Nauta's Mini Mythology: Kassandra and the Trojan Horse / Mini mitología de Nauta: Casandra y el caballo de Troya

Alpin

It´s been  a long time since you last told me one of your stories.

Nauta

I thought you wouldn’t be interested now that you are grown.

Pensé que no te interesaría ahora que te has hecho mayor.

Alpin

I´m not a grown up. I only look it. I´m a kid under a horrible spell. Tell me one now.

No soy mayor. Sólo lo parezco. Soy un niño bajo un horrible hechizo. Cuéntame una ahora.

Nauta

I´m afraid the only one I can think of right now is very sad. But lately I can’t get it out of my head.

Once upon a time there was a city named Troy. It was so rich and powerful that the Greeks felt threatened by it and decided to destroy it.

One of the Greeks was married to a lady  who was said to be the most beautiful woman in the world. She abandoned her home and eloped with a Trojan prince named Paris. Now the Greeks had an excuse to declare war on Troy.

The Trojans had a princess who was loved by the god Apollo. He was the god of the sun, of light and reason. Since he spent all day up in the sky watching what was happening below, it comes as no surpise that he could predict what was going to happen next. That is why he was also the god of prophecy.

Apollo / Apolo

Casandra, I like you so much. Soon the Greeks will come over here and destroy Troy. It won’t be pretty. I don’t want you to go through all the awful stuff that will happen here.

Casandra, me gustas mucho.

Kassandra / Casandra

Horrible things are going to happen to my family and my friends? I have to warn them!

¿Cosas horribles le van a suceder a mi familia y a mis amigos? ¡Tengo que prevenirles!

Apollo / Apolo

Don’t even bother. They won’t listen to you. They will say you are crazy. People only believe what they want to believe. To them, you are only a cute girlie who thinks too much. Come with me, I understand you.

Kassandra /Casandra

But what will happen to my family?

Apollo / Apolo

The Greeks will kill your father and your brothers. They will make your mum and your sisters and sisters in law slaves. They will burn the city down. I´m not the king of the gods. Nor am I one of the Fates. There is nothing I can do to prevent this. I can only offer you my protection.

Matarán a tu padre y a tus hermanos y harán esclavas a tu madre, hermanas y cuñadas. Quemarán toda la ciudad. Yo no soy ni el rey de los dioses ni una de las Parcas. No puedo evitar esto. Sólo puedo ofrecerte mi protección.

Kassandra / Casandra

I can’t allow these things to happen. I have to help my family any way I can. You help us too.

It was just like Apollo said. Nobody wanted to listen to Kassandra. The poor girl suffered a lot because she knew what was going to happen but couldn’t save anybody. Kassandra saw her brothers and friends fall on the battlefield. They died because they were incredulous. To console Kassandra, Apollo made the Greeks ill. Many died from the disease he visited on them. Apollo also managed to get the best of the Greek warriors killed. But the god knew all this would be to no avail.

Despite all the horrors Apollo prophecied, Kassandra refused to leave her people to their fates. When the Greeks were about to lose the war, the foxiest of them had an idea. He had a huge wooden horse built. A few Greek soldiers hid inside the horse. Then the Greeks left it on the beach and pretended to sail away in their ships. The imprudent king of Troy, who was Kassandra’s father, mistook the horse for a gift the Greeks had left there to congratulate him for winning the war.

I know how to admire the valor of my foes. Why can’t they admire ours? Open the city gates. Let the horse in! It´s our trophy.

Kassandra / Casandra

You are a gentleman. The Greeks are scoundrels. They play dirty. Within that horse there are Greek soldiers who will open the gates tonight and let our enemies in while we sleep. No, while you sleep. I will be awake and biting my nails.

Tú eres un caballero. Los Griegos son unos tramposos. Juegan sucio.

A man named Laocoön and his sons knew poor Kassandra was right. They tried to convince the Trojans that the horse was a trap. But a huge serpent appeared and swallowed these poor fellows up.

The Trojans merrily let the horse loaded with hidden enemies into their city and began to celebrate their supposed victory drinking like fish. That night, while they were sleeping it off, their hidden enemies opened the city gates and let the Greek army in.Troy was burnt to a cinder.

Apollo / Apolo

Kassandra, come with me this minute. This is your last chance. If you stay, you will be a slave. They will abuse you brutally. Then a dirty old man will take you with him to Greece and there his wife will have you both hacked to death with an axe while you are having a bath. It will be worse than the shower scene in the
film "Psycho." Come while the going is good.

Vente conmigo mientras puedas.

But Kassandra refused to abandon her mother and the other Trojan women. A few Trojans did manage to escape. Their leader was called Aeneas.

Aeneas / Eneas

Don’t worry, Kassandra. All is well. In time, we will be the winners. I am going to Italy with my friends. A prophecy says that there we will found a city that will be much more powerful than Troy. We will call it Rome and it will conquer the world. We will conquer Greece and the descendants of the Greeks who will enslave and kill you will become our slaves. You will be avenged.

Tranquila, Casandra.

Kassandra / Casandra

What is that to me? I don’t want vengeance! I don’t want slaves, not even if they are Greek! I want to stop awful things from happening!

¿Y eso de que me sirve? ¡No quiero venganza!

Aeneas / Eneas

Oh, sure. Me too. Look, I’ve got to go. I’d take you with me but I’m already carrying my aged father. He´s my dad, you know, so I have to save this guy  even if he is slowing us down a lot. My mum would never forgive me if I left him here.

Kassandra / Casandra

You only listened to the prophecies that favored you. You are a son of -

Aeneas / Eneas

A son of the goddess Venus. Yes, that should explain some things. Don’t be childish. That´s why we say you are crazy.

Alpin

And what happened to Kassandra? Did they enslave and murder her?

¿Y qué le pasó a Casandra? ¿La esclavizaron y asesinaron?

Nauta

Yes. But first she had two kids with her adulterous old master and they were murdered too. But when she died and was about to go to classic hell with her deaf relatives and her foxy enemies, Apollo came for her again. And this time she went up to the sky with him.

Apollo / Apolo

You see how nice it is up here? You’ll relax and get a tan and look divine in no time. Up here we are above what goes on down there.

Kassandra / Casandra

Ok. I won´t say it, but I still think it. ****!

Vale. No lo digo, pero lo pienso. ¡******!

Julio Iglesias

Life goes on as usual.

La vida sigue igual.
