It is almost a month since the new year first saw the light. And our post today is about a goddess who helps those about to be born to come out into the light. Be it natural or artificial light.

Hace ya casi un mes que el nuevo año ha visto la luz. Y sobre una diosa que ayuda a las madres a dar a luz va la entrada de hoy, ya sea la luz natural o artificial.

The Greeks call her Eileithyia. We Romans call her Lucina. Lucina is much easier for me to say and perhaps for you to remember, so I will call her that from now on. Also, I think it´s prettuer. But I may be prejudiced because I am Roman.

Los griegos la llaman Ilitía. Los romanos la llamamos Lucina. Lucina es más fácil de decir para mí y tal vez más fácil de recordar para ti, así que la llamaré Lucina en adelante. Además, me parece un nombre más bonito. Pero puede que esto sea un prejuicio porque soy romano.

Well, yes. Lucina does just that. She is the celestial midwife. She helps both immortal and mortal children to be born. Lucina´s flower is the lotus flower and she lives in a lotus tree grove in Mount Esquiline, which is one of the seven hills of ancient Rome. 

Pues sí, Lucina hace justamente eso. Es la partera celestial. Ayuda a los bebés inmortales y mortales a nacer. La flor de Lucina es la flor de loto y ella vive en un bosquecito de árboles de loto en el  Monte Esquilino, que es una de las siete colinas de la antigua Roma.

Can you guess what her favorite animal is? That´s right. It´s the ladybug, also known as the ladybird.

¿Puedes adivinar cuál es su animal favorito? Correcto. Es la mariquita, también conocida como la vaquita de San Antonio.

Ladybugs are also popular among gardeners that grow roses, because they eat up other insects that attack these flowers. They also protect other plants and it is a good idea to have a few in your garden. They will also add joy and colour to it.  Ladybugs are a symbol of trust, because they walk calm and unafraid all over people's hands and arms instead of flying away from humans. The goddess Lucina punishes anyone who harms ladybugs during at least nine days.

Las mariquitas también son populares entre los jardineros que cultivan rosas porque se comen a otros insectos que atacan a estas flores. También protegen a otras plantas y es buena idea tener unas cuantas mariquitas en tu jardín, al que también aportan alegría y colorido. Las mariquitas son un símbolo de la confianza porque caminan confiadas por las manos y los brazos de la gente en lugar de huir volando de los humanos. La diosa Lucina castiga durante por lo menos nueve días a cualquiera que haga daño a una mariquita.
