The Prisoner's Ballad / Romance del Prisionero

Every May, ever since I first heard it,  this possibly 13th century anonymous ballad comes to my mind. Today, I wondered what it might look like in English. Here is one possibility.

He aquí una posibilidad.

In May, it was in May,
When the weather is warm,
When the wheat shoots skywards
And in fields flowers swarm,
When the lark cares to sing
And the nightingale replies,
When lovers serve love
With caresses and sighs,
Save I, sad and troubled,
Who in this prison lie,
Ignoring when day lights
And when night cloaks the sky
Were it not for a little bird
Who sang for me at dawn...
An archer slew my gentle friend,
God crush his heart of stone!

Que por mayo, era por mayo,
cuando hace la calor,
cuando los trigos encañan
y están los campos en flor,
cuando canta la calandria
y responde el ruiseñor,
cuando los enamorados
van a servir al amor,
sino yo, triste, cuitado,
que vivo en esta prisión,
que ni sé cuándo es de día
ni cuándo las noches son,
sino por una avecilla
que me cantaba al albor...
Matómela un ballestero;
¡déle Dios mal galardón!

Posy Ring Suggestion / Sugerencia de sortija de flor y poesía

I saw them in an article about the 400th anniversary of the Bard. They were popular in his time and those sold by French bookdealers today are a bit expensive for secondary and high school students. But what does it matter? We´ve been gifted with an idea and we can make them with something like fimo. It´s a good activity for this very significant year. If I were you, I´d make and give out a few, choosing the inner inscriptions with tender care. It could brighten up or lighten up your day.

What am I talking about? Rings of love, friendship and/or appreciation with an inscription on the inside. The one in the image above is from the British Museum. If you want to read more, click on Posy Rings.

Beggars / Mendigos

Someone sent me this photo of beggars standing at the door of one of Madrid's oldest and poshiest restaurants. I think it is a very good picutre to think and write about. There are so many ways of handling this subject. I suggest you find yours.

Mrs. Mortimer at the Book Fair / La Sra. Mortimer en la feria del libro

I coincided with Mrs. Mortimer at the Book Fair and if you are not already acquainted with her, I think I ought to introduce this illustrious colleague  to you. This 19th century teacher is said to have terrorized Victorian children with her books. Nevertheless, I am sure there were kids that found them fascinating. The one I brought home with me from the fair is based on several of her geography books. Today she is modern in the sense that there are still hordes of people like her of all nationalities and in all countries. I know this from my own experience. Even at a time when people who would once never have ventured to leave their tiny Spanish hometowns now vacation in Bali, I have been asked many peculiar questions about the places where I have lived and the way I look Only two examples: Was your house a tree? (Asked in Spain because I happen to be born in the Philippines) and What do you need such a long nose for? (asked in the Philippines because I have a European nose.)

Among Mrs. Mortimer's pearls are ideas such as these:
- The Spanish language is the most beautiful of European languages, but there are few sensible books written in it.
- In Russia, only people who can run very fast dare to go out in the streets in winter. The rest would freeze and turn into statues.
- If you don't like Lisbon when you stroll through its streets, you would like it even less if you lived there because it is full of insects that bite.
- The Turks look so serious that they appear to be intelligent.
- In all of Europe there are no cleaner people than the Dutch. If they didn't rub and scrub so much there would be rust on all their kettles.
And this is only to start with. It's not just about Europe. Africa, Asia, America and even Australia also receive her attention.
If political incorrection doesn't upset you more than it should, you will enjoy reading her.
