Nauta´s Mini Mythology: Pallas Athena / Mini Mitologia de Nauta: Palas Atenea

Nauta

This month I´m going to tell you about Pallas Athena, Zeus´ imaginary daughter. In the picture, she is with her owl, her spider and her son. Her story is a bit complicated, so we´ll do it in sections.

I – The Birth of Athena / El nacimiento de Atenea:

Hera

Zeus, you don´t love me. You´d rather chase other women than make me happy. You only married me because I am the wife everybody thinks the king of the gods should have. I want a divorce.

Zeus, tú no me quieres.

Zeus

No way. You might find someone who will make you happy and people will say that fellow is better than I am. I can´t allow that.

Hera
I´m going to sue for a divorce. I´m going to prove to the world how bad a husband you are. I´m going to speak with your mistresses and have them testify against you.

Zeus

None of them will testify. They are with me because they are scared of me or because they love the gifts I give them. They know very well which side their bread is buttered.

No testificará ninguna.

Hera

Well, then I´m going to make your life impossible. Theirs too. Until someone gives.

Zeus

That´s all I need. Not only does no one love me, they´ve got to make it patent.

Nicolo Machiavelli

You needn´t worry about that. Everybody is scared of you, and that is what counts. Leaders don´t need to make themselves loved. They do need to make themselves feared. I explain this very well in my book on advice for leaders, "The Prince."

Zeus

Ok, ok. But I need to be understood by someone. I feel very lonely. My wife hates me, my mistresses take advantage of me, I can´t trust my sons because they are probably plotting to overthrow me...maybe one of my daughters...Artemis, my marvellous daughter, you are beautiful, clever and brave. Surely you´ve noticed how sad I feel. Come here and give daddy a kiss to console him.

Vale, vale.

Artemis

You are a chauvinist and I despise you.

Tú eres un machista y yo te desprecio.

Zeus

Oh. Well, what one has to put up with! And they say I´m the bad guy. Well, I just wish I had another daughter, sweeter and more understanding than you. I can imagine her perfectly. Good, very good. Clever, very clever, because she has to be to understand a complex personality like mine. Beautiful, very beautiful, because she is my daughter and I´m such a looker. It´s as if I could see her. Tall, blonde, blue-eyed, Greek-nosed...and brave, so brave that she will confront anyone who criticizes me. And loyal, loyal to the hilt. She exists only to defend me. Well, a true supporter.

Vaya.

Electra

And she is to have an Electra complex?

¿Y ha de tener complejo de Electra?

Zeus

You go away and come back some other day. Your story is very complicated and with Athena´s tale we have more than enough. Besides your story is very sad, and I want my daughter to be serious but cheerful. A winner, who goes everywhere accompanied by Nike, the goddess of Victory. I want...Ehhhhh! I have this awful headache! My head feels like it´s going to burst. Vulcan, bring your hammer and bust my head open. It feels like it´s going to explode but it doesn´t and I can´t stand it!

Quiero…¡Uyyy!

Hephaistos

There´s no need. Your head is already open. And there´s this lady in full armour coming out of it.

No hace falta.

Pallas Athena
I´m Pallas Athena, the perfect daughter of my beloved father.

II – The Birth of Erichthonius /El Nacimiento de Erictonio.

Hephaistos

I´m impressed. The more I look at you, the more perfect I find you. I, too, have created women, beautiful automats that work and sing like the best. But you...you´re perfect.

Eres impresionante.

Athena

You can tell I´m marvellous because like me, you´re clever and creative. Look, since I can tell you are going to appreciate this, I´m going to show you something I created yesterday. This is an olive tree. Its fruits, which are called olives, give the best oil in the world. It is edible. It´s healthy and tasty. And if you soak the olives in salt and water for a while, they soften and become delicious. I´m going to participate in the next contest of divine inventions with this tree.

Hephaistos

It has just occurred to me than since we are both really talented, maybe we could get together and create another really extraordinary being.

Athena

Look, I´m going to put an olive and two feathers that dropped off my owl in this box. You put something of yours in here too.

Gea

I want to participate. I´ll be the uterine mother. Since I´m the goddess of the earth, you can bury the box in me for nine months. Let´s see what we get.

Yo quiero participar.

Hephaistos

Ok, I´ve dug up the box. You open it, Athena.

Bueno, ya he desenterrado la caja. Ábrela tú, Atenea.

Athena
Horrors! What a fright!

¡Qué horror! ¡Qué susto!

Hephaistos

Has the baby got a defect? It must be my fault. Everybody says I´m ugly.

¿Es qué el bebe tiene algún defecto? Seguro que es por mi culpa. Todos dicen que soy feo.

Erichthonius

I look a little strange because I have a snake´s tail instead of legs, but I´m really just like everyone else. When I grow up I want to found a city and be its first king. May I?

Gea

I foretell that you will found a city named Athens. I myself will teach you the secret of growing wheat so you can feed your people.

Athena

The truth is he is very much like anyone else. Except for the way he looks, there´s nothing extraordinary about him.

Hephaistos

Shall we try again?

¿Lo volvemos a intentar?

Atenea

Better not. Or we might produce someone really extraordinary, better than my father. I don´t want to him to feel bad.

III – The Origin of Spiders / El Origen de las Arañas

Arachne

I am Arachne, the ancestress of all spiders. I was a very talented young woman who could weave better than any of the goddesses. For this reason they were jealous of me, but to make matters worse, one day I wove a tapestry that showed how the gods sometimes behaved worse than mortals. Zeus was prominent in it, and Athena felt obliged to defend her father, though he had no possible excuse. She changed my shape, so that I would be ugly and frightening, and everyone would avoid me. But she didn´t entirely achieve this because I now have a lot of admirers, mostly goths and arachnologists. And the threads I spin are so strong that surgeons are studying the possibility of using them to sew up their patients with after surgery.

And a word from the owl... / Y unas palabras de la búha...

Nictymene

Yes, most people think I am a male but I am really a female owl. I am a glaux Athene noctua, a very wee owl that even today makes its nest in the Acropolis. Not even the largest of my kind measures more than eight inches. My name, Nyctimene, means "Night Moon." That´s all
I wanted to say. Ah, and Athena and I are on the cutest of Greek coins.

Virgo / Virgo

Hestia

Virgo is several of us. And some of us are here to explain what this constellation is about. In one word, it´s about independence. I´m Hestia, the goddess of home and hearth. Apollo, god of the sun (Mini Mythology IX, July 2008) and Poseidon, god of the sea, both wanted to marry me. I saw at once they were more interested in competing with each other than in making me happy. I decided not to chose between them. Instead of having my own home, I decided to dedicate my time and effort to making other people happy. I couldn´t change the world. But I could help people make a haven of their homes. I´m the goddess who makes your home feel safe and cosy. People say I´m nice to everyone and am kind and warm. Tradition says that all you have to do to feel my comforting presence is light a little orange candle.

Virgo somos varias.

Artemis

Nobody has ever dared tell me how to live my life. Even Zeus couldn´t refuse me my independence. And be warned... awful things happen to those who invade my privacy. Ah, I´ve been in this blog before...in August, 2008, Mini Mythology X.

Astraea

My name means "starry maiden." I´m virtue herself. I have the answers to most of the world´s problems. But I´m not popular. People would rather make their own mistakes than listen to my suggestions. I got tired of being insulted at worst and at best ignored. I left the earth and moved to live on the moon.

Kore

Often Virgo is depicted holding a corn cob or a sheaf of corn. It´s because of me. You know who I am. I´m Demeter´s daughter and Hades´wife (Mini Mythology), Persephone or Proserpine. People also call me Kore, which means "the maiden." I am the goddess of the harvest, and Virgo is present in September, which is harvestime in many countries. I may not look very independent. It may look like I am always being bossed around by my mother and my husband, but the truth is they can´t do without me. My mother was in this blog in May 2008, Mini Mythology VII and my husband and I were featured in October, 2008, Mini Mythology XII.

Dicea

If there is anyone that has to be independent that is a judge. I´m Dicea, the goddess of justice. I won´t say more about myself now, because I´ll be back late in September to do Libra.

Alpin

Now it´s my turn. I also want to feel comfortable. Let´s see what you have thought up for me. Don´t think I am going to be satisfied with a six bedroom house. The houses you´ve given my sisters are cute but tiny. Out there there are authentic palaces and castles with really tall towers. And estates with a lot of acres round them. ¿How many acres will you give me?

Ahora me toca a mí. ¿Cuántos acres me vais a dar?

Ludovica

Well, you see, all the houses on the Isle of the Blessed come with all the territory you want to put between yours and those that surround it. All you have to do is wish for it and your garden will expand and turn into a huge estate. But remember, the more space there is around your house, the further it will be from everyone else´s . Ah, and if you want more rooms, you must add them yourself. That will depend on how hard you are willing to work to get ahead.

Alpin

What? You are going to give me a miserable hut with six rooms? Neither you nor your shells have the least idea what I am like or what I like.

Ludovica

Well, to be frank, we were going to let you choose between two options. You can have a standard house of the kind we build here for everyone or you can take a house we have designed specially for you. What do you think of this as your first home?

Fiona

Wow! Alpin, it´s magnificent! You must be really pleased!

¡Es imponente! Alpin, estarás contento.

Branna

Say thank you!

¡Da las gracias!

Alpin

Now you´re talking! We can begin to do business!

¡Así se habla! ¡Ya podemos empezar a negociar!

Ludovica

The outside is inspired by a famous monument, but we have reformed all the inside so you can have all kinds of luxuries because the model wasn´t designed to entertain a little kid. You get several pools, audiovisual rooms, two discos-

Alpin

Perfect. And what else?

Perfecto. ¿Y qué más?

Ludovica

Well, a kitchen that will occupy all the basement where you can store your poor suffering fridge comfortably and a lot of other facilities. But there is a small problem. You tell him, Earl.

Earl

You see, every day we take granite from the quarry. But since it is magic granite, early next morning, the granite is just like it was before. That is, the granite replaces itself. Unfortunately, this kind of magic is only possible if we extract a limited amount of stone from the quarry. That is, if we take too much, it doesn´t get replaced. There would be a hole there. And if we take too much every day, well there would be nothing left at all. This means that those yet to be born wouldn´t have homes.

Alpin

¿So what? They should have shaken a leg and been born earlier.

¿Y qué? ¡Qué hubiesen espabilado y nacido antes!

Earl

Right. Well, since it doesn´t depend on them, we can´t leave them homeless because they weren´t quick enough. Besides, there´s another condition for the system to work. None of our granite can leave the island. So what we had to do was go out there to the other side of the Other World, and with great effort and at an almost impossible price buy for you a great kind of granite they have out there, so you can have your gigantic home and be happy. The catch is that these stones are homesick. They can´t stay put here on this island. You have to take the monument with you out there if you want to enjoy it or you will wake up after spending your first night in it and find you are somewhere out there anyway, and you will have no idea where your house has landed.

Michael

You´re saying we have to take that whopper away with us? But where could we possibly put that?

Earl

It´s easier than it looks. You can put it in the garden of the house where Alpin is now living. To be exact, on this very spot.

Michael

What? On top of the my Aunt Aislene´s violets? I don´t think she´ll like that.

Alpin

But it doesn´t fit! Are you stupid or what?

¡Pero si no cabe! ¡Estáis tontos! ¿O qué?

Earl

Or what, kid what! We´ve treated the stone with a special product that allows it to expand or shrink at its owner´s will. We ourselves will move it to the indicated spot and at first it won´t be any bigger than one of those monuments at Maduroda. Do you know what that is?

Alpin

My house is going to be mini golf sized?

¿Qué mi casa va a tener tamaño de mini golf?

Earl

Only while it is in your parents´ garden. When you are older you will be able to take it wherever you please, always within the human world, and expand it till it reaches its natural size. If you´re not afraid that it might explode, you can try to expand it even further.

Michael

I´m the one who is afraid! How are we going to be able to live in peace with a threat like that in the garden? This kid might decide to expand it any night and squash the whole neighbourhood while we are sleeping!

Ludovica

I think we designed it so it could only expand by day, didn´t we?

Earl

Yes. It has to be by day, although once it has expanded, it stays like that until the owner decides to shrink it again, by night.

Michael

Which means that somebody will have to be watching this kid from sunrise to sunset to avoid a catastrophe. Well, now I want you to tell me what we´ve done to deserve this.

Earl

Nothing bad, I´m sure. Quite the contrary. You´ve only chosen to take care of him. But you can rest assured because the kid won´t be strong enough to expand the house until he is older and besides he will have to do it where it can fit. In the middle of the Sahara desert, for example.

Alpin

Are you saying I can´t use my house until I´m older?

Earl

Yes, you can use it. But you´ll have to shrink yourself first to do it. The Fay can change size at will. Haven´t you ever done it?

Sí, puedes. Pero te tienes que encoger tú. Las hadas podemos hacer eso. ¿Es que no lo has hecho nunca?

Alpin

Of course I have!

¡Claro que lo he hecho!

Ludovica

Well then, you decide. A regular home here on the Blessed Isle or a monumental home with six swimming pools, each with its waterfalls, a kitchen as huge as the basement, audio rooms, discotheques, etc., for the present all in your mum´s garden but with the possibility of being expanded somewhere sometime in the future?

Pues tu mismo.

Michael

Alpin living in or out of Avalon! What a dilema!

¡Alpin viviendo dentro o fuera de Avalon! ¡Menudo dilema!

Alpin

I think it´s perfectly clear. I have vision. I chose the monument outside.

Pues yo creo que está claro. Tengo visión de futuro. Elijo el monumento fuera.

Ludovica

Well, your house has just landed on your mother´s violets. I´m sure you´ll want to leave here as soon as possible so you can enjoy it at once. Girls, here are the keys of your houses.
