Sagittarius / Sagitario

Hi. I am Chiron the Archer, first of the Centaurs, physican, sportsman, musician and possibly the most famous teacher in Greek mythology. I count among my many talented pupils the heroes Hercules, Achilles, Jason and Peleus and the god of medicine, Aesclepius.

Hola.

Why am I up in the firmanent? Unlike the other centaurs, I was born immortal. But one day Herakles wounded me accidentally with an arrow he had dipped in the venom of the Hydra. Since I was immortal, I could not die. But my wound was so painful life became unbearable for me.

For a time I was thought there was no one in the world who suffered more than I did, but there was. This was Prometheus, whose liver was perpetually being gnawed by an eagle. When I realized how Prometheus suffered, I sympathized with him. In fact, I felt so sorry for him that I called on my half-brother Zeus and spoke in his behalf. I offered to give up my gift of immortality if Zeus would release Prometheus.

Ofrecí renunciar a mi inmortalidad si Zeus soltaba a Prometeo.

Zeus was touched by my noble gesture. I died, Prometheus was released, and then Zeus put me up among the stars so that people would remember how I had sacrificed myself to save another. I pass the time up here shooting at shooting stars.

Sixteen of my stars have planets, more than any other constellation. And my brightest stars form an asterism called "The Teapot."

Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Prometheus and Pandora / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Prometeo y Pandora

Who created humans according to Greek mythology? Today I want to tell you about Prometheus. He was the son of one of the Titans and Zeus ordered him to create the first men out of clay.

Prometheus felt sorry for the creatures he had created because their lives were not easy at all. Among other tough things, they were often cold and they didn´t know how to cook their food. This was because the first men didn´t know how to handle fire. They were so scared of it all they did when they saw it was run in another direction. Zeus was very pleased with that because whenever he did something like hit a tree with a bolt of lightning men got so scared that they could be easily controlled.

Prometheus wanted to better the lot of men and he decided to help them progress. He started by teaching them the secrets of handling fire. Zeus was furious. He was so angry that he punished both Prometheus and his creatures.

Zeus asked Hephaistos to create the first woman and then introduced her to Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus, who fell in love with her because Hephaistos had made her very attractive. They got married and Zeus gave her as a wedding gift a sealed box. When Pandora opened the box, a host of evil spirits flew out. Their mission was to forever torment mankind.

Pandora shut the box as soon as she could but it was too late. They were all out. However, someone remained trapped inside. This was Elpis, or Hope. She promised she would do what she could to help console mankind and Pandora thought she might as well let Elpis out and so she did.

As for Prometheus, Zeus chained him to a rock and had an eagle perpetually gnaw at his liver. Whatever the bird ate grew back, so the bird could keep on feeding. This was very cruel, but it didn´t last forever because there was someone kind enough to free Prometheus. This was Chiron the Centaur, who will tell you about himself when we learn about the sign of the zodiac Sagittarius.

Christmas 1A and 1B

Christmas Traditions

On Christmas Eve - the night before Christmas Day - some people go from one house to another singing Christmas carols. People often give them money, usually for a charity, or invite them to cake or cookies or a warm drink.

People may watch or participate in a Nativity Play.

Or they may enjoy mummerings.

Some people have a big dinner. The most typical dishes are goose or turkey, ham and pudding.

Another thing people do is pull open crackers. A cracker looks a bit like a polvoron, but you don´t eat it. It has a small gift and a joke or riddle inside and it makes a noise when it bursts open. Two people pull it apart. The one who has the longest end gets the gift.

Christians go to church, to Midnight Mass or Services.

The Christmas tree became popular in England in the 19th century because of Prince Albert, who was German but married Queen Victoria.

Holly and mistletoe are also used as Christmas decorations.

If you stand under mistletoe, anyone can kiss you.

Later children put milk and cookies near the Christmas tree for St. Nicholas, who is also Father Christmas. If they have a garden, they put water there for his reindeer. St. Nick has six reindeer. Their names are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen.

Also famous is Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer who first appeared in a story colouring book and a song. Rudolph leads the other reindeer when they pull Santa´s sleigh on foggy nights.

Rudolph has a daughter called Twinkletoes, who first appeared in another song.

The elves help Santa make toys in the North Pole but they don´t travel with him in his sleigh on Christmas Eve.

It´s the shortest day again... / Es el día más corto otra vez...

Last year we told you about St. Lucy, whose feastday is the shortest day and has the longest night of the year. A few days ago one of the teachers of our department had his first grandchild. Her name is Lucia. We wish her a very happy first nameday. Of course, she´s too little to eat Lussekatter but she may enjoy making these buns when she is older. They are Scandinavian but can be made with saffron from La Mancha.

Lussekatter

Ingredients:

1/4 teaspoon La Mancha saffron threads
1 cup milk1 tablespoon yeast
1/2 cup sugar
4 ounces butter
5 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 large beaten eggs
1 beaten egg white
Break down saffron threads by pounding with a mortar and a pestle.
Heat milk until lukewarm in a small saucepan.
Mix yeast with 1/4 cup milk and 1 tablespoon sugar. Set aside.
Melt butter on low heat in the saucepan with milk. Add the crushed saffron and let cool.
In a large bowl, mix flour, salt and remaining sugar.
Stir yeast into cooled milk mixture and then mix this with the dry ingredients, beating to mix well. Add the two beaten eggs.
Knead in bowl for 5-7 minutes.
Turn onto floured board and knead another 7-8 minutes.
Put dough in a lightly greased bowl, turn to coat all sides, and put in a warm, draft-free place to it can rise, which should take about an hour.
When the dough has risen, knead lightly to push out air and divide into small pieces about 10-12 inches in size. With your hands, roll each small piece into a strip about ten to eight inches long and shape into an "S" or an "8".
Place the "S" or "8" figures on lightly greased cookie sheet. Cover with a clean cloth and let them rise until they are twice as big as they were. It should take about one and a half hours.
Preheat oven to 375ºF. When the figures have risen, brush lightly with the beaten egg white. Bake in the 375º F preheated oven until brown. This usally takes about fifteen minutes. When done, cool on a rack.

Lussekatter
Ingredientes:
1/4 cucharadita de té hebras de azafrán manchego.
1 taza de leche
1 cucharada de levadura
1/2 taza de azucar
4 onzas de mantequilla (suele ser una barrita)
5 tazas de harina
1 cucharadita de té de sal
2 huevos batidos
Suele tardar 15 minutos. Enfriar en parrilla

Arley Reported Missing / Arley dado por desaparecido

Titania

Aaaaaaaaaaaarleeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!

¡Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaleeeeeeeeeeeey!

Aislene

Now you know how I feel! Maybe now you´ll do something!

¡Ahora sabes como me siento! ¡A lo mejor ahora haces algo!

Oberon

Titania, you´re not Mediterranean. You´re English and you´re a queen. You can´t break down and start screaming. You´ve got to keep a stiff upper lip.

Titania, no eres mediterranea. Eres inglesa y reina. No puedes venirte abajo y desahogarte gritando. Tienes que mantener el labio superior tieso.

Titania

You´re right! Do I look better now? Let´s comb both worlds. Not a stone left unturned!

¡Tienes razón! ¿Estoy mejor ahora? ¡Ordeno que peinen los dos mundos! ¡Buscad hasta debajo de las piedras!

Puck

You already gave that order when Alpin disappeared. After combing Minced Forest and dredging Dismal Swamp and questioning all the ogres and bogeymen, licensed and freelance, and giving the goblins the third degree, we finally learned that they may have last been seen at Apple Island, where somebody ate all the honey and doughnuts to be found there. Now, that was either Alpin or the Third Horseman of the Apocalypse. It´s not easy for someone like Alpin to go unnoticed. But why isn´t he leaving a vanishing food trail now?

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Because he´s going hungry.

Porque está pasando hambre.

Nicholas the Wonderworker / Nicolás el Obrador de Prodigios

December 6 is the feastday of St. Nicholas. Born in the third century A.D., he was bishop of Myra, which is in modern day Turkey. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving. He gave away anonymously the great fortune his parents left him. For instance, he would leave gold coins in people´s shoes while they were sleeping. When he died, people continued giving gifts anonymously in his name. That is why legend turned him into Santa Claus. He is the patron of children and merchants and of New York City. He is sometimes called St. Nicholas of Bari because his remains were transported to the cathedral of Bari. Last night he was busy giving out gifts in Germany.

Arley and Alpin

Heeeeeeelllllpppp!!!!

¡¡¡Socooooooroooo!!!

Think Free, Do Good, Dream Bright!

Arley

Look at the writing on the wall, Alpin! Dream bright! That´s what I´ve always wanted to do! Dream bright dreams! I just know I´ll find the way to end my nightmares here! We´re in the right place!

Alpin

We´re in a cage, you wally! You´re living a nightmare and I´m dying of hunger! And I´m going to miss the Halloween Party if I haven´t already missed it!There´s no telling what time it is in this timeless place! And I´m so extenuated I don´t even have the strength to protest shouting!

Arley

You can´t be hungry. You just had all the honey in Honey Meadow and all the donuts from the Cider Mills for breakfast.

No puedes estar hambriento.

Alpin

So what? I got hyper on a bit of sugar and that was fifteen minutes ago. It´s all your fault, you chubby book! You´re the one that brought us here. After first frightening me to death in a nightmare.

Bulfinch´s Mythology

What I wanted you to do was tell your cousin Michael about your dream. I´m his book. You should have recognized me.

Alpin

You think someone like me would bother to look a book in the face? And a fat one yet!

Mildew

Curmudgeon! How could you? Let these children go immediately. You don´t have a license to kidnap children. You´re not an ogre! Give me the keys to the cages before I regret having recommended you to Mr. Hobbs for this job.

¡Cascarrabias! ¿Cómo has podido?

Basiliska

My fiancé will give you nothing! The book and the kids are staying in their cages until the Great Auction of the Verbal Tenses is over and turns out satisfactorily for me.

¡Mi prometido no te dará nada!

Mildew

The what?

¿La qué?

Basiliska

I´m organizing an auction to raise funds for this library. To refurbish the guard´s cottage we live in. Pools, tennis courts, a stable for thoroughbred racehorses, etc. And I need money to pay myself a pension for my old age, one that will satisfy my needs, which from now on will be many. So, I´m going to auction the verbal tenses.

Mildew

You are going to what?

¿Qué vas a qué?

Basiliska

This is how it works. Whoever buys a tense becomes the rightful owner of everything that is said, or sang or written in it. If you buy a book that is all in the present simple, you are the copyright holder of that book, no matter who held the right before the auction. We´ll start from zero. Of course if a book is written in different tenses, the owner of the said tenses will have to wheel and deal and pact.

Mildew

But how can you auction the tenses? You don´t own them. Nobody does.

Basiliska

Exactly. They are a res nullius. Or were, until I claimed them. The law is clear on that. If you find something that doesn´t belong to anyone, it´s yours. First come first served. So the verbal tenses are mine and I´m going to auction off a few because I need cash, but whatever I choose to sell, I will keep the past simple for myself because I heard somewhere it is used the most when telling stories. So don´t any of you open your mouths or you´ll be paying me for what you say.

Exactamente.

Mildew

This is unheard of! And outrageous! Curmudgeon, stop your fiancée! Speak to her!

¡Esto es inaudito! ¡Y un ultraje! Cascarrabias, detén a tu prometida! ¡Habla con ella!

Curmudgeon

So long as not one book leaves this library I don´t care a fig what anyone does, including Basiliska. It´s none of my business because I´m not paid to worry about that.

Mildew

I can´t allow this! I won´t allow this!

¡No lo puedo permitir! ¡No lo voy a permitir!

Basiliska

You´re envious, Mildew. You´ll have to put your sister in a cage too, Curmudgeon. If she carries out her threats, your books will surely run free.
