This post is about a reckless driver. The young man in the illustration is not the sun god Phoëbus Apollo. His name is Phaëthon, and the reason why he looks so much like Apollo is that he is Apollo's son. Perhaps I should have said “was,” for Phaëthon is no longer among us, due to his imprudent driving. Phaëthon did not depart alone. He carried off a lot of people with him and made many of those who survived the terrible accident he caused very unhappy for the rest of their lives.

Esta entrada va sobre un conductor temerario. El joven de la ilustración no es el dios del sol, Febo Apolo. Su nombre es Faetón, y la razón por la que se parece tanto a Apolo es que es su hijo. Tal vez debí decir "se parecía" en vez de "se parece" porque Faetón ya no se encuentra entre nosotros debido a su imprudencia al conducir. Faetón no se fue sólo. Se llevó por delante a un montón de gente e hizó muy infelices durante el resto de sus vidas a muchos de los que sobrevivieron al terrible accidente que causó.



Phaëthon had lived since he was born with his mother in Ethiopia. But when he learned that his father was the sun god, he decided to move in with daddy.

Faetón había vivido desde que nació con su madre en Etiopía. Pero cuando se enteró de que su padre era el dios del sol, decidió mudarse a casa de papá.

Daddy´s house was an incredibly beautiful palace next to the ocean built at the spot beyond India where the sun rises every morning at dawn. It was the creation of the extremely ingenious god Vulcan, and therefore, although it was built of gold, silver, ivory and precious stones, the craftsmanship was worth more than the materials. Vulcan had also decorated the walls with splendid paintings that always showed something new when contemplated. And the blue and green haired sea nymphs often dropped by, adding even more charm to the place with their delicate presence.

La casa de papá era un palacio increíblemente hermoso construido junto al mar justo en el punto más allá de la India en el que el sol sale todas las mañanas al amanecer. Era una creación del ingeniosísimo dios Vulcano, y por eso, aunque estaba construido en oro, plata, marfil y piedras preciosas, el trabajo valía más que los materiales. También se había encargado Vulcano de decorar las paredes con esplendidas pinturas que siempre mostraban cosas nuevas al ser contempladas. Y se acercaban por ahí con mucha frecuencia las nereidas de cabellos verdes y azules, añadiendo con su delicada presencia aún más encanto al lugar.

When Phaëthon had seen it all and got bored of hanging out at this wonderful place flirting with the Nereids, he did not return to Ethiopia to do something useful there. He figured the time had come to prove that he was as good as his father was at driving the chariot of the sun across the sky from dawn to dusk.

Cuando Faetón lo había visto todo y empezaba a aburrirse de flirtear con la Nereidas en este maravilloso lugar, no volvió a Etiopía a hacer algo útil allí. Pensó que había llegado la hora de demostrar que era tan bueno como su padre conduciendo el carro del sol a lo largo del cielo desde el alba hasta el atardecer.

It is true that Phaëthon began by asking for license to drive the chariot. But when his father regretfully reminded him that he was mortal like his mother and would not be strong enough to control the four horses that pulled the solar chariot, he did not relinquish his purpose. He rubbed himself all over with a sun lotion so potent that it would keep him from getting burned even when so close to the sun and without taking any further precautions leapt into the chariot and took off.

Es cierto que Faetón empezó por pedir licencia para conducir el carro. Pero cuando su padre le recordó que era mortal como su madre y no tendría fuerza suficiente para dominar a los cuatro caballos que tiran del carro solar, no desistió en su empeño. Se embadurnó de un protector solar de tal potencia que podía evitar que se quemase aún estando tan cerca del sol y sin tomar ninguna otra precaución, saltó dentro del carro y despegó.

At first the road was steep and the horses climbed upwards rather slowly although much faster than usual, but when they got to the spot they should have reached at noon, they began to plunge downwards at an extremely dangerous velocity. Phaëthon saw there was no way he could control them, and when in his frustration he hit them with the whip, they attempted to disband and flee all headed in different directions. The constellations of stars that inhabit the sky became alarmed. Some rushed out of the chariot’s way, bumping into each other. Others, feeling they were being attacked, went for the chariot. Phaëthon tried to avoid them flying as low as he could, but by so doing set fire to the trees below. Whole forests were soon ablaze and as the fire spread cities and towns were razed to the ground with all their inhabitants. In the underworld, Hades had to call it an emergency when the souls of thousands of victims began to flood at his gates.

Al principio el camino era cuesta arriba y los caballos subían algo despacio, aunque más rápidamente que de lo habitual. Pero cuando llegaron mucho antes de tiempo al punto que marca el mediodía comenzaron a correr hacia abajo a una velocidad altamente peligrosa. Faetón se dio cuenta de que no podía controlarlos y cuando en su frustración les dio con el látigo intentaron huir desbandados, tirando en direcciones diferentes. Las constelaciones de estrellas que habitan el cielo se alarmaron. Unas huyeron escopetadas del camino del carro, tropezando entre si mientras que otras se sintieron atacadas y respondieron tirándose al carro. Faetón intento esquivarlas volando lo más bajo posible, pero sólo consiguió prender fuego a los árboles debajo. Pronto bosques enteros ardían y el fuego se extendió arrasando pueblos y ciudades enteras con todos sus habitantes. En el inframundo, Hades tuvo que declarar el estado de emergencia cuando las almas de miles de víctimas inundaron sus puertas.

“Get that guy!” everyone shouted at Zeus Jupiter. “It’s either us or him!” And the king of the gods, sorry as he was for his son, threw a lightning bolt at his grandson when the chariot was just above the great river Eridanus, into which Phaëthon’s lifeless body fell wrapped in flames. As for the horses, they did what most do when left to themselves which is head for home without further ado. The mad ride was over.

“¡Fulmina a ese tío!” le gritaba todo el mundo a Zeus Júpiter. “¡O él o nosotros!” Y el rey de los dioses, aunque lo sintió mucho por su hijo, lanzó un rayo a su nieto cuando el carro estaba justo encima del gran río Erídano, al que cayó el cuerpo sin vida de Faetón envuelto en llamas. En cuanto a los caballos, hicieron lo que hace la mayoría de su especie cuando se quedan solos, que es volver a casa tranquilamente. El funesto recorrido había finalizado.



We Romans believe that the river the Greeks called Eridanus is the river Po, which runs through many important Italian cities.

Los romanos creemos que el rio al que los griegos llamaban Erídano es el río Po, que atraviesa muchas ciudades importantes de Italia.

Among the many disasters caused by Phaëthon, the creation of the Libyan Desert stands out. Legend tells that all this territory was very fertile and highly populated before Phaëthon reduced it to sand.

Entre los muchísimos estragos que causó Faetón destaca la creación del desierto de Libia. Según la leyenda, todo ese territorio era muy fértil y estaba muy poblado antes de que Faetón lo redujese a arena.

Throughout history there have been vehicles named after Phaëthon. Let us hope their owners are inclined to drive prudently.

A lo largo de la historia siempre ha habido vehículos que llevan el nombre de Faetón. Esperemos que sus conductores se sientan inclinados a conducir prudentemente.
