Catering for Halloween / Catering para la Noche de Difuntos

Vinny / Vicentico

And to sum up all I´ve said, I highly recommend this restaurant to you. Not only is it the best place in town, eating there is an experience you will never forget. So I´ve come directly to tell you all about it because I know you are sort of a gourmet.

Half an hour later... / Media hora despues...

The Poultice Closed by Alpin / La Cataplasma Cerrada por Alpin

Alpin

It´s been a peerless pleasure. I promise to be back as soon as you open.

Ha sido un placer inigualable. Prometo volver en cuanto volváis a abrir.

And a few days later... / Y unos días despues...

Heather / Brezo

We´ve been at this for 12 nights, so only 31 more nights without sleeping and at four hundred euros the pea we will have earned back the 17 thousand euros Mum and Dad spent at The Poultice. Take heart, Thistle. Think of all the fairies who will be able to let themselves be kidnapped so you and I can rescue them.

Thistle / Cardo

Aren´t we being short changed here? I thought the peas were worth six hundred. Oh, I see, the other two hundred are the profit the restaurant owner makes.

Jamie Urtzison / Santichu Semeurtzi

I´m sorry, little girls. I can´t buy your peas anymore. A changeling has folded up my business.

Lo siento, niñas. Ya no puedo comprar vuestros guisantes. Un cambiadito me ha buscado la ruina.

Michael

But why didn´t you tell him you reserved the right to refuse admission?

Jamie Urtzison / Santichu Semeurtzi

He came with Death´s coachman, who told me I was a racist for not allowing changelings in my restaurant and who added that if I didn´t take his kid, he would take me for a ride. So I thought it would be prudent to let them in. But when they had finished half of what I had stored in my cupboard, I tried to make them leave. Then Handsome Darcy appeared and asked me very kindly to let his brother finish his lunch, and since there is no saying no to Handsome Darcy…well, they even got me to agree to be paid with one fairy pence, which, as you must know, are inexistent, and only an illusion of the prime minister's! And now what can we do? Go on welfare? Is there fairy welfare?

Fergus

My son is going to give a Halloween party. He leaves everything for the last minute and to the date he still hasn´t seen to providing refreshments. Could you cater for him? Michael, be kind to this penniless cook and hire him immediately.

Titania

Yes, hire him. And buy our peas. Oberon and I are already dressed for the party. Get a load of our autumn outfits.

Sí, contrátale. Y compra nuestros guisantes.

Michael

I leave things till the last minute in the hope of not having to give the party. I haven´t got a red cent. I can only pay Santichu with a leprechaun shoe, only one, not even a pair. But it will take him anywhere in a jiffy if he doesn´t mind hopping all the way there.

Oberon

I guess that puts an end to our pea business. Perhaps it is for the best. The girls look awfully ugly with those frightful dark circles under their eyes. You´d think they were scarecrows.

Titania

We´ll keep the peas in the safe as if they were emeralds. Sooner or later someone will want them. As for the girls, I told them they could take naps in the afternoons. After all they have nothing better to do. And as for looking like scarecrows, that way we save on Halloween costumes.

Jamie Urtzison / Santichu Semeurtzi

I´ll start searching for vittles right now. I imagine I will be able to get hold of a few pumpkins, but since it hasn´t rained much, I doubt there will be enough mushrooms and the squirrels must have gathered all the nuts by now. What I can guarantee are the drinks. Alpin didn´t visit my cellar. I have countless varieties of mead and whole barrels of wheat grass juice.

Ahora mismo me pongo a buscar materia prima.

Michael

But the party is at night. Wheat grass juice! Troy will burn! I see it coming!

¡Arde Troya! ¡Ya lo estoy viendo venir!

Fergus and Leafies / Fergus y los Hojuela

Hooray!

¡Hurrah!

Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Callisto / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Calisto

Nauta

I missed seeing you in September because I was on holiday in a cabin in the woods with my wife. We made friends with some bears who insisted I feature Ursa Major and Ursa Minor on this blog. I want to do it before they go hibernate, which will happen any day now. So here goes.

There once was a beautiful young lady named Callisto who caught the eye of Zeus, king of the gods. He managed to trick her into having an affair with him. This put her in the black list of Hera, Zeus´ wife.

Now Callisto was a friend of the moon goddess Artemis, and to avoid what might happen if Hera confronted Callisto, Artemis had the great idea of turning the poor girl into a bear. But before that, Callisto had given birth to a son by Zeus.

Hera eventually discovered that Callisto had become a bear. By then, Callisto´s son, whose name was Arcas, was old enough to go hunting, and Hera would have watched him unwittingly shoot his mother without blinking if Zeus hadn´t intervened.

What Zeus did was grab hold of mother and child and toss them up to the heavens where they landed among the stars. There Callisto made friends with Helice, who had been one of Zeus´ nannies and whom he had allowed to live in the firmament as a reward for having looked after him.

Both agreed to share a constellation with the form of a bear. It is called Ursa Major because Helice´s sister, Cynosura, occupied a smaller but also bear-shaped constellation, known as Ursa Minor. As for Arcas, he went to live among a group of stars named after Bootes, the agricultural god of the plough.

Two images of constellations follow, one of the Big Bear and another of the Little Bear, who is with a third constellation called Draco,  the dragon. The famous North Star, also called Polaris, is part of the second. It is fundamental in celestial navigation because it is the only star that stands quite still.

And today, instead of a quiz, a song that is quite an experience.

The Bear Hunt Song

We´re going on a bear hunt! We´re going on a bear hunt!
We´re going to catch a big one! We´re going to catch a big one!
I´m not scared! I´m not scared! Been there before! Been there before!
Oh, no! Oh, no! Long grass! Long grass! Long, wavy grass! Long wavy grass!
Can´t go over it! Can´t go over it! Can´t go under it! Can´t go under it!
Can´t go around it! Can´t go around it! Got to go through it! Got to go through it! Swish, swish, swish ,swish, swish!
We´re going on a bear hunt! We´re going on a bear hunt!
We´re going to catch a big one! We´re going to catch a big one!
I´m not scared! I´m not scared!Been there before! Been there before!
Oh, no! Oh, no! Mud! Mud! Thick squelchy mud! Thick squelchy mud!
Can´t go over it! Can´t go over it! Can´t go under it! Can´t go under it!
Can´t go around it! Can´t go around it! Got to go through it! Got to go through it!
Squelch, squelch, squelch, squelch, squelch!
We´re going on a bear hunt! We´re going on a bear hunt!

I´m not scared! I´m not scared! Been there before! Been there before!
Oh, no! Oh, no! A river! A river! A deep swirling river! A deep swirling river!
Can´t go over it! Can´t go over it! Can´t go under it! Can´t go under it!
Can´t go around it! Can´t go around it!Got to go through it! Got to go through it!
Splash, splash, splash, splash, splash!
We´re going on a bear hunt! We´re going on a bear hunt!
We´re going to catch a big one! We are going to catch a big one!
I´m not scared! I´m not scared! Been there before! Been there before!
Oh, no! Oh, no! A cave! A cave! A dark, gloomy cave! A dark gloomy cave!
Can´t go over it! Can´t go over it! Can´t go under it! Can´t go under it!
Can´t go around it! Can´t go around it! Got to go through it! Got to go through it!
Clock, click, clock, click, clock!
We´re going on a bear hunt! We´re going on a bear hunt!
We´re going to catch a big one! We´re going to catch a big one!
I´m not scared! I´m not scared! Been there before! Been there before!
What´s that? What´s that?
Two furry ears! Two furry ears!
Two sharp teeth! Two sharp teeth!
It´s a bear! It´s a bear!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!
Quickly, through the cave! Click, clock, click, clock, click!
Through the river! Splash, splash, splash, splash, splash!
Through the mud! Squelch, squelch, squelch, squelch, squelch!
Through the long grass! Swish, swish, swish swish, swish!
Run quickly!
Close the door! Bang!

Under the Tables / Bajo las Mesas

…they have not been as wary.

…no han sido tan precavidos.

And in the basement of the posh restaurant the moles Rupert and Swithin are learning everything about people who think the world should belong to only one of them.

Rupert / Ruperto

There is a gang of kids at Titania´s table that is making me deaf. I don´t know why people bring kids to restaurants like this one. They don´t know how to behave. I´ll bet they are breaking and soiling everything and sorely trying the patience of the other diners. I can´t take any more of this. I´m going to spy on someone else.

No saben comportarse.

Swithin / Suituno

I´m doing table three. It´s Adamina´s table. The poor thing has a terrible depression.

Yo estoy con la mesa tres. Es la de Adamina. Menuda depresión tiene la pobrecita.

Adamina

Being the free market fairy is not easy. It never has been. But now I feel it´s impossible. Supposedly, I have to fix with my invisible hand all the small mistakes and setbacks that moderate people make and suffer when they trade freely so that we can all benefit from this. But I am not dealing with moderate people. What abounds are fools, egotists and cads. This is getting to be too much for me.

Mr. Adam Smith

Then you are saying you would be happier if only one shameless fool had all the money and caused all the problems?

Mr. Thomas Robert Malthus

What she is saying is what I have always said. There are too many people, more every day, and there aren´t enough resources for everyone to be contented.

Adamina

What I am saying is that I don´t need fools, egotists and cads!

Rupert / Ruperto

Table two is conspiring against Neptune, the planet. Table four wants to melt down the Holy Grail to prepare a potion or make a necklace for somebody´s lady friend, I´m not sure which. And at table 5 we have Prime Minister Binky with what appears to be a know-it-all child. Is it that he is divorced and it is his turn to walk his son?

Swithin / Suituno

That is not Binky´s son. That is the famous wizard Merlin, who lives backwards in time and is younger every day. Binky went all the way to the South Pole to find him. That was when he crashed into the birthday cake of the English teacher whose holidays always go wrong.

Prime Minister Binky / Primer Ministro Binky

So you don´t want to be the headmaster of my school for explaining humans to fairies? But you have always been interested in humans. You even educated one so that he would rule the others.

That was cute while it lasted but it didn´t amount to much. I don´t like to have to say this but it could be that humans are beyond help.

Mr. Binky

What do you mean that it didn´t amount to much? People still remember this with reverence!

¿Cómo que no sirvió de mucho? ¡Todavía lo recuerdan con reverencia!

Merlin / Merlín

Yes, and now and again somebody tries to use it to further his or her ends. But the truth is that I have never really been a child before and I don´t want to pass on to the Great Beyond without having been one.

Mr. Binky

But it is now when you have the experience to do things really well.

Perhaps if I manage to be reborn. But right now, no. Now is when my body is at its most flexible. I feel as if I were made of rubber. And I want to dedicate the time I have left to figure ice skating. I will never have another chance to do this. That´s why you caught me training in the Arctic. I thought no one would come seeking for me there, but last summer the place was rather crowded. Hey, did the birthday boy sue you?

Mr. Binky

No, and I don´t think it is likely he will if he hasn´t by now. Although he is Irish, he is not the fighting kind. He only aspires to live in peace. Well, look here, if you reject my offer, I will have run out of ideas. Who can I turn to?

¿A quién puedo recurrir?

Swithin / Suituno

At table six is the hussy who tried to claim the verbal tenses. As far as I know she hasn´t a red cent to her name so the bloke she is with must have invited her. I have no idea who he is.

Rupert / Ruperto

Yes, you do. That is the pirate Boogerbeard. The one that means to deal in fuels and other resources from now on. Basiliska managed to catch his fancy and she has persuaded him to change his look. He has had his teeth fixed and the plastic surgeons have stuffed silicone into his lips. He has also shaved off the repulsive beard he used to wipe his nose with and has had surgery performed on his nose. Right now he is under a get gorgeous spell. Every hour that passes he gets more attractive. He thinks that way people will forget who he is and how he made his money.

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

If I´m goodlooking as well as rich, no one will snub me. Everyone will want to be like me. I´ll be a great role model.

Si además de rico soy guapo, nadie me toserá. Todos querrán ser como yo. Seré un gran ejemplo a seguir.

Basiliska

You  already look twenty years younger. And before dinner is over, you will be able to table hop and say hi to Titania just to make Oberon jealous.

Boogerbeard / Barbamocos

What I am going to do is buy that depressed broad a drink. Waiter! The largest and most expensive glass of finest quality wheat grass juice available!

Angelino
We don´t recommend taking wheat grass juice at night, sir. It´s pure chlorophyll and people get so hyper that…

Rupert / Ruperto

If he treats the free market fairy to that juice, she might react and feel up to putting him in jail. Titania´s kids must have left. They have just handed Oberon the bill. Seventeen thousand euros. That´s not so expensive if you consider all the people who have been eating at this table. But his wife isn´t too happy.

Titania

Six hundred euros for a pea? Who ordered that pea?

¿Seiscientos euros por un guisante? ¿Quién pidió ese guisante?

Heather / Brezo

I did. I ordered it because I felt it had to be the least expensive ítem on the menu. I´m sorry. The menu didn´t have the prices on it.

He sido yo.

It´s not your fault, honey. First class restaurants don´t have prices on menus so guests won´t feel obliged to order inexpensive food. Sometimes they don´t even have them on the host´s menu.

Titania

Listen, waiter, come over here and explain to me what can be so special about a pea as to make it worth six hundred euros.

Oiga, camarero, venga usted aquí y explíqueme qué clase de guisante vale seiscientos euros.

Angelino

It´s not just any pea, madam. An authentic princess has slept on it.

Titania

My daughter has eaten a filthy pea somebody slept on?

Angelino

There are piles of mattresses between the pea and the princess. But they charge so much for it because the princess says she spends the whole night tossing and turning over it.

Titania

Nonsense! No pea can make me sleepless. Girls, tonight we all sleep on peas. Maybe we can get some of our money back selling them to the owner of this restaurant tomorrow. If we have to frequent this place to keep the darksiders who gather here under control, we are sure to go broke. Oberon, we must advice the fairy people to take all manner of precautions to avoid being kidnapped by humans at all costs. We won´t have any money left to pay ransoms. And you can also tell Binky to send Merlin back to the Arctic and to forget about his school.
