John Lackland / Juan Sin Tierra

English and Constitutionalism / El Inglés y el Constitucionalismo

III – JOHN, THE KING WHO LACKED MORE THAN LAND / JUAN, EL REY AL QUE LE FALTABA ALGO MÁS QUE TIERRA

Yes, we had heard of John Lackland before. He is the evil king in the legend of Robin Hood, and together with the Sheriff of Nottingham, one of the most notorious bad guys in English literature. He is also one of the worst villains in English history.

John was not only at odds with the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest. He had problems with the poor, with the rich, with his relatives, with his French and Scottish neighbors and with the Church. Among others.

Here is an incomplete list of things we have heard he did to infuriate others. He betrayed his father and his brother and murdered his nephew. He emptied the coffers of the nation and raised taxes to unprecedented levels because he was forever at war with the French and failing to beat them. He abused the plebeians in all the usual ways but to a degree worse than usual. He cut off the aristocracy doing things like starving to death the relatives of those who would not give him money or trying to seduce their daughters. He was excommunicated by the church for refusing to recognize the Archbishop of Canterbury. And this is not the half of it.

It was no wonder John’s barons decided to rebel against him. But because there was no one living who could rightfully claim the throne of England and lead a revolt against John, the barons could not substitute him. Instead, they decided to force him to sign a document that would guarantee the liberties of the realm.

After a lot of fierce and bitter fighting, the king and the rebel barons met to negotiate in June 1215 at Runnymede Meadow, a site close to London, for the city had become the center of a huge nationwide rebellion that extended even to Wales. On the 19th of June, John finally signed the Great Charter prepared by the barons. This document, known as the Magna Carta Libertatum, has 63 chapters, the most important of which is probably chapter 40, which says that neither right nor justice will be sold, denied or delayed to anyone.

Chapters 52 and 61 are also very significant because they tried to ensure that the king would behave as he had promised by authorizing a committee of twenty-five barons to intervene if he deprived anyone of his lands, castles, liberties or rights. This committee was literally entitled to “distress” John any way it could, especially by taking the king’s lands, castles and possessions from him. In this manner, the divine right of kings to always have the last word came to an end.

As was to be expected, John did not keep his word and fighting broke out once more between the king and his people. This time the kings of Scotland and France participated in the fray with a view to substituting John themselves. Fortunately for everyone, John died on the 18th of October of 1216. Well, fortunately for everyone save the inhabitants of hell, said many people, for John had surely made it an even worse place upon entering there.

As for the Magna Carta, many copies were made of it, but only four of the original copies survive today. One of the copies belongs today to the British Library but was found in Dover Castle, a second copy is in Lincoln Castle, a third in Salisbury Cathedral and a fourth in the Houses of Parliament. These copies have been granted the status of Memory of the World by the Unesco and are listed in the Memory of the World Register. They have become talismans of liberty.

Alfred the Great / Alfredo el Grande

English and Constitutionalism / El Inglés y el Constitucionalismo

II – ALFRED, THE KING WHO WAS GOOD FOR SOMETHING / ALFREDO, EL REY QUE SIRVIÓ PARA ALGO

The first thing we learned about the subject we are dealing with is that there are two kings in English history who are specially linked to constitutionalism.

First was Alfred the Great, a king liked and admired by many English people. He is the only English king still called "the great" today.

Alfred styled himself king of the Anglo-Saxons, and he is famous for having defended the Saxon kingdoms that then existed in England against the Danish Vikings, who were invading the country and trying to take it for their own.

A story is told about this king that tells us that he was not a tyrant.

Early in 878, Alfred had been forced to flee from his enemies who were taking all the Saxon kingdoms. He was forced to hide in the home of a swineherd named Denewulf.

Alfred was there incognito, and Denewulf’s wife had no idea who her guest was. She was not very happy about having to feed and look after her husband’s friend. Alfred was understandably depressed, and he did nothing but sit by the fire all day and brood on his ill fortune, so she thought he was nothing more than a lazy parasite with a lot of cheek.

One day the housewife decided he had to be good for something and since he was sitting by the fire she told him to at least mind some cakes that she was baking over it.

Alfred said he would keep an eye on them but his mind wandered back to his own troubles and the cakes were burned.

The swineherd’s wife lost her patience with the king and told him off.

But Alfred didn’t take offence. He told the good wife she was right to be angry because he was being useless. He reacted, and from that moment began to take action. By May of that same year he had rallied the Saxons and routed the Danish Vikings.

Alfred has to do with constitutionalism because he was a king who thought a monarch had to be useful and serve his people instead of the opposite.

Also, he tried to reform the legal system so that it would be more just than it was. He prepared a domboc, a code of laws in which he compiled many of the rules and regulations that were applied back then in England, removing those he thought wrong and adding some new ones.

He made it compulsory for judges to be people who could read and write so that they would hopefully be a little less ignorant than some of them were.

He implanted trial by jury, which meant that nobody could be punished for his or her behavior unless twelve supposedly impartial men who had sworn to be just agreed that this person was really at fault. This offered more guarantees than simply being condemned by the local leader.

Nor did Alfred use religion cynically to control his subjects. He seems to have genuinely believed in doing good and helping others, for which many Christians consider him a saint and he can still today be found in the colored glass windows of many English churches.

The writer Charles Dickens, who is also celebrating his 200th birthday this year, said in his “A Child’s History of England,” that Alfred’s spirit inspired some of the best English laws.

Our next post will be about another kind of king, John Lackland.

English and Constitutionalism / El Inglés y el Constitucionalismo

I – INTRODUCTION / INTRODUCCIÓN

Constitutionalism seeks to protect the freedom of the individual from the arbitrary authority of the despot. Constitutionalism is a universal movement in the sense that this protection has been sought for in all parts of the world at one time or another. Because of the bicentenary of the Spanish Constitution of 1812, fondly nicknamed “the Josie,” because it became effective on St. Joseph’s day, March 19, 1812, the students of 4C are doing research for English class on the ways in which the struggle against the abuse of power in the Anglo-Saxon world developed and on how what occurs in one nation can influence what later happens in others. We will publish what we find in a booklet that will be our contribution to a treasure chest full of icons of the Pepa (the Josie) that is being prepared by our Reading Plan.

We shall start by telling what we have learned about how the different attitudes of two English kings affected constitutionalism. We will do this in two posts, one about Alfred the Great and another about John Lackland.

Nauta

Have you ever bathed in dew, rolling in the grass at morn? This is a very tiny post, but, I hope, lovely. Last month when we celebrated dawn, we forgot to mention a delicate little goddess. Her name is Ersa, and she is the goddess of the dew.

Ersa

Demanding Justice / Exigir justicia

Here is a text that shows that sometimes the unjust demand justice more than anyone else.

I - English version of : THE UNJUST DEMAND JUSTICE THE MOST

It was four o´clock in the morning. Policeman Black was hiding in his car behind two trees next to a divided highway. He was waiting to see if some reckless drivers he had been told about would show up. And they sure did. Three cars sped by driving like crazy in the wrong direction. They almost hit a bus full of early birdwatchers that swerved and almost fell on its side off the road.
Officer Black chased after the offenders and managed to overtake the last car in the race and block its path. The driver of the car was a teenager named Nancy Lee. Officer Black asked her to step out of the car but she refused. Calling him names and shouting four-letter words at him, she said she would sue him for harassing her. She wanted him to move his car out of the way of hers. He, of course, did no such thing. But he was reluctant to pull Nancy out of the car because he was a man. So he radioed his partner, Officer Jane Wood, asking her to come on her motorcycle to his aid.
When Nancy Lee saw that the policeman was calling for reinforcement, she jumped out of the car and began to run. Unfortunately for her she ran in the direction in which Officer Wood was coming to help her fellow policeman. By this time some people came out of a house to see what the shouting and the police siren were about. The bus full of birdwatchers arrived too, and the driver and other people in it got out. Many were ready to lynch Nancy Lee and threatened to beat her to a pulp with their binoculars.
Officer Wood leapt off her motorcycle and cornered Nancy before the angry people from the bus could surround her. In a minute she had handcuffed the girl, despite the fact that she was screaming, scratching, spitting and kicking violently.
“Why are you doing this to me?” yelled Nancy. “I wasn’t the only one driving in the wrong direction. Go get the others. I’m not going to go to jail alone. It’s not fair!”
“Give us their names,” said Officer Black, “and we’ll get them too.”
“No way,” said Nancy. “I’m not a squealer. You have to let me go. It’s not fair for me to go to jail if they don’t.”
“You could have caused a major accident. You could have killed or maimed these people. And you have insulted us and scratched and kicked and spat at Officer Wood,” said Officer Black.”Doesn´t any of that matter to you?”
“You don’t know how to do your job,” shouted Nancy. “You suck at it! You can’t arrest me unless you arrest the others. It´s not fair! It’s not just, you incompetent assholes!”
One of the birdwatchers was a retired judge on an outing with his grandson. He looked Nancy in the eye and said, “How can you ask for justice if you haven’t been just yourself? You did what you shouldn’t have done. As a result, the officers are doing what they have to do. Anyone who breaks the law can be asked to pay for it. You see, the law is like anything else. You break it, you pay for it.”

TRUE OR FALSE:
1. Policeman Black was trying to catch some reckless drivers.
2. The reckless driver he caught was a sweet and docile little old lady.
3. Nancy got out of her car quietly because she wanted to avoid a scandal.
4. Some of the birdwatchers wanted to lynch Nancy because she could have killed them.
5. Nancy wanted the police officers to let her go because she was innocent.
6. The incompetent police probably saved Nancy’s life because the birdwatchers were about to lynch her.
7. In this case, the police did what they could under the circumstances.
8. One of the birdwatchers was a judge who was on an outing with his wife.

DESCRIBE NANCY, THE RECKLESS DRIVER. WAS SHE CAPABLE OF THINKING OF ANYONE EXCEPT HERSELF? WAS SHE REALLY THINKING OF HERSELF?

How to use this post:
-Read the text. Don’t just skim it trying to find answers.
Make a list of the words that are new to you.
-Answer the true or false exercise fully. Explain all the answers. Quote the text to support your answers and/or explain your reasons for the answers in your own words.
-Find adjectives that describe Nancy Lee´s character. Try to write four or five significant sentences about her. You can base what you write on the text, but your sentences have to make sense.

O a ti misma.

TRUE OR FALSE:
1. El policia Black estaba intentando pillar a unos conductores kamikazes.

Glorvina

Hi! Long time no see! I know it's not summer, but given the global warming, I think it might be prudent to teach you one of my favorite songs, which I´ve taken the liberty of translating here into Spanish. I learned it when I was little and I love it because soft rain brings good harvests and thus avoids my having to raise my voice. Remember, I´m a banshee.

Plastic Surgeon's Suggestions / Sugerencias del Cirujano Plástico

The first week of February is coming to a close and Mr. Binky is working really hard on the first of his New Year's resolutions, which is to better his image. On the advice of the ex-pirate Salty Boogerbeard, he has consulted the famous plastic surgeon Dr. Cameron-Cameron Campbell-Campbell. The doctor has offered Binky over a hundred possible new looks, but not feeling  particularly attracted to any of them himself, he has decided to consult his worst critics, the Leafies of Minced Forest.

Wow! A contest! We can vote for the face we trust the most! The Man in the Moon is cool! No! I'm going to vote for the hot lady with the gold earrings. Or for the man who might turn into a werewolf, that should be thrilling to watch! It´s years since there's been a werewolf in our forest. No! My choice is-"

¡Guay! ¡No! ¡No! Mi elección es ...

Frankie / Curro

We ought to vote for the face that reminds us most of ourselves. One of us is always the best choice in everything.

And after hours of debate, voting and counting votes the winner is:

Grandma was right! Nothing works like being yourself! It seems my people really like me.

La abuelita tenía razón. Nada funciona como ser tú mismo. Parece que a mi gente le gusto.

Leopold / Leopoldo

We chose him because we hate change. Surely he's not thinking that because we've chosen him we're going to support him.

But Binky is thinking ahead...

Meanwhile, Aislene, Alpin and Arley are on their way to the North Pole to visit Fergus the Toymaker.

While you wait for them to get there, read a great poem about someone who thinks like Leafy Frankie clicking on "I Only Like People Exactly Like Me."

3 other passive sentences / 3 otras oraciones pasivas

Let's see if I get this right. These are three different kinds of sentences they always teach you after explaining the passive voice because they are in some ways similar.

A) It …..is…..verbo en participio…..that…..oración entera.

It…..is…..said…..that…..Madonna is a better businesswoman than singer.

It…..is…..thought…..that …..Paris is the city of love.

It …..is….. believed….that …..spinach makes children strong.

Practice:

1. English people believe that black cats are lucky.

2. There is a rumor that Jane has left her husband.

3. People say that money begets money.

4. People think Peter’s film is too long.

5. They say the police found the stolen money.

B) Sujeto…..be…..verbo en participio…..to…..verbo en infiitivo…..resto.

Madonna…….is…....said……to……be……....a clever businesswoman.

Paris………..is……..thought...to…...be……....the city of love.

His music…..is…reported…....to…...sound…...terrible.

Practice:

1. They say that money begets money.

2. In Thailand they think white elephants are a good omen.

3. The press reported the mayor to be missing.

4. They say Mrs. Jones has taken the money.

5. It is known that Pat bullies his classmates.

2ª mitad: sujeto pasivo...participio…resto.

Susan…had/got...her hair…cut…today.

We…are having/ are getting…the car…fixed…here.

She…had had / had got…the beds…made…for us.

Practice:

1. They are curling Sylvie's hair right now.

2. They have removed Jack's tattoo.

3. A plastic surgeon has enlarged Pandora's breasts.
