It’s Arley, Mum. He and Alpin are coming up from behind the Winter Moth and Angel Wings trees.

Arley! Are you having nightmares again? I thought that was over.

This is a real flesh and blood nightmare, Mum. I went back to the car where I used to sleep because I needed to retrieve the blank check I had hidden there. You know, the one the Magi gave me. I hid it inside a little leprechaun ornament that was hanging there. I thought that since it had been hanging there for over twenty years and since the car hasn’t left the garage for almost as long either it was as safe a place as any. But the leprechaun is gone.

Esta es una pesadilla tan real como la carne y el hueso, Mamá. Regresé al coche donde solía dormir porque necesitaba recuperar el cheque en blanco que había escondido ahí. Ya sabes, el cheque que me dieron los Reyes Magos. Lo escondí dentro de un adorno con forma de léprecan que colgaba allí. Pensé que como llevaba veinte años colgando allí y como el coche no ha salido del garaje en casi otros tantos, estaría tan a salvo como en cualquier otro lugar. Pero el leprecán ha desaparecido.

Alpin

Did you just say the check was inside that toy leprechaun? Because if you did, I’ve had that check in my hands without suspecting a thing. Sorry, Arley, I’ve got to go.

¿Has dicho que el cheque estaba dentro del léprecan de juguete? Porque si lo has dicho, yo he tenido ese cheque en mis manos sin sospecharlo siquiera. Lo siento, Arley, tengo que irme.

Hold it right there. Are you saying you know where the ornament is?

Quieto parado. ¿Estás diciendo que tú sabes dónde está el adorno?

Why do you ask? You're a pig, Darcy, depriving your poor little brother of a blank check! Yes, I do know where the leprechaun is. I gave it to Fiona out of the goodness of my heart because I was tired of it and she needed something to decorate the cake she baked for cousin Michael’s birthday last July with. That was just before Arley and I left for the Olympics. And now let me go. I’ve the imperious need to reach Michael before you guys do.

¿Por qué preguntas? ¡Eres un guarro, Darcy! ¡Mira que privarle a tu pobre hermanito menor de un cheque en blanco! Pues sí, sé dónde está el léprecan. Se lo di a Fiona porque soy de buen corazón y estaba cansado de él y ella necesitaba algo para decorar la tarta de cumpleaños de Michael el pasado julio. Fue justo antes de que partiésemos Arley y yo para las olimpiadas. Y ahora deja que me vaya. Tengo la necesidad imperiosa de personarme ante Michael antes que vosotros.

If it was on Michael’s cake, he must still have it. I’m sure he’ll return it to me if I ask him for it. Whew! It looks like I’ll be able to return the check to the Magi on Twelfth Night after all.

Si estaba en la tarta de Michael, lo más probable es que él todavía lo tenga. Estoy seguro de que me lo devolverá si se lo pido. ¡Ufff! Parece que voy a poder devolver el cheque a sus majestades la noche de Reyes después de todo.
