Report on Trip to Córdoba / Reportaje sobre el viaje a Córdoba

Last April, 52 students went on a field trip to Córdoba. They were to visit the botanical gardens and the Cathedral-Mosque, and to interview tourists strolling in the city´s streets. If you want to know how the trip turned out, click on Cordoba in Booknosey and read a general report we have made based on many individual reports handed in by students who participated in this project.

School of Iberian Magic / Escuela de Magia Íbera

Yesterday afternoon, Michael Toora was on his way home from his favorite bakery. He was carrying a huge white cardboard box. Within it was a scrumptious birthday cake. When Alpin appeared from out of nowhere and held him up at a crossroads like a vulgar highwayman, Michael assumed it was the cake his cousin was after. But this time Alpin wanted something else. And with some help from his mum, he got what he wanted.

So at a quarter to the witching hour, just as infernal etiquette commands, and on a moonless night, Alpin and Arley were once more standing outside the door to the cave of Salamanca, rumored school of the occult and possibly a gate to hell.

They were accompanied by the five individuals they needed to recruit to be allowed to cross that doorway. So it was quite likely they would get to enter.

Michael

I can´t believe this. I’m going to celebrate my birthday in hell. It´s even worse than any other year. This sort of thing only happens to me.

Alpin

Nonsense! All the people who dwell in hell celebrate their birthdays there. There´s nothing special about this. You´re a drama queen.

Michael

How about if I turn on my heels and leave you here? I´m only here because your mother implored me to accompany you, wailing and fainting. Where do you have the letter of reference your mum wrote to recommend us to the devil?

Arley

I have it in my knapsack. It fell out of Alpin´s bag and I thought it might be safer in mine. It´s got a few ketchup stains on it, and it smells like food from a burger blended with the fascinating night blooming jasmine perfume on Mrs. Dullahan's stationery. But I suppose it will have to do.

Don Quijote

I´m not sure it´s safe to have dealings with the devil, innocent as they may be, like asking for a pencil is. In my time, this was ferociously discouraged. But if you insist on seeing him, lads, we won´t leave your side for a second.

Sancho Panza

I have a feeling this can´t turn out right.

Vinny / Vicentico

I´m awfully scared, but only of being too small to count as the seventh visitor. What if the door won´t open because of me?

Gatocatcha

It will. Your soul is as big as anyone´s, and that is what counts here. But try not to stand too close to me. I might forget what I am about and strike you with my paw if you move. Instinct is dreadfully difficult to control, even for an educated cat like me.

And the door did open. Within the cave, seven students were giving their end of the year projects a finishing touch. In infernal schools, there never are holidays.

Corrupius "Touchy"  Surly / Corrupio Agreste, El Rabietas

What the…? Halt! The new students mustn't come until September Eve.

¿Pero qué...? ¡Alto!

Cupid “Q” Bonnetbee / Cupido Cococomido, El Q

I can´t see a thing from here. Is there anyone hot among the new ones?

No! They’re a motley crew if ever there was one. How did these people get accepted? This class lacks class.

¡No!

Arley

We…we´re not next year´s students. We´re a committee in search of a pencil we´ve been told can be found here.

What? You’ve barged into hell because you´ve misplaced a pencil? Well, I must say that is cheap! I find that admirable. Well done!

There are no pencils here, nuts. We write with blood, sweat, tears and coal. Have you brought some food with you? You smell like burgers.

Aquí no hay lápices, chalados. Nosotros escribimos con sangre, sudor, lágrimas  y carbón. ¿Habéis traído algo de comer? Oléis a burger.

Arley

Sirs, from the amount of graffiti on these walls I would say the pencil we are after just might be here.

Ophidian “Ophy”” Evergreen   / Ofidio  Siempreverde, El Ofi

Now that he´s mentioned it, I remember seeing the class dunce laughing by himself as he stared at a pencil.

Don Quijote

The class dunce? There are dunces in this school?

¿El tonto de la clase? ¿Hay un tonto en esta escuela?

Tanacetum “Tansy” Mandrakecot / Tanaceto Camamandrágoras, El Tani

Maybe there are seven, although only one will end up looking it.

Alpin

Cut the small talk and take us to your dunce.

Menos chachara y llevadnos hasta vuestro tonto.

Corrupius “Touchy” Surly / Corrupio Agreste, El Rabietas

You are the dunce if you can´t tell which of us is, impertinent brat!

¡Tonto eres tú, si no sabes distinguirlo, niñato impertinente!

Gatocatcha

If you´ve used your ears, now use your eyes, Arley. I already know who the dunce is supposed to be.

Si has usado los oídos, ahora usa los ojos, Arley. Yo ya sé a quién llaman tonto.

Arley

All of you here are wearing dunce caps, that is, tall pointed wizard´s hats, except for the gentleman with the bowler. Could it be him?

Tanacetum “Tansy” Mandrakecot / Tanaceto Camamandrágoras, El Tani

I´m not as stupid as they think. Among other things, because I do have the pencil. Want to bargain?

The Nightingale With the Lamp / El ruiseñor con la lámpara

A hospital is not a pleasant place to be at. But there was a time when hospitals were far more unpleasant to be at than they are today. What made them change for the better?

Information for those who can´t quite follow the video about Florence and the Crimean War.
The Crimean War was a conflict between Russia and the Turkish Empire. Turkey was backed by England, France and the Piedmont and Sardinia. The Turkish empire was falling apart and the allies didn´t want Russia to benefit in excess from this.

This war began in 1853 and ended in 1856. It was fought almost entirely in the Crimean peninsula. Nobody really wins wars, but at the end of this one, Russia was most badly off. In this war, in which more civilians died than soldiers, the first war correspondents appeared and more photos were taken than in any previous quarrel. Also, for the first time, women looked after wounded soldiers. This last is what we will learn about here. .

Florence Nightingale was an Englishwoman born in Italy. She was from an influential family although she was Catholic. Since her youth, she was conviced that her calling was to look after the sick. But back then, the sick were looked after at home and hospitals were horrible places nobody wished to be in. Besides, it was considered wrong for women to look after men and boys who were not their relatives. But Florence persisted in her intentions and finally got to do what she wanted to when the Crimean War broke out.

The British soldiers wounded in combat were confined in a place called Scutari. Conditions there were so bad that more soldiers died there than in the battlefield. Florence confronted the men in charge there, who didn´t let her intervene. By sending lots of letters to England describing what was happening she obtained the necessary support to turn that dirty place into what today we would recognize as a military hospital. She also managed to have the women who had travelled with her to Turkey be permitted to care for the wounded. The number of soldiers who managed to survive increased spectacularly.

Lyrics of the song from the video / Letra de la canción del video
Farewell, England, much as we may love thee,
We´ll dry the tears which we have shed before!
Why should we weep and sail in search of fortune?
So farewell, England, farewell for ever more!
Farewell, Scutari, horrible and dirty!
Farewell to rats and bits of dirty hay!
Let´s see the change when Nightingale got working!
Let´s see what happened when Florence got her way!
(¡Adios, Scutari, horrible y sucio!
Cheer, boys, cheer for a most determined lady!
Cheer, girls, cheer for Florence Nightingale!
She led the way for women to be nurses.
All thanks to her we´ve clean hospitals today.
¡Aclamad, muchachas, aclamad, a Florencia Nightingale!
¡Gracias a ella tenemos hospitales limpios hoy!)

There are few things more English than this video.
