Enlisting Seven / Alistando a siete

 Aislene

Do you remember the tree that gave mutant cherries? I hadn´t noticed before, but this year it hasn´t given a single one. Instead, the trees on its sides have produced a few flowers.

 Titania

I only know that even plants are getting harder to handle.

 Arley

Mum, are you friends with the devil?

Mamá, ¿tú te entiendes con el demonio?

Titania

Mean gossips say so, but the truth is he gives me the creeps. He has his territory, I have mine and we try to be politically correct. That´s all.

Arley

Then you won´t want to come with me to see him.

Entonces no querrás venir conmigo a verle.

Titania

Now? But it’s international fairy day. I have to be in a hundred places at the same time. Oberon, take Arley to see the devil, he wants something with him.

¿Ahora?

Oberon

Ohh, but I haven´t got a minute. With the otherworld football championships going on, I´m really stressed.

Titania

You are going to let your son deal with the devil on his own because of a football match? I can´t believe it.

Oberon

Today football is so important that one can´t allow just anyone to win a match. Every goal has to be politically correct. Why don´t you come see how the games are organized, Arley? You´d learn a lot more useful stuff than with the devil.

Arley

Is the Sidhe Bang and Ye Fay coalition going to win?

Oberon

No. We haven´t got the money to buy that right now. What I want is for them to lose as quickly as possible and return home without causing great expense. But I don´t want somebody who will give us trouble at some other time to win either. It´s not easy, no. Why don´t you ask Gregoria Tenoria to accompany you?

Arley

Since she began to work for Valentine, she doesn´t leave the child´s side for a second. Val is always in danger because she is the girlfriend of the son of the pirate Boogerbeard. A lot of people want to make poor Ibys pay for his father´s crimes. And I don´t think we should take the baby to Hell. Who knows what she might learn there. I haven´t crossed its doorstep yet and they´ve already taught me manners.

 Alpin

Listen, Arley. I know two guys who are willing to participate in any adventure. I´ll go for them. You ask the fellow who is sitting under that tree if he wants to come too. If he says yes, that makes five.

Mira, Arley.

Myself when young did eagerly frequent doctor and saint and heard great argument about it and about, but evermore came out by the same door as in I went. Don´t mix with those who do not know how to love. Sit here under this bough and I will make you a gift of an autographed copy of my book of verses. My sweetheart will soon arrive with music and refreshments.

Happy International Fairy Day!

¡Feliz día internacional de las hadas!

At a Gateway to Hell / En un portal al Infierno

It is ten o´clock sharp in the morning on a splendid summer´s day.  Arley and Alpin, decided to continue with the adventure that went unfinished a year ago, have come to Salamanca the sapient and are standing under an arch that rises where once was the church of St. Cyprian, site of a notorious school of the occult and a gateway to Hell.

 Alpin

You knock,  Arley. People like you better than they do me.

In answer to Arley´s knock, a sinister spyhole appears out of nowhere. Looking out through it is the demoness Moll Avery.

What the devil do you want? ¿To sell us shit? All we buy here is souls and it´s too early for that. Get the hell out of here before I throw a pail of pee on you both.

¿Qué demonios queréis? ¿Vender alguna mierda?

 Arley

Good morning, madam. We are searching for a magic pencil and have been told it can be found here.

What? What bloody magic pencil, what? There´s none of that here. Get your butt out of here, you shameless brat! Wish me a good morning indeed. The nerve.

¡Qué condenado lápiz ni que porras! ¡Aquí no hay nada de eso! ¡Largo, maleducado, vete de aquí cagando demonios! Desearme buenos días a mí. Será descarado el mierdecilla ese.

Slam!
¡Pam!

Alpin

She  has slammed the spyhole door in our noses. This is what happens when one is too polite, Arley. Haven´t you heard that when in Rome one must do like the Romans do? I bet that´s what this imbecile expects of us. Open this minute, you unfriendly fool! Who do you think you are? A French doorkeeper? This isn´t about you, you daughter of Satan.  I demand to see the headmaster of this stupid school.

Hmm. Look, lads, the boss won´t come out. He´s far too important to do that. And you two can´t come in. It is strictly forbidden.

Hmm. Y vosotros aquí no podéis entrar. Está prohibidísimo.

 Arley

I´m of age, if it´s because of that. I´m fay and I´m more than seven years old.

Why would that matter here? It´s because you are only two. Only groups of seven are allowed to pass through this door.

Alpin
But what nonsense is this, you dumbass? Why seven?

¿Pero qué tonterías dices, tía borrica? ¿Eso por qué?

 Moll Avery / Mariálvara

Well…it´s one of the boss´s quirks. He likes the number seven. Maybe it brings him luck. Come, don´t insist. It´s not that I don´t wish to let you in. It´s not just forbidden, it´s also impossible. This door is designed so it won´t open unless there are seven people waiting to enter out there on the doorstep. Don´t pester me anymore. There´s nothing I can do about this and I have a lot of work to do.

 Alpin

So we must return with five more people. Let´s go get them.

Tenemos que volver con otras cinco personas. Vamos a por ellas.

 Arley

I´m not sure I want to return.

No sé si yo quiero volver.

 Alpin

But why not? The maid has scared you? Why, she´s a cinch to handle. All you need do is tell her what she has to do. Not ask her politely, like you did.

The Source of the Scary Noise / El origen del ruidito inquietante

To win for himself a second magic pencil, Arley has wandered all over Owl Wood Manse seeking for the mysterious source of a tiny but irritating noise.

He has searched inside the closets of bedrooms full of heavy velvet curtains and bed covers thick with dust. He has checked row after row of the equally dusty books in a well-stocked library. That at least was interesting but he failed to find even a wee bookworm chomping on paper or a secret door behind the huge tomes.

In the dining room for twenty he found not a crumb, but in the kitchen were the petrified remains of the pieces of toast that the late Uncle Lonefellow, once the man with the jumbisack, had left over when having his last breakfast.

Nothing in the attic, nothing in the cellar. Nothing from attic to cellar. The only thing Arley has managed to do is worsen his allergies. The dust is driving him nuts. And then, after one of his sneezes, which occurs in the old stable now turned modern garage as well as overcrowded storeroom of the house, a sweet male voice speaks out with a strong foreign accent.

Batish Afsoon

Afiat Bahsheh.

Purity be bestowed upon you. May it be for your health.

Que te concedan la pureza. Sea por tu salud.

Arley

Thanks, but…Who has wished me good health?

Gracias. Pero…  ¿Quién me ha deseado salud?

Batish Afsoon

One whom you should now wish good health to in return. You must say salaamat bashed. It means good health to you too.

Uno al que debes deseársela tú ahora. Has de decir salaamat bashid. Significa qué tengas salud tú también.

 Arley

Well, that. Saalamat bashid. But who are you?

Pues, eso. Salaamat bashid. Pero, ¿quién eres?

Batish Afsoon

I am the genie of the lamp on which you are leaning. If you rub it a little more strongly with your sleeve, you will see me.

Arley

That's as good as done.

Eso está hecho..

Batish Afsoon

Hi, my new master.

Hola, mi nuevo amo.

Arley

I? Oh, no! I couldn´t ever be anybody´s master. I wasn´t brought up that way. Besides, the lamp isn´t mine. It belongs to a married couple that is trying to get some sleep in the basement. They are plagued by a strange noise, an insistent little tapping. Would you know who might be making that noise?

¿Yo? ¡Uy, no!

 Batish Afsoon

I, with my little hammer of gold. The lamp was deformed and I have been restoring it. Ask me to grant you a wish, master. Don´t say the lamp is not yours. Just steal it. That´s what everybody does. I will shrink it so you can stow it in your satchel. I like you and will be happy to serve you.

Usted me cae bien. Con gusto le serviré.

Arley

I don´t think the Shyboys will give you much trouble. They aren´t ambitious. They had a golden chance to become rich and powerful when the prime minister of Fairyland was dead set on buying this house. They practically gave it to him for nothing. I think the most they will ask you to do is go for Chinese food or pick up a pizza once in a while.

Batish Afsoon

But what I want is to show my skills off! I want to build breathtaking palaces.Find incredible treasures. Carry off harems full of stunning women. Win bloody battles against invincible armies singlehanded. Make formidable enemies bite the dust.

Arley

In that case I will try to oblige you. I´m not much into fighting. And I´m too romantic not to be monogamous. But there is one thing you could do for me. I´ll steal the lamp for a few minutes to ask you to bring me some magic pencils I would treasure. I have no idea where they are, but maybe -

Batish Afsoon

Forgive me for interrupting you, master, but I have already put two in your satchel. One I took from a little fairy´s playroom and the other from the fellow who is snoring downstairs in the basement. As for the others, first I must ask you if you really want me to mess up your life. Seeing as you seem to be the kind that values a book of verses, a jug of wine, a loaf of bread and the right company under a tree, I feel I should ask you this.

Arley

Well, I´m just like you said, except a jug of lemonade slushies would do better. But why would I be messing up my life?

Batish Afsoon

You see, I would have to take the pencils from some characters who wouldn´t doubt to come after you for having robbed them. The third pencil, for instance, is in the hands of individuals who are at this moment in a cave older than History being instructed in the dark arts by the devil in person.

Arley

Oh. The devil, is it? Well, I don´t want to steal anything. Maybe I can bargain with these people. Where can I find them?

Vaya. El demonio, ¿eh? Bueno, yo no quiero robar nada. Tal vez pueda negociar con esa gente. ¿Dónde les puedo encontrar?
