The Vicious Villains Society's Annual Assembly / La asamblea anual de la Asociación de Villanos Empedernidos

At the end of December, the Vicious Villains Society holds a meeting in the terribly uninviting dungeon of its clubhouse, which is illuminated only by chochinobakes, to make a balance of all the harm they have done that year.

Although this has been a fruitful year for evil, not all is sweet success in the society because its members are divided and the chasm between the two existing factions is wider every day.

On one side are the traditional bad guys. They know that goodness exists and their only purpose in life is to put an end to it. These members of the society call themselves “the consecrated,” because they consider their devotion to evil a sort of priesthood. They not only behave badly. They dress badly, doing their very worst to look dreadful, and they even smell bad too. But at odds with the traditional bad guys is the other faction, whose followers do not believe in the existence of good. They believe that only evil exists and that it is something so natural that there is no reason to hide it. Therefore, they do not dress the role. They prefer to wear the latest, coolest fashions. The traditional bad guys call their opposition “the confounded shameless ones,” whereas these call those “the dorks with a goon complex.” It goes without saying that they hate each others’ guts.

Because it is rather lax and far less demanding, the number of those who defend the second tendency increases daily. And to avoid becoming a minority when it is time to vote and make decisions, the traditional bad guys have had to visit unemployment offices to hire petty delinquents whom they have infiltrated in their society with a view to gaining votes.

The Lord of the Goon-Dorks / El Señor de los Tontos Acomplejados

Ok! The emergency plan guys. Where are you?

¡A ver! ¡Los del plan de emergencia! ¿Dónde están?

Knick-knack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

They´re already in the assembly hall. Only I am still to enter. Nimbus di Lembo at your service. As well as at evil’s, sir.

The Lord of the Goon-Dorks / El Señor de los Tontos Acomplejados

Then what are you waiting for? Put on your hood and enter the assembly dungeon, the meeting is about to begin. Oh, what we have come to! Here you have us hiring useless bunglers like this one! Because in these times you have to be a real idiot to be a thief and be unemployed. You guys are lazy and hate to work, that’s all there is to it.

¿Pues a qué esperas?

Knick-knack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Don’t say that. I have a curriculum. I mean, I have a record. Last summer I was hired to steal books by the Wizard Freston himself.

The Lord of the Goon-Dorks / El Señor de los Tontos Acomplejados

And I’m sure he fired you the minute he hired you or you wouldn't be here. C´mon, go into the assembly dungeon.

The Lord of the Shameless Ones / El Señor de los Sinvergüenzas

What are sharp guys like us doing in a joint like this? You don’t find seats as hard or as dirty as these even in the cheapest sections of the worst theatres. And need I mention the ******* Japanese ghost lanterns? Who put those in here? My interior designer would die of a heart attack if he saw them.

Members who wish to assist to an assembly must do so masked, to avoid having problems with other members. If they weren’t unrecognizable, more than one might take the opportunity to even a score with another. So that acts of violence will not interrupt the normal functioning of the assemblies, the clothing to be worn by those who assist is designed and regulated to make everyone look as equal and uniform and unrecognizable as possible.

But in this, as in everything else, the differences that exist between both gangs have become visible. Those who consider themselves consecrated wear black from the top of their heads to the tips of their toes. But the shameless ones sustain that wearing black is the same as being ashamed of being delinquents, and although they cover up to avoid incidents, they wear yellow.

The Lord of the Shameless Ones / El Señor de los Sinvergüenzas

Let us analyze the grade of achievement of our goals:

Blah, blah, … We are effectively turning this planet into a desert. Despite the existence of protected areas, in short time we will have sent most of those bumpkins who insist on caterwauling pastorally in the green to the place where they belong in this millennium, which is the local city dump. We shall not rest until we see them hopping and skipping through tons of garbage. We congratulate all those who have again this year contributed to making allergy to pollen pandemic. We hope this leads to the total disappearance of vegetation in any place held to be habitable.

As for education, once again we find ourselves acclaiming the Wizard Freston for his zeal in making books disappear. We hope his plan to charge for lending library books prospers. We are also aware that he has quite a flair for making intellectuals look like whackos. But now he doesn’t only make them look like ridiculous and ineffectual lunatics. He has achieved far more, and thanks to him, in the mind of most ignorant citizens, the image of a man quietly reading a book by himself is immediately associated with that of a mass murderer. You only have to listen to how the news always insists on the great intelligence of the heartless perpetrators of blah, blah, blah…

And last but not least, I have to take off my hat to and ask for a huge ovation for…the crook who swiped the blank check from the Magi! Whoever you are, you have given us a lesson in evildoing.

Knick-knack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

What a drag. I'm leaving early because they are waiting for me at home and I am no use to anyone here anymore. I really hope they honestly pay me for having been here and listened to all this and don’t swindle me. I suppose I should return the costume. I’ll leave it hanging here in the closet. I don’t want these guys to accuse me of stealing it. Hey! There’re two moles in that corner!

Rupert / Ruperto

These blokes have no idea who took the leprechaun with the blank check hidden in it.

Swithin / Suitino

Nor do we. Let´s leave. We´re wasting our time here. Come, before someone sees us.

Pero nosotros tampoco. Vámonos, que estamos perdiendo el tiempo aquí. Venga, antes de que nos vea alguien.

Post Childermas / Tras el Día de los Inocentes

The Page Adar-Malik / El Paje Adar-Malik

Your Majesties, a bill collector in a tailcoat is beating at the door.

I'm not the bill collector in the tail coat. I'm Death's coachman. I'm wearing a tailcoat because I have to go to the office party after work. I've come for your majesties. Your time is up.

Melchior / Melchor

Ah. It must be one of those practical jokes some people play at Childermas.

Ah. Debe tratarse de una inocentada.

Balthazar / Baltasar

Isn’t it a bit late for this? The Day of the Holy Innocents was yesterday.

Ernest / Ernesto

This is no practical joke. It's something quite serious. I’ve come to escort you to the next world. Your sojourn among mortals is over. Considering how things are going for you among the humans this year and also taking into account the blank check that disappeared, Death has decided that you no longer have anything to do on this side of the universe. Death says you are definitely outdated. Nowadays giving things away is not what it used to be, most especially giving out checks that are blank. Now, don’t make a big thing out of this. When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. And it’s nothing personal. I’m only doing my job.

Darcy, the dark man / Darcy, el hombre oscuro

Dad, I´m going to ask you not to take them away.

Ernest / Ernesto

Hesitate and reflect. Think that it´s not me you are asking this from. You’re asking Death.

Darcy

Then I will ask you for a little time. I’m looking for that check, and I mean to find it. I’ve asked everywhere, but no one has told me where it is because no one knows. Still, I won’t leave a stone unturned. Look, nobody will notice these gentlemen are still on this side before 12th Night. Give me till then. It´s all I ask for.

Ernest /Ernesto

Well, since I can’t refuse…

Bueno, como no me puedo negar...

Caspar /Gaspar

Kid, if you find that check the first thing we will give you is a larger hat. That one is too small for you and it must be very uncomfortable to have to balance it on your head.

Darcy

This is what's in among the coachmen of the Sidhe. If you're a good driver, it doesn't fall off, no matter the speed. But thank you anyway.

Nauta

With the speed of a comet the year 2012 is leaving us and also like a comet in will rush 2013. And precisely about rushing comets is today's tale.

Metioche and Menippe were two very beautiful,  very generous and very hard-working young ladies. But they were a bit rash.

Ever since the goddess Athena in person taught these girls how to weave, they spent the whole day making clothes for others. A cloak for so and so, a shawl for someone else, something for the new baby. Perhaps they were so considerate and helpful because they didn't want to be one bit like their father, the extremely selfish giant Orion, who, among other reckless acts, had tried to exterminate every animal on earth to earn for himself the title of greatest hunter ever but ended up being annihilated by a tremendous scorpion.

I! I'm Orion. I have my own constellation. Look at me. I'm a gorgeous hunk.

¡Yo! Yo soy Orión. Tengo mi propia constelación. Mírame. Soy un tiarrón guapísimo.

Metioche and Menippe / Metíoque y Menipe

Please go away, Daddy. Show some consideration. This post is about us.

Vete, por favor, Papá. Ten un poco de consideración. Esta entrada es sobre nosotras.

One day a plague began to wreak havoc in Boeotia, which was were the sisters lived, and a seer chanced to say that it would only be over when two young people presented themselves before the gods of the underworld, Hades and Persephone, and begged them to quit increasing the popultaion of their realm in that terrible manner.

The girls' selflessness was such that when they heard what the seer had said they decided to go themselves to these terrible region from which no mortal they had heard of had ever returned and to which absolutely no other young Boeotian was willing to move.

Since they knew of no other way to get to the underwold, they committed suicide by stabbing their heads with their shuttles. Yes, and without blinking.

Hades and Persephone were aghast when they saw the girls arrive.

Hades asked them if they were out of their minds, although this was quite evident after their bout with the shuttles. He said it was true that it was very easy to enter the underworld. All you had to do was die. The difficult part was to find the way out. But although they were very, very scarce, there were precedents of people entering and exiting alive. The girls should have been a little less rash and paused to inquire how this was done.

They responded that they had no time to lose, because every second that passed, someone in their homeland passed away with it.

On the one hand, since their death had been thoroughly untimely, they had no reason to remain in the underworld and Hades had to remove them from there. But, on the other hand, they were dead, so he couldn't just send them home.

Persephone solved the dilemma by turning them into two comets and sending them rushing out of the underworld. And they are still rushing about the heavens at great speed.

And rushing, too, do I leave with the old year, but not before hoping to see you soon in the new to wish you a very happy 2013.

The Case of the Missing Leprechaun / El caso del léprecan desaparecido

  Thistle / Cardo

I don’t understand you, Darcy. If nobody can say no to you, why don’t you just ask Alpin to stop eating everything up?

No te entiendo, Darcy.

Darcy

Because I have no idea what would happen if I did. Alpin might need to eat so voraciously to survive. I can’t just ask people to do the first thing that pops into my head, Thistle. I, like everyone else, have to be responsible.

Thistle / Cardo

But you do everything my mother asks you to.

Darcy

Your mum and I have an agreement. I promised to give her all my support if she allowed Alpin to live among us. If I hadn’t done that, my mum would have moved away with Alpin and deserted the rest of the family. Or we would all have had to go live among the outlaws and evildoers. My father would have had to resign from his job and…

Thistle / Cardo

But you could have just asked my mum to let Alpin stay. She couldn’t have refused.

Darcy

Your mum is queen and if I went about telling her what to do, it would be as if I had usurped the throne. I don’t want to be king and go about giving orders or anything of the kind. All I want is to live in peace. All that glitters isn’t gold, Thissy. My gift may make my life look like a bed of roses, but don’t forget that roses have a few thorns.

Thistle / Cardo

Heather and I baked a cartload of cookies for the Halloween party and your brother ate them all up. Now we’re baking a second cartload for Christmas. Can you at least ask him to eat only half the cartload?

Darcy

That I can and will do.

Eso puedo hacerlo y lo haré.

Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum! Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum!

¡Mamaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! ¡Mamaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Titania

Who is shouting? This had better be something serious. I need to get my beauty sleep.

¿Quién está gritando? Más vale que esto sea algo serio. Necesito mi sueño reparador.

Thistle / Cardo

It’s Arley, Mum. He and Alpin are coming up from behind the Winter Moth and Angel Wings trees.

Titania

Arley! Are you having nightmares again? I thought that was over.

¡Arley! ¿Has vuelto a tener pesadillas? Creía que eso se había acabado.

Arley

This is a real flesh and blood nightmare, Mum. I went back to the car where I used to sleep because I needed to retrieve the blank check I had hidden there. You know, the one the Magi gave me. I hid it inside a little leprechaun ornament that was hanging there. I thought that since it had been hanging there for over twenty years and since the car hasn’t left the garage for almost as long either it was as safe a place as any. But the leprechaun is gone.

Alpin

Did you just say the check was inside that toy leprechaun? Because if you did, I’ve had that check in my hands without suspecting a thing. Sorry, Arley, I’ve got to go.

Darcy

Hold it right there. Are you saying you know where the ornament is?

Quieto parado.

Alpin

Why do you ask? You're a pig, Darcy, depriving your poor little brother of a blank check! Yes, I do know where the leprechaun is. I gave it to Fiona out of the goodness of my heart because I was tired of it and she needed something to decorate the cake she baked for cousin Michael’s birthday last July with. That was just before Arley and I left for the Olympics. And now let me go. I’ve the imperious need to reach Michael before you guys do.

Arley

If it was on Michael’s cake, he must still have it. I’m sure he’ll return it to me if I ask him for it. Whew! It looks like I’ll be able to return the check to the Magi on Twelfth Night after all.

Titania

If everything is under control, can I go back to sleep now?

Darcy

Do just that. I’ll take care of this.

Hazlo. Yo me ocuparé de esto.

But…if our memory doesn’t fail us…

Pero…si la memoria no nos falla…

Quantity Crib / Chuleta de cantidades

Don Quijote

Look at my crib on quantity. Let's put an end to being confused with these little words.

Ejes. an apple – una manzana, an eye – un ojo.

Many es muchos /muchas. Va con plurales regulares e irregulares: many bags – muchas bolsas, many teeth – muchos dientes. Ejes. many grains of rice – muchos granos de arroz, many boxes of cookies – muchas cajas de galletas.

Much es mucho /mucha. Ejes. much bread – mucho pan, much water – mucha agua.

O sea: very apples no significa muchas manzanas. ¡No, no, no y no! Sí puedes usar very delante de many y much, few y little para modificar la cantidad, pero jamás  pongas very  directamente delante de un sustantivo, da igual que sea singular o plural. Sí: very many apples - muchísimas manzanas, very much money - muchísimo dinero, very little noise - muy poco ruido, very few people - muy poca gente. No: very apples, very money, very noise, very people. ¡Qué no!

Few es pocos /pocas. Va con plurales regulares (eje. a few flowers – pocas flores) e irregulares (eje. few children – pocos niños). No va con incontables.

A few es unos cuantos / unas cuantas. Siempre va con plurales, sean regulares o irregulares. Ejes: a few oranges – unas cuantas naranjas, a few children – unos cuantos niños. No va con incontables.

Little es poco. Se puede usar delante de incontables. Ejes. There is little sugar. / Hay poco azúcar. We spent little money yesterday. / Gastamos poco dinero ayer.

Ejes. enough sandwiches – suficientes sándwiches, enough people – suficiente gente, enough rice – suficiente arroz.

More es más. Va con plurales regulares (eje. more toys - más juguetes) e irregulares (eje. more mice – más ratones) y con incontables (eje. more food – más comida).

Less es menos. Va con plurales regulares (eje. less cars – menos coches) plurales irregulares (eje. less children - menos niños) y con incontables (eje. less cheese – menos queso)

Some es algunos / algunas. Es para contables con plurales regulares e irregulares (eje. some pencils –algunos lápices, some feet- algunos pies) Some también es algo de para incontables (eje. some milk – algo de leche). Se usa en oraciones afirmativas (eje. There is some food in the fridge. / Hay algo de comida en el frigorífico.).

Any es lo que se usa en vez de some en las oraciones negativas. Por ejemplo: There isn’t any food in the fridge. Por ejemplo: Is there any food in the fridge? / ¿Hay algo de comida en el frigorífico?

No se puede usar en oraciones negativas. Por ejemplo: There is no food in the fridge. No se puede decir: There isn’t no food in the fridge. Sí se puede decir: No, there isn’t food in the fridge.

Eje. Most people marry. / La mayoría de la gente se casa.

Too es demasiado/demasiada. Too tiene que ir con many o much. Por ejemplo: too many sweets - demasiados dulces, too much popcorn - demasiadas palomitas.

Wassail Song / Canción a tu salud

There where the apples grow, there is an old tradition that consists of wishing a happy new year to owners of orchards with appletrees as well as to the trees themselves. On the eve of the Epiphany, children ask the owners of orchards to treat them to a little money, beer, cheese and bread in exchange of songs and blessings. They bring with them a bowl full of apple cider boiled with slices of oranges, cinnamon, cloves and other spices. In this beverage float pieces of toast. The children water the roots of the appletrees with this cider to thank the trees for having borne fruit and to encourage them to bear more during the new year. They hang the pieces of toast from the boughs of trees so that the birds who have not fled from the cold will have something to eat. And they wish everyone who allows them to do so a happy new year.
