The Poet C.J. Dennis / El poeta C.J. Dennis

The Australian Poet Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis was known as the laureate of the larrikin. A larrikin is a young person who is uncultivated and rowdy but good at heart. Though many considered them next to vandals and they were often members of street gangs, curiously police records show that most of these kids had attended Catolic schools. Most larrikins were teenagers, and not all were boys. Girls could be just as antisocial, vulgar and violent. However, many Australians like to think that larrikinism is part of their culture. Although Dennis wrote verses about these youngsters, he was no child of the streets himself. His father owned hotels and he was raised by his great-aunts. His first job was as a solicitor's clerk and later he became a journalist. His most famous work is a novel in verse called "The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke." He also wrote "The Glugs of Gosh," a book of satirical verses that criticized free trade, conformism and beaurocracy, that wasn't a great success because most of his public didn't understand it.  Al poeta australiano Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis se le conoce como el laureado de los larrikins. Un larrikin es una persona joven, inculta y escandalosa, pero de buen corazón. Aunque muchos consideraban a los larrikins nada más que unos vándalos y muchas veces eran miembros de pandillas callejeras, curiosamente las fuentes policiales informan que la mayoría de estos chicos procedían de escuelas católicas. La mayoría de los larrikins eran adolescentes, y no todos eran chicos. Las chicas podían ser tan antisociales, vulgares y hasta violentas como sus hermanos. Pero a la mayoría de los australianos les gusta pensar que el larrikinismo forma parte de su cultura. Aunque Dennis escribió versos sobre estos jóvenes, los orígenes de este poeta no eran típicos de un larrikin. No era un niño de la calle. Su padre era dueño de hoteles y le criaron sus tías abuelas. Trabajó primero como administrativo en un despacho de abogados y luego fue periodista. Su obra más famosa es una novela en verso titulada "Las canciones de un tío sentimental." También escribió "Los Glugs de Gosh," libro de versos satíricos que ridiculizaban el comercio libre, el conformismo y la burocracia.
