid. We´re dying to get home and hit the sack. You may think we´ve distributed less gifts this year, but it´s twice as tough to find gifts when times are hard.

Fuk, Luk and Sau

Hi!

¡Hola!

Alpin

Hey! Who are those guys? Can I ask them for gifts?

¡Eh! ¿Quiénes son esos? ¿Puedo pedirles regalos?

Michael

Those talking statues are of the gods Fuk, Luk and Sau. Your sisters gave them to me for Christmas with a gift certificate so I can consult certain Master Decorators who will help me decorate my Apple Island House the Feng Shui way.

Branna

You can ask Fuk, Luk and Sau for blessings, prosperity and longevity.

Puedes pedir bendiciones, prosperidad y longevidad a Fuk, Luk y Sau.

Fiona

Michael always says he is going to furnish his Apple Island house but he never does. That´s why we´ve given him the gift certificate. When are you going to use it?

Michael

As soon as I can.

En cuanto pueda.
