I know I´ve taken longer than usual to show up to tell you a mini myth this month. But the fellow I´m going to tell you about today is a little difficult to find.
Sé que he tardado más de lo habitual en aparecer este mes para contaros un mini mito. Pero el individuo sobre el que os voy a hablar hoy es un poco difícil de encontrar.

You have to stay for a while all by yourself in an open field. And then, if he´s there, he doesn´t quite show up like others would. He hides and observes you and makes disturbing little noises that make you think someone might be there besides you.

Tienes que permanecer sólo un rato en un campo abierto. Y si está por ahí no aparecerá como lo harían otros. Se esconderá y te observará y hará ruiditos inquietantes que te harán pensar que tiene que haber alguien ahí junto a ti.

If you don´t get scared and leave, he might play his flute a little. You won´t know where the music comes from. And if that doesn´t scare you off, he might show himself.

Si no te asustas y huyes, puede que toque su flauta un poco. No sabrás de dónde viene la música. Y si eso no te espanta del lugar, puede que se deje ver.

The sight of him can provoke a panic attack in some people. They run away and suffer from agrophobia the rest of their lives. But if you´re brave and you hold your ground, then he smiles and greets you amicably.

Su aspecto puede provocar un ataque de pánico en algunas personas. Salen corriendo y sufren de agrofobia el resto de sus vidas. Pero si eres valiente y sigues ahí plantado, sonreirá y te saludará amablemente.





Pan is the god of fields and shepherds and their flocks. But he is also the god of those strange fears people suffer from when they find themselves alone and feel exposed and unprotected.

Pan es el dios de los campos, de los pastores y de sus rebaños. Pero también es el dios de esos miedos y temores extraños que sufren las personas que se encuentran solas.

He can be friendly, but he is not always nice. He has been known to do more than frighten people, even out of their wits. But I´m not going to say more about that.

Puede ser simpático cuando quiere, pero no siempre es amable. Se sabe que ha hecho peores cosas que asustar a personas hasta el punto de enloquecer. Pero no vamos a ahondar más en ese tema.

The young lady who is hiding among the reeds in the river is Syrinx. She isn´t hiding from me or from you. She´s hiding from Pan. He fell in love with her but she didn´t like him as much as he would have liked her to.

La jovencita que está escondida en el cañaveral junto al rio es Syringa. No se esconde ni de ti ni de mi. Se esconde de Pan. El se enamoró de ella, pero a ella él no le gustaba tanto como él hubiese querido.

Unfortunately, Pan is one of those troubled and troublesome people who can´t take no for an answer. He kept chasing Syrinx everywhere until she got so fed up with that she decided to hide forever in a river where some of her friends, river nymphs, lived.

Desafortunadamente, Pan es una de esas peronas conflictivas que no saben aceptar un no por respuesta. Persiguió a Syringa por todas partes hasta que la pobre se hartó tanto que decidió esconderse para siempre en un río en el que vivían algunas de sus amigas que eran ninfas de los ríos.

Sometimes you can catch a glimpse of her among the reeds, but she hides so well that most people believe she has turned into the reeds themselves.

A veces puedes atisbar un algo entre las cañas que no es más que Syringa, pero se esconde tan bien que la mayoría de la gente piensa que se ha transformado en el mismo cañaveral.

Can you see the musical instrument that Pan is holding? It is called a syrinx because its pipes are reeds. Pan loves tp play the syrinx because it reminds him of the sweetheart he searches for but can´t find among the reeds. He practices so much out in the fields that he has become quite a good musician.

¿Puedes ver el instrumento musical que Pan está sujetando? Se llama syringa porque está hecho con cañas. A Pan le encanta tocar la syringa porque le recuerda a la chica que ama y que busca sin éxito entre los cañaverales. Practica tanto ahí fuera en el campo que ha llegado a ser un buen músico.

They say Pan´s mother suffered the first panic attack ever when Pan was born and she saw what her baby looked like.

Dicen que la madre de Pan sufrió el primer ataque de pánico habido cuando Pan nació y ella vió el aspecto que tenía su bebé.

People who suffer panic attacks often feel like they are about to die from a heart attack. But the thing about a panic attack is that in most cases when you have one you don´t really have anything important to be scared about. It´s all in your imagination. So the best thing to do is try to remain calm and not lose control. That´s why when Pan tries to scare you out in the fields, he ends up accepting you if he sees he hasn´t succeeded in frightening you.

La gente que sufre ataques de pánico con frecuencia se siente como si se fuese a morir de un infarto. Pero en realidad los ataques de pánico la mayoría de las veces no tienen una causa
justificada. Todo es producto de la imaginación. Así que lo mejor es hacer todo lo posible por permanecer tranquilo y no perder la cabeza. Por eso cuando Pan intenta asustarte en los campos acaba aceptándote si ve que no ha conseguido amedrentarte.
