You need to know / Necesitas saber

To understand the post below you need to know:

Para entender la entrada anterior necesitas saber:

1. What a wishbone is.

It´s really a chicken or turkey bone. It has the shape of a fork and tradition says that to play the wishbone game two people must each make a wish and then each take hold of one end of the fork and pull. When the bone breaks, the person that gets the longest bit will have his or her wish granted. Click on the word wishbones to learn about them and / or to buy manufactured ones for Thanlsgiving or Christmas. They also make good amulets.

2. Who Achilles is. / Quién es Aquiles.

He is the hero of the ancient Greek epic poem "The Iliad." He was a spoiled and bad tempered young man who was always angry for this or that reason, and used to sulk instead of finding clever solutions to his problems.

The poem is partly about how angry Achilles is for several different reasons, such as because somebody stole one of his girlfriends or because the Trojans have killed his imprudent best friend during the Trojan war. That´s why it is said that the poem is about the wrath of Achilles. Of course, to understand all this you also need to know what wrath means, it means rage or anger.

Because Achilles was supposed to be young and handsome - he never made it to old age because he was so aggressive - Brad Pitt was chosen to play his role in the film "Troy."

The Iliad is attributed to the poet Homer. Nobody knows what he looked like, but people who make busts of him think he looked like this:

Since Homer was believed to be blind, he is sometimes depicted with a guide, usually a little boy. Homer has already visited this blog before.

In Spanish, a blind person´s guide, or even anybody´s guide is often called a Little Lazarus, after the main character of a picaresque novel entitled "Little Lazarus of Tormes." Little Lazarus is not mentioned in the post below, but insisted on appearing in this one and he wants to be featured in another in the future.

The Granite Stone House III - The Wishbone / La casa de granito III - El hueso del deseo

Have I got a house? A granite stone house?

¿Tengo una casa? ¿Una casa de granito?

Arley

Hi, Mrs. Dullahan. Is Alpin at home?

Hola, Señora del Cochero de la Muerte. ¿Está Alpin en casa?

Aislene

Why, it´s Arley! I love this kid. He´s so cute!! Yes, Alpin is at home.

¡Pero si es Arley! ¡Me encanta este niño! ¡Es monísimo! Sí, Alpin está en casa.

Fiona

How could we deny he is home? I´m sure he can be heard screaming a couple of miles off. Did your mum send you to ask us to shut him up because he´s not letting her sleep?

Alpin

Have I got a house? A granite stone house?

¿Tengo una casa? ¿Una casa de granito?

Arley

I´m here because I´ve got a vegetarian wishbone and I want to share it with Alpin. He can choose whichever side of the fork he wants to pull.

Aislene

Did you hear that, Alpin? Isn´t that nice of Arley?

¿Has oído eso, Alpin? ¿No es amable Arley?

Alpin

Do I have a house? A granite stone house?

¿Tengo una casa? ¿Una casa de granito?

Aislene

Why, Arley! Your hands are all stained with blue!

¡Pero, Arley! ¡Si tienes las manos manchadas de azul!

Arley

That´s ink, Mrs. Dullahan. I´ve been writing verses.

He estado escribiendo versos.

Aislene

No! Really? I love poetry! And I adore poets! Have you actually written something or are you still trying to?

¡No!

Arley

I - well, it´s not anything good. But I have what I´ve written here in my pocket. I wish it were uplifting but... it´s just a bit disturbing. I don´t think anyone will like it much. It´s about the fears I feel, and most people don´t want to hear about that. You see, I´ve been advised to exteriorize my fears by putting them down in writing or doing a drawing, you know what I mean. And this is my first effort.

Alpin

Do I have a house? A granite stone house?

¿Tengo una casa? ¿Una casa de granito?

Aislene

Read me the poem! This very minute!

¡Leéme el poema! ¡Ahora mismo!

Branna

Mum, Alpin has been screaming for nearly a month. He has´t eaten a thing since he returned from Magpie´s sale, and he´s a lot thinner. And now he´s also beginning to change colour.

Aislene

I want to hear that poem now, Arley.

Quiero oír ese poema ahora mismo, Arley.

Arley

I have a nightmare.
Night after night
The boggle gives me no respite.
If it were someone mummy dear knew,
She might make it go away.
But she´s not acquainted with fear.
Or they´re not on speaking terms.
So it will stay, I fear. Right here.
My daddy says all I need do is laugh
to make it dispappear.
But what it does is grin right back,
So it will stay, I fear.
Do I like it better with a smirk
Or with a visage drear?
That´s all the choice I really have.
At least, so I fear.

Y a mi sólo me queda elegir
Si le prefiero amenazador o burlón.
No se va a ir.

Aislene

Arley! That is so - that is so-so-so pretty! That is absolutely lovely! I didn´t know this child was so precocious. Arley, you´ve found your voice! Arley, you´re a poet! Your verses are so ripe and mature!

¡Arley! ¡Arley, has encontrado tu voz! ¡Arley, eres poeta! ¡Están maduros tus versos!

Fiona

Mum, Alpin is turning purple. He looks like he is going to throw up a bucket of peasoup. I saw somebody do that on mortal TV.

Arley

If you really like it, I can dedicate it to you, Mrs. Dullahan.

Aislene

Call me Aislene. Oh, that is so sweet of you! Thank you so much! Would you do me the honour of letting me stick your poem on my icebox with a magnet? I´ve always hungered to have a poem to stick on my icebox. This will be the first.

Branna

He can´t throw up soup. Remember he hasn´t had anything to eat since Magpie´s garage sale. For the first time since he was born there actually is food in our icebox. We can even invite Arley to a snack.

Alpin

Have I got a house? A granite stone house?

¿Tengo una casa? ¿Una casa de granito?

Branna

Mum! Alpin is completely purple! You stop that, Alpin! Stop it this minute!

¡Mamá! Alpin está completamente morado! ¡Basta ya, Alpin! ¡Basta ahora mismo!

Arley

If you really like my work, I have more, Miss Aislene. I´m working on a poem about the city where I live. It goes like this:

This is no city for old folks
That fight the pension thieves (the government included sometimes)
For children playing in a park, (that is so obvious)
For anybody in the dark, (like you don´t understand anything or what you need to survive, like you´re a good worker, but you´re no good at finding a job)
For-

Alpin

Do I have a house? A granite stone house?

¿Tengo una casa? ¿Una casa de granito?

Branna

Mum! Alpin´s hat is changing colour too! And it´s getting bigger than his head! I think he´s dehydrating from so much crying.

Arley

Wow! It´s true! I think I could write a poem about drying up from crying like that.

¡Uy!

Aislene

What a lovely idea, precious! I´m so glad Alpin´s wrath can inspire you. At least that way it´s good for something. Isn´t that nice, Alpin, how your wrath can be Arley´s muse? Why, I think I can safely predict it will one day be as famous as the wrath of Achilles.

Fiona

Arley, why don´t you go spend the summer at the beach like those humans you live with do and write a poem about the waves and the seashells?

Arley

Because there are more interesting things to do. Like helping Alpin right now. Alpin, listen! You needn´t throw a fit and die. Look! Take hold of one end of the wishbone. You can wish for your house!

Porque hay cosas más interesantes que hacer. Como ayudar a Alpin ahora mismo. ¡Escucha, Alpin! No necesitas morir de una rabieta. ¡Mira! ¡Puedes desear tener tu casa!

Alpin

No way! What if you get the winning end of that twig?

Arley

I´ll wish that you get your house too! That way you can´t lose. You can´t lose anyway. My Mum builds houses for everybody. She promised to. She makes very few promises, but she keeps them.

Alpin

What if she hasn´t built a house for me?

Arley

I´m sure she has. They build them as soon as they know one of us is going to be born.
They´re nice houses too. Some are made of bricks and some are made of granite and some are made of both.

Alpin

I want a granite one. If that´s better than bricks, of course.

Arley

My house is made of both granite and bricks. If you like it better than yours, I´ll trade with you. You see? You needn´t cry. Your problem is one of those that have a solution.

Fiona

Mum, is this true? Are we all born with houses? Because if it is true, Branna and I have our own houses, don´t we?

Aislene

I was afraid this would happen.

Me lo temía. Me lo estaba temiendo.

Cancer the Crab / Cáncer el cangrejo

Hi. I´m Cancer, the Crab. I´m up in the heavens because I won a lawsuit.

¡Hola!

When I lived on earth, in Lake Lerna, I had for a neighbour the famous Lernaean Hydra, the Giant Serpent of Lerna, a creature with nine heads, only one of which was immortal, but the rest of which would grow back when cut, sometimes two in place of one.

The Hydra was the guardian of one of those portals which are entrances to the netherworld, and a very good guardian she was too. If she had to eat up a fool who had dared to try to sneak into such a nefarious place, she did it without blinking. She wasn´t being mean. It was her job. After all, you are not supposed to enter Hades unless you´re dead, and that was where the foolish trespassers wanted to go, wasn´t it?

No estaba siendo cruel.

Not that she had to put up a personal fight often, for her breath was so venomous that just to breathe the vapours that rose from the lake where we lived would permanently knock out many a trespasser. In brief, she was not the ideal neighbour, but she did keep trespassers at bay.

One dire day there showed up near our home a hero you have probably heard of, since he is famous for being one of the strongest men that have ever lived - Hercules, also known as Herakles.

This fellow was determined to do my poor neighbour in and should he prove to be less than what was needed for the job, he had brought along with him his nephew Iolaus, another muscular hulk who aspired to the title of brute of the year.

Hercules began to chop off the heads of the hydra with a sickle, while Iolaus burnt the necks with a torch so that the heads could not grow back or multiply. When the only head left was the immortal one, I felt so outraged at such an unequal combat that I decided it was my duty to help my neighbour and charged against her enemies. I got to prick Iolaus big toe with my pincers before big man Hercules stomped me flat.

On my way to the other world I learned that Hercules had been sent to kill the Hydra by his stepmother, Hera, the queen of the gods. Everybody told me I had grounds to sue them. I put down all this stuff in a written document and I sued Hercules, who in turn sued his stepmother.

Hera decided to settle this out of court. She offered me a place among the stars if I agreed to let the case drop. I accepted. End of the story.

The truth is it´s not a very good place. I don´t shine much. In fact, my constellation is famous for being a little dim. I don´t mind. I´m a bit of a hermit and prefer to be in the dark. But I do belong to the zodiac and I get to be in the spotlight on the very first day of summer, which makes me very popular with people about to enjoy holidays.

No brillo mucho. Soy una constelación con fama de apagadita. No me importa.

The most famous thing in my constellation is probably the beehive or manger (Praesepe) cluster.
My brightest star is Acubens (the Claw) and the second brightest is Al Tarf (the Tip).

´Bye for now. Have a fun summer!

Y por ahora, hasta pronto. ¡Qué tengaís un verano divertido!

Galileo Galilei

I was the first to see the Beehive Cluster through a telescope. I counted 40 stars.
