Speaking English to Skip Queues / Hablar inglés para colarse

Sancho Panza

I´m going to tell you one more thing speaking English is good for. It occurred to me to go to the airport at Barajas to see off a friend who was emigrating in search of a job. I travelled to Madrid by Avant and from the train station at Atocha went to the airport at Barajas by a special bus that follows this route. This bus is quite convenient and costs only two euros, but most of the time it is very crowded with people and luggage. If the owners of the luggage are rude and impolite, they don´t place their suitcases in the space reserved for them but put them on the seats next to the ones they occupy, thus forcing other passengers to ride standing or put up a fight for their rights the result of which depends on the fortune of war. But what surprises me the most is the shameless ease with which some people manage to avoid the very long queues to get on the bus.

I was able to see how this works on my way back to Atocha from Barajas. One of these buses slammed its doors right in my nose, thus placing me in the enviable position of first in the queue for the next bus. Being in this privileged position, I was able to learn how some people get to sneak in before others who should rightfully go first. First three fine and elegant gentlemen ignored the queue and went all the way up to the post with a sign on it that announced the bus´s route, pretending to read what was written on it. I, of course, as first in line, was standing next to the said post. Soon, smiling and acting as if I were an old friend of theirs they asked me in good English though they were clearly from the Middle East, if this was where the bus to Atocha stopped. I answered that this was indeed the queue to the said bus, gesturing towards a lady who was some five people away and last in line. They gave me an evil look and stayed put right next to the post. They remained there until they saw another fifteen persons had taken their places in the queue and that it was very likely that there would be a riot if they tried to get in first.

Now, this story might not make much sense just now, but it soon will. Because a very pretty little Chinese girl with her gigantic suitcase came all the way up to me and asked me with a great big smile and in an English she was clearly very proud of, the same question the gentlemen from the Middle East had asked. I gave her the same answer. She was not willing to take her place at the end of the now very long queue, so she also tried to pretend we were friends by continuing the conversation, which she could only do asking another stupid question. “But… which terminal is this?” “Terminal one,” I answered. “Ah, I know, but…which terminal is this?” “Terminal one,” I replied again. “Oh,” she persisted, “terminal one. Yes, but is this really terminal one?”

And the second person in the queue bit the hook. This was also a young girl, but Spanish. I had noticed she looked a bit depressed, like many people who are returning from a holiday they have enjoyed, but she not only looked wistful, she also looked a little worried. The Spanish girl, in a rudimentary English, said that perhaps this was terminal three. “One!” I said, pointing at a huge sign behind us that left no doubt where we were at. The Chinese girl laughed and gestured that she was appealing to me to let her remain where she was instead of sending her to the end of the queue. I? Certainly not! But the Spanish girl suddenly saw that she could continue speaking in English with someone. She could – this now became evident – practice everything she had travelled to learn. Not everything was lost. It was not yet over. She still did not have to return to a place where no one would speak to her in the language she had been struggling to learn. She began to talk like mad to the minx who, of course, was second to get on the bus, unfairly before more than thirty people. Since I had no suitcase with me, the enterprising girl was first to place her suitcase on a passenger´s seat – the one for the handicapped, of course. What a smile she gave me when she did that! But that yes – she had to put up with the faltering English of her benefactress all the way to Atocha. Well, like I said, another reason to learn foreign languages.

And now it is your turn to practice by stating your opinion in English about all this.

Permission / Permiso

Arley

Mum! May I bring a friend to Devin's birthday dinner?

Titania

If it´s the one that devours everything, no!

Si es ese que devora todo, ¡no!

Arley

This one eats very little. That's a cool dress you´re wearing.

Este come muy poquito. Es guay el vestido que llevas.

Titania

There are only two dresses from my summer collection that I haven´t worn yet. I miscalculated. I should have ordered more. Which should I wear to the dinner?

Arley

You look good in both, but I like the one with the butterflies best.

Titania

They´re monarch butterflies. Right, I´ll wear it. It will help people see who is boss.

Son mariposas monarca. Pues sí, me lo pondré. Así se enterarán mejor de quien manda.

Vinny

Your Majesty, you look beautiful in whatever you wear. There is nobody like you!

Titania

Ah! Your friend is a samara from Minced Forest! Loyal rustics who hate progress. I love those people. If everybody were that simple, I could have bread and butter for dinner at home tonight.  What a drag awaits me. My head is already aching.

¡Ah! Me encanta esa gente.

Arley

Well, Vinny and I are quite excited about having dinner at The Poultice, Mum.

Nauta

This post is about a reckless driver. The young man in the illustration is not the sun god Phoëbus Apollo. His name is Phaëthon, and the reason why he looks so much like Apollo is that he is Apollo's son. Perhaps I should have said “was,” for Phaëthon is no longer among us, due to his imprudent driving. Phaëthon did not depart alone. He carried off a lot of people with him and made many of those who survived the terrible accident he caused very unhappy for the rest of their lives.

Phaëthon had lived since he was born with his mother in Ethiopia. But when he learned that his father was the sun god, he decided to move in with daddy.

Daddy´s house was an incredibly beautiful palace next to the ocean built at the spot beyond India where the sun rises every morning at dawn. It was the creation of the extremely ingenious god Vulcan, and therefore, although it was built of gold, silver, ivory and precious stones, the craftsmanship was worth more than the materials. Vulcan had also decorated the walls with splendid paintings that always showed something new when contemplated. And the blue and green haired sea nymphs often dropped by, adding even more charm to the place with their delicate presence.

When Phaëthon had seen it all and got bored of hanging out at this wonderful place flirting with the Nereids, he did not return to Ethiopia to do something useful there. He figured the time had come to prove that he was as good as his father was at driving the chariot of the sun across the sky from dawn to dusk.

It is true that Phaëthon began by asking for license to drive the chariot. But when his father regretfully reminded him that he was mortal like his mother and would not be strong enough to control the four horses that pulled the solar chariot, he did not relinquish his purpose. He rubbed himself all over with a sun lotion so potent that it would keep him from getting burned even when so close to the sun and without taking any further precautions leapt into the chariot and took off.

At first the road was steep and the horses climbed upwards rather slowly although much faster than usual, but when they got to the spot they should have reached at noon, they began to plunge downwards at an extremely dangerous velocity. Phaëthon saw there was no way he could control them, and when in his frustration he hit them with the whip, they attempted to disband and flee all headed in different directions. The constellations of stars that inhabit the sky became alarmed. Some rushed out of the chariot’s way, bumping into each other. Others, feeling they were being attacked, went for the chariot. Phaëthon tried to avoid them flying as low as he could, but by so doing set fire to the trees below. Whole forests were soon ablaze and as the fire spread cities and towns were razed to the ground with all their inhabitants. In the underworld, Hades had to call it an emergency when the souls of thousands of victims began to flood at his gates.

“Get that guy!” everyone shouted at Zeus Jupiter. “It’s either us or him!” And the king of the gods, sorry as he was for his son, threw a lightning bolt at his grandson when the chariot was just above the great river Eridanus, into which Phaëthon’s lifeless body fell wrapped in flames. As for the horses, they did what most do when left to themselves which is head for home without further ado. The mad ride was over.

We Romans believe that the river the Greeks called Eridanus is the river Po, which runs through many important Italian cities.

Among the many disasters caused by Phaëthon, the creation of the Libyan Desert stands out. Legend tells that all this territory was very fertile and highly populated before Phaëthon reduced it to sand.

Throughout history there have been vehicles named after Phaëthon. Let us hope their owners are inclined to drive prudently.

Vinny / Vicentico

Whaaaah! Oh, what a setback! How can I not have won? Everybody says I´m such a lucky little leaf! No, don´t try to console me. I´m coming apart! It´s the first time I´ve ever lost anything at all! Besides, I should have had beginner's luck, too. Why didn´t I?

¡Buaaaah! No, no intentes consolarme. ¡Estoy deshecho!

Arley

Vinny, don´t take it that way. It´s almost impossible to win mortal lottery. In truth, it´s just a way of collecting taxes or doing charity. Didn´t you know that?

Vinny/ Vicentico

No. I was sure I would win. If not, I would never have gambled the coin I found in the forest and that I should have handed over to the Fund for the Ransom of Kidnapped Fairies. But, you see –waaaahhh! I need it to eat!

Arley

To eat? You have nothing to eat? How awful! I had no idea. By the way, what do you eat?

¿Para comer? ¿Pero es que no tienes para comer? ¡Qué horror! No tenía ni idea. ¿Por cierto, que es lo que coméis?

Vinny / Vicentico

We only eat a bit of earth mixed with water, though we gather acorns and nuts and such to help creatures of the woods in need to get through harsh winters. It´s not that we´ve ran out of any of these things. It´s that one day we heard the Binky say he was going to remodel his office and you know how we hate change, so I was sent to spy on Binky and learn what sort of evil he was plotting.

In truth and as usual, Binky had no idea what his own intentions were and he discovered what he wanted to change while having dinner at a posh restaurant with the Feng Shui Fairy Wisteria. The restaurant is called The Poultice, and since it is new, they ordered the tasting menu. For four hours I watched the waiters serve all kinds of bizarre, rare and luxurious morsels. I was hooked. It was as if I had been bewitched.

Day after day and night after night all I do is dream of tasting that food. I know it's absurd, but I also know I will feel like a failure while I don´t  get to give myself a taste of these delicacies. All this, plus losing the little clover lottery, has shattered my self-esteem. I´ll never be the same again.

Arley

Why didn´t you tell me what all this was about before? My parents want to celebrate my brother Devin's birthday at The Poultice. If I ask my mum, I´m sure she'll let you come with us.

Diplomacy / Diplomacia

When the lottery seller told Arley that he couldn't buy a lotto ticket because he was a minor...

Vinny / Vicentico

What do you mean by saying he´s a minor? He´s more than seven years old! Are you looking for a fight? Is it because of the heat?

Lottery seller

Hey! What is that? Are you a ventriloquist?

¡Uy! ¡Qué susto! ¿Eso qué es? ¿Es que eres ventríloquo?

Arley

You let me handle this, Vinny.  No, my good lady, I´m not a ventriloquist. This is just a toy I bought at a dime store. They´re all the rage this summer. My grandfather is waiting outside. I´ll hop out and tell him he has to come for his lottery ticket himself.

No,mi buena señora, no soy ventríloquo.

A little abracadabra later…

Un poco de abracadabra después…

Arley

Vinny, you mustn´t say I´m lying to the mortal lady. What I´m doing is called diplomacy. I´m getting what we want without provoking an incident between our people and the mortals due to our different customs. Hello, good afternoon, madam! I would like a ticket for the little clover lottery.

Lottery seller / Lotera

Do you want it from the machine or would you rather pick the numbers you´ll play with yourself?

Vinny / Vicentico

I choose number 1 because it comes first. It´s very brave to do that. And I choose 2 so it won´t feel bad because it didn´t get first place. I choose 7 because it is the lucky number and must be present. I choose 27 because it is the number of the toadstool I live in. I choose 35 because I have closed my eyes and pointed with my ballpen and touched this number. And last, I choose 50, for the very reason that it is last, in case in turns out to come up first. All done! Have I won?

¿He ganado?

Arley

We won´t know until tonight. Now the lady will give you an official ticket with these numbers that you have chosen in exchange of the coin you found in the forest. Later we can see the result of the lottery on my laptop.

And the result was…

Y el resultado fue…

But sometimes there are consolation prizes...

Pero a veces hay premios de consolación...

Shopping for teacups / Comprando tacitas

Heather / Brezo

My sister Thistle and I are planning a tea picnic. We lacked teacups, so we went shopping for them and bought ones we both liked - that's not easy - in a shop in Canterbury. The teacups are Bavarian and say the name they have in common is "Monika." The treasure hunting site where we found them is called "The Children's Society Shop." Everything there glows with a special little light.

Thistle / Cardo

I´m going to make cucumber sandwiches. We both like those too, and so might you. Don´t be scared to try them. They're healthy, easy to make, and not expensive. Recipe coming up soon.
