Wedding Vocabulary / Vocabulario de Bodas

Don Quijote

I´ve read in the papers that the Prince of Wales' son  is to marry tomorrow. Isn´t King Arthur from Wales? Is it his grandson that is marrying? All this reminds me that I had a reason to learn English that I can´t recall and it has something to do with something I have to do.

Sancho Panza

It´s probably of no importance. Why don´t we review wedding vocabulary? English weddings are complicated.

Seguro que no tiene importancia. ¿Por qué no repasamos vocabulario de bodas? Las bodas de los ingleses son complicadas.

Nauta

We Romans would rather not marry before June. From June to December you can marry, but it isn´t convenient to marry before that. In Britania, however, I think they liked to marry on the last day of April or the first of May.

Rosina

After hours of wandering through the thick of Minced Forest in search of true love...

Arley

Alpin, are you scared of spiders?

Alpin, ¿te dan miedo las arañas?

Alpin

Not since I was told most are edible. Look, Arley! A giant Easter egg! Could that be chocolate?

¡Mira, Arley! ¡Un huevo de Pascua gigante! ¿Será de chocolate?

Arley

That has to be the bunker we are looking for. Artemius said it was egg-shaped and half-buried and covered with moss and graffiti. I can´t see a door. Well, where there are no doors, maybe they aren´t necessary. We can try walking through the walls but it would be rude not to knock first, so I will give a symbolic knock although it’s not likely anyone will hear.

Rosina

Hi. There is food on the other side of the building. And I´ve left a saltshaker there.

Hola. Hay comida al otro lado del edificio. Y he dejado un salero.

Arley

Thank you. I – I didn´t come here to eat. I wanted to tell you that... your voice is lovely. I- I don´t know if I am doing this properly but I will tell you right out that I think I´m in love with you and I would like to get to know you better.

Gracias. Yo… yo no he venido aquí a comer.

Rosina

Why, I´m flattered! And what would you like to know about me?

¡Vaya! Me siento halagada. ¿Y qué te gustaría saber de mi?

Arley

I would like to know everything. Like what your name is, to begin with. So I can sing your praises properly.

Me gustaría saberlo todo. Tu nombre, para empezar. Y para poder cantar tus alabanzas correctamente.

Rosina

Women in red cloaks are almost always named after roses. You can call me Rosina. But if you really liked me, you wouldn't need to know much else. As a hooded genius I am mysterious and a true lover of mystery never attempts to unveil it.

Arley

I had never thought of mystery that way, but what you say sounds true. Perhaps I should just adore you. I don´t know what to say. I was hoping I could come visiting and...

Esperaba poder venir a visitarte y….

Rosina

If you want to come into my house, you can. But you must put on a cloak with a hood first. And once you are inside, you must not speak to anybody, or interfere with what they are doing, or try to find out what they are about. Nobody speaks to anybody in there, or meddles in the affairs of others. We value our privacy over most else.

Arley

I couldn´t speak to you then? No? Could I at least contemplate you?

¿No podría hablar contigo entonces? ¿Al menos podría contemplarte?

Rosina

Everybody in there is all covered up and the only one that doesn´t wear black or grey is me. So I guess you could know which one I was. It´s not the usual thing, but if I don't complain, no one will stop you. However, I suspect you´d have other things to do than stare at me all day without saying a word. Not just anyone could do that. I don´t think I myself could. Are you ready for something like that? Look, I have to go. I´ve already spoken with you longer than I have with anyone in ages.

Arley

In ages? Don´t you ever need to speak to anybody?

¿En siglos? ¿Nunca necesitas hablar con nadie?

Rosina

In fact, as far as I know, I might be the only one in there that does. I do need to speak to someone, for about two or three minutes every month or so. But once I have, I´m delighted to go back home and be by myself for another month. Listen, maybe you should give yourself time to think about all this. We´ll part as friends, and if you ever need me, you know where to find me. Here, have an apple. I grow bio-magical crops. My latest apples have turned out shrimpy and rather pale but they are marvellously healthy.

Arley

Goodbye, Rosina, I´ll be back in a month.

Adios, Rosina. Volveré en un mes.

Vinny

Now you have a girlfriend?

¿Ahora tienes novia?

Arley

I think we decided to be friends for the moment.

Alpin

She talks too much. About time she´s gone. I finished eating up everything here a while ago. Look, if you decide to dump her, you are more than justified. I didn´t tell you before because you were like so in love with her, but the truth is there are better cooks. Well, maybe she doesn´t do the cooking herself but then that might mean she cooks even worse. Are you going to eat that apple?

Esa habla demasiado. ¿Te vas a comer esa manzana?

Vinny

Eat it, poet child. It is magical. It might cure your allergy for at least a year.

Arley

Arrggh! I must have grown allergic to apples!

¡Arrggh! ¡Debo haberme vuelto alérgico a las manzanas!

Alpin

Help! The Cucullati have poisoned Arley!

¡Socorro! ¡Los cuculatos han envenenado a Arley!

Noah again, with unicorns / Noé otra vez, con unicornios

What happened to the unicorns? It seems they became extinct when they acted silly instead of boarding Noah´s Ark in good time. Click on The Unicorn Song to hear the Irish Rovers tell you all about this.

Above, a unicorn from what we think is a fifteenth century tapestry and below more unicorns by Moreau. We found both pictures on Images from the Internet.

Football Crazy / Loco por el football

Below are the lyrics of a song about a football fanatic named Paul who lost what little sense he had upon joining a football club. Click on Football Crazy to hear the tune, but in this version the fellow's name is Jock McGraw. The original version of this song was written circa 1885 by Glaswegian James Curran. It may be the oldest football song ever.

Vincent´s French Toast Recipe / La receta de torrijas de Vicente

Heather

Vicente Cañas handed in a recipe for French Toast. We're going to make 700 peices of it so Alpin can enjoy them with us too. But we have to be very quiet while we do this so he won't show up before we are done and eat them before we can serve them at a prettily and properly set table.

Torrijas are a typical Easter sweet in Spain.

Nauta

The garden of the Hesperides is an orchard that Hera, the queen of the gods, has in the west of the Mediterranean Sea, close to Cádiz, which is where the ancient Greeks believed the sun set every evening. In this garden there is a tree that grows golden apples and that was the wedding gift Gea, the goddess of the Earth, gave Hera when she agreed to marry Zeus, the king of the gods.

Three maidens watch over this orchard. They are known as the Hesperides because their maternal grandfather is Hesperus, the evening star. Their father is the enormous Atlas, who is big even for a giant, and whose job is to hold the sky up on his shoulders so that it won´t fall on the earth. The dragon Ladon, who never sleeps, helps the Hesperides guard the apples, since many have tried to steal them. They say this dragon has a hundred heads but the person who does our illustrations flatly refused to draw more than one.

The Hesperides love weddings, and when invited always show up just before the bridal night begins, when the sun is about to set, to wish the bride and groom good luck. If you wish to call each by her name, you may call them Hesperia (Evening), Erytheia (the Redhead) and Asterope (the Starry-Faced). And aside from being good at gardening, the Hesperides are famous for their beautiful singing.

Arley in love / Arley enamorado

Arley

O Love, wrapped in red petals!
Say! What is in the heart of the rose?
Powdered gold that will torment my fragile breath
Or a throne where my desire already does repose?

¡O Amor, envuelto en rojos pétalos!
¡Di!

Alpin

Like I said. Nuts. How can you fall in love with someone you've never seen? Maybe even with something you've never seen? How can you tell that inside that cloak there isn't a monster plotting to eat you alive? Things like that can happen in forests. Fairy tales give warning.

Arley

I'll have time enough to fall out of love if I don't like what I find. It's decided. I'm entering the depths of the forest in search of  my true love. And I won't leave a stone unturned till I find her.

Alpin

Well, if you can´t be dissuaded, I just might tag along with you. But only in case the cucullati have left more free food around. By the way, when you find your sweetie, do me a favor and ask her to be so kind as to please leave a saltshaker next to those hard-boiled eggs they give out. I don´t want to have to bother to remember to bring one with me. Plus I hate carrying things.

Arley

Ok, I´ll do that. Let´s go.

Vale. Lo haré. Vámonos.

Pippa

Pippa

Pippa´s Song / La Canción de Pippa

The year's at the spring,  / Es la primavera del año
And day's at the morn; / Y es el alba del día
Morning 's at seven; / Amanece a las siete
The lark's on the wing; / La alondra vuela alada
The snail's on the thorn; / El caracol está en el espino
God's in His heaven— / Dios está en su cielo-
All's right with the world! / ¡todo va bien en el mundo!

Robert Browning

About Felippa / Sobre Felipa

"Pippa's Song" is from poet Robert Browning´s closet play "Pippa Passes." Pippa´s job is to wind silk from silkworm cocoons onto bobbins. She has only one day off her job a year. On the morning of this day she passes by places where there are people that she believes to be good and happy. In truth, they are all rather sinister figures. Simply by passing by, she reminds them that there is a moral order. That is, according to Browning, the job of poets in this world. The portrait of Pippa above, is by Sir John Everett Millais.

Browning loved Italy and "Pippa Passes" takes place in Asolo, which is near Treviso, in the north of Italy.

Li'l Red Riding Hood / Caperucilla Roja

This song about Little Red Riding Hood is sung by Texan Domingo Samudio, better known as Sam the Sham, lead singer of  the Pharoahs. You have the lyrics below so you can sing with Sam and the pharoahs.

Li'l Red Riding Hood (Caperucilla Roja)

Owoooooooo!  (¡Auuuuuuuuuu! )
Who's that I see walkin' in these woods? (¿A quién veo caminando por este bosque?)
Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood. (¡Pero si es Caperucita Roja!)
Hey there Little Red Riding Hood, (Eh, hola, Caperucita Roja.)
You sure are looking good. (¡Pero qué guapa estás!)
You're everything a big bad wolf could want.
Listen to me. (Escúchame.)

Little Red Riding Hood (Caperucita Roja,)
I don't think little big girls should (yo no creo que las niñitas mayores deban...)
Go walking in these spooky old woods alone. (ir caminando solas por este bosque tenebroso.)
Owoooooooo! ¡Auuuuuuu!

What big eyes you have,  (¡Qué ojos tan grandes tienes!)
The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad.
So just to see that you don't get chased (Así que para asegurarme de que no te persigan,)
I think I ought to walk with you for a ways. (creo que debería acompañarte por este camino.)

What full lips you have. (¡Qué labios tan gruesos tienes!)
They're sure to lure someone bad. (Seguro que atraen a alguien poco recomendable.)
So until you get to grandma's place (Así que hasta que llegues a casa de la abuelita...)
I think you ought to walk with me and be safe. (creo que deberías caminar junto a mí y estar a salvo.)

I'm gonna keep my sheep suit on (Voy a llevar bien puesto mi traje de cordero...)
Until I'm sure that you've been shown  (Hasta que esté seguro de haber demostrado...)
That I can be trusted walking with you alone.
Owoooooooo! (¡Auuuuuuu!)

Little Red Riding Hood (Caperucita Roja,)
I'd like to hold you if I could (me gustaría abrazarte si fuese posible.)
But you might think I'm a big bad wolf so I won't.
Owoooooooo! ¡Auuuuuuuu!

What a big heart I have-the better to love you with. (¡Qué corazón tan grande tengo, para amarte mejor!)
Little Red Riding Hood (Caperucita Roja,)
Even bad wolves can be good. (hasta los lobos feroces pueden ser buenos.)
I'll try to be satisfied just to walk close by your side. (Intentaré conformarme con caminar junto a tí.)
Maybe you'll see things my way before we get to grandma's place.

Little Red Riding Hood  (Caperucita Roja,)
You sure are looking good (¡pero qué guapa estás!)
You're everything that a big bad wolf could want.
Owoooooooo! I mean baaaaaa! Baaa? (¡Auuuuuuu! Es decir, ¡beeeeeee! ¿Beee?)

Teenage Queen / Reina Adolescente

Ballad of a Teenage Queen

(Dream on, dream on teenage queen prettiest girl we've ever seen)
There's a story in our town
Of the prettiest girl around
Golden hair and eyes of blue
How those eyes could flash at you (How those eyes could flash at you)
Boys hung 'round her by the score
But she loved the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen, prettiest girl we've ever seen)

She was tops in all, they said
It never once went to her head
She had everything it seems
Not a care, this teenage queen (Not a care, this teenage queen)
Other boys could offer more
But she loved the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on, teenage queen, you should be a movie queen)

He would marry her next spring
Saved his money, bought a ring
Then one day a movie scout
Came to town to take her out (Came to town to take her out)
Hollywood could offer more
So she left the boy next door working at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on, teenage queen, see you on the movie screen)

Very soon she was a star
Pretty house and shiny car
Swimming pool and a fence around
But she missed her old home town (But she missed her old home town)
All the world was at her door
All except the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen, saddest girl we've ever seen)

Then one day the teenage star
Sold her house and all her cars
Gave up all her wealth and fame
Left it all and caught a train (Left it all and caught a train)
Do I have to tell you more
She came back to the boy next door who worked at the candy store

(Now this story has some more, you'll hear it all at the candy store)

The Cucullata / La Cuculata

Alpin

He ate her up! I tell you he ate her up!

Michael

What is going on here?

¿Qué está pasando aquí?

Artemius

These ****** kids have been rioting in the woods again. And now this **** kid says he has seen Little Red Riding Hood’s ghost.

Alpin

Yes, she got herself eaten by the wolf and now her ghost wanders around the forest floating in the air and terrorizing poor lost kids like us in a pathetic attempt to warn them to beware of the wolf.

Artemius

That´s a ******* lie! I have the wolves under control. I feed them during the winter so they won´t come out searching for food.

Alpin

I tell you I saw her! Maybe her intentions were good, but she doesn’t know how to do it. She´s terrorized us with her little cloak and hood, all red so you won’t notice how soaked it is in blood that springs from where the wolf bit her. Her cloak is dark and hollow inside, with no one in it. Well, with her ghost in it.

¡Qué la he visto!

Artemius

What do you have to say about this, kid?

¿Y tú qué dices de esto, niño?

Arley

I…I saw her too, but…she had a very sweet voice and she offered us an apple.

Artemius

Why didn´t you say that in the first place? That wasn't Little Red Riding Hood! That was the doorkeeper of the cucullati.

¡Acabaramos! Esa no era Caperucita Roja. ¡Eso era la portera de los cuculatos!

Michael

The what?

¿Los qué?

Nauta

The hooded geniuses. There are genii cucullati in your forest?

Los genios encapuchados. ¿Hay genios cuculatos en tu bosque?

Artemius

Well, yes. There is a colony of cucullati in the depths of the forest. They don´t cause any problems but they don’t like to have to deal with other people. They leave food in the surroundings of their bunker for those who are lost in the woods, although some say they do it so no one will approach them to ask for it. That could be so, because lately they also leave maps and compasses and even first aid kits.

Only the one with the red hood sometimes approaches you and offers you one of her apples. They are magic apples. If you eat one, you are sure to be in good health for at least a year. But she has little to say and vanishes very quickly. I call her the doorkeeper of the cucullati because she is the only one that at least sometimes answers when you call.
