Ya sabes que was es para la primera singular y para la tercera singular (I, he, she, it) y were para todo lo demás (you, we, you, they).

Examples: I was sleeping. / Yo estaba durmiendo.

She was dancing. / Ella estaba bailando.

We were eating ice-cream. / Estábamos comiendo helado.

You were talking on the phone.

Dedícate a escuchar.

Examples: I was not sleeping. / Yo no estaba durmiendo.
She wasn’t dancing. / Ella no estaba bailando.
We weren’t eating ice-cream. / No estábamos comiendo helado.
You were not talking on the phone. / Tú no estabas hablando por teléfono.

PRACTICE:
1. They _______________ (have) breakfast.
2. He ___________ (visit) his aunt.
3. I ____________ (fix) the computer.
4. Sarah _____________(not listen) to the radio.
5. Pat and Mike _____________(not play) tennis.
6. The neighbors _____________(make) a lot of noise.
7. The students _____________(take) notes.
8. Nobody ____________ (use) the toilet.
9. They _____________(not copy) the answers.
10. She _____________ (not drive) too fast.
11. Ralph told the truth. He _______________ (not lie).
12. Georgia ______________ (call) all her friends.
13. It ______________ (not begin) to rain.
14. Mr. Jolly ____________ (write) a letter.
15. The children ______ (mix)colors to paint Easter eggs. (huevos de pascua)
16. Sherman _________ (jog) in the park.

Verbo auxiliar (was/were) + sujeto+ verbo principal con ing + resto+?
Ejes. Were + you + dancing + with Peter+?
Was+ Lena+ playing + the piano+?
PRACTICE:
1.
Yes, they were sitting outside.
2.
No, we weren’t playing badminton.
3.
Yes, Cotito was flying to Japan.
4.
No, I wasn’t reading the telegram.
5.
Yes, Angus was playing his bagpipe. (gaita)
6.
No, nobody was living in that house.
7.
Yes, Eliezer was buying milk at the supermarket.
8.
No, you weren´t sleeping.

Palabra pregunta + verbo auxiliar (was/were) + verbo principal con ing + resto+?
Ejes. Where + were + you + sitting+?
When + was + she + talking + on the telephone + ?
Why + was + the boy + crying + ?

Who + verbo auxiliar (was/were) + verbo principal + resto + ?
Ejes. Who + was + playing + the saxophone last night +?
Who + were + fighting + in the street?

What + (was/were) + sujeto + doing + resto +?
Ejes. What were  you doing in the theatre? I was waiting for an actress. She is my friend.
¿Qué estabas haciendo en el teatro? Estaba esperando a una actriz. Es mi amiga.
What was she doing before she came here? She was swimming. See, her hair is wet.
¿Qué estaba haciendo ella antes de venir aquí? Estaba nadando. Mira, su pelo está mojado.

PRACTICE:
1.
John was cleaning the garage.
2.
John was cleaning the garage.
3.
John was cleaning the garage.
4.
The children were going to the park.
5.
Margaret was washing her clothes.
6.
Emma and Pam were sleeping at a friend’s house.
7.
They were cutting the grass because it was very tall.
8.
They were cutting the grass with a lawnmower.

A) Con la preposición al final: What were they cutting the grass with?
With what were they cutting the grass?

(Incomplete action in progress at a specific time in the past.)
Eje: At midnight, I was sleeping. / A medianoche, yo estaba durmiendo.
(Incomplete action in the past interrupted by another action.)
Ex. I was washing my hair when the phone rang.
(Two incomplete actions happening at the same time in the past.)
She was dancing while he was playing the fiddle.

Sobre while y when sólo vamos a añadir que when suele ir seguido del pasado simple y while del pasado continuo. Pero puede no ser así.

Y vamos a decir que adverbios como always, only, just, still, already, etc., pueden ir entre los dos verbos del presente continuo.
Por ejemplo: He was just joking. / Él sólo estaba bromeando.
They were always eating.

Sancho

Doesn't the past simple seem to be shorter than the past continuous?

Don Quijote

Maybe that´s because the past continuous shows the process and the past simple the finished product.

PRACTICE:
1. Margaret wasn't at home yesterday morning. She ______________ (shop) in the new mall. (mall - centro comercial).
2. We _______________ (fix) the roof when it caved in. (cave in - hundirse hacia dentro).

7.- 8. Of course I passed the test and you didn´t. While I _____________(study) for the test, you _____________ (dance) at a disco.
9.- 10. Patrick ______________ (drive) too fast when he __________ (have) the accident.
11. - 12. You _____________ (eat) so fast that you almost __________ (choke). (atragantarse)
13. Lenor ______ already __________ (have) the baby when the ambulance arrived.

15. Louise ________ still _________ (work) when John came to fetch her. (fetch-recoger).
16.  They _______ still ________ (argue) when we returned. (argue-discutir)
17.-18. Adalbert _____________ (feed) us when we ___________ (starve). (feed - alimentar, starve - morir de hambre).

PRACTICE: My friends and I________________ (watch) a horror film last night. While we_____________ (watch) the film, we _____ also _______(eat) pizza and _____________(drink) coke. Suddenly, the doorbell (ring). I ______________ (go) to the door and ______________ (open) it and looked outside. There ___________ (be) nobody there. I ___________ (return) to the sofa where we _______________ (sit). Then, we ______________ (hear) a noise. Somebody ______________ (tap) at the window. I ____________ (draw) back the curtains but I couldn’t see anybody outside. My friends and I ________________ (begin) to feel frightened. Then we heard another noise. Somebody _______________ (scratch) the door. I was scared, but I ____________ (open) the door again. Out there was the pizza delivery boy. He only ______________ (want) to give us the new menu.

Nauta's Mini Mythology: Lucina Eileithyia / Mini Mitología de Nauta: Lucina Ilitía

Nauta

It is almost a month since the new year first saw the light. And our post today is about a goddess who helps those about to be born to come out into the light. Be it natural or artificial light.

The Greeks call her Eileithyia. We Romans call her Lucina. Lucina is much easier for me to say and perhaps for you to remember, so I will call her that from now on. Also, I think it´s prettuer. But I may be prejudiced because I am Roman.

Well, yes. Lucina does just that. She is the celestial midwife. She helps both immortal and mortal children to be born. Lucina´s flower is the lotus flower and she lives in a lotus tree grove in Mount Esquiline, which is one of the seven hills of ancient Rome.

Can you guess what her favorite animal is? That´s right. It´s the ladybug, also known as the ladybird.

¿Puedes adivinar cuál es su animal favorito? Correcto.

Ladybugs are also popular among gardeners that grow roses, because they eat up other insects that attack these flowers. They also protect other plants and it is a good idea to have a few in your garden. They will also add joy and colour to it.  Ladybugs are a symbol of trust, because they walk calm and unafraid all over people's hands and arms instead of flying away from humans. The goddess Lucina punishes anyone who harms ladybugs during at least nine days.

We found the images of the ladybug and of the seven hills of Rome on Images from the Internet.

Palabra pregunta + verbo auxiliar do/does + sujeto + verbo principal +resto+?
Eje. Where does Elsa study German?

1.
The children go to bed at nine o’clock p.m.

2.
Mary visits her grandfather every day because he lives near her house.

3.
I keep the money in the bank. / Guardo mi dinero en el banco.

4.
We cook the fish with curry. / Cocinamos el pescado con curry.

5.
Rita plants violets in her garden. / Rita planta violetas en su jardín.

6.
Alfred knows many people in New York.

Palabra pregunta + verbo principal + resto +?
Who plays tennis with Robert?

PRACTICE:
1.
Lydia makes the beds. / Lydia hace las camas.

2.
Mrs. Bauer teaches German. / La Señora Bauer enseña alemán.

3.
Mr. Wu cooks the food in this restaurant.

4.
John and Steffi work for Mr. Knowles.

5.
Duncan flies to Scotland every weekend.

6.
The boys clean their rooms.

Who does Tracy play tennis with? / With whom does Tracy play tennis?

PRACTICE:

1.

2.

Paula lives with her parents. / Paula vive con sus padres.

3.

4.

John gives the flowers to Martha. / Juan le da las flores a Marta.

5.

6.

I vote for the Democrats.

What do you open tins with? / With what do you open tins?

PRACTICE:

1.
2.
She makes the cookies with peanut butter. / Hace las galletas con mantequilla de maní.

3.
4.
The children paint with felt pens. / Los niños pintan con rotuladores.

5.
6.
I write about Africa.

Siempre do, nunca does. Mira estos ejemplos.
What do you do on Saturday mornings? / ¿Qué haces los sábados por la mañana? I play basketball. / Juego al basketball.
What does she do on Friday evenings? She goes to a disco.

PRACTICE:

1.
Gino works in a supermarket to earn a living.

2.

3.

How to Form the Present Simple Affirmative / Cómo formar la afirmativa del presente simple en inglés

I dance. / Yo bailo.                  We dance. / Nosotros bailamos.
You dance. / Tú bailas            You dance. / Vosotros bailais.
He dances. / Él baila.               They dance. / Ellos bailan.
She dances. / Ella baila.          They dance. / Ellas bailan.
It dances/ Lo neutro baila.      They dance.
1. I __________ (play) badminton.       6. Susan _______ (cook)  well.

4. You _________ (drink) tea.        9. Anne and her sister _______(live) here.
5. They _________ (sleep) early.           10. The dog _________(bark).
0.  She watches  (watch) TV.  / Ella ve la tele.
1. Rose _______ (brush) her hair. / Rosa se cepilla el pelo.
2. Peter _______ (kiss) his wife. / Pedro besa a su mujer.

5. Johann  _________ (waltz) beautifully.  / Johann baila el vals muy bien.
6. Mía _________(go) to school.
0. Paula studies French. / Paula estudia francés.
1.  He ________ (muddy) the floor. / El mancha el suelo de lodo.
2. The bird ________ (fly) high.  / El pájaro vuela alto.

How the check affair ended / Cómo terminó el asunto del cheque

Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Hello. I´m here to tell you how everything went after the Dark Man’s phone call. As you know, Darcy asked my Mum to see if I was still around, and she went to the window and saw I was and called out and I heard her.  I returned home to see what she wanted and she put me on the phone with Darcy. I didn’t want to tell him I had the check, because I didn’t trust him, but, of course, I had to because nobody can say no to the Dark Man.

Hola.

He told me not to move from where I was and to close the doors and windows and draw the blinds and wait. He would hang up and come for the check immediately, which, he assured me would be safe with him. I did as he asked and  my Mum and I sat on the sofa and waited for Darcy and I explained to her what was happening and she got scared someone might arrive before Darcy and steal the check, so she put it in a heatproof  glass container and burnt it in there. She said she would show Darcy the ashes and ask him to ask her if she had really burnt the Magi´s blank check. He would believe her when she answered yes, because you can’t lie to the Dark Man if he asks you to tell the truth. All this took about seven minutes and Darcy arrived in eight, breaking a record.

He immediately called the Three Wise Men, who were already mounting their camels, to tell them the check had been found and destroyed. They were very happy to hear that, because for the first time in their lives they had used a credit card to be able to ride out that night and they weren’t too happy about it. They were given a credit card because word had gotten around that Darcy himself was out there looking for the check and it was ten to one the Dark Man would find it. Ernest, Death’s Coachman, had told the Magi that as long as they had credit they could ride, but if they should ever have to make good an abusive blank check, the only ride they would go on would be in his carriage.

The Wise Men wanted to know where the check had been all this time and Darcy told them all about me. They were so pleased with me that they promised to send me a King Cake with a very special little figure in it every single morning from this Epiphany on to Eternity. They said they would keep sending me one forever even if they were eventually forced to move away from the world of mortals.

I told my Mum that every morning would be the Epiphany for us from that day on, and that we would always have hot chocolate and King Cake for breakfast and that she would always find the little figure and be crowned queen and I would always find the bean because I could afford to provide the next cake since I was to have one free every day. Darcy wanted to reward me too for having made his job easy for him and I asked Darcy to ask my Mum to stay awake from eight in the morning till noon every day at least and she had to promise she would. So now I´m not scared she might just never wake up again one day, or turn into a little baby from so much resting.

Happy Epiphany!

¡Feliz día de Reyes!

Snowfall / Nevada

Knickknack Nimbus continues to meditate while pretending to be a gargoyle in his garden, now under falling snow.

Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Let´s face it. I’m not good at what I do. I have a handicap. I can only steal in places where there aren’t any knick-knacks. If I were to dig a tunnel to enter a bank, once I was in I would notice the trinkets on the desk of one of the employees, see one I love and forget everything else and flee from the spot with it in my pocket before someone could stop me and take it from me.

So it turns out I hit the jackpot this summer when I filched the leprechaun. And what the deuce can someone like me do with a prize like that? What a mess I’ve put my foot into with this kind of jackpot! Well, I’m small and insignificant and shorter than the hobbit who made it to the chasm where he had to throw the ring, so maybe I can get to the Magi without being noticed. I don’t know those people, but I don’t wish them any harm. And I want to return the check. Yes, I need to get there before they get robbed. Because I certainly haven’t robbed them.

Baby, come inside. It has to be awfully cold out there. I want some tea.

Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Your tea is waiting for you on a tray on the coffee table in front of the sofa in the TV room, Mum. I also made you egg and mustard sandwiches. Get up and walk a bit and go downstairs. Don’t go back to sleep after having your tea. Lie on the couch and watch TV a while. You´re not getting prettier from sleeping anymore. You´re getting to look too young. Why, you look like my daughter instead of my mum. Sigh. Sometimes I think you sleep so much because you don’t want to look like me.

You know all I really like to do is sleep.

 Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

That´s not entirely true. You show some interest when I bring you a new knick-knack, don’t you? Look, Mum, I have to go out for a while. But I promise to be back as soon as I can.

And right then, Darcy got the right number.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!

Mrs. di Lembo / Sra. del Limbo

I have a lovely leprechaun ornament hanging right here on my bedside Christmas tree. Hmmm. I think it was this summer I got it. My son gave it to me. He always gives me cute little knickknacks because he knows I love them. Yes, he lives here, but no, he’s not at home now. He just left. Where did he go? Well, I´m not sure, but I think he went to get me a Twelfth Day of Christmas gift. He always has something for me when he returns home. When I last saw him he was walking towards the East. I think that if I got up and looked out the window I might still see him in the distance. Oh, no! Do I really have to get up?

Pues no estoy segura. ¡Ay, no! ¿De veras tengo que levantarme?

And Mrs. di Lembo did get up, because Darcy had asked her to and she couldn’t say no. And she saw her son still was within shouting distance and he heard her when she called. And the Magi is going out tomorrow whether they get their check back in time or not because they have a credit card and they've put themselves in the hands of God.

More about this another day.

Más sobre esto otro día.

Still Searching / Todavía buscando

Today is the fourth of January and it is already dusk. The dark man is still phoning to see if he can find the person who took the little ornament shaped like a leprechaun that holds the Magi´s blank check within it. Thank heavens phone calls are free in the fairy world. He has already called half the numbers in the fairy phone book. And time after time he has a conversation similar to this one:

"Hello? This is Darcy, the Dark Man, speaking. Please don’t hang up. I’ll be with you in a second. If there is anyone eavesdropping, stop at once. Forget about what has just happened and go to sleep for the rest of the week. Hello? Yes, this is the Dark Man and this is no joke. I need to know if you or someone you know have a little ornament shaped like a leprechaun in your power? Blah, blah, blah. Ok, thank you. Goodbye and happy new year. Carry on with whatever you were doing and forget about this call. Hello? This is Darcy, the Dark Man, speaking. Please don’t hang up, I’ll be with you in a second. Blah, blah, blah…"

"¿Hola? ¿Hola? Darcy, el hombre oscuro, al habla. Por favor no cuelgue. Estaré con usted en un segundo. Blah, blah, blah..."

The person Darcy is looking for is sitting next to the backdoor of his house pretending to be a gargoyle so as not to attract the neighbours' attention.

His house is full of knickknacks.

Su casa está llena de maritatas.

In showcases.

En vitrinas.

On tables.

Sobre mesas.

And more tables.

Y más mesas.

On the walls.

En las paredes.

Hanging from the ceiling.

Colgadas del techo.

In the kitchen.

En la cocina.

On his food.

En su comida.

Christmas knickknacks.

Figuritas navideñas.

Owl knickknacks.

Figuritas de buhos.

Profile / Perfil

The Dark Man is about to darken the door of Minafer Ominous and Gemaniah Worrywart's abode.

Darcy, the Dark Man / Darcy, el hombre oscuro

When you haven’t a clue, consult a medium. Gentlemen, I want you to tell me who has the Magi’s blank check.

If we knew who had it, we would have it. But we were expecting you to call on us. So we’ve prepared a profile of the thief.

We visited the scene of the theft, which is leprechaun Michael Toora’s house, and the vibes there told us that this person is not the average thief, because all he took was a cheap ornament.

Of course, stealing nothing more than the ornament would make sense if he knew that the check was inside it, but we don’t think he knew this at all. If he had known, he would have made use of the check by now.

Though we believe he didn’t know what he was stealing when he took the ornament, we think he does now. Everyone does, so it is reasonable to suppose he does too.

We believe this person is neither important nor powerful in his field and that he doesn’t have what he needs to make the check good. Someone lacking power or contacts would only be robbed of the check if he tried to cash it.

We also feel that this person is a loner, because he hasn’t breathed a word to anyone about the check. You can’t speak about something like that without a leak. So we suggest you look for a loner who isn’t stupid or imprudent and who has a fixation on ornaments. Ah! And it is likely that he lives with his mother.

¡Ah! Y probablemente viva con su madre.

Darcy

Give me a name!

¡Dadme un nombre!

Gemaniah Worrywart / Jemanías, el Ansioso

We´re almost a hundred percent sure his name is in the fairy telephone directory. His mom is probably too old to know how to use a cell phone properly.

If he's not in the pink pages, he might be in the blue. We suggest you phone everyone with a suspicious name. Start with those who own a motel.

Come, Gem! Don’t be prejudiced and make the poor guy look worse than he is till we really know what he's like. You should know better. There are those who consider us rather shady too.

Venga, Jem.

Right. Especially me.

Pues sí, sobre todo a mí.

To sell or not to sell / Vender o no vender

At this time yesterday, Sir Mungo John Binky was strolling through Minced Forest, thinking to himself a sad soliloquy.

P.M. Sir Mungo John Binky / Primer Ministro Sir Mungo John Binky

I'm so unlucky. I hadn't written a letter asking the Magi for gifts since I was seven. The day before yesterday, I thought of writing one to ask for money for my school. It ocurred to me that if they could give a kid a blank check to solve a problem with, surely they could help me with my own problems. The truth is I deserve that school. I've put a lot of hope and effort into this project. So I write this letter...and what happens? The Magi goes bankrupt.

Of course there are ways of raising the money. But I don't know...I´m not sure. The truth is that I don't often come to this forest. I don't feel at home here. Not that it is mine. But I could sell it to the dark siders. There are ways to obtain things. Confiscate, expropriate. I've received interesting offers. If I sell it, the buyers will in turn sell it to the mortals. They will cut down all the trees. They'll use the wood, or maybe not even. And they'll start to build. They love to raise those beehive-like buildings. But what would become of those who live here? Although I know they don't like me, I don't want to do these little people any harm. The truth is they have nowhere decent to go. If I get my school in exchange of this forest, well, something will be gained. I would have sacrificed these people for a good purpose. But will they see it that way? I'd better go.  It's starting to snow and there is a crescent moon, but it doesn't give much light. I can't see very well.

No me siento a gusto aquí. Expropiar, confiscar. He recibido ofertas interesantes. No veo bien.

While Mr. Binky debated on whether to sell or not to sell...

Sir Mungo John Binky, P.M. / Primer Ministro Sir Mungo John Binky

Yaaaaahhh! I'm falling!

¡Ayyyyyyyyy! ¡Qué me caigo!

True. Mr. Binky fell into a hole full of dead leaves and earthworms and some snow. And inside it, he continued debating with himself, although less comfortably.

Sir Mungo John Binky, P.M. / Primer Ministro Sir Mungo John Binky

This could be a trap those little leaf fairies have prepared for me. They haven't the slightest chance in a fight, but they are quite mean and spunky. Well, I was only thinking, but they may have found out. Maybe there is among them one with a gift for reading minds. Or perhaps they hate me for some other reason. How dreadful! Being here must be like being dead. I hate having to do this, but I suppose it will be necessary to shout.

Mr. Binky's cries for help were heard by the Leafies.

Sir Mungo John Binky, P.M. / Primer Ministro Sir Mungo John Binky

Please get me out of this hole. I think I've sprained an ankle. It's beginning to swell.

Sacadme de este agujero, por favor. Creo que me he torcido un tobillo. Se está hinchando.

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

Although we have no reason to like you, we'll haul you out. And you know why? Because it's still the Christmas season. Tonight is New Year's Eve. Where will you dine? We'll take you there.

Sir Mungo John Binky, P.M. / Primer Ministro Sir Mungo John Binky

Why, I...I have no idea. The only place that is still open to the public at this hour today is the hamburger place in Wee Elmira. I could have a salad there. But they might poison it because they hate me since I have the need to have their status as a town revoked because the place is so small. We're settling it in court. Well, I...I think I'll just return to my office.

Leafy Vinny / Vicentico Hojuela

Well, the thing to do is invite a beggar to dinner at Christmas, but this year, at least in a figurative sense, many people have a politician sitting at their dinner table, eating up their festive meals. They weren't invited, but you will be, because I am going to invite you to share my dinner. Do you like acorn purée?

And that night Mr. Binky ate acorn purée and a fine piece of a huge roasted chestnut with red berry sauce. He also made a clever, ambiguous speech about the future and the importance of progress that none of those present understood nor took into account. But he didn't eat the traditional twelve grapes for good luck because the Leafies' budget didn't allow for imported foods.

Once again, Happy New Year!

Una vez más, feliz año!
