Goblin Market Revisited / Retorno al Mercado de los Goblins

Part One - At Christina´s house / Primera Parte - En casa de Cristina.

Christina Georgina Rossetti

Alpin, I invited you to my house because your sisters have asked me to speak with you.

Alpin

You are English. Why is your family name Rossetti?

Eres inglesa. ¿Por qué te apellidas Rossetti?

Christina

My father was an immigrant. He came to England from Italy. There have always been immigrants. Some years ago I wrote a tale in verse for children about Goblin Market. You have the full version in the library in your house, but to encourage you to read it, I´m going to tell you what it is about.

Alpin

Is it necessary?

¿Es necesario?

Christina

Yes. You can´t buy compulsively in Goblin Market. What you buy there is no more and no less than your own personality. Before you buy, you have to know what kind of a person you want to be. That´s why they shouldn´t sell to minors. First, you have to learn what kinds of persons there are. That takes time. Later, you must choose what kind of person you want to be. That is your right.

Alpin

I only bought some colourful mushrooms that were yukky. Listen, aren´t you going to offer me anything to eat? I´m a guest, it´s only manners.

Christina

If you want to have tea, first you have to listen to my story.

Si quieres merendar, primero tienes que escuchar mi cuento.

Alpin

Make it short.

Que sea corto.

Christina

Once upon a time there were two sisters, Laura and Lizzie. Every evening they would fetch water from a stream, and each night they would hear the cries of the Goblin merchants, who sold a great variety of stange and mysterious fruits.

One evening, being alone by the stream, Lizzie bought fruit from the goblin men, paying for it with a lock of her hair. When she ate it, she fell into a frenzy. When she came to her senses, she went home taking a seed of the fruit with her.

When she told her sister what she had done, Lizzie was very upset. She reminded Laura of a friend of theirs called Jeanie, who had eaten of this fruit and who died when winter came after a period of mental and physical deterioration.

Soon the girls learned that Laura could no longer hear the voices of the goblins, although Lizzie still could. Laura fell into a depression. One day she remembered she had the seed and planted it. But it didn´t grow.

The winter was coming and Lizzie was so worried about her sister, who seemed to be about to die, that she went to see the Goblin merchants.

At first, the Goblins seemed to be friendly, but when she told them she wanted to pay with money, their attitude began to change.

Lizzie wanted to take the fruit she bought home with her, but the goblins didn´t want her to do that. They wanted her to eat it in front of them.

When she refused, they attacked her, trying to force her to eat the fruit. In the stuggle, they stained her all over with the juice and the pulp of the fruit.

Lizzie fled home, where she advised her sister to eat what was left of the smashed fruit. Laura did this and was cured. Both lived to tell their grandchildren the story of the goblin market and the power of fraternal love.

Alpin

This story made me hungry.

Este cuento me ha dado hambre.

Cristina

We can have tea and scones. Some have raisins and some don´t.

Podemos tomar té con scouns. Algunos tienen pasas y otros no.

Alpin

I want the ones with raisins and the other ones too.

Cristina

Relax. There are one hundred and thirty five.

Tranquilo. Hay ciento treinta y cinco.

I wrote this story for several reasons. What they sell at Goblin market is not always the same for all of us. I want to tell you about two kinds of products they tried to sell me. In my time women had very few ways to earn a living. If they didn´t find a husband that would support them they could choose between working in conditions that were practically slavery or becoming prostitutes, sometimes also in conditions close to slavery.

Women who chose the second option were despised by the same people who had used them and pushed them to do this. This is called social hypocrisy. I tried to help these women. Many peole insulted me for doing this, for dealing with these women, for learning about life from them and for writing strange things. I couldn´t care less. I was an adult and I knew who I was. Nobody had to tell me that.

Me dio igual.

The other fruit I am familiar with has to do with another social problem.

Look. These two are my brother, Dante Gabriel, and my sister-in-law, Elizabeth Siddall.

Mira.

She was a very beautiful woman, a model of the kind that was popular in my time. These kind of women were the ideal of a group of painters of the period who were called preraphaelites. My brother was one of them and he and his friends painted Elizabeth many times. In a way, she had everything, except health.

In my day, a thing called laudanum - it was legal- was sold everywhere. It was made from opium and it was a drug. Many people turned to laudanum the minute they had a problem.

A simple toothache could end up turning you into a drug addict. And not everyone found peace being one. Many people felt worse.

It is true that back then medicine hadn´t advanced much and most people could only turn to remedies like these to releive their aches and pains, some very serious. These only helped at first. Later, they gave way to new problems.

The thing is my sister-in-law died of an overdose after having given birth to a dead baby girl.

My brother, Dante Gabriel, was utterly grief-stricken. He buried all the poems he had written - he was also a poet - with Lizzie. Years later, he was persuaded to exhume them. Many people criticized him for doing this, and he was never the same after that. But that is another story.

What I mean to say is that things don´t affect everybody the same way. People who have the chance to help other people who have problems should be brave and do it. And those who have the chance to receive help should accept it without feeling ashamed. These things happen to everybody. I don´t know if I´ve made myself clear.

Alpin

Is there anything else to eat?

¿Hay algo más de comer?

Cristina

I think there is bread and butter and jam in the kitchen. Look, I didn´t always get along well with my sister-in-law. Nor with my brother. I´m going to show you a drawing my brother did of me on a day when I threw a tantrum. But deep down I loved them.

Alpin

Where are my sisters?

¿Dónde están mis hermanas?

Christina
They had something very important to do. Soon they will come to fetch you. Meanwhile, we can browse through my gallery of preraphaelite paintings.

Tenían algo muy importante que hacer. Pronto vendrán a recogerte.

Part Two - At the Fairgrounds / Segunda Parte - En el Recinto Ferial

Fiona

There´s nobody here.

Aqui no hay nadie.

Branna

We´ve arrived early. They´ll come. Every Tuesday afternoon they set up a fleamarket here.

Hemos llegado temprano.

Fiona
I´m glad we came ourselves. I hate to think what our father or Darcy would do if they knew about what they did to Alpin. They are so rash.

No tienen medida.

Branna

But we must be very careful. Goblins know a lot about other people´s weaknesses. And they can be very dangerous.

Fiona

Since Alpin ate everything there was at home, there was nothing left for us. We had to become vampires to survive. But every cloud has a silver lining. Now we are very tough. Tough as army boots.

Branna

They are here.

Ya están aquí.

Fiona

Hey. you! Which of you sold a minor some mushrooms from Minced Forest?

¡Eh, vosotros!

Goblin

What are you talking about? We don´t know anything about that.

¿De que hablas? Nosotros no sabemos nada de eso.

Branna

Look here, we´ve come to warn you that you´d better not mess around with our brother.

Goblin

Your brother is a changeling, sweetheart. He isn´t just a born consumer. He´s cannon fodder for vendors. There´s no changing him. Why don´t you forget about him and buy something pretty for yourselves?

Fiona

It remains to be seen if he can be changed or not. Keep away from him.

Goblin 3

And if not, what are you going to do? Bite us? Do it, wilting blondie. We´re dying for it.

¿Y si no que vais a hacer? ¿Mordernos? Hazlo, rubita desvaída. Si estamos deseando.

Branna

We´re not going to fall into that trap. It´s your boss we´re going to bite. Do you think we don´t know you are full of s***? But your boss surely isn´t. He´s sure to take good care not to take the fruit he sells.

Goblin

I´m going to bite you!

Yo voy a morderte a ti.

Fiona

¡Take that!

¡Toma zapatazo!

Branna

Run, Fiona!

¡Corre, Fiona!

Goblin

¡Stop, thief! She´s stolen a shoe!

¡A la ladrona! ¡Se lleva un zapato!

Universal Swot Day / Día Universal de los Empollones

Swots of the Universe unite!
With soles and souls uplifted climb the Idan Height,
And proclaim to all that learning is our right!

We deserve to have our own day and in this blog we´re going to have it. Those of us who found out about this in time have voted, and the result is, Pico della Mirandola´s birthday, which is February 24, is from today Universal Swot Day. Hail, Swots! Hail, Pico! Way to go, intellectuals.

Those of you who have only recently decided to become swots may not know who Pico is.
Well you won´t go to bed tonight without having learnt something new.

Pico was a guy who was born about a thousand five hundred years ago,
And there was nothing in the world he didn´t know.

His name was Giovanni Francesco, but people called him the walking encyclopaedia. May he be an example to us all. He wrote the famous "Oration on the Dignity of Man, " which is considred the Manifesto of the Renaissance. That was after the Dark Ages.

May everyone who stumbles in the darkness of ignorance finally see the light in the path of Swots.

Incident at Minced Forest / Movida en el Bosque Triturado

Michael

I went to the late Bob Marley´s posthumous birthday dinner at Mrs. Moon´s place in New Orelans and when I got back, all hell had broken loose in my blog. First, tell me what happened with Alpin.

Fiona

Alpin, tell us what happend one more time.

Alpin

I was playing with some friends in my garden when I heard a voice beckoning me.

Michael

What voice? Whose voice?

¿Qué voz? ¿De quién era?

Alpin

I don´t know. I was in a haze. I don´t remember a thing. I heard a voice beckoning me. That´s it.

No lo sé. Estaba como en una nube. No recuerdo nada. Oí una voz que me llamaba. Eso es todo.

Michael

Did it call you by name? Was it someone who knew your name?

¿Te llamó por tu nombre? ¿Era alguien que sabía tu nombre?

Alpin

No. It said something like: "Come here, kid. It´s Goblin Market time."

Fiona

Oh, no!

¡Oh no!

Branna

Goblin Market is one of the most frightening places in the world. It´s dangerous to listen to its voices.

Alpin

You should have told me before.

Debisteis decírmelo antes.

Fiona

Yes, we should have. But we didn´t want to frighten you. In cases like this, one doesn´t know what is best. What happened after that?

Alpin

The voice said there were very special goodies waiting for me in the forest. So I entered the woods. And I don´t remember anything except that I got very dizzy and began seeing things and then I got very sick. I think I threw up everything I´d ever eaten in my life. And then Fiona found me.

Y entonces Fiona me encontró.

Fiona

He was sitting under a tree vomiting. He´s never done that before. Never once in his life. He said something about some elves, so I looked about and sure enough, there were elves surrounding us. I couldn´t see them a first. I had to look really close because they were so tiny. They were like part of the vegetation and could hardly be distinguished.

Alpin

They´re a bunch of shits.

Son un atajo de mierdas.

Michael

Hey! You can´t speak like that in my blog.

¡Eh! No puedes hablar así en mi blog.

Branna

Alpin, you ate their houses. They had a right to be angry.

Alpin, te zampaste sus hogares. Tenían derecho a estar enfadados.

Leafies

Listen here, brat. How would you like it if somebody ate your house? Maybe we are vengeful, but if somebody eats our homes, that somebody pays.

Michael

The voice that beckoned Aplin wasn´t yours, was it? Because if you offered him goodies-

Leafies

Certainly not. We´re sick and tired of jerks who come to our forest thinking they are going to have so much fun eating our mushrooms, thinking they are going to see the elves and yes, they do see us, because we let them draw us out. But when they find they can´t stop seeing us, it isn´t such fun anymore. Because if you eat you pay. And if we lose our houses, we move into your brain. And if it happens to be empty, you wil never be able to kick us out. And you can´t begin to imagine what we can do in there. ¡Pity the emptyheaded! The least one can do is ask for permission if one means to eat someone else´s home. We´re thinking of authorizing only people with a doctorate in anthropology.

Alpin

I´ve eaten mushrooms before and nothing happened to me.

He comido hongos antes y no me ha sucedido nada.

Leafies

Not our kind of mushrooms. Not our homes. You ate the kind expert mycologists hunt for.

No nuestra clase de hongos. No nuestros hogares.

Michael

There´s something that doesn´t fit in. Alpin never eats something he has to take for himself. He only screams for others to give him things to eat and swallows what they give him so he will shut up.

Leafies

Well, it wasn´t us. And all we want is for him to pay.

Alpin

I already paid.

Ya he pagado.

Leafy

And you´d have to pay even more if we hadn´t made a deal with Glorvina.

Glorvina

This forest is badly in need of a caretaker. Some things happen here that shouldn´t be happening anywhere. I know forests should be scary, that´s part of their charm. But one thing is being scared and another is being harmed. And it´s not just what happens here, it´s what happens outside. There are those who threaten to cut it down because it´s a dangerous place. But the ones that shout the most, aren´t scared at all. They only want to make money out of this. Sell the wood, sell the land. I promised the Leafies I would protect their wee homes if they forgave Alpin. And I mean to do it.

Leafy

You´d better.

Más te vale.

Glorvina

It won´t be easy. I went to see Titania, the queen of the fairies, to ask her for help. She told me she couldn´t do anything because this forest is in the territory of her husband Oberon. And they aren´t speaking to each other.

Michael

All they do is fight. And they think they know everything.

Titania

I am Titania, queen of the fairies. My husband Oberon is so annoying. He wants everything I have. And if I don´t give it to him, he does mean things to me.

Oberon

I´m Oberon, king of the fairies. I´m not annoying. She is. She´s also selfish. But I´m magnanimous. I sent that woman who went to see my wife before she came to me to see Mungo Binky. He´s the person who deals with all the boring things in my life. What good is it to be king if I have to do boring things all the time? And now I´m leaving. I´ve been here long enough. Puck, prepare my chariot. I´m going to Nausica´s blog to try on a cape Lukinotakis has designed for me.

No soy molesto.

Puck

A spider´s web or a snake´s skin are clothes enough for a fairy.

Titania

Shakespeare must have said that. But what nonsense your coachman repeats, Oberon.I´m going to Lukinotakis´s boutique too. And I´m going to get there before you do because my coachman, Darcy, is better than yours. And handsomer than yours. And than you too, Oberon.

Glorvina

Can you see what is happening here? Now comes the best part. I went to see Mungo Binky and I stated my name and business.

¿Veis el panorama? Ahora viene lo mejor. Fui a ver a Mungo Binky y le comuniqué mi nombre y mis intenciones.

Mungo Binky

I´m Mungo Binky. I´m accessible. I know how to listen. And I tell you what you have to do. I told Glorvina that if she wanted to plant trees, she had to send me a written project. Not a very long one. I´m a busy man. Of course, in it, you have to state your first name. And your middle name. And your last name. And if you have any other names, aliases or pennames, you´d better state them too. You have to state your age and address and if you mean to leave the country this year. And you have to say who your father was and who your mother was, and tell me who are the important people in your life and if you have sponsors, so I will know who I am dealing with. And you must add a list of your titles, noble or academic, if you have any. Or I won´t know who I am dealing with. And you must tell me where you´ve studied, if you´ve studied. And I want to know your marks. Were you popular at school? And if you´ve published, and what you´ve published. I need to know how you think or I´ll suspect you can´t be trusted. And once I know who you are, you can tell me your intentions. And when you do this, carefully number and explain all your objectives - there must be at least nine. And then you must tell me who else is in all this with you and give me their names and etc., so I will know who I am dealing with. And don´t forget to tell me how you mean to evaluate if what we will do - if we decide to do it - was well done and worth doing. And don´t forget to tell me how long it will take you to plant the trees and where you want to plant them and what kind of trees you want to plant and -

Soy Mungo Binky. Soy accessible. Y debes decirme dónde has estudiado, si es que has estudiado. Y tus notas. ¿Eras popular en la escuela? Y si has publicado, y lo que has publicado.

Glorvina

I don´t want to plant trees. I want to protect a forest.

No quiero plantar árboles. Quiero proteger un bosque.

Mungo Binky

Ah. I thought you said... Didn´t you say....? I´m sure you said... Well, if it´s trees you want to save, aside from the above, you must fill in a 10 page form for every tree, minutely describing each and every tree, the number of its leave and-

Ah. Creí que dijiste... ¿Acaso no dijiste...?

Glorvina

I want to protect a forest.

Quiero proteger un bosque.

Then you´ll need a lot of forms. Because it´s not just the treees you have to describe and document. It´s every little bit of vegetation, down to the last blade of grass. They are all equally important to me. And once you fill them in, don´t forget that you have to send me a doctor´s certificate for each and every tree, bit of vegetation, blade of grass, etc., stating whether they are healthy or not. Or I won´t know how to save them. And don´t think you can fool me, because I will send a vegetable doctor to confirm that the certificates record the truth.

Michael

A vegetable doctor? You mean a botanist?

¿Un médico vegetal? ¿Quiere decir un botánico?

Mungo Binky

The person qualified to judge the vegetation, aside from complying with 48 other requisites, must be both a doctor in medicine and a botanist.

Michael

Where do you find people like that?

¿Donde encuentra usted gente así?

Mungo Binky

Actually, we haven´t found anyone yet. But I´m sure we will as soon as we announce we are offering employment for vegetable doctors. We ´ll pin 2,000 ads on trees everywhere and word of mouth should do the rest. And if it doesn´t, we´ll print more ads and pin them on more trees and eventually I´m sure that candidates will show up or it isn´t true that there´s a a lot of unemployment. Of course, fairies are famous for being lazy. But I don´t believe they are. So, I´m sure -

Glorvina

Michael, ask him where the paper for the projects and the forms and the ads is going to come from. I´m going to cover my ears. I don´t want to hear this.

No quiero oírlo.

Mungo Binky

It´s no secret. We´re transparent. We´ll cut down all the trees we need and make the paper with them. Where did you think we would get the paper, eh?

No es ningún secreto. Somos transparentes.

Glorvina

Mungo Binky, you´re a herbicide!

¡Mungo Binky, eres un herbicida!

Mungo Binky

With that attitude we won´t get anywhere, Glorvina.

Con esa actitud no vamos a arreglar nada, Glorvina.

Glorvina

¿Attitude? Your attitude. Mungo Binky, you´re a fussbudget. I could fix this in a twinkling!

¿Actitud?

Mungo Binky

Don´t you dare to shout. You can only shout for the Irish and the Scottish. And I´m neither Irish nor Scottish. I know the rules.

Michael

You had to be English.

Inglés tenías que ser.

Mungo Binky

I´m not English. I´m a citizen of the world. Of the bureaucratic world, of course.

No soy inglés. Soy ciudadano del mundo. Del mundo burocrático, por supuesto.

Michael

What are we going to do with Mungo Binky?

¿Qué vamos a hacer con Mungo Binky?

Alpin

Give him...a mushroom.

Que le den...un hongo.

Leafies

What if we give him three?

¿Y si le damos tres?

Mungo Binky

This job requires such patience! How ungrateful people are.

Kevin

What nobody knows is that I recommended Mungo for this job. I´m so mean and so funny.
