My Ship / Mi nave

My Ship / Mi nave

My ship has sails that are made of silk / Mi nave tiene velas hechas de seda
The decks are trimmed with gold  / las cubiertas están ribeteadas de oro
And of jam and spice / y de mermelada y especias
There's a paradise in the hold / un paraiso hay en la bodega.
My ship's aglow with a million pearls / Mi nave irradia la luz de un millón de perlas
And rubies fill each bin / y rubíes colman cada contenedor
The sun sits high in a sapphire sky / el sol está entronizado en un cielo de zafiro
When my ship comes in / cuando mi nave llega a puerto.
I can wait the years till it appears / Puedo esperar años hasta que aparezca
One fine day one spring / un buen día de primavera
But the pearls and such / pero las perlas y lo demás
They won't mean much / no tendrán gran valor
If there's missing just one thing / si falta sólo un detalle.
I do not care if that day arrives / No me importa que llegue ese día o no,
That dream need never be / ese sueño no necesita hacerse realidad
If the ship I sing / si la nave que canto
Doesn't also bring / no me trae también
My own true love to me / a mi verdadero amor.

These lyrics are by Ira Gershwin, called "the jeweller" by other songwriters because of his exquisite work. You can listen to the original version of this lovely song with music by Kurt Weill as sang by Gertrude Lawrence.

We selected two pieces for you from Youtube.

Encontramos dos piezas para vosotros en Youtube.

This is called "Pomp and Circumstance." It is by Sir Edward Elgar and is heard at so many graduations that some people call it "The Graduation March."

And you can sing along with this one because it has splendid subtitles.

The Countess Cathleen / La Condesa Catalina

Young, beautiful and willful, the Countess Cathleen was the leader of a clan in mediaeval Ireland. That meant that back then and back there for her people she was the government, and since she liked to do things properly, she took very seriously her duty to feed them, which is what a government must do if it wants to be good for something.

At first it was easy for Cathleen to please, because her lands were fertile and the people of her clan  hardworking and the only things she had to do were abstain from robbing her people and smile a lot on holidays. It seems that not everyone finds this easy to do but Cathleen did and so all went well.

Countess Cathleen / La Condesa Catalina

Is everybody happy?

Yeeeeees!

¡Siiiiiiiiii!

But one day her steward, Fergus the White, noticed that it hadn´t rained in three days. In Ireland this can only mean one thing and that thing is …

Fergus the White / Fergus el Blanco

There is a drought!

¡Hay una sequía!

From that moment on desolation was the only thing that grew on the emerald isle. The potato crop didn´t fail because America hadn´t been discovered yet, but the wheat and other cereals stopped growing, vegetables and fruits disappeared and one couldn´t find a single miserable berry in the forest.

Cathleen was an educated young lady and she was familiar with the story of Joseph and the pharaoh’s dream, so she was ready for the thin cows. When all Ireland began to die of hunger, she started to give out what she had stored in her barns. But not only her people approached her castle to receive their daily dole of food. Half of Ireland came there when they heard she was giving out free food. So Catherine met with her steward.

Fergus the White / Fergus el Blanco

What we are giving out is running out.

Se nos acaba lo que se daba.

Cathleen / Catalina

Load a ship with all there is in the treasure room of the castle. We won’t find buyers for this stuff here right now, so go by sea to England and try to sell the jewels and works of art there. And return as soon as you can with food. I will only keep my crown of a countess. I always wear it to remind myself who I am and what my duty is.

Fergus the White filled a ship with all he could find in and out of the treasure room. Only four pieces of furniture were left in the castle and Cathleen continued to give out what little food there was left. A day came, however, when she noticed fewer people had come for their dole. So she consulted her nurse Oona.

Cathleen / Catalina

Did I count wrong or are less people coming for food?

Oona / Una

There are those who have found another supplier. Two strangers have arrived in town. They have occupied an abandoned house in the nearest village and they are dealing in an unusual and tenebrous business. Here, I have one of their business cards.

Heartless and Callous / Malaentraña  y Desaprensivo

We give you an unlimited supply of wine for your soul. All the wine you can have if you sign this document.

Callous / Desaprensivo

What are you waiting for? You, why do you hesitate? You´ll be able to party nonstop.

¿A qué esperáis? ¿Tú, por qué dudas? Podréis hacer botellón sin cesar.

Villager / Lugareño

Yes, but drinking on an empty stomach…

Callous / Desaprensivo

That way you get high sooner, silly.

The days went by and Fergus did not return. He had sold the treasures and his ship was loaded with food but uncanny misfortunes kept him from leaving port and sailing off to Ireland.

Fergus the White / Fergus el Blanco

Ah, I won´t make it in time! Sure, this has got to be the devil´s doing because air traffic controllers don’t exist yet.

Cathleen´s cupboard was so bare there wasn´t enough food in it to feed a single anorexic ant. But the streets of the neighboring village were strewn with drunks who lay right where they had dropped. Cathleen put on the only pair of shoes she had left because she had sold the better part of her wardrobe and part of the worse too and walked off to see the sinister strangers who were buying souls.

Callous / Desaprensivo

Here comes our business rival.

Por ahí viene la competencia.

Heartless / Malaentraña

She is no longer a threat to us.

Ya no es una amenaza para nosotros.

Hic iacent...

Cathleen / Catalina

These goings on have to stop. These people cannot be lying out there on the streets.

Whyever not? Nobody has complained. Not even the neighbors. They are lying out there in a drunken stupor too.

¿Y por qué no? Sí no se ha quejado nadie. Ni siquiera los vecinos. Ellos también están en coma etílico.

Cathleen / Catalina

I want you to stop taking advantage of these poor people, you soulless scoundrels.

Advantage, eh? Surely you can do things better than we do. Let me see, you are starting to piss me off, so what can you do for these people?

¿Abusar, eh?

Cathleen / Catalina

I have nothing left save my crown of a countess. It is made of gold, emeralds and pearls. And it means a lot to me. But I will let you have it if you promise to help my people instead of taking advantage of them.

Callous / Desaprensivo

Are you blind? Can´t you see what we are wearing on our foreheads? We are more important than you are. Our master only bids us gather souls for him, and the more we obtain, the better he treats us. He has made us princes to reward us for our faithful services. We don´t need your tacky little countess crown at all.

You think you are better than we are, but you aren´t. You pretend to be a superior being but we doubt you are one at all. I’ll offer you a deal. If you love your people so much, prove it by giving us your soul in exchange for theirs. No? Why not? Don´t you love your people that much anymore?

¿No? ¿Qué pasa? ¿Ya no quieres tanto a tu gente?

Callous / Desaprensivo

You are going to exchange hundreds of souls for that fool’s?

This has become personal. And she doesn´t have the guts to sign anyway.

Esto ya es personal. Además, esa no tiene agallas para firmar.

Cathleen / Catalina

Hand me the pen.

Pásame la pluma.

As soon as Cathleen had signed, the sky darkened, filling up with black clouds that clashed provoking a terrible storm. Cathleen returned to the castle stumbling in the dark and the heavy rain that did not cease to pour till dawn. But with the first rays of sunlight a magnificent rainbow appeared. The local people, washed clean by the rain, got up from the streets where they had been lying and went home to sow their fields. Oona, the nurse, who had fallen asleep in the castle tower trying to see where Cathleen was, woke to spot Fergus the White returning to the castle with the provisions acquired in England. But Cathleen lay on her bed sunken in a terrible depression and no one could cheer her up although now and again she did manage to lift her head and ask if her people were all happy.

Cathleen / Catalina

Did I do right or was I just plain cocky?

She could neither eat nor drink though she tried to and she began to waste away until a day arrived when the devil princes came to the castle and forced their way in till they reached the foot of her bed. Catherine tried to get on her feet to go with them, but she would have collapsed if a pair of celestial angels hadn´t suddenly materialized to hold her up. The ceiling of her room was filled with light and a staircase appeared out of nowhere.

The Lord / El Señor

Come upstairs, Cathleen, we aren´t going to leave one of the few that care outside.

You see that? There is no justice. We won her fair and square but He takes her just because He wants to.

The Lord / El Señor

Oh, come on, off with you, go make trouble somewhere else.

Venga ya, ale, vosotros a incordiar a otra parte.

Cathleen / Catalina

What go make trouble somewhere else? Lock them up in hell forever this very minute!

The Lord / El Señor

Listen, child, I will give you shelter but you mustn’t try to overthrow me. And no frowning, you´ve got to march in here smiling.

Callous / Desaprensivo

Let’s get out of here while the going is good. We may have a better bargain than we think. Imagine having to live with someone that bossy.

People / Pueblo

Well, bossy or not, she fed us and it is useful to turn her into a legend for it so her attitude will catch on.

Finis
(This is not a misspelling of "finished." It is Latin. /Esto no es "finished" mal escrito. Es latín.)

I wrote a nationalist play based on this legend to describe the deplorable state of Ireland in my time. In my version the English were the bad guys.

Nauta

The sun is climbing to its highest point, and soon it will be the aestival solstice and summer will begin. Although officially we have to wait till the 21st of June to say that summer is here, this year I feel that it is already warmer than it has been at this time in past years. In fact, I stand here sweltering this very minute, and this brings to my mind the legend of the phoenix.

According to Greek mythology, the phoenix is a wonderful bird that lives in Phoenicia, near a well in which it bathes every morning at dawn. Its voice is entrancingly beautiful and the sun god Phoebus Apollo, lord of music, stops his chariot on its drive from east to west across the sky to listen to the phoenix sing in the shower.

Every five hundred years the phoenix builds a nest made of twigs and aromatic herbs and spices such as cinnamon, spikenard and myrrh on the top of a tree, sits in it and then ignites it. Wrapped in flames, the nest with the bird in it burns until both are reduced to ashes that clot together to form an egg. When the egg hatches, the phoenix, now reborn, breaks out of the shell and returns to life for another five hundred years.

This ability to be reborn from its own ashes has turned the phoenix into a symbol of immortality, resurrection and renewal.

The phoenix in our illustration feels a bit upset because we made him pose in front of a conflagration since it will not be his time to burn till another two centuries.

Firebird

I’m far more uncomfortable with foolish Ivanushka pulling my tail. Firebirds are Russian phoenixes and very popular in Slavic folklore. Click on Ivan, the firebird and the grey wolf to read a legend about me.

Igor Stravinsky

I created a ballet about the firebird. You can watch it on the video below. Ah, and my portrait is by Picasso.

Ballydehob Jazz Festival / Festival de Jazz de Ballydehob

David Sánchez Romero de Ávila tells us something about his week at  Ballydehob, Ireland.

Last week I was in Ballydehob, a little town in Ireland, near Cork City. I was there because I had the opportunity to travel with a group of students from the Brother Garate, a high school in Ciudad Real and from Liffey, an English Language School, also from Ciudad Real.

Although I did the same tour last year I was surprised once again by what I found there. It´s a very small town with only a main street and a few streets on the side but it has a very great cultural activity. There are many pubs where concerts are organized; poetry recitals, traditional sessions during which people play and sing the traditional songs of Ireland. etc. To sum up, it´s a very busy cultural place.

I wish that in our towns and cities of Spain we had that love for culture and that community spirit, because Ballydehob is a little town but its people have created a jazz festival which is known all over the world. This event lasts for a weekend. This year, it was celebrated from the 29th of Abril to the 2nd of May and there were many concerts and activities. For example, a street busking where young and adult people can play in the street with a place number and an inscription. The musicians who the jury thinks are the best are given a prize. There is also a youth music workshop for young people who never played instruments before so they can learn to do it and play in a group, compose songs, etc. And many more activities.

But in a big Jazz Festival there have to be big concerts and I went to one. It was so amazing! Andreas Varady´s trio opened the festival and it was a jazz trio with drums, bass and soloist guitar. The most amazing thing about that concert was the age of the guitarist and the drummer - they were fourteen!!! And they played very well some original songs and very difficult phrases. Andreas is a guitarist who started to play when he was four and his dad, the bass player, taught him. Very good concert, I enjoyed it. But that wasn´t the only concert, everywhere, all the time in the streets, in the pubs, there were concerts with very different jazz bands. You can´t get bored in Ballydehob Jazz Festival if you love music!

It was a nice week in Ireland. I learned English, I saw the wonderful Irish Glenealy and I enjoyed myself and played in the street busking, I really enjoyed this musical experience, it was really good!
