Wassail Song / Canción a tu salud



There where the apples grow, there is an old tradition that consists of wishing a happy new year to owners of orchards with appletrees as well as to the trees themselves. On the eve of the Epiphany, children ask the owners of orchards to treat them to a little money, beer, cheese and bread in exchange of songs and blessings. They bring with them a bowl full of apple cider boiled with slices of oranges, cinnamon, cloves and other spices. In this beverage float pieces of toast. The children water the roots of the appletrees with this cider to thank the trees for having borne fruit and to encourage them to bear more during the new year. They hang the pieces of toast from the boughs of trees so that the birds who have not fled from the cold will have something to eat. And they wish everyone who allows them to do so a happy new year.
