II – ALFRED, THE KING WHO WAS GOOD FOR SOMETHING / ALFREDO, EL REY QUE SIRVIÓ PARA ALGO

The first thing we learned about the subject we are dealing with is that there are two kings in English history who are specially linked to constitutionalism.

Lo primero que aprendimos sobre el tema que tratamos es que hay dos reyes que están más vinculados que otros al constitucionalismo.

First was Alfred the Great, a king liked and admired by many English people. He is the only English king still called "the great" today.

El primero de estos reyes es Alfredo el Grande, querido y admirado por muchos ingleses. Es el único rey inglés al que hoy todavía llaman "el grande."

Alfred styled himself king of the Anglo-Saxons, and he is famous for having defended the Saxon kingdoms that then existed in England against the Danish Vikings, who were invading the country and trying to take it for their own.

Alfredo se llamaba a si mismo rey de los anglo-sajones y es famoso por haber defendido los reinos sajones que entonces existían en Inglaterra de los vikingos daneses que invadían el país por aquel entonces e intentaban hacerlo suyo.

A story is told about this king that tells us that he was not a tyrant.

Se cuenta una historia sobre este rey que nos dice que no fue un tirano.

Early in 878, Alfred had been forced to flee from his enemies who were taking all the Saxon kingdoms. He was forced to hide in the home of a swineherd named Denewulf.

A principios del año 878 Alfredo se había visto forzado a huir de sus enemigos que se estaban haciendo con todos los reinos anglo-sajones y tuvo que esconderse en casa de un porquero llamado Denewulf.



Alfred was there incognito, and Denewulf’s wife had no idea who her guest was. She was not very happy about having to feed and look after her husband’s friend. Alfred was understandably depressed, and he did nothing but sit by the fire all day and brood on his ill fortune, so she thought he was nothing more than a lazy parasite with a lot of cheek.

Alfredo estaba ahí de incógnito, y la mujer de Denewulf no tenía ni idea de quién era su invitado. No estaba muy contenta por tener que alimentar y cuidar del amigo de su marido. Alfredo estaba, comprensiblemente, deprimido, y no hacía otra cosa a lo largo del día que sentarse junto al fuego y ponderar sobre su mala suerte, así que ella le tomó por un vago y un parásito con mucha cara.

One day the housewife decided he had to be good for something and since he was sitting by the fire she told him to at least mind some cakes that she was baking over it.

Un día el ama de casa decidió que él tenía que servir para algo y puesto que siempre estaba sentado junto al fuego le ordenó que por lo menos vigilase unas tortas que se estaban cociendo sobre la lumbre.

Alfred said he would keep an eye on them but his mind wandered back to his own troubles and the cakes were burned.

Alfredo dijo que estaría atento a las tortas pero no podía pensar más que en sus problemas y las tortas se quemaron.

The swineherd’s wife lost her patience with the king and told him off.

La mujer del porquero perdió la paciencia con el rey y le puso verde.

But Alfred didn’t take offence. He told the good wife she was right to be angry because he was being useless. He reacted, and from that moment began to take action. By May of that same year he had rallied the Saxons and routed the Danish Vikings.

Pero Alfredo no se ofendió. Le dijo a la buena mujer que tenía razón en enfadarse porque efectivamente se estaba comportando como un inútil. Reaccionó, y desde ese momento empezó a tomar acción. Para el mes de mayo de ese mismo año había conseguido espabilar a los sajones y ahuyentar a los vikingos daneses.

Alfred has to do with constitutionalism because he was a king who thought a monarch had to be useful and serve his people instead of the opposite.

Alfredo tiene que ver con el constitucionalismo porque era un rey que pensaba que un monarca tiene que ser útil y servir a su pueblo y no al revés.

Also, he tried to reform the legal system so that it would be more just than it was. He prepared a domboc, a code of laws in which he compiled many of the rules and regulations that were applied back then in England, removing those he thought wrong and adding some new ones.

También intentó reformar el sistema legal para que fuese más justo de lo que era. Preparó un domboc, un código de leyes en el que compiló muchas de las normas y reglas que se aplicaban entonces en Inglaterra, eliminando las que le parecían injustas y añadiendo otras nuevas.

He made it compulsory for judges to be people who could read and write so that they would hopefully be a little less ignorant than some of them were.

Ordenó que los jueces tuviesen que ser obligatoriamente personas que supiesen leer y escribir, con la esperanza de que así fuesen menos ignorantes de lo que algunos eran.

He implanted trial by jury, which meant that nobody could be punished for his or her behavior unless twelve supposedly impartial men who had sworn to be just agreed that this person was really at fault. This offered more guarantees than simply being condemned by the local leader.

Él impuso el sistema de juicio con jurado, lo que significa que nadie podía ser castigado por su comportamiento sin que doce hombres supuestamente imparciales que habían jurado ser justos estuviesen de acuerdo en que esa persona era realmente culpable. Esto ofrecía más garantías que el ser simplemente condenado por el cacique local.

Nor did Alfred use religion cynically to control his subjects. He seems to have genuinely believed in doing good and helping others, for which many Christians consider him a saint and he can still today be found in the colored glass windows of many English churches.

Alfredo tampoco utilizó la religión cínicamente para controlar a sus súbditos. Parece que realmente creía en hacer el bien y ayudar a otros, por lo que hay muchos cristianos que le consideran un santo y todavía hoy se pueden ver imágenes de Alfredo en las vidrieras de colores de muchas iglesias inglesas.



The writer Charles Dickens, who is also celebrating his 200th birthday this year, said in his “A Child’s History of England,” that Alfred’s spirit inspired some of the best English laws.

El escritor Carlos Dickens, que también está celebrando su doscientos cumpleaños este año, dijo en su “Historia de Inglaterra para niños,” que el espíritu de Alfredo ha inspirado algunas de las mejores leyes inglesas.
