Achilles' Horses / Los caballos de Aquiles

To make up for lost time, today, the story of the horses of Achilles. 

Para ganar tiempo perdido, hoy la historia de los caballos de Aquiles. 

The Greek hero Achilles had three famous horses.Two were immortal. They were the offspring of the harpy Podarge and the god of the Western wind, Zephyrus. Poseidon gave these horses to Achilles' parents, Peleus and Thetis, as a wedding gift and they in turn gave them to their son.

El héroe griego Aquiles tenía tres caballos famosos. Dos eran inmortales. Eran hijos de la harpía Podarge y de Céfiro, dios del viento del oeste. Poseidón regaló estos caballos a los padres de Aquiles, Peleo y Tetis cuando estos se casaron. Y ellos se los regalaron a su vez a su hijo. 

The horses were called Xanthus and Balius. Xanthus was of a yellowish white. And he could speak, though only to prophesy. Xanthus prophecied Achilles' death. Balius was black with white spots. Both horses could cry and broke into tears when Achilles' friend  Patroclus died.

Estos caballos se llamaban Janto y Balio. Janto era bayo, de un blanco amarillento. Y podía hablar, pero sólo para profetizar. Janto profetizó la muerte de Patroclo. Balio era negro con manchas blancas. Ambos caballos podían llorar y estallaron en lagrimas cuando murió Patroclo. 

Achilles third horse was called Pedasus. This horse was not immortal. He was killed in battle, but when he died, the gods allowed his spirit to carry the spirit of Patroclus to the isle of the blessed and there both can be found spending their afterlives. 

Aquiles poseía un tercer caballo. Se llamaba Pédaso. Este caballo no era inmortal. Murió en batalla, pero los dioses permitieron que su espíritu llevase al espíritu de Patroclo a la isla de los benditos y allí siguen ambos disfrutando de la vida después de la vida. 

The mini myth of Summanus / El mini mito de Sumano

 

Long time no see. 

Hace mucho que no nos vemos. 

Today, I want to tell you about Summanus. 

Hoy os quiero hablar de Sumano.

Summanus was a god of Etruscan origin who had his own temple in Rome. Originally, his image could be found in a temple dedicated to Jupiter. One day, lightning struck the temple, landing on the head of the image of Summanus. The head fell into the river Tiber where it was eventually found by people who believed that all this meant Summanus wanted his own temple. And they gave it to him. Summanus was god of nocturnal thunder. He didn't make noise at night to molest or frighten people. He made it to warn people that storms and floods might be about to happen and that they should get up and go keep safe anything they valued that could be 

damaged by these natural disasters. Grateful people would offer Summanus cakes shaped like wheels. 

I love those cakes, which are called summanalia. I think my wife and I should make some one of these days. We will need flour, milk and honey. 

Sumano era un dios de origen etrusco que tenía su propio templo en Roma. Originalmente, su imagen se encontraba en un templo dedicado a Júpiter. Un día, un rayo cayó sobre ese templo, concretamente sobre la cabeza de Sumano que se desprendió y acabó en el río Tiber. Las personas que encontraron la cabeza pensaron que esto significaba que Sumano debía tener su propio templo, y le hicieron uno. Sumano era el dios de los truenos nocturnos. No metía ruido para molestar ni para asustar a la gente. Lo metía para advertir a los mortales que era probable que hubiesen tormentas e inundaciones y que sería mejor que se levantasen y pusiesen a salvo todo lo que valoraban y que podrían estropear estos desastres naturales. En agradecimiento, los devotos de Sumano le ofrecían pasteles con forma de rueda. Me encantan esos pastelitos, que se llaman sumanalias. Creo que mi mujer y yo deberíamos hacer algunos un día de estos. Necesitaremos harina, leche y miel.
