The Blank Check / El cheque en blanco

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooee!

¡Disguuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusto!

A blight has fallen upon the neighborhood where Death's Coachman dwells with his family.

Aislene, the Demon Bride / Aislene, la Novia Diabólica

Alpin, honey, I’m sorry but you have to shut up. Pull yourself together. You´ve been weeping and wailing for almost a month, and even if that’s less than a few seconds in Fairyland, the earplugs in the local pharmacy have sold out and the neighbors are beginning to frown on me more than usual. Even the trees in our garden are expressing their disgust in brash and rude manners, and I’m certain the zoning committee is considering paying us a visit because of their unspeakable behavior.

Alpin

I’ll admit I´m tired of kicking up a fuss, but this is a matter of principle and there is no way I will shut up until that traitor shares his Christmas gift with me. I thought you were going to ask for something stupid, treacherous Arley, like peace on earth or food for the starving, just like a miss in a beauty contest. Things like that aren’t in the hands of the Magi, so it’s useless to ask for them…but no. I underestimated you. You turned out to be a lot smarter than I thought, you conniving, ambitious, two-faced rascal. When you asked the Magi for an appointment with Dr. Freud, I thought, hey! The guy is really nuts! But when they gave you a blank check to pay for it, I realized why you were so reluctant to tell me what you were going to ask for.

Aislene

Alpin, how can you say those dreadful things to Arley? Don´t you see the poor thing has a serious illness and needs to get cured?
Alpin, ¿cómo puedes decirle esas cosas horribles a Arley?

Arley

It´s not really a blank check, Alpin. It’s just that they have no idea what a consultation with Dr. Freud costs. I´m supposed to fill in the check with the sum the doctor asks for. I can´t give you the check, Alpin. It´s not for what you want if for.

Alpin

All I´m asking for is for you to share it with me. You can fill in a check with any sum you please and you won´t share it with me? What kind of a friend are you, you selfish wretch? You come across a bit of good luck and you don´t remember your friends. Knowing psychiatrists, you’re bound to get a tidy sum if you do as I advice. And you refuse to share! Egotist!

¡Y te niegas a compartir! ¡Egoista!

Arley

I can’t write three times the sum the doctor asks for and split what I´ve added  with you, Alpin. The Magi and I have a gentlemen´s agreement. They gave me the check because they know I’m responsible. I already told you that you can see Dr. Freud in my stead if you want to, but ceding you my appointment is the best I can do. I can´t cheat the Magi like that.

Alpin

Whyever not? That´s the least you can do with the check. The Wise Men have been stupid enough to trust you with their money. It’s nobody’s fault but theirs if you take advantage of this. They should never have tempted you. They’re asking to be fleeced. They know as well as anyone else that everybody does these things. Are you going to be the only fool that doesn´t?

Arley

Yes.

Sí.

Alpin

You know why you´re not doing this? I see why you´re not! It´s because you´re chicken. You think the Magi will break your legs if you cheat them. But they won't. They’re good people. All they’ll do is say they are disappointed in you and maybe folks will gossip for a while and call you mean names, but that's it. And when that's long over you'll still have the money. Use your eyes and look about you, coward. Learn from your environment. Nothing cheek and patience can't fix ever happens to breachers of faith around here.

Arley

I’m not doing it.

No lo voy a hacer.

Alpin

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

¡Uaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Ernest the Dullahan / Ernesto, Cochero de la Muerte

Alright, Alpin, I've had it! I can’t put up with your screaming a second more! I haven't heard anything as annoying since the trumpet felled Jericho. I´m going to take you for a drive in my carriage!

Aislene

No! No! I will! I´ll take both the kids on an outing! We’ll visit our relative Finbar the toymaker. Alpin, I’m going to get you a splendid gift.

¡No! ¡No!

Alpin

Is it a blank check? It’s not like I’m asking for one to be obnoxious. I really need one because, you see, it will help me grow up. It will be an experience for me and I’ll learn a lot. A gift like that is really educational. I will feel really adult and mature once I’ve enriched myself with it. I´ll be a man of the world.

Aislene

What I mean to get you is better for you than a blank check. It’s something unique and wonderful that will be useful to all of us and make us like you a lot better, the plants in the garden included, and it will be good for you too, Arley. But we have to start out this minute. Your cousin Finbar is just back from his two week annual holiday. We have to catch him before he becomes enmeshed in his work again.

Alpin

Ok. I consent because you’ve whetted my curiosity. But remember, I’m only calling a truce. I’m not ending my take the blank check campaign.

Vale. Consiento porque has estimulado mi curiosidad.

Racing with Rats / Carreras con ratas

The Chinese Zodiac / El Zodiaco Chino

The Chinese Zodiac is a twelve year cycle in which each of the twelve years is represented by a different animal. People born during the year of a certain animal are said to resemble this creature. There are so many different kinds of animals that there has to be a reason why these twelve were chosen to give their names and characteristics to the years in the zodiac. The tale we will now relate explains this.

The Jade Emperor, who is the top leader in Chinese mythology, announced that he had invented a twelve year calendar. He summoned all the animals to a meeting where he meant to tell them all about it. He also said that he would name each of the twelve years in the calendar after the first twelve animals to arrive at the meeting.

To get to the meeting, the animals had to cross a wide and dangerous river. The Cat and the Rat wanted to be in the calendar, but they were not very good swimmers. They decided they would ask the Ox for help. Would he be so kind as to carry them on his back to the meeting?

First / Primera

The Ox was a good-natured animal and he agreed to give the Cat and the Rat a ride. Now the Rat was very ambitious and ruthless and he knew the Cat could jump further and faster than he could. He feared that because of this ability the Cat would win first place in the race. So when the three got to the middle of the river the Rat pushed the Cat off the Ox´s back and into the water. When the Ox was about to reach the shore, the Rat jumped off his back and touched dry ground first, thus winning first place in the new calendar. The surprised Ox only made it second.

Second / Segundo

Third / Tercero

Third place was awarded to the Tiger, who arrived immediately after the Ox, complaing that strong as he was, he had found it difficult to fight the heavy and dangerous currents that had tried to drag him downstream.

Fourth / Cuarto

The fourth to arrive was the Rabbit who said he had crossed the river jumping from stone to stone whenever he saw a chance to advance.

Fifth / Quinto

The Dragon was the fifth. He had wings, and he came flying. He was a very powerful animal and he could have gotten there before all the others but he was altruistic and had stopped to make rain for the inhabitants of a village that was suffering from a drought.

Sixth / Sexta

Seventh / Séptimo

Suddenly, the horse appeared. He did not know it, but he had not come alone. The Snake had curled up around one of his legs to ride to the meeting. When the horse was about to gallop ashore, the Snake broke loose. The Horse was startled and drew back and the Snake arrived sixth. The Horse had to accept the seventh place.

Eighth / Octava

Ninth / Noveno

Tenth / Décimo

Eighth, ninth and tenth were the Sheep, the Monkey and the Rooster. They had teamed up and with their joint efforts found a raft and managed to make it reach the other side of the river.

Eleventh / Onceavo

And then the Dog showed up. He was the best swimmer of all and everyone had thought he would get there first but he had stopped to play several times on his way. His was therefore the next to last place.

And then a little pig appeared, asking if there was anything to eat. He was very tired and fell asleep as soon as he had fed, but not before he cheerfully accepted the twelfth and last place in the zodiac.

Only then did the Cat arrive, but there were no years left for him to give his name to. The Cat swore he would always hate and worry the Rat for having cheated him out of winning the race and leaving him out of the calendar, and so he does till this day. And perhaps he walks alone because he thinks there is no justice. Or because the Jade Emperor told him to choose his travelling companions better.

Review the Passive Voice / Repasar la Voz Pasiva

Oraciones Afirmativas:

Active: Charlotte grows roses in her garden.
Subject + main verb + object + rest.

Passive: Roses are grown by Charlotte in her garden.
Subject + be + participle of main verb + by agent + rest.

El agente lleva “by” delante. “By” significa “por.” Pon “by” delante del agente.

PRACTICE:

1. The French produce champagne.

2. Rita writes detective stories.

3. Fred fries potatoes with olive oil.

4. John bakes delicious chocolate cakes for Anne´s teashop.

5. Elizabeth collects money for an NGO.

6. Herbert writes poems about his girlfriend.

7. Somebody opens the door early in the morning.

Eje. Charlotte sends e-mails to Anne.
Emails are sent to Anne by Charlotte.

Anne is sent e-mails (to) by Charlotte.

Queda fatal empezar "Students are cooked..."

PRACTICE:

1. Henry writes letters to Susan.

2. George buys beautiful jewels for Irene.

3. Anna knits sweaters for her grandchildren.

4. An Italian chef cooks lunch for the students at the school cafeteria.

Eje. Activa: They pay him. / Pasiva: He is paid by them.

They pay John. / John is paid by them.

Son: sujeto: I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they. Son objeto: me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them.

1. They gives us enough money to pay for the bus tickets.

2. She reads books to him.

3. We paint pictures of flowers.

4. They tune pianos. (afinan pianos)

6. They gave me a medal.

Ex. The police arrest pickpockets every day.
Pickpockets are arrested every day (by the police).
PRACTICE:

1. They (producers of Cava) produce Cava in Spain.

2. They (Hindu filmmakers) film many movies in Bollywood.

3. They (flamenco singers) sing flamenco in the south of Spain.

Oraciones Negativas:

Ex. Sylvia doesn’t lock the door. / The door isn’t locked by Sylvia.

PRACTICE:

1. Jane doesn´t make our beds.

2. Richard doesn´t fix motorcycles.

3. I don’t take the money to the bank every day.

4. We don’t hide the keys under the doormat.

Oraciones Interrogativas:

Formula Activa: Do/ does + subject + main verb +object + second object (si lo hay)  + rest + ?
Does the school give you a diploma when you graduate?

Formula Pasiva:
Be + sujeto + verbo principal en participio + object (si lo hay) + by + agente + rest.
Passive: Are you given a diploma by the school when you graduate?

PRACTICE:

1. Does the dentist check your teeth once a year?

2. Do they eat rice in China?

3. Does John grow oranges in his orchard?

4. Do vegetarians eat fish?

Active: Question word + do/does + subject + main verb +object + rest +?
When do the maids clean the hotel rooms on Sundays?

Passive
Question word + be (aquí en presente simple) + subject + main verb en participio + by agent + rest +?
Passive: When are the hotel rooms cleaned by the maids on Sunday?

PRACTICE:

1. Where do they grow Basmati rice?

2. When do Christians celebrate Easter?

3. Why does Alice study Swahili?

4. How do you peel pineapples?

Who sings that song?

Pasiva: Question word + be + (object, si lo hay) + participle of main verb + by?
Who is that song sung by?

By whom are the computers fixed in this office?

PRACTICE:

1. Who opens the door in the morning?

2. Who cooks dinner for the children?

3. Who cleans your house?

Activa: Question word + do/does + sujeto + main verb + rest + ?
What do they pack here?

Pasiva: Question word + be + paticiple of main verb + rest +?
What is packed here?

PRACTICE:

1. What does Sam wear when he acts?

2. Who do the doctors examine?

3. Who does John love?

4. What do they cook in this kitchen?

Present Simple: Jane grows roses. Roses are grown by Jane

Past Simple: Jane grew roses. Roses were grown by Jane.

Future Simple: Jane will grow roses. Roses will be grown by Jane.

Be going to: Jane is going to grow roses. / Roses are going to be grown by Jane.

Present Continuous: Jane is growing roses. Roses are being grown by Jane.

Past Continuous: Jane was growing roses. Roses were being grown by Jane.

Present Perfect Simple: Jane has grown roses. Roses have been grown by Jane.

Past Perfect Simple: Jane had grown roses. Roses had been grown by Jane.

Modals: Jane should grow roses. Roses should be grown by Jane.

(Ojo con el modal si lleva “to”, como “ought to,” o “need to” o “have to,” no se te olvide poner ese “to”: Jane ought to grow roses. Roses ought to be grown by Jane.)

(Más ojo todavía con Have To y Need To, hay que tener en cuenta las personas: Jane has to grow roses. Roses have to be grown by Jane. )

Modal Perfects: Jane must have grown roses. Roses must have been grown by Jane.

PRACTICE:

1. Clara is writing novels for teenagers.

2. Sylvia painted a portrait of her child.

3. Elizabeth will bake a lemon pie.

4. This softdrink company recycles glass bottles.

5. Helen wasn’t fixing the computer.

6. Peter had built houses before.

7. Susie should have cleaned the kitchen.

8. I was going to give a party.

9. You should correct the tests first.

10.You have to give us an explanation.

11. They ought to tune the piano.

12. You can grow cactuses in a desert.

13. Ben should have bought a ticket.

14. We could have kept the ice cream in Jane’s fridge.

15. You don’t need to cook sushi.

Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Eos / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Eos

Nauta

I should have come here today with plugs in my ears due to a disturbance in my neighbourhood that has been going on since the Epiphany. But the person who does these illustrations, and those of the Toora Chronicles, is not available, although she did send me the picture that goes with this post.

Eos is the Greek goddess of the dawn. We Romans call her Aurora. Eos appears in the sky every morning in her chariot drawn by her two horses Firebright and Daybright. Yes, in the illustration she has four horses. Somebody must have given the two new ones to her for Christmas.

Eos is preceded only by her son Phosphorus who slowly marches in front of his mother’s chariot carrying a torch with which he lights the planet Venus. Because of this, Phosphorus is called the Morning Star. He has a twin brother called Hesperus who is the Evening Star because he also lights up Venus, but in the evening.

Hesperus and Phosphorus / Héspero y Fósforo

The planet Venus shines more than the stars.

Eos is very popular among poets, who love to sing about her saffron robes and pink fingers and golden sandals and other fancy trappings.

Homer / Omero

When now Aurora… with her rosy luster purpled o’er the lawn…

Soon as the early, rosy-fingered dawn appeared…

Sappho / Safo

In gold sandals Dawn like a thief fell upon me.

If you look closely, you will see that there is yet another in our illustration of the myth of Eos. Can you see the tiny cricket with skin so transparent that it looks like a lifeless shell?

The cricket is Tithonus. Eos fell in love with him when he was a splendid young man. She asked the gods to grant him eternal life so that they could be together forever.

But she forgot to ask for the gift of eternal youth for him. Tithonus would live forever, but he would get older every day.

Eos could not bear to look at him when he was over a hundred, so she turned him into a cricket feeling he would not look as frightful in this guise as he did as a man.

Tithonus / Titono

The woods decay and fall,
The vapours weep their burthen to the ground
Man comes and tills the field and lies beneath,
And after many a summer dies the swan.
Me only cruel immortality
Consumes: I wither slowly in thine arms,
Here at the quiet limit of the world,
A white-haired shadow roaming like a dream
The ever silent spaces of the East,
Far-folded mists, and gleaming hills of morn.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

I made Tithonus say all that and more in my poem “Tithonus.” Do you remember me? I’ve visited this blog before. I participated in a contest of good-looking fellows…

Excepting the drawing of me and our illustration of Eos, Hesperus and the cricketTithonus, we found all the photos in this post on the Internet.

2012 has brought optimism and enthusiasm to Prime and Only Minister Binky's office. He is ready to face the new year with pep and stamina.

This will be my watershed year! I feel it in my papers. I can almost make the victory sign. In fact I will as soon as...

POM Binky
Primer y único ministro Binky

I finish writing down my list of new year's resolutions.

Arley

Is there really so much you need to change, Mr. Binky? Perhaps you should just concentrate on one goal and then maybe it will be easier to reach it. I can help you choose one, and in exchange you can help me make a papier-mâché nativity scene for your office tonight.

Alpin

But what are you doing here, you nitwit? I´ve been searching for you everywhere and look where I find you! Decorating old Binky's dusty office! And I afraid that you might be on a luxury spaceship to Sedna! Listen, Arley, we've very little time left to ask for things. In a few hours the asking period will be over and we´ll be doomed to put up with a year of squalor. Tell me this minute what Santa brought you! I need to know in case you got something I might want for myself too. I'm going to ask the Magi for whatever it is. I don´t want to spend the rest of the year wishing I had something you have.

Arley

Well, the trendy gift this Christmas was the pocket cloak of invisibility. And that's the biggest thing St. Nick brought me. That's why nobody has seen me much anywhere lately. Or anyone else.

Alpin

What a piece of junk! It´s like the yo-yo. Every so many years it becomes trendy again. I´ve got a thousand of those! You aren´t going to say that shitty cloak is your heart's desire, the wish you've been so secretive about and that you weren't able to ask for the Christmas before this past Christmas?

¡Menuda birria!

Arley

Well, no. The cloak isn´t my heart´s desire. You see, my Mum insisted I come home for Christmas and in theory this is lovely, but the truth is that since I've returned I haven't been able to sleep a wink. I think I don't look well and may even have aged some. In fact, nobody sleeps much at home lately. What with the pea factory and my Mum being so annoyed with me because I have nightmares again and it is clear I need to sleep in the car...she says that I don't trust her and her way of doing things but I do try to when I'm awake, it's when I'm asleep that I start screaming and -

Alpin

Hey, you! Hold your horses! I didn't ask you to tell me about your problems. What I want you to tell me is what you are going to ask the Magi for so you can call me a copycat.

Arley

Well...

Pues...

 POM Binky
Primer y Único Ministro Binky

Sorry, kids, but I´ve got to close the ministry. I have an appointment with the ex-pirate Boogerbeard and his doctor. Thanks for decorating my office, little boy. It's been brilliant. Especially the stars you made with the old yellowing papers. I may have a hard time one day if I need to find one of these, but 'tis the season to be jolly.
