With the speed of a comet the year 2012 is leaving us and also like a comet in will rush 2013. And precisely about rushing comets is today's tale.

Veloz como un cometa se está yendo el año 2012 y como otro cometa entrará el 2013. Y precisamente de cometas veloces va nuestra historia de hoy.

Metioche and Menippe were two very beautiful,  very generous and very hard-working young ladies. But they were a bit rash.  

Metíoque y Menipe eran dos muchachas muy guapas, muy generosas y muy trabajadoras. Pero eran algo precipitadas. 

Ever since the goddess Athena in person taught these girls how to weave, they spent the whole day making clothes for others. A cloak for so and so, a shawl for someone else, something for the new baby. Perhaps they were so considerate and helpful because they didn't want to be one bit like their father, the extremely selfish giant Orion, who, among other reckless acts, had tried to exterminate every animal on earth to earn for himself the title of greatest hunter ever but ended up being annihilated by a tremendous scorpion. 

Desde que la diosa Atenea en persona enseño a estas muchachas a tejer, se pasaban el día creando prendas para los demás. Que si un manto para éste, que si un chal para aquella, que si algo para el nuevo bebé. Tal vez eran tan consideradas y serviciales porque no querían parecerse nada a su padre, el insolidario gigante Orión que entre otras barbaridades intentó acabar con todos los animales de la tierra pensando que así conseguiría el título de mejor cazador de todos los tiempos y acabó siendo aniquilado por un escorpión descomunal.

One day a plague began to wreak havoc in Boeotia, which was were the sisters lived, and a seer chanced to say that it would only be over when two young people presented themselves before the gods of the underworld, Hades and Persephone, and begged them to quit increasing the popultaion of their realm in that terrible manner.    

Un día una peste empezó a hacer estragos en Boeocia, que era donde vivían las hermanas, y a un adivino se le ocurrió decir que aquello acabaría cuando dos jóvenes se personasen ante los dioses del inframundo, Hades y Perséfone, y les suplicasen que dejasen de aumentar la población de su reino de aquella manera.  

The girls' selflessness was such that when they heard what the seer had said they decided to go themselves to these terrible region from which no mortal they had heard of had ever returned and to which absolutely no other young Boeotian was willing to move.

La solidaridad de las muchachas era tal que cuando se enteraron de lo que había dicho el adivino, decidieron dirigirse ellas a ese terrible lugar del que no había vuelto nungún mortal del que ellas tuviesen noticia y al que ningún otro joven Boeocio estaba dispuesto a trasladarse.

Since they knew of no other way to get to the underwold, they committed suicide by stabbing their heads with their shuttles. Yes, and without blinking.

Como no conocían otra manera de llegar al inframundo, se suicidaron  clavandose en la cabeza las lanzaderas de sus telares. Pues sí, y sin pestañear.

Hades and Persephone were aghast when they saw the girls arrive.

Hades y Perséfone se quedaron pasmados al ver llegar a las muchachas. 

Hades asked them if they were out of their minds, although this was quite evident after their bout with the shuttles. He said it was true that it was very easy to enter the underworld. All you had to do was die. The difficult part was to find the way out. But although they were very, very scarce, there were precedents of people entering and exiting alive. The girls should have been a little less rash and paused to inquire how this was done.

Hades las  preguntó si estaban mal de la cabeza, aunque esto era evidente despues de su encuentro con las lanzaderas. Dijo que efectivamente era muy fácil entrar en el infierno. Bastaba con morir. Lo difícil era salir, pero, aunque muy escasos, había antecedentes de mortales que habían logrado entrar y salir con vida. Las muchachas tenían que haber sido un poco menos precipitadas y haberse detenido para averiguar como se hacía eso.

They responded that they had no time to lose, because every second that passed, someone in their homeland passed away with it.

Ellas respondieron que no tenían tiempo que perder, ya que con cada segundo que pasaba un habitante de su tierra también pasaba a no precisamente mejor vida. 

On the one hand, since their death had been thoroughly untimely, they had no reason to remain in the underworld and Hades had to remove them from there. But, on the other hand, they were dead, so he couldn't just send them home.

Por una parte, como no las tocaba quedarse allí porque no era todavía su hora, Hades tenía que sacarlas del lugar. Pero como por otra parte estaban  bien muertas, no podía devolverlas a casa.

Persephone solved the dilemma by turning them into two comets and sending them rushing out of the underworld. And they are still rushing about the heavens at great speed.

Perséfone resolvió el dilema convirtiéndolas en dos cometas y las mandó salir zumbando de allí. Todavía están recorriendo el cielo a gran velocidad.  

And rushing, too, do I leave with the old year, but not before hoping to see you soon in the new to wish you a very happy 2013.

Y zumbando también me voy yo con el año viejo. Pero no sin antes esperar veros pronto en el nuevo para desearos un muy feliz 2013.
