English and Constitutionalism / El Inglés y el Constitucionalismo

I – INTRODUCTION / INTRODUCCIÓN

Constitutionalism seeks to protect the freedom of the individual from the arbitrary authority of the despot. Constitutionalism is a universal movement in the sense that this protection has been sought for in all parts of the world at one time or another. Because of the bicentenary of the Spanish Constitution of 1812, fondly nicknamed “the Josie,” because it became effective on St. Joseph’s day, March 19, 1812, the students of 4C are doing research for English class on the ways in which the struggle against the abuse of power in the Anglo-Saxon world developed and on how what occurs in one nation can influence what later happens in others. We will publish what we find in a booklet that will be our contribution to a treasure chest full of icons of the Pepa (the Josie) that is being prepared by our Reading Plan.

El constitucionalismo busca proteger la libertad del individuo de la autoridad arbitraria del déspota. El constitucionalismo es universal en el sentido de que esta protección se ha buscado en todas partes del mundo en algún momento u otro. Con motivo del bicentenario de la Constitución Española de 1812, cariñosamente tildada la Pepa por haber llegado a ser efectiva el día de San José, 19 de Marzo de 1812, los alumnos de 4ºC estamos realizando trabajos de investigación para la asignatura de inglés sobre la manera en la que se desarrolló esta lucha contra los abusos del poder en el mundo anglo-sajón y como lo que ocurre en un país influye en lo que después sucede en otro. Vamos a publicar lo que encontramos sobre este tema en un cuadernillo que será nuestra contribución a un arcón lleno de iconos de la Pepa que está preparando nuestro Plan de Lectura.

We shall start by telling what we have learned about how the different attitudes of two English kings affected constitutionalism. We will do this in two posts, one about Alfred the Great and another about John Lackland.

Empezaremos por contar como las actitudes tan diferentes de dos reyes ingleses afectaron al constitucionalismo. Lo haremos en dos entradas, una sobre Alfredo el Grande y otra sobre Juan sin Tierra.
