Coming through the rye / Cruzando el centeno

Here is one of those songs supposedly for children that children sing without knowing what they are singing about. Jenny, the heroine of this traditional Scottish song, is not precisely the kind of girl everyone approves of. But one can't deny she has her admirers.

Oh, Jenny’s all wet, poor body! / (Oh, Geno está toda mojada, pobrecita)
Jenny is seldom dry. / (Geno rara vez está seca)
She´s bedraggled all her petticoats / (Se ha embarrado todas las enaguas)
Coming through the rye! / (Cruzando el centeno)

Coming through the rye, poor body, / (Cruzando el centeno, pobrecita)
Coming through the rye, / (Cruzando el centeno)
She´s draggled all her petticoats / (Se ha embarrado las enaguas)
Coming through the rye! / (Cruzando el centeno)

If a body meets a body / (Si alguien se encuentra con alguien)
Coming through the rye / (Cruzando el centeno)
If a body kiss a body / (Si alguien besa a alguien)
Need a body cry? / (¿Alguien se ha de quejar?)

If a body meet a body /(Si alguien se encuentra con alguien)
Coming through the glen /(Cruzando la cañada)
If a body kiss somebody /(Si alguien besa a alguien)
Need all the world ken?

Coming through the grain / (Cruzando el grano)
If a body kiss a body / (Si alguien besa a alguien)
The thing's a body's ain / (Eso es asunto suyo)

Every lassie has her laddie / (Cada muchachita tiene su muchachito)
None, they say, have I / (Dicen que ninguno tengo yo)
But all the lads they smile at me / (Pero todos los chicos me sonrien)
When coming through the rye. / (Cuando cruzo el centeno)

Robert Burns

I made this song more popular. You can hear it properly sung in the original Scottish manner in the video below. The lyrics above were put in English by Michael Toora so you could understand them better. Yes, I´ve been in this blog before.

Turbulent pupils of 1E, we´ve created these rhymes to help you remember questions words, and most especially so you can tell one from another.

Who?” asked the owl. The answer was, “You!”

(“¿Quién?” preguntó el búho. La respuesta fue “¡Tú!”)

How?” asked the Indian chief. “How do you do?”

(“¿Cómo?” preuntó el jefe indio. “¿Cómo estás tú?”)

What?” asked the cat. The answer was, “That!”

(“¿Qué?” preguntó el gato. La respuesta fue, “¡Eso!”)

When?” asked the hen. The answer was, “At ten!”

(“¿Cuándo?” preguntó la gallina. La respuesta fue, “¡A las diez!”)

Where?” asked the bear. The answer was, “There!”

(“¿Dónde?” preguntó el oso. La respuesta fue, “¡Allí!”)

Why,” asked the fly, “can’t I have lemon pie?”

Whose?” asked the goose. “Whose are these shoes?”

(“¿De quién?” preguntó el ganso. “¿De quién son estos zapatos?”)

Which?” asked the witch. “I´ve poisoned one. But which?”

(“¿Cuál?” preguntó la bruja. “He envenenado una. ¿Pero cuál?”)

“They treat me like an object,” protested little Whom, following a preposition that entered the room.

Little home / Pequeño hogar

It´s a different kind of mythology I am here to tell you about this month. In truth I want to recommend a hilarious classic film starring the great Eddie Cantor. It is called "Roman Scandals."

They say things are cyclic. The song below served to cheer up those who had to move to tenements during the Great Depression. For once, read the comments about the video. They are all interesting and some have a lot to do with what is happening today, from the one about how the writer had to leave his/her home and move to a friend's garage but had never thought he/she would indentify with this old song to the one that explains how Warner Brothers preferred to include social realism in its musicals while other studios thought showing only luxury did more to uplift people´s spirits. What do you think?

From this film comes a famous quote: "The one without the parsley is the one without the poison." As usual, you have the lyrics of the song below with our Spanish translation, this time very literal.

When We Build a Little Home / Cuando constuyamos un pequeño hogar
You’ll always have a roof above you, / Siempre tendrás un techo encima
As long as there’s a sky. / Mientras exista el cielo
And if you have someone to love you, / Y si tienes alguién que te quiere,
You’re sure of getting by. / Seguro que te apañas bien.
You don’t need a lot of log and stone, / No necesitas muchos troncos ni piedras,
Build a home on happiness alone. / Construye un hogar sólo con felicidad.
With a thousand little stars, / Con miles de estrellitas,
We can decorate the ceiling; / Podemos decorar el techo,
With an optimistic feeling, / Con un sentimiento optimista,
We can build a little home. / Podemos construir un pequeño hogar.
Ev’ry single little dream / Cada pequeño sueño
Is a shingle or a rafter; / Es una teja de madera o una viga
We can paint the house with laughter / Podemos pintar la casa con risas
When we build a little home./ Cuando constuyamos un pequeño hogar.
It’s not a palace nor a poor-house, / Ni es un palacio ni es un hospicio,
But the rent is absolutely free; / Pero el alquiler es totalmente gratis,
This is my house, but it’s your house, / Esta es mi casa, pero también es tu casa,
If you’ll come and live with me. / Si te vienes a vivir conmigo.
With a carpet on the floor, / Con una alfombra en el suelo,
Made of buttercups and clover, / Hecha de narcisos y tréboles,
All our troubles will be over, / Todos nuestros males pasarán,
When we build a little home. / Cuando construyamos un pequeño hogar.
We can build a little home, / Podemos construir un pequeño hogar.
I’ve no real estate to sell you; / No tengo inmuebles que venderte,
All I want to do is tell you: / Lo único que quiero es decirte,
We can build a little home. / Que podemos construir un pequeño hogar.
If the children want to play, / Si los niños quieren jugar,
They can play away their childhood / Pueden pasar su niñez jugando
Where we build our little home. / Cuando construyamos nuestro pequeño hogar.
We’ll dine for hours ‘mid the flowers, / Cenaremos durante horas entre las flores
Eating apples from an apple tree. / Comiendo manzanas de un manzano,
We’ll take showers in the showers / Nos ducharemos durante los chubascos,
That the clouds bring from the sea. / Que las nubes traen del mar.
When we want to go to sleep, / Cuando queramos dormir,
While the weary world reposes, /Mientras el cansado mundo reposa,
We can make a bed of roses / Podemos hacernos un lecho de rosas
When we build a little home. / Cuando construyamos nuestro pequeño hogar.
I’m looking at a set of blueprints, / Estoy estudiando los planos
With which to build this home. / Con los que construiremos este hogar.
It’s got a lot of new improvements, / Tienen un montón de mejoras
The idea’s all my own.
I’ve got plans no builder would suspect, / Tengo planes que ningún constructor imaginaría,
I’m a kinda different architect.

The Busker / El músico ambulante

In a field, Alpin is about to down the breakfast Arley brought for himself and his little sister.

Alpin

You call this breakfast? An omelette in French bread and an apple?

¿A esto le llamas desayuno? ¿Un bocadillo de tortilla y una manzana?

Arley

You can also have my orange juice. The banana and the milk and the yoghourt are for the baby. I didn’t know you were going to have breakfast with us, Alpin.

Harpagophytum Small / Harpagofito Menudo

Hey, kids! Howse about my entertaining you while you enjoy your picnic? I only want some drinking water in exchange.

¡Eh, chicos!

Arley

I’m really sorry to say we don’t have any water, but –

Alpin

Hey, you! Why don’t you give us a taste of your ware? So we can tell if you are worth listening to.

Harpagophytum / Harpagofito

I said did she, she said I dooooooooo!

I said would sheeee! She said with youuuuu!

¡Ayer fui al pueblo a ver a la Mari!

La Mari me enseño a bailar-

Alpin

Whoa, ho, ho, ho! You call that singing? No wonder you’re a wandering minstrel. You probably get chased out of every town you stop at. And as an example of tough lowlife, you stink too. Why have you got a dragonfly tattooed on your arm instead of a scorpion?

¡Altoooooooo!

Harpagophytum Small / Harpagofito Menudo

You deny me a drink of water and you dare to criticize me? You should know better than others it’s a mistake to offend encountered fairies. Well, aside from water I need a monkey for my act. So I´m taking the baby.

¿Me negáis agua y os atrevéis a criticarme?

And before one could blink, Harpagophytum cut the ribbon that bound Arley to his sister and flew off with her.

And Arley all but fainted, but Alpin  had the presence of mind to yell...

Arley

You big idiot! She won't be of any use to you! She was born daft! She'll be a burden to you!

¡Tonto de baba! ¡Si no te va a servir de nada! ¡Es boba de nacimiento! ¡Será una carga para ti!

If the first of May... / Si el primero de mayo...

If the first of May had been an easier day this year, we would have published this post then. But better late than never.

A delicate fabric of bird song
Floats in the air,
The smell of wet wild earth
Is everywhere.

Red small leaves of the maple
Are clenched like a hand,
Like girls at their first communion
The pear trees stand.

Oh I must pass nothing by
Without loving it much,
The raindrop try with my lips,
The grass with my touch;

For how can I be sure
I shall see again
The world on the first of May
Shining after the rain?

La hierba con mi tacto;

Porque, ¿cómo puedo estar segura
De que volveré a ver
El mundo un primero de mayo
Brillando después de la lluvia?
