Belated Happy Birthday, Mr. Blake

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

A Robin Redbreast in a Cage
Puts all Heaven in a Rage.

Sí un petirrojo está enjaulado
El Cielo entero está enojado.

A dove house filled with doves and Pigeons
Shudders Hell thro´al its regions.

A dog starv´d at his Master´s Gate
Predicts the ruin of the State.

A Horse misus´d upon the Road
Calls to Heaven for human blood.

En la carretera el caballo maltratado
Por sangre humana al Cielo ha clamado.

Each outcry of the hunted Hare
A fibre from the brain does tear.

Por cada grito de la liebre acosada,
Una fibra del cerebro es arrasada.

A skylark wounded in the wing,
A Cherubim does cease to sing.

Una alondra herida en el ala,
Un querubín que ya no canta.

The gamecock clipped and arm´d for fight
Does the Rising Sun affright.

El gallo armado para la pelea,
Hasta al Sol Naciente afea.

Every Wolf´s and Lion´s howl
Raises from Hell a Human Soul.

The wild deer wandering here and there
Keeps the Human Soul from Care.

The Lamb misus'd breeds public strife
And yet forgives the Butcher´s Knife.

Contiendas provoca el Cordero maltratado,
Aunque al Cuchillo del Carnicero haya perdonado.

The Bat that flits at close of Eve
Has left the Brain that won´t believe.

The Owl that calls upon the Night
Speaks the Unbeliever´s fright.

He who shall hurt the little Wren
Shall never be belov´d by Men.

Jamás será por los Hombres amado
Quien al pequeño Chochín haya dañado.

He who the Ox to Wrath has mov´d
Shall never be by Woman lov´d.

Quien al Buey haya Enfurecido,
Jamás por las Mujeres será querido.

The wanton Boy that kills the Fly
Shall feel the Spider´s enmity.

He who torments the Chafer´s sprite
Weaves a Bower in endless Night.

The Caterpillar on the Leaf
Repeats to thee thy Mother´s grief.

Kill not the Moth nor Butterfly
For the Last Judgement draweth nigh.

He who shall train the Horse to War
Shall never pass the Polar Bar.

The Beggar´s Dog and Widow´s Cat,
Feed them and thou wilt grow fat.

Scrying a world in a grain of sand I lost track of time,
And now, admired Mr. Blake, I am afraid that I´m
Late in wishing you happiness on your 250th birthday
For what I thought is today was the day before yesterday.
But I see you are blissfully sitting within a wild flower,
And in the palm of infinity, what difference what´s the hour?

Belated 250th birthday, Mr. Blake, and many happy returns on November 28th. I hope you had a nice day in infinity.

Mr. Blake´s advice: READ! ¡LEE!

We want to be thankful too. / Nosotros también queremos poder dar gracias.

We are Russet and Onyx, Glorvina´s piggies. We´re here in representation of our friends the turkeys who are in hiding. Give thanks all you like tomorrow. It´s a good thing to do. We do it several times a day for all the good that is done to us. Eat pumpkins and corn and cranberries, beans and fruits and goodies. But please don´t eat our friends the turkeys. Give the turkeys something to thank you for. Thanks to all of you who will have a vegetarian meal tomorrow. We love you.

Goody Estrella / La Comadre Estrella

Michael

Here I am searching for my lost shoe in the dark.

Glowworms

You´ll never find it.

Nunca lo encontrarás.

Michael

Don´t be so negative. Hey! What is that over there?

No seáis tan negativas. ¡Eh! ¿Qué es eso que hay por allí?

Glowworms

It´s not a shoe. It´s something you find with a metal detector.

Michael

You´re right. It´s an old coin.

Tenéis razón. Es una vieja moneda.

Glowworms

Is it valuable? Put it in your crock. Or better yet, give it to us. We´ll buy caramel-coated popcorn at the next football game we go to.

¿Tiene valor? Ponla en tu olla. O mejor aún, danosla a nosotras.

Michael

I didn´t know gloworms ate popcorn.

No sabía que las luciérnagas comieseis palomitas.

Glowworms

We used to eat snails and slugs and stuff like that. But Glorvina taught us to eat pollen and nectar and now we have a sweet tooth.

Michael

Glorvina did that? I thought she was an ecologist. I thought she would want animals to eat what they always have.

Glowworms

But she´s also vegetarian, and she´s convincing us to change our uncivilized ways. Now that the IRA isn´t active, she isn´t as busy as she used to be. She´s really happy about that, and she should have gone on a vacation to the Bahamas, but you know what banshees are like. They need something to worry about. Well, some of us were always vegetarian anyway. Will you give us the coin?

Michael

I have to try and find its owner first. Hey! There´s something moving over there.

Tengo que intentar encontrar al dueño primero. ¡Eh! Hay algo moviéndose por ahi.

Glowworms

It´s a little old lady. Do you think it belongs to her?

Es una viejecita. ¿Crees que le pertenece a ella?

Michael

We´ll ask. Good evening, madam. Have you lost anything?

Preguntaremos. Buenas noches, señora. ¿Ha perdido usted algo?

Señora Estrella

Good evening. No, I haven´t lost anything. I´m gathering asparagus.

Buenas noches. No, no he perdido nada. Estoy buscando espárragos.

Michael

Hadn´t you better do that by day? It´s not very safe to wander in fields in the dark.

You´re right. In fact, that´s how I lost my eye.

Glowworms

Are you looking for it too?

¿Lo está buscando también?

Señora Estrella

No. I have it right here underneath the patch. And I can see perfectly well with it. But I had an accident while I was out gathering asparagus one night, long ago. I got used to wearing the patch and now I can´t do without it. What are you doing out here?

Glowworms

We´re looking for a shoe.

Buscamos un zapato.

Michael

But we found an old coin. Do you have any idea to whom it could belong?

Pero encontramos una moneda vieja. ¿Tiene idea de a quién puede pertenecer?

Señora Estrella

Let me see it. Hmmm. There´s a fellow who wanders about this field that has two coins exactly like it. I thought he was searching for his boots. Somebody cut them off with his legs still inside.

Dejame ver. Hum.

Glowworms

How awful! Poor man!

¡Qué espanto! Pobre hombre.

Señora Estrella

He´s not too upset about it. Actually, he says he can move about a lot faster swimming in the air now that he´s a ghost.

Michael

Do you know where I can find him?

¿Sabe dónde puedo encontrarle?

Señora Estrella

I know his name is Nuño Paez. He´s a knight of the Order of Calatrava. You can tell, because he wears a white cloak with the red cross that is distinctive of that order. He keeps two coins just like the one you found inside what is left of his belly. He´s quite transparent in that section. I can´t tell you where to find him, but I´ve often seen him wandering about this field.

Michael

This place is called Alarcos, isn´t it?

That´s right. Many things have happened here. One of them was a huge battle between Christians and Muslims. Isn´t it a shame how people are always being made to kill each other? The ghosts of many people who participated in it still wander here. Ask about. Someone is bound to know where you can find him. And most are friendly now that they are dead. Come to think of it, they were when they were alive too.

It takes two to make a pair. / Hacen falta dos para hacer un par.

Don Quijote

Michael, what are you doing?

Michael, ¿qué estas haciendo?

Michael

I´m looking for one of my shoes. Whenever I have a little time to spare, I look for my lost shoe.

I look for it everywhere, because it could be anywhere.
It has to be somewhere.

Don Quijote

I noticed you only wore one, but I didn´t say anything because I thought it was an excentricity of yours. If you can´t find it, why don´t you just wear another pair?

Michael

I wish I could! You see, a leprechaun´s shoes are not just any kind of shoes. We receive a pair as a gift when we are born and they usually last us all our lives.

We leprechauns are both bankers and shoemakers. As bankers, we are in charge of protecting the gold that belongs to the fairy community. Fairies aren´t rich. Nor are we interested in making money.

We don´t use gold among ourselves. We keep some to use in our dealings with humans, who love gold. Most times, we use it to pay unscrupulous mortals ransoms so they will release members of the fairy community that they have kidnapped.

Don Quijote

There are quite a few unscupulous mortals. I understand that´s why you keep away from us.
But what happened to your shoe?

Michael

In truth, I lost both my shoes. But I was able to make myself a new one. Only one, because a leprechaun can never make a pair of shoes. He can only make one.

The leprechaun who wants to make a pair, needs to find another leprechaun who will make the other. We are very independent, solitary creatures. You rarely see two or more leprechauns together. But everyone needs help from other people. And so we won´t forget that, tradition rules that we must ask for help when we want a pair of shoes, since without shoes, you can´t really get anywhere.

I made myself a new shoe but...I can´t make a pair on my own.

Don Quijote

How did you lose your shoe?

¿Como perdiste el zapato?

Michael

It´s a long and embarassing story, but if you don´t mind listening, I´ll tell it.

Don Quijote

Yes, please. I would like to hear it.

Sí, por favor. Me encantará escucharla.

Michael

Now that you know most of my relatives, you might be wondering why my father wasn´t at my Halloween party.

The truth is, we´ve fallen out. So he decided to celebrate Halloween elsewhere. To be precise, at a pub in Manchester. Perhaps you remember that my brother Finbar had to go fetch him. And that his wife Lira Ronan was very upset about it, and ranted all night.

Don Quijote

Actually, yes. It is hard to forget.

Pues sí. Es difícil de olvidar.

Michael

Well, my father likes to celebrate lots of things besides Halloween. In fact, he parties all the time.
If he celebrates at a pub we, his family, are acquainted with, the owners often have the deference to call us when he needs help to get home.

A few months ago, my father was celebrating because his favorite football team, from Drogheda, had won an important game. The owners phoned me around midnight and I went to fetch him.

This particular pub is located on the side of a very lonely and spooky road. The moon was new, which means it wasn´t there at all. I didn´t have my glowworm lantern with me - my glowworms had taken the night off and gone to watch the football game with my father - and I couldn´t see a thing. I was advancing very slowly... very cautiously... very prudently...when...Pow! Suddenly, I was flying in the air.

When I hit the ground, for a second I didn´t know where I was. Then two lanterns full of glowworms suddenly lit up and shone in my eyes, blinding me. And I heard my father´s voice shout: "What are ye doing lying there on the ground with your arse on the heather? Are ye daft or what? You´ll catch blooming pneumonia. "

I realized I had been hit by my father´s jaunting car. I got up and checked to see if I was alright, and found I was, except for a few bruises and that I had lost my shoes. I started to look for them, but I had to keep an eye on my father at the same time. And except for the spots illuminated by the lanterns my father has tied to his jaunting car, I couldn´t see a thing.

So I decided I would take him home and return at dawn to search for my shoes. My father didn´t want to let me drive. He insisted he could do it himself, but, of course, I didn´t let him.

We got into a tremendous fight on the way home because he had been driving without asking the gloworms to light up, and I said he was very irresponsible and had to mend his ways. And he took offence.

Fergus MacLob O´Toora

Is it speaking ill of me ye are again? Me own son?

¿Me propio hijo?

Michael

I, ill of you? I´m only speaking the truth. What are you doing here? You can´t come into my blog speaking like that.

Fergus

Och! I can´t speak like an Irishman on me son´s English blog? Is that what you are saying?

¡Och!

Michael

You´ll confuse me pupils. Erh, I mean, my pupils.

Confundirás a mes discípulos. Eh, es decir, a mis discípulos.

Fergus

Fine! But confused it is you are yourself! Speaking English like the English on a blog! Arrghhh! Is it on that Englishwoman´s payroll that you are? What kind of a leprechaun are you? Sure and you´ll be the death of me, you will!

¡Bien!

Michael

Me, the death of you? You were almost the death of me.

¿Yo, matarte a ti? ¡Casi me matas tú a mi!

Fergus

There ye go again! ´Tis exaggerating ye are! Never in all me life have I ever seen anyone who likes to exaggerate like ye do. But, ´tis an elegant blog ye´ve got here, though, I must say. I´ve never seen or been in one as elegant in me life.

Michael

Of course you haven´t. You´ve never seen or been in a blog before. Where did you park your jaunting car? In the middle of the Internet?

¿Donde has aparcado tu carro irlandés? ¿En medio de Internet?

Fergus

Ah, the Internet! ´Tis a grand invention, it is. All full of addresses of Irish pubs worldwide, every one of which I mean to visit. ´

¡Ah, Internet!

´Twas yer cousin Darcy brought me here, on his fine horse. He wanted to show me his picture that ye put on the web, and him so handsome. Ye know how well he thinks of himself.

I left me jaunting car safe at home, where ´tis being repaired because of the harm ye´ve done it.
He dejado mi carro a salvo en casa, donde está siendo reparado debido al daño que le has hecho.

Michael

I?

¿Yo?

Fergus

Sure, ye´ve knocked it inside out when ye run into it, never looking where ye were going, charging against it like a raging bull!

Michael

I? You can´t be serious. How can you say such things? You´re not only irresponsible, you´re impenitent as well! And you are laughing at something that could have had serious consequences. If I were mortal, I would have had to report you to the police before you harmed someone else. And I would have, too!

¿Yo?

Fergus

Report your father to the police! Would you, you traitor? As if I could harm me own son! And what harm have I done you, may I ask? ´Tis well enough you are to insult your father!

¿Denunciar a tu padre a la policía? ¿Lo harías, traidor? ¡Como si yo pudiese hacerle daño a me propio hijo! ¿Y puedo preguntarte que daño te he hecho?

Michael

I´m not insulting you! I´m asking you to be a little less featherbrained. Look at me! Limping all over the place! And it could have been worse. I could have suffered a trauma and become one of those phantom hitchhikers that stop drivers on dark roads.

No te estoy insultando.

Fergus

You could walk perfectly well if you had a second shoe. And you could have a new shoe if you apologized for insulting me.

Michael

Apologize? Me? You ask me what kind of a leprechaun I am. Well, look at you. You´re the kind of leprechaun that makes us all look like irascible, irresponsible loons.

¿Disculparme? ¿Yo? Me preguntas que clase de léprecan soy. Pues mirate a ti mismo.

Most respectable leprechauns stay at home, where they are needed, so it´s only philanderers like you that wander off to human taverns and make trouble there, and get into trouble there. And then we, the respectable silent majority, have to go and rescue you and maybe pay your kidnappers a ransom with the gold that belongs to our community.

Fergus

Are you saying you spend your money on ransoming us? Because we lose no time in stealing it back again, and you never lose a cent, you greedy, selfish misers!

Michael

It´s not that! It´s how you can´t look after yourselves. And you never thank us for it!

Don Quijote

Michael, why don´t you introduce me to your father before one of you says something he might regret? I know a tavern in Valdepeñas where I would like to buy your father lunch. Maybe we can have a little talk and I might persuade him to make you a new shoe.

Fergus

Did I hear the word "tavern"?

¿He oído la palabra "taberna"?

Don Quijote

I only drink a little wine with my meals because in my time water was often undrinkable, full of germs and quite unsanitary. It was safer to drink wine. But today, it is definitely safer to drink water.

Michael

Father, may I introduce you to Mr. Alonso Quijano, also known as Don Quijote de la Mancha? Mr. Quijano, this is my father, Fergus MacLob O´Toora.

Fergus

I thought it might be Don Quijote! You´re the spitting image of yourself, sir! I´m very pleased to meet you!

Don Quijote

I´m pleased to meet you too.

Michael

You can be sure I drove my father´s jaunting car with him in it safely home and left it there in perfect condition. But I don´t have a picture of it to show you and I want you to know what a jaunting car looks like, so here´s a grand picture of an Irish jaunting car I found on the Internet.
