St. Michael, St Raphael, Tobias, St. Gabriel / San Miguel, San Rafael, Tobías y San Gabriel
Like we have said in an earlier post, September and October are months of angels, good or bad. This year, we will discuss some traditions that have to do with angels, more specifically, with St. Michael.
Como dijimos en una entrada anterior, septiembre y octubre son meses de ángeles, buenos o malos. Este año discutiremos algunas de las tradiciones británicas que tienen que ver con ángeles, concretamente con San Miguel.
Michaelmas is the feastday of St. Michael, captain general of all the Good Lord's armies. It used to be on October 10th, but was transferred to September 29th and is now also the feastday of two other archangels, Raphael and Gabriel.
Michaelmas es la fiesta de San Miguel, capitán general de todas las tropas del Buen Dios. Solía celebrarse el diez de octubre, pero trasladaron esta fiesta al 29 de septiembre, y ahora también es el día de otros dos arcángeles, Rafael y Gabriel.
St. Michael is famous for having sent the rebellious devil packing at some moment during the fall, and that is probably why his feastday is kept in the autumn. The devil is said to have fallen from the high heavens and landed with a crash on a blackberry bush. Upset with the bush for having scrached him, he defiled it. Which is why tradition holds that one mustn't gather blackberries in late fall. Actually, these fruits do turn bitter in late autumn, because tannins build up in them in this season.
San Miguel es famoso por haber botado al demonio del cielo en algún momento del otoño, coincidiendo esa caída con la de las hojas, Se cuenta que al caer de las alturas el demonio aterrizó sobre una zarza de moras que le arañaron bien arañado. Another Michaelmas tradition is to eat goose on this day. Why? Legend says that Queen Elizabeth Tudor was having roast goose for dinner when her messengers informed her that the Spanish Armada would never get to invade England, having been wiped out at sea mostly by the Spanish habit of naming anyone but the right person for a job. Half of us here in Spain insist on doing that. The other half rages. Only a few are able to sit on the fence. Being impartial can also be dangerous.
Otra tradición del día de San Miguel tiene que ver con comer ganso ese día. ¿Por qué? La leyenda cuenta que la reina Isabel Tudor estaba zampando ganso asado cuando sus mensajeros la informaron de que la Armada española nunca invadiría Inglaterra, al haber quedado destrozada, sobre todo por la terca costumbre española de nombrar para un cargo a cualquiera menos el más adecuado para el mismo. La mitad de España siempre se empeña en hacer eso, y la otra mitad rabia. Pocos se pueden sentar en la valla a observar. Ser imparcial también es un peligro.
Well, Good Queen Bess said that from that day on, goose was to be eaten at Michaelmas, to celebrate this victory. And cooks and housewives took this opportunity to train for Christmas,and did what experimenting they had to on Michaelmas, so the even more traditional Christmas goose would turn out perfect.

A funny tradition that has to do with lawlessness and making noise also took place in some parts of England at this time of year, which is also the nutting season. This practice is known as Crack Nut Sunday. People would crack nuts in cnurch during the service on the Sunday before Michaelmas. As noisily as they could. The minister was often forced to stop proceedings until the people had quieted down, but then, once he was ready to continue, people would start making noise again.Teachers know a lot about this kind of behaviour. In other parts of England, some people throw apples at the constables or the police on this day. It's probably not much of a problem if they manage to catch them.
Una tradición graciosa que tiene que ver con la falta de ley y orden y con alborotar también se daba en algunas partes de Inglaterra en esta época del año, que coincide con la cosecha de las nueces. Esta práctica se conoce como Domingo de Casca Nueces. Los parroquianos se ponían a cascar nueces tan ruidosamente como fuese posible durante los oficios del domingo anterior a la fiesta de San Miguel. El oficiante se veía forzado a interrumpir su labor y esperar a que el público se calmase. Pero en cuanto el retomaba su oficio, la gente volvía a cascar nueces. Los maestros y profes sabemos bien lo que se siente en estas situaciónes. En otras partes de Inglaterra, la gente lanzaba manzanas y nueces a los alguaciles en ese día. No era un gran problema si los atacados conseguian cazarlas al vuelo.
And in Scotland, women who wanted children would seek and collect wild carrots that they would give to their men on Michaelmas.Finding rare twin carrots was considered even more lucky. As they plucked these carrots, they would sing, "Cleft, fruitful, fruitful, fruitful, Joy of carrots surpassing upon me, Michael the brave endowing me, Bride the fair be aiding me."
Y en Escocia las mujeres que querían tener hijos salían a recolectar zanahorias silvestres que luego regalaban a sus hombres el día de San Miguel. Encontrar zanahorias gemelas se consideraba de muy buena suerte. Mientras cosechaban estas zanahorias, cantaban, "Hendidura, fructífera, fructífera, fructífera, alegría de zanahorias que me supera, Miguel el valiente me dota, Brígida la bella me asiste."
