Capricorn / Capricornio

Hi. One year ago the constellations of the zodiac started visiting this blog. The cycle began with Aquarius, and I, of the constellation you call Capricorn, am here to close it. I´ve been in this blog before, in Nauta´s Mini Mythology number VIII, in which Nauta told you about Zeus the king of the gods, and about me, the nymph Amalthea. I was Zeus´nurse when he was a baby and his mother had to hide him. I fed him with milk from my herd of goats. To thank me, he gave me the cornucopia, or horn of plenty, from which all sorts of good things flow ceaselessly. And he also put the constellation Capra up in the sky to honor me. So here I am along with my herd and other goats.

Hola.

Aigipan

I´m up there too. I´m half goat and half fish. I helped Zeus fight against the monstrous Typhon, also mentioned in the myth of Piscis, in our Mini Zodiac and against the Titans (Mini Mythology II). These last stole his sinews so that he couldn´t fight but I returned them to him.

Johann Galle

I found the planet Neptune in the goat´s constellation.

My nanny, when I was little, was a Capricorn too. Hi, nanny!

¡Hola, nanny!

Read some of the tales about goats my nanny used to tell me. It´s easy.

For Haiti / Para Haití

Teachers from the Department of Philosophy and Ethics are raising funds for Haiti. Let´s all contribute. Although mildly, we ´ve sometimes felt the earth move back here lately. Enough to make one reflect.

Trial by jury / Juicio con jurado

Michael

I´m so nervous. This is my maiden case.

Estoy nerviosísimo. Este es mi primer juicio.

Fergus

Michael, son, if you lose this case you will be the shame of your family.

Aislene

And if you win it, you will too. Remember that villain tried to starve your cousin to death.

Michael

Things like this only happen to me? I´ll do the only thing I can do. Justice. I call on Mildew Finn to testify.

¿Cosas como ésta sólo me suceden a mí? Haré lo único que puedo hacer. Justicia. Llamo al estrado a Mildiu Finn.

Mildew Finn

My brother is both an ignorant and a responsible person. Not responsible for the crimes he is accused of. That, no. But he responds whenever he is assigned a job, doing it faithfully. In his ignorance he has tried to carry out the tasks of a librarian the way the guardian of a great treasure would, for that is what he has always been. I´m not saying books aren´t treasures. As a vocational librarian, I know they are. But he doesn´t know what a book is at all because he never learned to read or write. In brief, this misunderstanding is due to his having no idea what he was doing. I´m the one who is guilty, because I recommended him for this post, but although I knew he was a little dense I never imagined he was this dense.

The defense is trying to make you believe that the accused is not a perverse kidnapper, evil artíficer of a heinous crime, but only an illiterate bumpkin. But I ask you, who in the reign of fairy is not an illiterate bumpkin?

Titania

Hey! I object! I´m not an illiterate bumpkin, nor is my foolish husband.
¡Uy, protesto!

Mungo Binky
Madam, I believe you can´t object. You´re the judge. The defense has to object.

Titania

Well, as far as I´m concerned, he has. It´s true most fairies would rather dance and make merry than read, and maybe I should urge my subjects to read more, but I don´t do it because it is easier to make them happy if they are superficial than if they start having ideas and pestering me with suggestions about doing this or that differently. I´ve enough of that with Bingy. Please understand me, I need to have my beauty sleep, and not to have unending headaches. Well, that. Oberon and I, like the rest of the fairies, well, we are very popular among writers and other artists, and we love them too. And all that. And we´re not stupid at all.

I didn´t mean to offend. I only wanted to make clear that one thing is ignorant and criminal another.

Si no he querido ofender.

Michael Toora

Well, if they are two different things and the accused is the first, could it be that he is not the second?

Don´t try to confuse me, nephew. I know what I´m saying,

Mildew

Before I leave the stand, I want to say that it is true that my brother asked me on several occasions to write notes addressed to the leprechaun that is today his counsel. He wanted me to convince the leprechaun that he had better close his blog because too many books appeared in it and if he made the fairies want to read they might show up at the library which is exactly what he, the accused, was most afraid of. What I did was write notes congratulating the leprechaun on his blog and urging him to continue publishing posts because I knew Curmudgeon would never find out. What I didn´t know was that he would use bricks and his slingshot to make these notes reach the addressee. And I want to apologize for the brick-throwing. I feel that I could have avoided this because ignorant people can be taught and I never really took my brother´s ignorance seriously.

That´s enough, ma´m! Or you´ll end up being guilty of having caused the Trojan war!

Michael Toora

Well, that explains the brick affair, and I forgive this lady. That is, her crude brother. I now call on Arley to testify, for he is one of the victims of the alleged kidnapping.

Arley

I had a great time. And I learned a lot. Among other things I discovered I´m not allergic to dust from books. I mean to return daily. I was sorry for Alpin because he is used to getting everything he asks for and Mr. Finn gagged him so as not to hear him. But I´m not angry with Mr. Finn. In truth, I´m also sorry for him, because he lives in a library and doesn´t know how to enjoy it. Now that Alpin is free, I no longer feel sorry for him. But I still feel very, very sorry for Mr. Finn.

Pienso volver a diario.

Leafies

Right, lad, right. That´s the way to testify. Make us take the stand!

Bien, niño, bien. Así se testifica. ¡Que nos llamen al estrado!

Uncle Ernest, Death´s Messenger / Tío Ernesto, Mensajero de la Muerte

I call on my son Alpin, witness for the prosecution.

Yo llamo a mi hijo Alpin, testigo de cargo.

Alpin

Through the fault of that yokel I missed the Halloween party and all the other big meals. Where are the gifts the fat man who eats my cookies should have brought me? It´s the twentieth of January and we´re still here. Are we going to be here forever? I want to go home and raid the fridge!

Aislene

Don´t you worry about the gifts or the holidays, my baby, because we can celebrate Christmas till the second of February. If what you want is to go home, we´ll leave this minute. And you are coming with us, Ernest, my love, because I want all the family to be together.

I sure would like to. But I can´t. I´m the prosecutor.

Ya me gustaría. Pero no puedo. Soy el fiscal.

Aislene

Well, let someone else take your place. That villain isn´t going to keep on harming us now that we are all together.

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

I! I will be the prosecutor!

¡Yo! ¡Yo seré el fiscal!

Aislene

Well, suit yourself! C´mon, delegate on that leaf, Ernest, and we´ll go straight home.

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

I withdraw all the charges!

¡Retiro todos los cargos!

Tasmanian Jury / Jurado de Tasmania

Cooee! Not so fast! We want to give the judges our verdict. We find the accused Curmudgeon Finn guilty only of being one more vulgar bungler. We find his accomplice Basiliska guilty of thinking more about her own needs than about what a nong her boyfriend is and we find Magpie guilty of not returning the leprechaun shoe to its rightful owner.

¡Eh, que estamos aquí! ¡No tan rápido!

Titania

Now that we have a verdict we can sentence the three.

Mungo Binky

All this has happened because fairies don´t go to school. I-

Yo…

Titania

We sentence Curmudgeon to be educated by Minister Blinky until he is smart enough to be the headmaster of the school of Bingy´s dreams.

Oberon

As for Basiliska , we fear she will be condemned to return to her old job as guardian of a fairy treasure. We sentence Magpie to return the leprechaun shoe to Michael Toora, and to let him choose something from her garage that, as fit compensation for all the inconveniences caused him, he may take freely for his own, at no cost to himself whatever, choose he what he may.

Fergus

Michael! Son! Let me embrace you! You´re my pride and joy!

¡Michael! ¡Hijo! ¡A mis brazos! ¡Eres mi orgullo y alegría!
