En un cuenco llameante
Llega bravo y arrogante.
¡Muerde, Dragón!
Sé prudente, ten cuidado,
Coge menos de un puñado.
¡Muerde, Dragón!
Si su lengua azul te lame,
Hará que tu boca clame.
¡Muerde, Dragón!
Pues se defiende si amenazas
Su dulce festín de pasas.
¡Muerde, Dragón!
Mas aunque feroz parezca,
Viene a celebrar la fiesta.
¡Muerde, Dragón!
No le temas, sé osado,
Su fuego pronto se habrá enfriado.
¡Muerde, Dragón!
Snap Dragon is a traditional game kids used to play on holidays like Christmas or Halloween. A bowl full of raisins was brought to the table, rum or brandy was showered on the raisins and then this was set on fire. The kids round the bowl would try to snatch raisins from the dragon, that is, the fire. If they managed to steal some, they would eat them immediately. Needless to say, some of the players burned their mouths or hands. But these players were called clumsy and the game went on while other, more able players, who knew how to avoid getting burned stole and ate raisins till the flames went out. In my parents' home, since we have always belonged to the Timorous Brotherhood, we fed the dragon instead of stealing from it. From a safe distance, we cast raisins into the flaming bowl. When the fire was out, we added the raisins to a dessert of ice cream and other dry fruits. Although back then the times were different and fire purifies everything, players had to wash their hands before touching the raisins they were to cast. While playing, some verses about the game are recited. We publish the original English verses below. Our translation to the Spanish can be found above.
Here he comes with flaming bowl,
Don't he mean to take his toll,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!
Take care you don't take too much,
Be not greedy in your clutch,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!
With his blue and lapping tongue
Many of you will be stung,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!
For he snaps at all that comes
Snatching at his feast of plums,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!
But Old Christmas makes him come,
Though he looks so fee! fie! fum!
Snip! Snap! Dragon!
Don't you fear him but be bold,
Out he goes, his flames are cold,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!
