Poet, Guinea Pig and Guide / Poeta, cobaya y guía

In the gardens of the Job Library, nouveau riche Curmudgeon Finn is nodding off on his amethyst and gold designer deck chair while he awaits his breakfast, to be served on a silver platter. After that he will shuffle off to bed and sleep till noon.

It sure can change your life to be employed by a woman who is nuts.

I will peek through a window. Maybe I´ll find whom I´m looking for here.

Vinny / Vicentico

Yep! There he is. Hey! Hey, kid! I´ve been looking for you for weeks. Open the window and let me in.

¡Sí! Ahí está. ¡Eh!

Vinny / Vicentico

So this is where you´re at. Books are scary. I feel like I´m going to be trapped by the leaves and squashed  flat between the covers.

Arley

Not if you shout in time. What can I do for you?

No si gritas a tiempo. ¿Qué puedo hacer por ti?

Vinny /Vicentico

You don't drop by the woods much lately, do you?

Arley

Not since the Cucullati Scandal. After Alpin shouted murder inducing a raging mob of neighbours to try to storm the bunker and lynch the hooded geniuses, Mr. Binky asked me to keep away from the forest for a time so Artemius wouldn't have to resign.

Vinny / Vicentico

I haven´t seen any of the cucullati either. What has become of them?

Tampoco he visto a ninguno de los cuculatos. ¿Qué ha sido de ellos?

Arley

They were ready to move to another forest but Nauta persuaded them it was best to stay. He said it was all just a misunderstanding. They've moved to another part of Minced Forest, though. They're not monsters. They are only mad about science. All they want is to investigate without being bothered. But I think they´re not giving out any more free food, to avoid being sued.

Vinny / Vicentico

Another good thing that goes. And the poisoner? I mean, your girlfriend.

Otra buena costumbre que desaparece. ¿Y la envenenadora? Quiero decir, tu amiga.

Arley

Her apples had never done anyone harm before. They were marvellously good for everyone. She was so upset by what happened to me that she has sworn to discover what went wrong and remedy it. I still get to see her now and then so she can test her apples on me. I wanted to be her troubadour but ended up being her guinea pig. Anyway, I've kept what was left of my apple and had it covered with enamel and studded with stones and turned into a brooch. I'm going to give it to Rosina to let her know I have no hard feelings.

Does it look good?

¿Ha quedado bien?

Vinny / Vicentico

It's very difficult to be romantic among scientists. But you should know what you are getting into. You're a sophisticated kid. Hey, do you still live in a big city? I need to visit a city but I can't go alone because I've never been to one and they say cities are very dangerous for us woodland creatures. You ought to know some about surviving there, eh? Would you be my guide?

Arley

Sure. Anytime. But to which city do you want to go?

Claro. Cuando quieras. Pero ¿a qué ciudad quieres ir?

Vinny / Vicentico

One where I can play the little clover lottery game.

Nauta's Mini Mythology: Daphne, Hyacinthus and Clytie / Mini Mitlogía de Nauta: Dafne, Jacinto y Clitia

Nauta

Today I am going to tell you about the origin of laurel, hyacinths, and sunflowers. They are very different plants, but they all have in common that they are sacred to the sun god, Phoebus Apollo.

Phoebus Apollo was a very handsome god whose physical appearance was always that of a young man. But despite his personal beauty he was not always lucky in love.

Apollo's first love was Daphne, a young nymph who had no interest in getting herself a husband. She was the daughter of the river god Peneus and had already told him that she had no intention of giving him grandchildren, since she was only happy when wandering freely through the woods where she practiced her favorite sport, which was hunting.

Peneus told his daughter she could live any way she pleased, but that he feared she would have problems because she was very beautiful and was sure to attract unwanted admirers. And that was just what happened when Apollo first set his eyes on her.

Apollo fell madly in love with Daphne, but she couldn´t stand the sight of him. He stalked her everywhere and she was so sick of it that she had to ask her father for help. "All I can do is turn you into a tree nymph," said Peneus. "If you lock yourself up inside a tree he will probably get bored of waiting for you to come out and will leave you alone. And that´s the end of that."

Daphne turned into a laurel tree before Apollo´s eyes. He was so upset he started crying, watering her with his tears. He sat beneath the tree with a crown made of its leaves on his head, playing sad tunes on his lyre and singing about how unhappy he was. At first he couldn't be torn away from the laurel tree, but at last a day arrived when somebody else attracted his attention.

Hyacinthus was a handsome youth who loved sports. Unlike Daphne, he liked Apollo and he and the sun god became inseparable until an unfortunate accident put an end to their relationship. One day, while Apollo and Hyacinthus were playing a game of quoits, Apollo accidentally hit Hyacinthus on the forehead with a metal ring, breaking his neck in this manner.

Hyacinthus, who was mortal,  gave Apollo one last confused look and fell down and died. Apollo was inconsolable. He was never realy himself again. When a beautiful flower that could hardly hold up its heavy head sprung from the spot where Hyacinthus was buried, Apollo claimed it as his own.

Apolo no tenía consuelo.

And now I must tell you about poor Clytie, who gave Apollo the third of his sacred flowers. Apollo honoured her with his attentions for a while, but he was not much interested in her and soon turned to others. She, instead, was completely insane about the god of the sun and there was no way she could forget him.

Her obsession with Apollo was so strong that one day she sat outside on the ground staring up at the sun hoping to catch a glimpse of him up there and never got up again. She sat there for so long, following the sun from east to west with her eyes, that she grew roots and  turned into a sunflower,  Even today, the sunflower is a symbol of fidelity. And the national Irish poet will give faith of this.

Thomas Moore

The heart that has truly loved never forgets,
But as truly loves on to the close;
As the sunflower turns on her god when he sets
The same look that she turned when he rose.

How to be Mayor / Como ser alcalde

 Sancho

What does one need to be mayor?

¿Qué hace falta para ser alcalde?

Don Quijote

According to what I have read, a cat.

Según he leído, un gato.

Dick Whittington / Ricardito Whittington

That is so. I was thrice Lord Mayor of London thanks to my cat.

Así es. Yo llegué a ser Señor Alcalde de Londres tres veces gracias a mi gato.

The Mayor-Making Cat / El gato que puso un alcalde

I´m going to tell you the story of how I made Dick mayor of London.

Dick was a poor orphan who had heard that the streets of London were paved with gold. Since he didn´t have anything better to do, he thought it might be a good idea to go to London and make his fortune there.

When he reached London he soon saw that the streets were made of cobbles, dirt and mud. He was tired and hungry and had no money and no place to sleep. Fortunately for him, a rich merchant named Mr. Fitzwarren took pity on him and let him sleep in the garret of his fine house. Unfortunately for him, the garret was full of rats.

It was very dangerous to have a rat bite you back then because you might catch the plague as a result and there was no cure for this. With the first money Dick earned in London, he bought a cat. The cat - that is, I - was a splendid hunter and soon there were no rats in the garret nor anywhere in Mr. Fitzwarren´s fancy home.

One day Mr. Fitzwarren told Dick and his other servants that he was about to travel to distant lands to engage in trade there and try to make more money that way. He advised them to send something of theirs on his ship. He would try to make money for them with it. Dick had nothing but his cat, that is, but me. He didn´t want to lose me, but he felt obliged to send something with Mr. Fitzwarren.

As soon as  Mr. Fitzwarren had sailed away, Sarah, the cook, who had never liked Dick, began to make life impossible for him. Dick felt so oppressed that he finally decided to leave Mr. Fitzwarren's home and London.

On his way out of London, just when he had reached Highgate Hill, the Bells of Bow began to ring. Dick stopped to listen to them thinking it would be the last time he would hear them. Suddenly, to his surprise, the bells spoke to him. "Turn again, Whittington, once Lord Mayor of London," they sang. "Turn again, Whittington, twice Lord Mayor of London! Turn again, Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London!"

Dick turned back and learned that Mr. Fitzwarren´s ship had returned. The Sultan of Barbary, whose palace was infested with rats had paid a fortune for Dick´s cat, that is, for me. Dick was now rich enough to marry Mr. Fitzwarren´s daughter, Alice, and become this gentleman´s business partner. Dick was so successful that he got to be Lord Mayor of London not just once, but three times. And he bought me back from the sultan, as you can see in the engraving below. We were even buried in the same church, St. Michael Paternoster Royal!
