Texas and the Devil / Tejas y el Diablo
Today a traditional song about the rigours of Texas, a place which is supposed to have been created by the Devil himself. Don't disdain this song. It teaches a lot of vocabulary and warns you to avoid a lot of vermin. You may have been pricked by a cactus and almost everyone has heard of scorpions, but did you know that a type of flea called a jigger exists and that it does its harm getting under your skin? Or that the horns of steer are longer in Texas? And that there is a local type of hare? And there's lots more to learn. Below, a version of the song in English and further below our not too free translation of it.And below all that, you can listen to a funny man who clowns a bit before he finally gets down to really singing the song.
THE DEVIL MADE TEXAS
Oh, the devil in hell they say he was chained,
And there for a thousand years he remained;
He neither complained nor did he groan,
But decided he’d start up a hell of his own,
Where he could torment the souls of men
Without being shut up in a prison pen;
So he asked the Lord if he had any sand
Left over from making this great land.
The Lord he said, “Yes, I have plenty on hand,
But it’s way down south on the Rio Grande,
And to tell you the truth, the stuff is so poor.
I doubt it will do for a hell anymore.”
The Devil went down and looked over the truck,
And he said if it came as a gift he was stuck,
For when he’d examied it carefully and well
He decided the place was too dry for a hell.
But the Lord to just get the stuff off His hands,
He promised the Devil He’d water the lands,
For He had some old water that was of no use,
A regular bog hole that stunk like the deuce.
So the contract was signed and the deed was given,
And the Lord went off to his spread up in heaven.
The Devil soon saw he had everything he needed
To make a good hell and I’ll say he succeeded.
He scattered tarantulas over the road,
Put thorns on the cactus and horns on the toads,
He sprinkled the sand with millions of ants
So the man that sits down must wear soles on his pants.
He lengthened the horns of the Texas steer,
And added an inch to the Jack rabbit’s ear,
He put water puppies in all of the lakes,
And under the rocks he put rattlesnakes.
He hung thorns and brambles on all of the trees,
He mixed up the dust with jiggers and fleas.
The rattlesnake bites you, the scorpion stings,
The mosquito delights you by buzzing his wings.
The heat in the summer’s a hundred and ten,
Too cool for the devil and too hot for men,
So all who remained in that climate soon bore
Stings, cuts, bites, scratches and blisters galore.
He quickened the buck of the bronco steed
And poisoned the feet of the centipede.
The wild boar roams in the black chaparral...
It’s a hell of a place that we´ve got for a hell!
He planted red peppers beside every brook,
And Mexicans use them in all that they cook.
Just dine with a Mexican and you will shout,
“I’ve got hell on the inside as well as the out!”
EL DIABLO CREÓ TEJAS
El Diablo en el Infierno estuvo
encerrado,
rojas guindillas,
Que hacen las delicias de los mejicanos
cocinillas.

Of Green Lilacs and Gringos / De lilas verdes y gringos
These are lilacs. / Esto son lilas.
These are the first gringos. It helped that they wore geen.
Estos, los primeros gringos. Contribuyó que fuesen de verde.
Have you ever wondered why Mexicans call yankees "gringos?" It's because of a catchy nineteenth century song of Irish origin that U.S. soldiers must have sung to satiety during the Mexican-American War. The first words of the title of this song, Green Grow the Liliacs, were transformed into "gringo." For the lyrics of this song and a - we hope - singable free translation to the Spanish, and to hear the original song sung by Tom Roush, click on Green Grow the Lilacs.
By the way, we have already written about the importance of this war. Yes, in the post about anarchist and father of ecology Henry David Thoreau. Click on Henry to reread it.

Incantation of the Queimada / Conjuro de la Queimada
The queimada is a traditional drink typical of Galicia, where the scenery is lovely but the weather is rather damp. Made in a pot with aguardiente, which is a liquor called burning water and similar to schnapps, with sugar, and lemon and / or orange rind, the concotion is set on spectacular fire. Grains of coffee and slices of apples may be added to the brew, which is served hot, sometimes with the flames still flaming in the drinking cups. This drink is supposed to cleanse the drinker, freeing him or her from any spells he or she may be under. To obtain this result, one must recite the incantation of the queimada while the flames are retreating.
The incantation sounds rather mediaeval and is certainly a bit creepy, but it has a lot of quite colourful vocabulary and would probably be approved of by Harry Potter, once come of age. To read it, click on THE TERRORIFIC INCANTATION OF THE QUEIMADA.

Hello. Long time no see.
Hola. Hace mucho que no nos vemos.
Today I will tell you a very short story. It is sad, but curious. It's about a Trojan word that got into dictoniaries of English.
Do you know the old Spanish proverb that says that when you see your neighbour's beard on fire, you had better wet your own?
Well, this story reminds me of that saying.
Pues esta historia me recuerda ese dicho.
Ucalegon was a Trojan elder. He probably had a beard. He was a good friend of King Priam of Troy. His house was right next to this king's palace. So when the Greeks invaded the city and attacked the palace, they torched Ucalegon's house.
Today the word Ucalegon is used in English to refer to a neighbour whose house is on fire.
I hope this word will never be of use to you. Except maybe in a crossword puzzle.

Eyes and Looks / Ojos y Miradas
Oneila says her fellow snakes are airheads who don´t know how to work as a team and she´d be better off if someone plucked her out roots and all so she could slither off on her own.
Twoina thinks Oneila is an idiot. How is she going to lift the huge stone the well has for a lid without help?
Thrina thinks she has a better chance of finding something to eat while the others are busy arguing.
Forita wonders if it might not be possible to escape from the well going down instead of up. She is not sure how wells work, but would like to learn.
Etcetera. / Etcetera.
Meanwhile, the gorgon practices different ways of looking. It´s too dark for her to see her own reflection in the water, or she would become petrified herself.
