Recuerda que en esa formula se pueden colar expresiones temporales como already (ya), ever (alguna vez), just (acaba de), never (nunca), not yet (todavía no), so far (por ahora), till now (hasta ahora), up to now (hasta ahora), by the time (para cuando).

Had you already paid for the things you bought before leaving the store?

0. Who had eaten the cake by the time Sam was ready to blow the candles?
The twins had eaten the cake by the time Sam was ready to blow the candles.
1.

Who had you sent invitations to before the wedding was cancelled?
I had sent invitations to all my friends before the wedding was cancelled.
1. and  2.

Mary had knitted sweaters for the children before.
3. and 4.

Paul had bought plants from that nursery many times before.

On January 25th people in Scotland celebrate Burns' Night, a feast of literature. When poet Robert Burns, author of beautiful love poems and transmitter of the ideas of the French Revolution died at the age of 37, his friends established a tradition that still goes on today. They got together on the 25th of January, which was the date of Bobby´s birthday to honor the memory of their friend. They had a grand dinner, recited his poems and sang his songs. This videos tell you more about all this.

The main dish of a Burns' Night Dinner is haggis. It is not something anybody would want to eat. Mary Stuart hated it and would not allow this typical Scottish sausage to be exported so that foreigners would not think ill of her people. But Burns praised it in verse. If you watch the video below you will understand why the English can't always understand the Scots when they speak.

The Giving Tree / El árbol dadivoso

Shel Silverstein

The man in the picture is the poet Shel Silverstein and the poem below is his. We have mixed it up a bit with a translation we prepared in Spanish so you can start reading it in one language and go on reading in another and back to the first again and so on and so forth.

The Giving Tree / El árbol dadivoso

Once there was a tree.... / Erase una vez un árbol

take me far away from here. / me lleve lejos de aquí.

The Community of Friends of the Garbage Dumps / La Comunidad de Amigos de los Vertederos

It was sunset when Alpin arrived at the mortals’ city dump. The last rays of the sun danced on the glittering garbage and Alpin felt like he had reached heaven. There was no celestial music, but he was overtaken by smells more exquisite to him than the odor of sanctity, which is almost always of fresh cut roses. For a moment he remained rapt in the ecstasy of his olfactory sensations, and when he recovered from this trance he wondered if it were still the same century that he was living in, even the same millennium, for he felt he had tasted – or rather, sniffed - eternity.

Then it occurred to him that aside from eternity there was infinity, lying right before him, for the dump was tremendous and there seemed to be no end to the junk in it. Now his appetite for food returned and he began to search for something to eat. First he quarreled with a rat over a tantalizing half-eaten chicken leg. The rat bit his right thumb, but he won the fight. And in a gesture of victory, he shook his floating hair and the locusts flew out to feast too.

That was when they attacked him.  With used syringes, bits of glass and pins.  They were neither rats nor doves, nor maggots, nor bugs.  A new kind of vermin, small but terrible and with the ability to speak his language.

Rubbishies / Basuritas

Get off our property! This dump is occupied! This garbage has owners! Us!  You’ve invaded a Rubbishy reservation!

¡Fuera de nuestra propiedad! ¡Este es un vertedero ocupado! ¡La basura tiene dueños! ¡Has invadido una reserva de Basuritas!

 Alpin

Are you…? I can’t believe this! You’re fairy folk! What in the magic world are you doing flittering like flies through this garbage?

¿Sois…? ¡No me lo puedo creer! ¡Sois hadas!

  Rubbishy / Basurita

Hey! Don’t you dare think you’re better than we are! You’re scavenging through garbage yourself. Have you come to live here? You can’t! We’re too many and we´re still receiving the fairies from this year´s discarded Christmas trees! They have priority. Plus you are too big and you eat too much. Leave! Yes, you and your pesty pets!

¡Eh! No te atrevas a pensar que eres mejor que nosotros! ¡Estás escarbando en la basura tú también! ¿Has venido a vivir aquí? ¡No puedes! Ellas tienen prioridad. Además, tú eres demasiado grande y comes mucho. ¡Vete! ¡Sí, tú y tus hambrientas mascotas!

It turned out these tiny fairies were the Community of Friends of the Garbage Dumps and had gotten there when the plants they lived in were cut or uprooted. Some had simply followed an autumn leaf that had been their home before it was sucked up by a garbageman's vacuum cleaner. Yes, they had followed their homes to the dump, and not knowing where to go from there, had made a new home for themselves in that unwholesome place.

 Rubbishy / Basurita
Where are you from? Are you homeless too? You don’t look like a forest fairy. I’ll bet you’re from one of those fancy houses in Apple Island. That’s where your kind like to dwell.

¿De dónde eres? ¿Tampoco tienes hogar?

Alpin

My home isn’t on the island. It’s next to a forest that exists between our world and that of the mortals. Minced Forest is the name of it.

It turned out that some of the Rubbishies had relatives among the Leafies of Minced Forest. They got all carried away asking Alpin if he knew their kinsleaves, and since the world is no bigger than a hanky, it turned out next that he did.

Alpin

I’ve never been much interested in making friends with the little leaves there, but I do have a friend who is well acquainted with them, especially a teensy, nosey one named Victor or Vincent or… Hey! What a coincidence! Look! That’s my friend I’m talking about standing there staring at us. I’ll bet he’s searching for me.  Arley! Hey, Arl, you can’t recognize me because of my hair, but it’s me, Alpin! I’m under a puckish spell. Yes, believe me, old chap, this is me now! Come over here and tell these garbage-dwelling fairy folk about your Leafy friends at Minced Forest.

 Arley

Oh, woe,  Alpin! What has Garth done to you?

¡Ay, que barbaridad, Alpin! ¿Qué te ha hecho Garth?

Once Arley got over the shock of seeing Alpin so transformed, he did tell the Rubbishies about the Leafies, and it turned out there was a whole tribe of cousins of Vinny’s  there. Before he left the dump taking Alpin back home with him, he promised he would return with his wee friend to have a Post Christmas dinner there. The Post Christmas Season was the holiday season at the dump, for that was when it was at its fullest of all kinds of trash, some of it very valuable to the Rubbishies.

Alpin had lost his sense of direction, but Arley took him by the arm and led him back to his parents’ home, where his poor mother swooned when she was told that was her beloved son standing there before her saying he would rather eat what Fiona had thrown into the trash can in the kitchen while she was cooking than the usual fancy Christmas dinner.

Once Aislene came to herself, it took all Arley, her husband Ernest and her twin daughters could do to try to keep her from flying off to make mincemeat of her nephew, Garth the Púca, wherever he might be at.

They were all over her holding her down and fearing they would eventually have to let her go when her son Handsome Darcy arrived just in time like the cavalry. He simply asked her sweetly to please forget about going to get the Púca and, of course, she did just that because nobody can say no to Darcy. So they all sat down to have dinner in apparent peace on that then silent night and Arley was finally free to go join his own family for dinner at his parents’ palace in Apple Island.

Darcy
