Poem for father´s day / Poema para el día del padre

Those Winter Sundays
by Robert E. Hayden

Sundays too my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he’d call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Speaking indifferently to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love’s austere and lonely offices?

y lentamente yo me levantaba y vestía

Michael

I need a miracle, so I´ve come to see St. Patrick at his collegiate church in Lorca, which is closer because it is in Spain.

I´m with the angel of fame, who is now in a square next to the church. He used to be up on the very church. But fame weighs a lot.

Be careful what you ask for. If Curmudgeon learns, I fear you´ll be asked to teach more people. Such is fame.

Ojo con lo que pidas. Si Cascarrabias aprende, me temo que te lloverán alumnos. Así es la fama.

Happy Saint Patrick´s Day!

¡Feliz día de San Patricio!

Working Miracles / Obrando Milagros

Michael Toora

Alright, let´s see if we can do this without wasting paper. Binky has sent me the tests he made you take to get to know if you were capable of learning. But by now I know you well enough to understand that you are.

Curmudgeon

Of course I am. I can copy all those doodles as well as anyone.

Desde luego que lo soy. Puedo copiar esos garabatos y dibujarlos como cualquiera.

Michael

Yes, well, they´re not just doodles. I´m sure your only problem is that you don´t understand why you need to learn. That´s why I want you to see a film about someone who had a similar problem.

Curmudgeon

I know who that is. I´ve seen a film about her and an exorcist. On Mortal TV. Am I possessed by the devil? Will I learn if he goes away?

Michael Toora

No, it´s not that little girl. This little girl is Helen Keller. Helen had a privileged mind but it was isolated from the world because she became deaf and blind when she was a very little baby. The film is about how her teacher made her understand that she could communicate with people and live a much richer, fuller life. Which is also why you want to learn to read and write. Here, take this DVD. You can watch it on Alpin´s TV and DVD combo. He won´t mind. He got it for Christmas but he´s bored with it now.

Curmudgeon

I´ll watch it like a hawk does its prey. I don´t mind watching TV. It´s easy enough for me to stare at that machine because I´ve spent all my life watching treasures. Kept my eyes fixed on them every second, too. I can watch this film without blinking.

Michael Toora

No. No! That´s not what you have to do. You mustn´t watch the film as if it were something someone might want to steal. You won´t be able to concentrate on it if you do that, and you won´t understand it. I want you to get involved in this film. I want you to feel empathy. I want you to feel as if you were Helen and to experience that wonderful moment when she realizes that words have a meaning and that they are used to communicate.

No. ¡No!

Curmudgeon

I don´t understand what you are saying, but I´ll watch the film anyway if you say I have to.

Michael Toora

At least you try to cooperate. This isn´t going to be easy. But if there is something to be learned from Helen´s teacher, Anne Sullivan, it is that one can´t give up too soon. And don´t just look at the film. Listen to it too. People who don´t learn are most often people who don´t know how to listen.

Curmudgeon

I can listen like a scout in a forest.

Michael

Don´t listen for noises that might indicate someone could be creeping up to try and steal the film. Listen to what the actors have to say. To the message they are trying to get across to you. It´s not thieves that matter now. It´s Helen and what her example can do for you.

Alpin

Cousin Michael, are you going to pull Curmudgeon´s hair and slap his face and roll on the floor with him like Anne Sullivan had to do?

Michael

No. I´m going to do something more drastic.

No. Voy a hacer algo más drástico.

Educating Curmudgeon / Educando a Cascarrabias

Leafies

Here comes Binky, merciless herbicide and enemy of free enterprise.

Binky

You call me herbicide because of all the paper I use up, but since when am I an enemy of free enterprise?

Leafy

Since you folded up Basiliska´s business.

Binky

But she was going to charge you for every word you said. Should I have let her do that?

Leafy

Bah! She could never have collected.

¡Bah! Nunca hubiese podido cobrar.

Binky

You do nothing but criticize me. I don´t deserve this! Next time I´ll let Basiliska send her thugs to break your stems.

Leafy

Why are you here stalking us?

¿Por qué estás aquí acosándonos?

Binky

I´m not here to stalk you. I´m stalking Michael Toora. I mean, I´m looking for him. Do you know where he is?

No estoy aquí para acosaros. Estoy acosando a Michael Toora. Es decir, le estoy buscando. ¿Sabéis dónde está?

Leafy

Yes. But we´re not saying until you tell us why you want him.

Binky

Remember how Titania said I had to educate Curmudgeon Finn? Well, I´ve been trying to teach him to read and write for over a month and my conclusion is that this is a task for a professional.

Michael

What? But I´m not a professional! Allow me to remind you I´m under a spell! It´s not vocational!

¿Qué? ¡Pero si yo no soy un profesional! ¡Te recuerdo que estoy bajo un hechizo! ¡No soy vocacional!

Binky

But you´re good! You´ve doing such a great job teaching Mr. Quijano and Mr. Panza that I´m sure you´re the person to teach Curmudgeon.

Michael

Don’t flatter me. A great job? My pupils are the kind that learn by themselves. What you want is to rid yourself of Curmudgeon because you know he can´t be taught at all.

No me des coba.

Binky

No, no, not at all! It´s very easy to teach Curmudgeon. All one needs is a little time. And you have a lot of it. I, instead, am always so busy.

¡No! ¡Qué va! Si es muy fácil enseñar a Cascarrabias. Sólo hay que tener tiempo. Y a ti te sobra. Yo en cambio estoy siempre ocupado.

Michael

Busy? Doing what? Embroiling everybody else´s lives! And now you want to embroil mine! Curmudgeon is your problem! You solve it! What cheek! As if I didn´t have enough being bossed around by Glorvina!

¿Ocupado? ¿En qué? ¡En liarle la vida a todos! ¡Y ahora quieres liármela a mí! Cascarrabias es tu problema. ¡Resuélvelo tú! ¡Vaya geta!

Glorvina

I´m sorry, Mungo John. When I put the spell on Michael I said he had to teach English but I didn´t specify to whom. So that does mean he gets to choose his pupils. Still, I think it´s sad that no one wants to teach poor Curmudgeon.

Alpin

You´re a pack of idlers! It´s not impossible to teach Curmudgeon. I´ll do it! Me, please! Let me teach Curmudgeon! You´ll see how he learns!

¡Sois una panda de gandules! No es imposible educar a Cascarrabias. ¡Lo haré yo! ¡Yo, por favor! ¡Dejadme enseñar a Cascarrabias! ¡Veréis cómo aprende!

Glorvina

Well. It´s very kind of you to want to help him, Alpin. But do you really think you can do this?

Vaya.

Alpin

Eh, Curmudgeon. Why are you looking so down at the mouth? There´s ways fools can learn. And without an effort too. I know three ladies who keep a magic fish. If you eat it, you get to be a genius. Unfortunately, although it is always reborn after being eaten, they are not very generous with it. But that shouldn´t be a problem for you, because you have experience kidnapping people. It should be easy for you to abduct a fish.

Eh, Cascarrabias.

Curmudgeon

Where do I have to go to get hold of it? Will it really turn me into a genius?

¿Dónde tengo que ir para agarrarlo? ¿Realmente me convertirá en un genio?

Alpin

Sure! Into an evil genius.

¡Por supuesto! En un genio del mal.

Woof MacTecla

Woof!

¡Wuf!

MacMor

Help!

¡Socorro!

Luxviminda

Come within a hundred miles of my fish, you rotten egg, and I´ll turn you into an inedible French omelet.

Binky

Not to worry, miss. I´ll issue a restraining order.

Descuide, señorita. Extenderé una orden de alejamiento.

Glorvina

It´s only natural. If you don´t rehabilitate a criminal, he is sure to relapse. Poor man! What a pity!

Es lo natural. Si un criminal no se rehabilita, reincide. ¡Pobre hombre! ¡Qué lástima!

Fergus

Shame on you, Mikey! You are no son of mine! I can understand Binky´s not bothering to rehabilitate Curmudgeon. Binky was born to soil paper! But you – you were smart enough to put Curmudgeon back out on the streets. So you´d better be responsible enough to teach him not to get into further trouble!

¡Vergüenza te debería dar, Mikey! ¡Tú no eres hijo mío!

Michael

Hey, Luxviminda, are your sisters here with you? You see, I want to ask Sabática for a sabbatical year.

Oye, Luxviminda, ¿has venido con tus hermanas?

I can´t grant you one because I´m on one myself.

Michael

I´m going to go live on a desert island.

Me voy a ir a vivir a una isla desierta.

Sancho Panza

I don´t think there are any islands available at all. I´ve been trying for centuries to get hold of one.

Michael Toora

Then I fear I have a new pupil.

Pues entonces me temo que tengo alumno nuevo.

Binky

Don´t forget to prepare a personal curriculum for him. Let´s do things right from the start.

Leafies

Binky herbicide! Binky press-ganger!

¡Binky herbicida! ¡Binky Capitán Araña!

Binky

To be just, Glorvina is very ecological but a press-ganger too!

Seamos justos.

In England, press gangs like the one in the caricature above went from one place to another forcing men to enlist in the army or the navy. If you were unfortunate enough to meet one, you could end up in a war on the other side of the ocean. In Spain, a man known as Captain Araña sent a great many men to confront freedom-fighters in the colonies. When the time came for him to board one of the boats, he disappeared without a trace. What became of this man is one of the mysteries of history.
