BLA Christmas Charity Bazaar / Bazar de Navidad de las Damas Británicas

Titania

Hello! Have you seen my son Arley? I need to ask him if he knows where that changeling that was never exchanged is. You know who I mean. The unbearable boy who eats everything in sight and who may have been last seen at Michael Toora the leprechaun´s Halloween Party. It´s possible he disappeared before that. Arley sometimes plays with him, so he might know where he can be found.

¡Hola! ¿Habéis visto a mi hijo Arley?

I don´t want my subjects to think I´m not doing anything about this crisis. After all, I have a lot of people out there making sure not a stone is left unturned. But it occurred to me I might do something more personal, like ask my boy if he knows anything about this.

So, I flew to the city where Arley lives and landed in the car where he sleeps but he wasn´t there. I heard the lady who owns the car say she was on her way to the British Ladies Association Christmas Charity Bazaar and I thought, why not tag along?

I bought a three euro ticket at the entrance - of course, I could have sneaked in for free, but it is a good cause venue. And a nice gentleman told me that with my ticket I could participate in a raffle. There was quite a crowd around all the stalls, but I got to see all of them. There were toys, including table games at excellent prices, very slightly used clothes, books in English and Spanish, Christmas cards and ornaments, all sorts of white elephants and cakes and cookies and other sweets.

Above is a picture of what I bought. In it, you can see three cats. Most fairies don´t like cats. That is because most fairies are very small most of the time and cats reach out for anything that is small and moves and it can get to be very annoying. But I bought the cloth cats the way a human would buy cloth tigers. I was going to buy the little one with the painted eyes but I decided I wanted the three so they could live together. I also bought six recycled Christmas cards, a tiny salt figure of Saint Anthony for the gardens of my dollpalace, where it is always bright and sunny and there´s no risk that it will melt in the rain, a little white box with two doves and a blue flower that cost me ten cents for Heather, pink, yellow, green and chocolate fairy cakes for Thistle, a small apple pie for Arley and a pudding for Oberon. He doesn´t deserve it, but he will feel left out if I don´t give him anything and he so likes Christmas pudding.
I wasn´t able to have tea and sandwiches at the refreshment stand because all the tables were taken and I didn´t want to eat standing. I was a little tired. But I enjoyed the bazaar and mean to return next year. I suggest you go too. It´s good fun for a good cause. Well, have you seen Arley?

Bueno, ¿habéis visto a Arley?

How the Halloween Party Went /Como fue la fiesta de Halloween

Señora Estrella

Now that I am back from visiting my relatives in my hometown, I want you to tell me all about how the little green elf´s Halloween party went. Was it as terrible as it always is?

Don Quijote

I´m not sure. It may have been better and it may have been worse. It started off like it always does. First, Michael´s sister-in-law, the jealous merrow, arrived asking if her husband was already there and with whom, with her potent voice that shatters glass. To hear this lady scold, it doesn´t surprise me that men jump to their deaths when hearing sirens sing.

No estoy seguro.

Fortunately, her husband, Michael´s brother Finbar, arrived two minutes after she had. And even more fortunately, the dark man, Handsome Darcy the Irresistible, decided to grace us with his presence this year, The girls only had eyes for him and spend the whole evening dancing jigs around him, so Miss Lira couldn´t accuse any of them of trying to steal her Finbar, which I am told they sometimes do in front of her nose to tease her.

The poor Grogoch, so filthy and unkempt sent word that he couldn´t come to the party because three of his cows were calving that night, so Michael´s house smelled of rosemary and cinnamon instead of stinking like a crowded barn.

Garth, the Pookah, whose presence means sure trouble, is so bored sitting under his bridge waiting for lonely passersby to scare, that he has taken to knitting scarfs and sweaters and such and is so obessessed with his hobby that it looked like all he would do that night would be knit a cloak of a lovely merino yarn called purple broccoli with a green fringe for Uncle Niall, the Grey Man, Lord of the Mists.

Unfortunately, purple and green are the colours of the Ye Fay F.C., and that reminded people of the great match held last spring, where the said team beat the Sidhe Bang, F.C. two to one, thanks to the roman ghost, Artemius, Lord of the Forest.

The Minced Forest Leafies are all rabid supporters of the Ye fay - it was they who got Artemius to play for this team - and they got into an argument with the Grey Man, who is a Sidhe Bang Supporter and who got up and shouted that he would not wear a traitorous cloak for all he appreciated his nephew´s work. He asked the Pookah to knit him one in yellow and gold instead.

Garth said that he already had an hour´s worth of knitting done, and he would sooner take Brian Boru for a ride than start afresh. One of the leafies said yellow and gold were the colours of cowardice and avarice and that he couldn´t understand how the Grey Man was not ashamed to wear them.

The guests of one team began to fling insults and crudités at the guests of the other, and when he saw the first of his Belleek dinnerware flying, Michael said it was less dangerous to have fairy people discuss politics than football and decided it might be the right moment for King Oberon´s minister, Mr. Mungo John Binky, to clink his recycled glass goblet with his silver spoon and begin to make his first annual speech to the audience.

And they tarred and feathered him?

¿Y le brearon y cubrieron de plumas?

Don Quijote

Why, not at all! Michael´s father, Fergus, encouraged the guestss to listen to what Mr. Binky had to say and since he is quite an influential person , they settled down to listen. Mr. Binky spoke masterfully. Even beautifully. His English vowels were impeccable, he vocalized splendidly and argued passionately, like a matchless demagogue. To our surprise, in no time even the Leafies were cheering and applauding.

Michael turned to me and said that his party was going so well that there had to be something going very wrong.

And there was?

¿Y lo había?

Don Quijote

Yes, unfortunately. We looked about us to find a reason why even the Leafies, who have good reason to mistrust Binky, were pleased with him. And we found it.

And it was?

¿Y era...?

Don Quijote

There was food all over the place. It was evident the guests had eaten their fill. They looked really contented. But...

But what?

¿Pero qué?

Don Quijote

There was food all over the place. Tons of leftovers. And that could only mean one thing.

Eso. Que había comida por todas partes. Toneladas de sobras. Y eso sólo podía significar una cosa.

Señora Estrella

What?

¿Qué?

Don Quijote

That Alpin the Changeling was not at the party.

And where was he?

¿Y dónde estaba?

Don Quijote

That, Señora Estrella, was the question. And it was a question of seconds before somebody asked it out loud. And in no time it was being asked in this corner and that and suddenly there was a bloodcurling cry and I turned to where his mother, the beautiful demon bride sat and this is what she looked like:

Her husband, the terrible Messenger of Death, roared out Alpin´s name causing an earthquake in the Antipodes. But the child made no answer. There was no sign whatsoever that he might be somewhere about. Nobody knew a thing. And then, in the middle of an icy silence, the voice of Michael Toora was heard to say: "Now we have yet another thing to seek for."

Scorpio / Escorpio

Yes, I left two of my arms at home. Hey, there! I´m Scorpio! Better late than never! Better six-armed than unarmed! To begin with, I apologize for being late. I should have arrived in October. But it´s the hunting season, and I´ve been really very busy reminding hunters to be at least ecological. And now I´m going to say that my story is one of those tales of epic fights, like Leo and Cancer´s. But I think you´ll find mine has something special, because I fought for a good cause.

It all started with a vain and cruel giant named Orion. He was so tall that when his feet where at the bottom of the sea, his head remained above the water. He was also said to be the handsomest man ever. But that wasn´t enough for him.

Orion decided he also wanted the title of alltime bigtime hunter. And he figured the way to win it was to kill every existing animal before anyone else did. So, he went on a rampage.

But while he was about it, he attracted the attention of the sun god and the moon goddess, Apollo and Diana, who were excellent archers and also involved with hunting. Although they were hunters themselves, Apollo and Diana had a different way of understanding hunting. They felt it was stupid and cruel to exterminate animals just for the sake of killing them. And they decided to do something about Orion. That something was me.

I was asked to stop Orion. I saw how the survival of the animal kingdom depended on me and I gallantly rose to the challenge. A fight between the giant and myself was soon organized. I choose my sting for a weapon. Orion chose his club. When I stepped into the ring, I knew I had to be really quick, or Orion would bash me with his club and all would be lost.

We had a big fight. Noisy enough to attract the attention of Zeus, king of the gods. I dodged Orion´s club for hours, doing the only thing I could which was wear him out, and finally he tired befoe I did and I got my chance to bite him. He was a huge guy but I was a giant of a scorpion myself. So I had enough poison in me to knock him out permanently and that was the end of that.

Zeus enjoyed the combat so much that he gave me a place among the stars. He even put Orion´s ghost up there too, where he couldn´t do any more harm and served as a warning to other hunters that they would not be allowed to go too far.

And now, a word about my constellation. It´s a pretty big one. And it´s got lots of really shiny stars. My most famous star is Antares, which is so red that it rivals the planet Mars.

At the end of my tail are two stars, quite close together, that are known as the Cat´s Eyes.

Also part of my constellation are the cotton candy nebulosae...

and the insect or butterfly nebulosae. This last is one of the most complex we know of.

Ptolemy

Scorpio has several star clusters. Below is a picture of the Ptolemy Cluster, which is named after me. I´m Claudius Ptolemaeus, a famous first century BC astronomer who saw these stars with the naked eye.
