Today is... Hoy es...

Today we´re going to learn one of the most important words in any language.
Hoy vamos a aprender una de las palabras más importantes de cualquier idioma.

And let´s hope we learn it well.

Hoy es el Día Internacional de la Paz.

Words stand for something. We should too. This is a good word to stand for.
Las palabras significan algo. Nosotros también podemos significarnos. Esta es una buena palabra por la que significarse.

My Friend´s Detroit. El Detroit de mi amigo.

My friend, the artist Terry Roby, gave me these pictures he took of his city, Detroit. Look at them closely. I want you to find a name for each of them.

Mi amigo, el artista Terry Roby, me dió estas fotos que tomó de su ciudad, Detroit. Míralas detenidamente. Quiero que encontréis un nombre para cada una de ellas.






What the boys in the last picture are looking at is a little pitbull. Now, you can do both these exercises and there will be some points for you.

I was kidding! I have a whole bunch of questions for you to answer. I´m back with Quiz 2 and Quiz 3. And my crock of points! Ah! Crock is another word for pot.

QUIZ 2 What do you think? Are these statements true (T) or false (F) ? See how many you get
right!

____1. The flush toilet or water closet (W.C.) was invented in 16th century England by Sir
Thomas Crapper. It was a gift for his godmother, Queen Elizabeth I.
____2. Everybody except Queen Elizabeth laughed at the water closet. Only she and her
godson used it. Two hundred years passed before it was in use again.
____3. Cleopatra bathed in milk and she used fine white sand to clean her body by abrasion.
____4. Soap has been in use since pre-historic times. At first it was used as a medicine and to
dress hair.
____5. In 2,500, soap was in use near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (today Calcutta).
____6. When the archaeologists dug up Pompeii, they found a soap-making factory buried in
the lava.
____7. Legend says soap got its name from Mount Sapo, in Rome, where animals were
sacrificed. The fat of the animals that were burnt there fell to the river Tiber. People
washing clothes in this river noticed the fat made their clothes cleaner.

____9. Legend says the Catholic queen Isabel I only took one bath in all her life.
____10. But her daughter, Crazy Joan, bathed frequently, especially during her last years,
for reasons of health.
____11. The toothbrush was invented in China on June 26, 1498.
____12. William Addis was the first to mass-produce toothbrushes in England in 1780. His
descendants still manufacture toothbrushes today.
____13. Turkish baths are humid. There is a lot of vapor. Scandinavian baths are dry. The heat
comes from stones.
____14. Finnish saunas are so hot that Finns can´t go to hell. The devil won´t let them in
because they always complain that it is too hot there.
