Happy New Year! / ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

We´re partying at my sister-in-law´s pub, Lira Anadyomene´s
"The Jealous Merrow."

We´ll tell you all about it as soon as we can.

Happy 2009!

Greetings / Saludos

Psst! Merry Christmas! ¡Feliz Navidad! Shhh!

December / Diciembre

I´m December. It´s too cold for me to leave my house. I´ll wish you a Merry Christmas from here. For many years there has not been so terrible a winter. Look at the tracks of the little satyr. It´s like a poem by Louys says: "His little cleft footprints alternate like holes in a snow white robe." Button up your overcoats!

Soy Diciembre.

Foom, foom, foom / Fum, fum, fum

Don Quijote

Sing it, Sancho!

Sancho

On December five and twenty, foom, foom, foom!
On December five and twenty, foom, foom, foom!
A babe for us to love came down this night, this blessed night
Of a maiden pure and holy in a stable mean and lowly!
Foom! Foom! Foom!

On December five and twenty, foom, foom, foom!
On December five and twenty, foom, foom, foom!
Little birds from out the wood fly to the child, the infant child
Keep him warm in winter weather, fill the manger with sweet feathers!
Foom! Foom! Foom!

Tiny stars look down from heaven, foom, foom, foom!
Tiny stars look down from heaven, foom, foom, foom!
If you hear the baby sigh, don´t let him cry. Don´t let him cry!
Now we sing the holy story, brighten all the sky with glory!
Foom! Foom! Foom!

Señora Estrella

Encore! One more time!

The Prescription / La Receta

Alpin

Uff! Arrghh! I can´t carry this stuff any further. I´m going to have to sit in the snow and eat all this blasted candy. But then I won´t be able to get up...

¡Ufff! ¡Arrh!

What the heck! I´m a kid! Somebody is going to have to come and find me. I´m their responsibility. And It´s so late I´m sure they´re already out there looking.

The trouble is nobody knows I took a short cut through the forest...No, the trouble is it´s snowing.

If I sit still the snow will cover me and I´ll turn into a snowman and nobody will recognize me and I´ll be stuck here until I´m defrosted come Easter. I wouldn´t get any Christmas gifts and I don´t think I could bear that. Sniff. Woe is me! Wahhhhh!

Esnif. ¡Ay de mi! ¡Uaaaaaaa!

Heather

Alpin, it´s ok. We´ve got the things you lost.

Tranquilo, Alpin. Tenemos las cosas que has perdido.

Alpin

Lost? I haven´t lost anything. Oh, you mean the stuff Nauta asked me to buy at Henbeddestyr´s. No, I didn´t lose that. I left it a couple of trees back because I couldn´t carry so much stuff. What are they thinking of loading a small kid with all that junk?

Perdido? Yo no he perdido nada. Oh. No. Yo no he perdido eso.

The Minced Forest Choral

The holly and the ivy
Only want to live in peace
And the fir trees and the pine trees
Feel you´re treating them amiss.

El acebo y la hiedra
Sólo quieren vivir en paz
Y los pinos y abetos
Dicen que les maltratáis.
The mistletoe should be cut
Only by druids´hands
In a moonlit grove at midnight
Where the fay may safely dance.

El muerdago sólo por manos
De druidas se ha de cortar
En un bosque a luz de luna
Donde las hadas a salvo puedan bailar.
We´re glad that you love these plants
It´s ancestral to want them around
But you all should live by forests
And watch them grow on freedom´s ground.

Nos alegra que améis estas plantas
Querer tenerlas cerca es algo ancestral
Pero id a vivir junto a bosques
Y vedlas crecer en libertad.

They shouldn´t be bred in cages
To be sold in huge shopping malls
Supermarkets or gas stations
The very idea apalls.

Don´t choke them with spray paint,
Paste and glitter, fake snow and stuff
Or electrocute the poor trees
With Christmas lights - Don´t be so rough!

No las ahoguéis con pintura,
Pegamento, purpurina y nieve artificial
No electrocutéis árboles con luces
Todo eso está muy mal.

Alright, you guys, it´s Christmas!
Then go out and do some good.
Do not put tomorrow in the garbage
What today should be in the wood.

Vale, tíos, son Pascuas.
Pues toca amar y ayudar

We wish you a sane Christmas!
We wish you a sane Christmas!
We wish you a sane Christmas!
But we want to live free!

¡Os deseamos unas Pascuas cuerdas!
¡Os deseamos unas Pascuas cuerdas!
¡Os deseamos unas Pascuas cuerdas!
¡Pero dejadnos en paz!

Alpin

What is the meaning of this? It´s winter. You´re leaves. You´re supposed to be dead. Not bawling some weird song with all your might in the middle of the forest. Besides, you suck! You´re out of tune! The words don´t rhyme, the lyrics don´t fit with the music nor -

¿Y esto? ¿Pero de que vais? Es invierno. Sois hojas.

Thistle

Have a heart, Alpin! Or I´ll pop you like a cork.

¡Ten compasión, Alpin! O te casco como a una nuez.

Arley

You´re the Leafies who are trying to start a forest choral, aren´t you? You probably know a lot of songs. Do you know any of the songs a fellow named Fergus MacLob sings?

Leafies

Sure. We know Fergus MacLob O´Toora very well and it is a fine Irish tenor he is. We should ask him to join our choral. What do you want with Fergus?

Claro.

Arley

I have an allergy and Henbeddestyr Parry has given me a prescription for it. He says I have to take one of Fergus´s songs.

Alpin

Fergus is my uncle and right now he´s probably out with a search party looking for me. And not doing it too well or I wouldn´t be out here freezing.

Thistle

Alpin, we can do each other a favor. If you show us the way to your uncle´s house we can help you carry all this stuff there.

Alpin

It´s not a bad idea. Except that I don´t want you to touch my candy. Well, I wouldn´t mind letting Heather have a couple of lemon drops. She doesn´t eat much, so I´m safe offering her some. Are you anorexic, Heather?

No es mala idea. Pero hay un problema. No quiero que toquéis mis caramelos. Bueno, no me importaría darle un par de caramelos a Heather. No come mucho, así que no corro ningún riego ofreciéndoselos. ¿Eres anoréxica, Heather?

Thistle

No, she´s not! She eats all her vegetables. We don´t want to steal your candy, Alpin. We want to see your uncle. Get going!

¡No, no lo es! Come todas sus verduras. No queremos robar tus caramelos, Alpin. Queremos ver a tu tío. ¡En marcha!

The Singing Hour

Henbeddestyr and Taffy

´Rwy´n cofio ers dyddiau am hen gymeriadau
Yn canu baldedi mewn marchnad a ffair -

Alpin

What is the meaning of this? Why are you screaming your heads off? Thistle, pop them!

Henbeddestyr

We´re not screaming. We´re singing! It´s twelve o´clock noon. We always sing for half an hour before lunch.

No gritamos. Cantamos.

Alpin

Lunch? You haven´t sold a thing in the whole morning and you´re closing a shop full of customers to have lunch?

¿Almorzar?

Henbeddestyr

It´s the singing hour. Every day at twelve o´clock noon and also at
twelve o´clock midnight we stop whatever we are doing and we sing for half an hour.

Henbeddestyr and Taffy

Hwy ganent morddoniol, mewn gain mor gartrefol,
Nes twyllo o´r bobl eu harian a´u haur...

Del mercado a la feria iban andando,
Llevandose nuestro dinero con grán afán...

Alpin

Take our money? You mean to charge us for hearing you yell in an alternative language? You know how long I´ve been here? I´m leaving without paying even for the things on my list. That´s what you get for making me waste my precious time.

¿Llevarse nuestro dinero?

Taffy

Three things you can do, lad. Go home, get into bed and never get up again.

Tres cosas puedes hacer, chaval.

Henbeddestyr

If you leave now, you can take a sack of lemon drops with you for free as well. As many as you can carry. I don´t charge my clients. I don´t use money and I love the life I live.

Yo no cobro a mis clientes.

Ah, and remember to tell your cousin Michael that when he feels better we can go for a long walk in Snowdonia. I can gather herbs and he can look for his lost shoe. I heard he found one but is still missing the other. Who knows? He might find it there.

Keats

I don´t think I´ll get to publish my post today. But I don´t mind waiting. I´m used to it. And I think I´ll enjoy hearing you sing.

No creo que vaya a poder publicar mi entrada hoy. A mí no me importa esperar. Estoy acostumbrado. Y creo que disfrutaré escuchándoles cantar.

Two Christmas Songs / Dos Canciones de Navidad

Hi. Here are two songs that were written to convince people they should contribute to just causes.

Hola.
The first song shows us how this was done in the Middle Ages, though it was written in the nineteenth century.

A kind king leaves the comfort of his castle and goes out into the bitter cold to make the life of a poor man a little more bearable. As the song progresses the bitter cold becomes warmth, the warmth of love. The king is a saint because he has done this, and at the end of the song people are invited to follow his example, that is to be kind to those less forunate, especially to contribute to the wellbeing of those in need.

This song is called "Good King Wenceslaus." It is one of the most popular English Christmas carols and you can listen to it here:

The second song was written to defend the rights of animals. The style is totally different -far more aggressive - but the purpose is the same, to get people to work for a cause. The idea is that Santa, who is already a saint, has to do things even better to adapt to the changing times.
But we´re not that different from what we were like in the Middle Ages. If you don´t believe me, ask St. Francis of Assisi what he thought about animals.
The second song is called "Santa Was Run Over by his Reindeer" and you can listen to it here:

¿Allergies? / ¿Alergias?

Heather

Mum and Dad and Thistle and I are here because my brother Arley has an allergy.

Titania

No, he doesn´t. Good morning, everybody! My Arley has got a cold we can do nothing with.

Henbeddestyr

Three things must a queen have: beauty, brains and majesty. And you have all three even in excess, your Majesty. Not to worry. We´ll cure the prince in no time.

Alpin

Hello, Queenie. Queens are people you can ask things for from, aren´t they?

Hola, reinecita.

Titania

You want to ask me for something, forward little boy? Well, you may try.

¿Quieres pedirme algo, niño atrevido? Bueno, lo puedes intentar.

Oberon

And if she doesn´t give it to you, my boy, you can bet I will. Speak out. Don´t be shy. What is it you want? Gumdrops?

Y si ella no te lo da, puedes apostar a que yo si lo haré. Habla, no seas tímido. ¿Qué es lo que quieres? ¿Gominolas?

Alpin

I want your daughter Heather and two hundred other girls as pretty as she is and above all I want Henbeddestyr´s dragon.

Oberon

Erh...heh, heh. Aren´t kids funny!

Eh...jé, jé. ¡Qué graciosos son los niños!

Alpin

I´m not joking! I´m serious! You promised! A promise is a promise and a promise must be kept!

¡No estoy de guasa! ¡Lo digo en serio! ¡Me lo prometiste! ¡Una promesa es una promesa! ¡Hay que cumplir las promesas!

Titania

Henbeddestyr, quick, give this boy a sedative. Make him sleep till Yule. Better yet, till after Christmas.

Alpin

I don´t want to have to wait till Christmas to get my presents! Oberon, are you a liar or what? Give me what you promised!

Thistle

Alpin, stop bullying my father or I´ll pop you! He can´t because you are little, but I can. My brother Arley is ill and the last thing he needs is to hear you yelling your head off.

Alpin

Arley, are you really ill? How bad is it? Are you going to kick the bucket?
Where do you have the bucket?

Arley

I don´t know if I´m going to die or not because I´m supposed to be immortal. But I do know I have an allergy to the mold on autumn leaves. And in the spring, I´m allergic to polen.

Titania

Nonsense! Fairies aren´t allergic to plants. Plants are our lives. Who ever heard such nonsene!

¡Tonterías! Las hadas no somos alérgicas a las plantas. Las plantas son lo nuestro. ¿Quién ha oído cosa semejante?

Arley

It´s not really the plants, It´s because the air is polluted by the humans. And because of their cleaning products. They have no idea what they are doing. It´s bad when they soil things, but when they clean them, it´s bad too.

Let me explain, Henny. I´m living incognito in a big city. The rent is so expensive I can´t pay without letting on I´m no ordinary mortal.

A human who knows my secret but can be trusted lets me live for free in her garage. There´s a white, vintage Rolls Royce in there. I sleep in it every night.

Mrs. Parry

Did I hear right? I come walking all the way from Llanfairpwillgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and the first thing I hear is that this lad is living inside a car?

¿He oido bien? Vengo andando desde el
PueblodelaiglesiadeSantaMaríaenelhuecodelosavellanosblancoscercadelrápidoremolinojuntoal
lugardeSan Tisiliodelacuevaroja
Titania, you´re irresponsible. How can you allow your children to be anywhere near cars? Keep away from cars, children! Or they´ll be your tragic end!

Titania

Arley, you´ve got your own house made of granite stone. Why would you want to sleep in a tacky mortal´s filthy Rolls Royce?
The very idea!

Arley

It´s not filthy. She cleans it every day. That´s part of the problem.
My own house is in Avalon. All people do there is play and sleep. There is so much bliss there I don´t feel safe - erh, that is, I mean I don´t feel alive.

Titania

I offer my son peace and beauty and order and even total bliss but he doesn´t want this. He wants to live in a mortal´s filthy garage in the middle of a city full of delinquents.

Mrs. Parry

It´s the cars´ fault! Doom! Doom! The day I saw the first wheel I knew it was over for all of us!

Oberon

Come on, Mrs. Parry, we´ve all had wheels on our chariots, cars and wheelbarrows since time immemorial. They´re not the problem.

Venga, Sra.

Mrs. Parry

You ignorant innovator! When something takes its time coming, that doesn´t mean it won´t arrive!

¡Innovador ignorante!

Clock
